Seventh Grade -- 05-19-12

Seventh grade was a very different experience. It taught you responsibility and how to deal with different situations. At first you had to adjust to your locker partner. With all the different teachers you had to adjust to their personalities and know how to behave around them. I believe the most successful part of seventh grade was the actual grades. If you put effort forward and actually tried on your work it was easy to get a good grade. For me this year was more stressful. It was a lot different than sixth grade with the amount of work. Academically I learned that with projects they might not go as planned and you have to learn how to cope to your research. For example, for world history, I got very different results than I planned on for my subject. Personally, I learned how to be more open at school. I know it might have not seemed that way, but I've come a long way. One thing that I would change would be the length of exploritories. Allowing the exploritories last more than quarter would be fantastic. There wasn't really anything I learned the hard way this year. In all, seventh grade was a memory I won't forget.

In eighth grade I would really like to be a peer helper. I think the experience would be sort of life changing. It's not like I won't survive if I don't peer help, but it would have a big impact on my life. Just being given the opportunity to make the difference is really eye opening. The consideration and interview for peer helping was very surreal to me. I would be honored and proud to be a peer helper, let's just hope that I get the job.

To the future seventh graders at Mountain Ridge Middle School, all I have to say is turn in your work! When a teacher gets work in time and with effort put behind it, they couldn't ask for more. Seventh grade will be easy if you turn in your work, and if you don't it will be torture! I've seen some of my friends not give a second thought to seventh grade and blew it; they were being nagged by teachers constantly and always had to stay after school because of their work or lack there of. Also, try to get along with your teachers. Even if you don't like them still be kind, considerate, and respectful. Remember they still are your no matter what and they still have authority. If you follow these simple rules seventh grade will be a breeze.

International Towne -- 05-13-12

International Towne was okay. The presentation was really good and it seemed very professional and real. For me it was stressful! At one point I was all alone in my country! I don’t know how it happened but I felt very stressed especially then. I learned that you don’t have a lot of free time when you work; it is actually really fun being an artisan and get people to buy stuff. During International Towne I had to step outside of my comfort zone a little bit. If I could change one thing it would be the price and the supplies in Ghana for mask making were all dried out and empty, not very useable. The best part of International Towne was selling products to the customers. In all, I’m glad I experienced International Towne.

World History FAir -- 05-08-12

My guiding question is “How did the religion of cats influence Egyptians?” This affects our lives today because it shows an example of how religion is a huge part in living and how seriously people take their religion. The most interesting part to me is the death part of this religion. Although it is creepy, it is intriguing. I found out that there is a death penalty when harm is done to a cat. There were also temples created for cats for their afterlife.

My favorite display that I saw was on stain glass windows. I learned that the creation of the stain glass window helped and really impacted the growth of churches. I found out that stain glass windows take a very long time to be created and took a lot of attention. Jolly Ranchers are a lot like the stain glass. She made a stain glass window and apparently it took a lot of work but she enjoyed it. Her project really kept me in awe.

I think the format of the book is really cool so far. It’s fun seeing all the different perspectives. The big idea is a little cheesy but very impressing. Just hearing about a community coming together keeps me in awe. My favorite character so far is Kim, how she decided to keep her father in memory. The sentimental part of her lima beans is very touching.

I think having the activities helped me remember the book. The activities were very creative and all related to Seedfolks in unique ways. My favorite activity was making seed bombs in 3d art. Seed bombs are these little piles of dried dirt mixture. I know that sounds really icky and disgusting but it’s not as bad as it sounds. Each table had a contest on who could make better figures out of the mixture. Making the bombs were lots of fun, since I did them with friends. It was a blast!

The Religion of Egyptian Cats -- 04-22-12

My topic has created change deeply. Egyptians were affected by cats and their religion of the cats. Some people dedicated their lives to the cats. One weird thing I found out was when a cat in a house dies the whole family shaves their eyebrows to show their mourning. My final project is going fine. I have my museum display done. My tri-fold is spray painted and all I have to do now is paste on the stuff. I am semi-ready, a little nervous too. The research has helped me answer my question by examples of the religion of cats in everyday life in Egypt.

3D Art -- 04-13-12

Even though I am not an artist, I absolutely love 3D art. Not only is there a nice, relaxed teacher, but I also like the atmosphere. Lately, I have been making a frog out of clay. To be honest, it is like a giant glob of clay, but I am still very proud of it. I finished the project today! The one time I was on the wheel I found out that I have lots of fun using it. Although I had to restart my project three times, it still is my favorite part of 3D art. Our next project is with wire and foil. I am thinking of making my dog, a dioxin, for this project. Since the dog is so long I’m scared that the middle the dioxin will cave in. #D art is a time to relax for me. In all, 3D art is my new favorite exploratory.

