Biography Bash and Projects -- 06-08-13

The 3H Crew learned all about biographies. First they read a biography, took notes, and then used the information learned to create a project about the subject of their biography. Students could choose to create a PowerPoint Presentation, Glog, or accordion book. The final activity was a Biography Bash where the students "became" the person they learned about and gave a speech to classmates, parents, and other special guests. Architecture Walking Trip -- 06-04-13

The 3H Crew is very interested in learning all about the history of our community. Today we learned about how architecture has changed in the 300 years Haddonfield has been around. After learning about different styles of architecture, we hit the streets and became architecture detectives. We checked out 7 houses and after answering a series of questions, determined what style of architecture each house was. Here we are in front of a great example of a Queen Anne style Victorian house.

Recycled Instrument Glogs -- 04-11-13

We ended our Sound Unit by making Recycled Instruments. Each student was taped while he/she presented their instrument to the class. The students also wrote a paragraph about the instrument and took a photo of it using an iPad. The students created a Glog (an interactive poster) incorporating all of the components. On Monday we skyped with Mr. Ferguson's 4th grade and learned all about a rural community in New Hampshire. Today we skyped with Mrs. Daemmrich's 4th grade class and learned all about a suburb in Wisconsin. The 3H Crew will be using the information to compare these communities to our own community.

To learn about the community, each one of the 3H Crew became an expert about one of our "community" vocabulary words. They researched the meaning, created a gesture and a vocabulary card to help classmates remember the word, tried to make connections of how the word fit into "community" and then taught the class their special word. After all the words were taught, the 3H Crew worked together to group like words, and ultimately created a huge community graphic organizer(see below). The 3H Crew participated in the Global Monster Project again this year. This year 44 classes from around the world were involved. Each class wrote a description of one monster part. Once everyone sent in their description, each class had to build a monster following the descriptions. This project's objectives were: Collaboration, Interpretation, Problem Solving,
Decision Making, Hands-on Construction, Communication,
Map/Geography Skills, Global Awareness, and Engaging Fun!

The 3H Crew is back to school today after experiencing first hand a little storm called Hurricane Sandy. andnbsp;We are very lucky that everyone is safe and things are beginning to get back to normal. andnbsp;Halloween was poseponed in our town and will be celebrated on Friday. andnbsp;All of the 3H Crew had hurricane stories to tell, so we shared the sights, sounds, and feelings about the storm. Hurricane Sandy Experiences

We have experienced Hurricane Sandy. It is when we get a lot of impact of rain and strong wind. Trees fall down and basements flood.andnbsp; Electricity goes out.

During Hurricane Sandy, we were stuck inside.andnbsp; On the news, we saw the boardwalk at the shore crumble to pieces. We also saw a power line explode. Shayne and Cece saw that Ocean City, NJ was completely covered in water. The storm was 90 miles long.andnbsp; Then the storm died out and we were safe.

The main lesson of Hurricane Sandy is be prepared. I saw several trees go down taking the power lines with them.andnbsp; Soon the wind was blowing, no howling like a wolf in the middle of nowhere. We were happy because we did not lose power and we could watch tv. Landmark Games 2012 -- 03-02-12

The 3H Crew is working on another global project. andnbsp;This time we have paired up with Mrs. Bushey's 5th graders and are participating in the Landmark Games, which has been dubbed andquot;the most difficult intellectual game on the Internetandquot;. Forty-two teams from around the world are participating. Each team had to pick a landmark and write 9 clues about it. andnbsp;Each week 3 new clues are sent about the 42 landmarks. Tatem's 5th graders and 3rd graders are working together using their critical thinking skills, map skills, and research skills in order to figure out where in the world the landmarks are. Each week the students are allowed to email one yes or no question in order to help them with their quest to find the landmark.

Our andquot;Tatem Tigerandquot; team is looking forward to seeing the last set of clues next week and is hopeful that they will be able to locate all of the landmarks. andnbsp;Wish us luck!

The 3H Crew is very excited to be a part of Trekking the Planet project!

Here is a message from Darren and Sandy Van Soye about their journey:

Our Journey is a 424-day, around-the-world trip to raise geography education awareness.

We plan to visit six continents and approximately 50 countries.

During the expedition, we will be taking approximately 12 hikes or andquot;treksandquot; to some of the most remote and unspoiled places in the world.

Travel will be by ground (boat, train, bus), where possible, to experience the world more closely and minimize our carbon footprint.

Our Mission is to bring geography to life and instill a greater curiosity about the world - its people, culture and our fragile planet - in as many young people as possible.

By following this journey, kids can increase their understanding of geography and develop an appreciation for the cultural and natural significance of places in the world.

Our Goal is to engage students by providing geography education modules: sixty (60) four-page weekly overviews (that correspond to where we will be) that use the framework of the Geography Standards of 1994 developed by the US National Council for Geographic Education.

We plan to send out weekly supplemental emails with our impressions during our journey, as well as images and video from the road.
