Point of View Collaborative Writing Project -- 03-16-12

We've been working with our collaborators in New York on research for our writing project. We will take the point of view of the Aztecs and they will take the point of view of Cortes and the Spaniards. This week we will begin writing the actual stories and getting ideas for our illustrations. Stories are due in the Google Docs by Friday. So work hard and be creative!

What Do You Think Will Happen? -- 05-04-11

We are sending up a high altitude balloon 100,000 feet. We are going to attach a green balloon, a blue balloon, an orange balloon and a Cheetos bag on our payloads. The orange one is full of air, the blue one is half full, and the green party balloon is filled about ¼ of the way with air. We are also attaching a Cheetos bag - snack size on the top of the payload. Next, we will send the payload up over 100,000 feet on a high altitude balloon. What do you think will happen to the balloons and chip bag? Leave a comment on this post or one of the student posts telling what you think will happen to each balloon and the chip bag. What effect will going up almost 20 miles high have? We will post photos later to show what happened. LEAVE YOUR ANSWER (HYPOTHESIS) by clicking on the "ADD A COMMENT" tab after the photos below.

Disappointment -- 04-29-11

Hi Guys! We got to go down and watch the astronauts drive by in their special van on their way to the launchpad (I have video of it). Before their van came by a helicopter popped up into the sky and the person from NASA standing next to me said, "Here they come, when the helicopter rises up you know the "Astrovan" is on the way."

I got my cameras going and as the helicopter got closer to us (it was flying straight above the van) you could see soldiers sitting in it with their legs hanging out watching for any trouble. Next security vehicles came swarming in, and they were quickly followed by the astronauts. We all stated cheering and yelling.

Then their van stopped for a few minutes. Next it turned around and went back. The NASA person standing next to me had gotten a text message on her phone just before that and she showed it to me. It said that NASA engineers had discovered a problem with a heater that keeps the rocket fuel from freezing in space. Next we heard that they couldn't fix the problem right away and the space shuttle would NOT launch today.

We were all disappointed. Many people around me let out loud "OH NO's!" and others asked what was going on. You could see all the reporters and TV crews begin to scramble to get the story out.
So in the span of just a minute we all went from being excited and cheering and anticipating, to deep disappointment that this incredible experience was not going to happen today. We have since found out that it will be at least 3 days before it launches. Maybe it will launch on Wednesday when we launch our balloon!

Things can happen that disappoint us. Sometimes that disappointment can make us angry, frustrated and even fearful. But in my experience that disappointment often changes later. Things happen and we get to do what we missed later. Or because we couldn't get that or do that we get to do something else instead. Think about a time that you were disappointed about something you couldn't get or do, but later things worked out or you got over it. Write about a time that you were disappointed. Tell what you were disappointed about and what happened afterwards.

I am disappointed, but I get to come back to school on Monday and work with you to launch a balloon into near space. That makes my disappoint much easier to take. I'll post photos I took of the helicopter and Astrovan and more. And I will probably blog here some more today.

Today's "Read to Learn" Just In Case -- 04-29-11

We have had problems here with the internet, so I'm leaving this assignment now while I can get on. I haven't seen many of yesterday's writing showing up on the blog, so start out by finishing up yesterday's pieces so we can get them posted. More people than usual might be looking at them, so make sure your writing is your best!

Also, I am still uploading photos and video clips to Flickr, so look at those when you get done with your writing. Channel 4 interviewed me this morning over my phone because the internet here was not working well, and I mentioned you were writing things I was sending you. If I can still get on the internet later, I will definitely post new things here. I did get a good picture of the spider they are sending up (they brought it back for us to look at - yeah!!!), and I will put that up on Flickr when I can.

Bye for now!

Your Trip On The Space Shuttle -- 04-28-11

Think about the video clips we've seen about space travel. How it looked, what the astronauts wore- helmets, suits - how nervous they looked. Remember how they shook from the power of the rocket engines. What being weightlessness looked like. Now write a story about what it would be like to launch into space. Describe getting in your suit. How nervous you feel. Getting in the space shuttle. How you feel just before launch, during launch, and when you finally get to space. Be very descriptive, check your work and make it fun for others to read!

Last week I took a trip to New York and while I was there I visited the Denton Dynamos (Mrs. Parisi's) class. I took with me 4 questions written by my students and sealed in individual envelopes for each of her students and they gave me questions to bring back to our classroom.

We also had a lesson and discussion about being safe online and how not to disclose information about yourself that could lead a stranger to you. So now you have to answer each other's questions without revealing anything dangerous about yourself or your family.

Make Their Day! -- 04-21-10

This week we are going to practice making positive, supportive comments and make the day for younger bloggers at the same time! First, go to the first grade blog linked on our class wiki page. Then find a blog post that you make a connection with. You might have to deal with andquot;invented spellingandquot; that you have to decipher. EXAMPLE: It is a post about a cat and you have a cat too.