The Ernest Green Story -- 03-20-12

The movie about The Little Rock Nine really frustrated me. Just seeing the way people treated them angered me. It also was cool how they showed how brave they were, and what they went through. People were terribly cruel and it just keeps me in awe that people would try their hardest not to get black people in their school. People’s hatred scared me and I was terrified for The Little Rock Nine. I hope I would have been one of The Little Rock Nine but I can’t really know until I was put in that situation. If I were put in that situation and saw what was going on to me and the ones I loved, I have a feeling I would fight back. What really got me was how the teacher told Ernest that he had no reason for being absent. Of coarse he had a reason! People were trying to kill him! The teacher was just being unfair and annoying. Also, it frustrated me that the teachers would lie, like in the gym situation. A thing that has changed is racism. People now frown upon it and it is not expectable in our society. Another discrimination going on in the world today that I have noticed is that when there are disabled people, we think that they aren’t capable of a lot, that they are not equipped intelligently. In some cases this is true but sometimes, we don’t even give them a chance. The Ernest Green Story has really impacted my life.

From the Classroom to the Blog -- 02-26-12

From the classroom to the blog, I am here to give you the scoop on the microbiology session in science. In science, we have learned a lot but the thing that intrigued me the most was the information about cancer. We hear about cancer in every-day lives and it is nice to know the science behind cancer. The most interesting part about this session was using the microscope. Seeing all the organisms up-close and personal. When you use a microscope the hardest part was drawing the organism. The microbiology session was also very enjoyable because of all the labs we got to do. Overall this was a great session in science.

I love the diaries in history through the perspective a person my age. In some cases events in her diary are ironic. Also, it is really cool how I can compare personalities other girls my age at another time and a very serious event. We have written about many different subjects like food, animals, and clothes. Each time we write a poem it is a different style.
Poets' Tools -- 01-30-12

Poets use a lot of tools to play with our emotions. Settings and characters can also be a tool. Their main tool is words. They use words that show emotions and feelings. Also, they can use the feel of the words. For example, when if someone would like a sad mood they could use deep vowels like o's a lot. Another example is if the writer wants a happy vibe they can have lots of words ending in y's or i's the happy sounding vowels. An example of the poetry tools are The I Have a Dream Speech. Another example would be poems by Emerson. In all, poets have a lot of power with your emotions because of the tools they use.

Kahlil Gibran -- 01-20-12

The quote I chose was “You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give." Kahlil Gibran I think this quote means that objects are meaningless and your true value is worth millions. If you give someone an expensive present with no thought behind it and it is like you gave them nothing but if you buy a gift and put all your thought into it, it means the world to them. I can apply this to my life by knowing that if I put my thought in something it will truly be appreciated. If you put your thought into something like righting them a note to tell them how much they mean to you it will change there day. This could impact the world because if everyone follows this quote everything wouldn’t be about money. In all, I am glad I chose this quote and I took the time to intrepid it.

2012 Goals -- 01-13-12

My goals for this year will be pretty hard to accomplish. First, I want to learn more chords on guitar and at the end of the year be able to play a song. Now, my academic goals will be about Humanities, Math, and Spanish. In Humanities I want to be able to remember and relate to the history, and with the pop quizzes I want to get a 5 out of 5. Also, for Math, I want to get 100 points higher, which is harder for me because of the level of math I am in. Finally, in Spanish I want to be able to hold a conversation in Spanish on a basic level. I want to also be able to remember vocabulary and grammar rules. Although there are a lot of goals I think I will be able to achieve them.

Wiki's -- 12-16-11

My wiki did not go so well. First, I only had two people from Louisiana in my group and no one else because of a misunderstanding. Also, one person in my group did not do very much. They did not do their part of the video. The other person in my group had trouble getting to a computer. Communicating was harder because it was by writing so your partner might take it the wrong way. This project was different and stressful for me. Something that I would do different is check in everyday with my group mates and ask what they did and what they needed to do. Next year, I would have little due dates during the project, what would have to be done each day and have the teacher check in on the group at the end of the day. I know this would not be realistic because there are so many students. This has been a very interesting experience.

Greek! -- 12-09-11

Greeks have influenced our world in many ways. One big impact that they had was making the polis. This let different city-states have different religion, rulers, and beliefs. They stood up for themselves and risked their lives for their towns and fought for what was right. The Greeks have many ways that they have influenced our culture today.
Stimulating the Greek culture in social studies is fun. In class we have been separated into different city-states. Each city-state competes for points. This includes art, Olympics, and many more. One task that we had to do is put the Greek alphabet to a familiar tune. Now, we have to memorize and recite it next class. At the end of each class period we roll the dice to see the gods’ fate for us. All together this is a great way to learn about the Greeks.

