Itandrsquo;s over and the jury has declared the accused not guilty by virtue of reasonable doubt; they were eventually convinced by juror 8 that there were too many possibilities within each of the pieces of evidence and the witness testimony rather than there being only one way to take them. In other words, to send a man to death, they were convinced by 8 that they had to have absolute proof of his guilt and not situations and statements where there was a possibility that things could have been done in other ways. So, reasonable doubt frees him, but that does not necessarily mean heandrsquo;s innocent of the crime. What do you think?

If you believe heandrsquo;s guilty, what are three pieces of evidence that convince you that he easily could have committed the crime and why, even though they were discounted by the jury because they did not seem definite enough to convict. Do you believe that they clearly show that this defendant murdered his father and why do you believe each of the three is clearly what had to happen that night?

If you believe heandrsquo;s innocentandmdash;that he absolutely could not have committed this crimeandmdash;what are the three strongest pieces of evidence that to your mind clearly prove that he did not murder his father and why do you think they are so clear with regard to his innocence?

And finally, if you had been on this jury, would you have gone along with all of them? Would you have been convinced? Or would you have held out even longer than 3 did, maintaining that the defendent could and should not be set free because there was just too much evidence against him?

Try this one for me. Read it over a couple of times and then explain it below by putting it into modern English.

BANQUO

Thou hast it now: king, Cawdor, Glamis, all,

As the weird women promised, and, I fear,

Thou playandrsquo;dst most foully forandrsquo;t: yet it was said

It should not stand in thy posterity,

But that myself should be the root and father

Of many kings. If there come truth from themandmdash;

As upon thee, Macbeth, their speeches shineandmdash;

Why, by the verities on thee made good,

May they not be my oracles as well,

And set me up in hope? But hush! no more.

These are the opening lines of Act III. Try it without looking in your book first and then if you think you need to, go to the spot and see if there are any helpful footnotes.

Part One: This is probably the most famous Christmas story in the world but not everyone really knows much about it. Itandrsquo;s central theme is the responsibility we all have to help those around us, especially those who are less fortunate than we are. Dickens, who wrote it, was really lecturing to the wealthy during his time because he felt that they were getting richer and not helping anyone at all with their money. He saw a lot of poor around himandmdash;especially childrenandmdash;being mistreated and ignored and he hoped the story would change some of that. He shows us that Christmas is about receiving but it is also more importantly about giving. So, tell me, what is the best Christmas gift you ever received? What made it so special to you? AND what is the best Christmas gift you ever GAVE to anyone? Why did you feel it would be so special or important to them?

Me? Well, as a kid, I always wanted every toy I saw on TV. Nowadays, my grandaughter always says to me every time she sees a toy commercial: andquot;Oh, Poppy, you can buy me that!andquot; and I think I know whom she got that from. My favorite gift at Christmas that always comes back to mind every year was the Remco Radar Rocket Cannonandmdash;a very cool toy that had radar screens and rocket launchers and a microphone system that I played with forever (and drove my parents crazy with all the noise and the rockets bouncing off lampshades). But, I think the best gift I ever gave was to someone I donandrsquo;t even know yet and it was a sponsorship of a Guatemalan child that I signed up to help through one of the Orphan Child agencies. I still contribute money every month and get letters and pictures from her from time to time.

Now that youandrsquo;ve met some of the passengers and crew who were on the boat that night, who do you think was the most unfortunate or lost the most that night and who was the luckiest. Give reasons for your choices. For instance, if I took the Marvins, the couple that Jack and Rose were loosely based on, I would say that Dan was the most unfortunate because he lost his life when it was just beginning but at least he was able to make sure his wife was savedandmdash;and the baby that he did not even know about. And Mary, his wife, was very lucky to survive, but even luckier by the fact that her baby survived as well even though she didnandrsquo;t even know about him yet.