Next, say something positive about what they wrote or the picture that might accompany the post, like, andquot;I like how you described your cat. I have one too.andquot;

Then ask them a question like: andquot;My cat is white, what color is your cat?andquot;

Edit it and post it to their site.

Have fun and MAKE THEIR DAY!

Leave it fairly simple like that,andnbsp;after-all they are 1st graders.

Hello from Philadelphia! -- 01-29-10

Hi! I made it to Philadelphia Thursday. Today I'm being shown a high school that is kind of like our classroom. All the students have white MacBook computers just like you. The difference is they are older so they have learned to use them to do more of their learning, just like I have explained to you WE want to be able to do. And we are getting there!

Like we talked about the other day, we have already come so far in our writing, posting to our blogs, knowing how to get to certain things through our wiki. Seeing these older students being able to do what WE want to be able to do is very exciting! I'm really looking forward to how our learning will change!andnbsp;

Be good, work hard, I'll see you Monday!

Really good to see some of you posting still. I am back from my trip now so I should be able to keep track more often when you do post. I think you will enjoy it more if more of you are blogging and commenting onandnbsp;each other's posts. So think about things to write about and when you see others from class get them to read and write and comment.

Tell what you did for the 4th of July, OR tell about a movie you've seen or would like to see, OR write about something going on in the news (like Iran or Michael Jackson or anything else). Even write about a post you think others should write about and then comment on each other's.andnbsp;

Then on Friday we will each revisit those posts to select our post of the week.
I'm In China! -- 09-15-08

Hi class! I'm writing this Tuesday morning at about 8:30am but it is 5:30pm Monday night for you. I wanted to write earlier but my internet connection wouldn't work, so I had to wait until now. I flew 3 different jets - Reno to San Francisco, San Francisco to Korea, and Korea to Shanghai, China to get here. Altogether over 15 hours of flying!andnbsp;

When I woke up this morning and looked outside I noticed that there is a park and people were walking and excersizing and playing badminton there. If I get a chance I will put a photo or 2 on our Flickr page so you can see it. Here is your writing assignment for today.

Being in a place you are not familiar with can be kind of scary. You don't know people and customs and who you can talk to. Many of you have been a new student in school or have moved to a new place. Maybe, like Mr. Crosby you have gone on a trip to somewhere you don't know. Write about a time you were in an unfamiliar place or a new place, what was it like? What was scary? What was different? What happened?andnbsp;

I've got to go. They need me to go some where. I'll try to write again soon!!!

Blog All Summer! -- 06-04-08

Most teachers beg their students to read during their time off from coming to school each day. Why? Because like anything else we get better with practice and rusty without practice. So yes! READ! READ! READ!
This year we have come so far, and improved SO MUCH in our writing. Most of us now have access to a computer at home, and the rest probably know someone that does or somewhere (the same public library where you can get lots of books) that does. So also BLOG! Blog about what you do, learn and feel. Blog the good and the bad ... but BLOG!
I will put up ideas here from time to time as the summer goes along that you can write about too.
Remember too, that this is a great opportunity to communicate with your friends here in our school community, but also with those students all over the world in your blogging community. Keep those connections going. What are they doing? What books are they reading?
Also have a great summer! ... a great enough summer you WANT to write about it!

Pass-It On prompt 1 -- 03-19-08

Today's writing is a "Pass-It On" prompt to help us prepare for our "Mysteries of Harris Burdick" Collaborative Writing Project.

1) Begin writing on the topic. 2) When time is up (about 5 minutes or so) “Pass-It On” to the next writer. 3) Add your writing to what someone else started. 4) We will keep passing around until you get your story back. Then you bring the story to an end, edit it - and post it. FUN!!! Here is the prompt:

We had just sat down on the school bus that was taking us on our field trip when the bus driver stood up, turned around and in a loud voice said, “ We are not going on the trip you thought we were. Your class has won a trip to a very special place.”
The next thing we knew some kind of gas started to spray from the ceiling and we all fell asleep in our seats. When we woke up hours later we found out we had been taken to

Lunar Eclipse Blog Post -- 02-20-08

There will be a lunar eclipse of the Moon Wednesday night. It begins just before 6:00pm and is at its total between 7:00pm and 8:00pm. Your assignment is to SAFELY go outside and observe the eclipse and tell about your observations. Don’t go outside in the dark without someone being with you. You should go out 2 or 3 times to see the eclipse at different times. Describe colors of the Moon, what else you see, how warm or cold it is outside, who goes out with you. Then tell the story of your experience and what you saw and did.

If the weather is not good for viewing the eclipse then tell about trying to view the eclipse. Explain what happened each time you went out, what you did see, do, try to do. How did you feel. What was the weather like?