Christmas Traditions -- 12-02-11

Every year at Christmas my family has traditions. We do the usual of getting and giving presents to our family and friends. Operation Christmas child is a tradition we do, every time that Christmas rolls around we go out and buy presents for children in other countries who can not afford them and then we send them off in shoe boxes. One of my favorites is watching all the classic Christmas movies. During the time of preparing for this special holiday, we get to draw names for stockings and everyone gets a different person each year, it’s sort of like Secret Santa. Then, we shop for their stocking. On the night of Christmas we have little snacks for dinner that each of us make. Christmas Eve we open one present, and each year they just happen to be new pajamas. On Christmas morning we have fresh, hot, homemade cinnamon rolls that melt in your mouth. Next, we open presents. Finally, for dinner, our close family friends come to our house and we eat spiral ham. In all, this is one of my favorite holidays, and it’s the traditions that make it so special.

My Favorite Mystery and Begining of My Mystery -- 11-10-11

The best mystery story that I have read was “The Pit and the Pendulum.” What Edgar Allan Poe did best was keeping it a mystery. There were many unpredictable changes in this story. Another thing that he did well was the suspense of the mystery. He gets an encore for that. This was the best story for the mystery.
Here is the starter for my mystery: I sent Catie ahead because I forgot my stuff at work. Being only 12 we stick together so she was going to wait for me at the river. While I’m walking out the door I run down to the river. She wasn’t there so I kept going thinking that Catie forgot and already headed home. On my way home I kept thinking this is weird of her because she is scared easily. Once I got home she was nowhere to be found. Searching high and low she was nowhere to be seen! After that I went straight to the police. Catie was reported missing. Two days later she still wasn’t found and was considered MIA and kidnapped. Here in Africa this is very common. The police weren’t going to help since they already had 12 other cases that were exactly the same. This means that I have to step up and search for her and I know this is the 13 case, hopefully it will be unlucky for the kidnapper who had the nerve to take away my friend.

The Toy Market -- 10-20-11

To be honest I am in awe of how toys have changed. Toys have gone from just a simple doll or toy car to an electronic in the years. It just shows how Children’s attitudes have changed. Now they are more needy and spoiled. Along with this it is easy to see that small businesses can come up from behind and go to the lead. Also you can tell that the big toy company’s are going down in number while the small toy company’s are taking over. Some examples are that there is a new toy that is a miniature blimp that actually you can remote control. Almost all of the toys have technology in them. The article states that if the market keeps going as it is underdogs will soon take over and the big companies won’t have a lot of profit. This is a great article telling about the market. Here is the URL for my article:http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2011/smallbusiness/1110/gallery.christmas_hot_toys/?iid=SF_SB_Lead

My favorite book that I have read lately is Parvana’s Journey by Deborah Ellis. Parvana’s Journey is book two of The Breadwinner Series. This is my favorite book because of the story line. It is about a young girl named Parvana facing the realistic tragedies and struggles of what a woman in Afghanistan would face. With her father dead and her family moving away for her sisters wedding, she heads towards the town that is being attacked. Along the way she meets kids her age going through the struggles she suffers and they become each others family. During the journey she dresses as a boy because females can’t be without a male escort, and if you don’t have a male escort the Taliban will do a list of things to you. This realistic fiction story is an eye opening experience that changes your point of view when you read it.

On Wednesday, September21st, 2011 team 743 went on a field trip to Fox Run Park. Team building at Fox Run Park was fun. My favorite part was playing hide and go seek with Mr. Howard. I loved how it showed predators and prey. It really let me get the concept of the food chain and the process of hunting in nature. Also the pictures were really cool. Seeing the camouflage really had me thinking. Even in some of the pictures I couldn’t see object in hiding. From the team building portion I liked the marble and tube thing. I’ve been able to learn about working with the different personality. Figuring out the dominate personalities weren’t hard and were hard to work with. Concluding, the field trip was fun and you got to learn a lot about your leadership and others.

Banned Books Week -- 09-29-11

The Banned Book Week has really opened my eyes on history of books and people’s opinion. I’m surprised that so many people have tried to ban books, since the law keeps us from banning books. Also I understand why some people would like to ban books, for the content of the book. Personally, I do agree that some books and backgrounds should be banned. It’s very different how some people have a very different opinion than yours but can have the same interests as you. Still, I’m amazed that your favorite book, someone has probably tried to ban it. I also understand why some people want to ban books to protect their children. All in all, I think that certain books wouldn’t hurt our country.
