Fifth Grade
Fifth grade is a very interesting year. You will be amazed by how much you learn in just nine months! But there are still expectations in your behavior. You will also face many challenges. In this essay you will also be given survival tips by me. I will also tell you about fifth grade social life, and lastly I will tell you about my favorite moments from fifth grade.
Like I said before, you will have many expectations for fifth grade. So, as expectation #1: Don’t be self – centered. You’ll get through the day much more easily. Rather than making yourself become everyone’s enemy. Help others and fifth grade will be a lot easier to survive.
Another expectation for fifth grade is: Pay attention, especially to directions. If you don’t, you will end up with a pile of lates. You also could be easily embarrassed in front of the class. So, save yourself the stress (and the embarrassment) and pay attention.
My last class expectation for you is: Be kind and respectful. No one wants to hang out with someone who’s mean to everyone else. If you act kind and respectful, you have a chance to be on the teacher’s good side. Plus, you’ll have more friends and fewer adversaries.
If you remember these classroom expectations, you are guaranteed a better time in fifth grade.

In fifth grade, you will face a lot of challenges. Here are some of the challenges I faced in fifth grade.
One of my challenges in fifth grade was short due dates. If any fourth graders are reading this, remember the planet project you guys had last year? Do you remember how long you had to do it? You had about one month to do that, and in fifth grade, the longest time we have to do a project is about two weeks. Most of the time in fifth grade, we have barely over a week, maybe four days, or one week. It’s a major challenge, so don’t slack. We’ve had SO many projects this year that I stopped counting.
Another challenge I faced this year was the homework. I remember being up till ten o’clock at night trying to get it all done in the beginning of the year. (That’s mainly because I have two instruments to practice. Don’t worry.) If you use your time wisely, you can usually get most of it done at school. It slows in about the middle of the year, (mostly because I got to be in an independent math group) and speeds up at the end. Anyways, if you use your time wisely you can get things done faster.
One more challenge I am going to share with you is pleasing the teacher. If you’re on their good side, and you are respectful and follow directions, you will get along with them quite easily. Pleasing them homework – wise, though, is another matter. Taking time on your work and paying attention to detail will please them, so don’t do otherwise. Things will be much easier on you if you do.
So, I wish you luck with your fifth grade challenges, and if you face some of the challenges I did, try to remember my tips on how to survive them.
Surviving fifth grade is tricky, so here are some tips to help you through it.
My first tip is: Do NOT slack. Whatever you do, don’t slack. When something is assigned to you, if given time to work on it, start right away. If you put things off, that means a late. If you get a certain amount of lates, no quarterly reward. If you get over five lates in fourth quarter, you won’t be able to play against the teachers in the kickball game. My best advice is: Set a goal for yourself. You’ll feel proud that you didn’t slack if you reach that goal.
Some more advice for you: Don’t hang out with the troublemakers. They’ll only drag you down with them. And, if they’re mean and no one hangs out with them, chances are they’ll try to be nice to get more friends. Just remember, they’re at a lower level than you are, so don’t be mean to them and stoop to the same level. In conclusion, just stay away.
Survival tip #3: It’s always nice to be careful what to say. If you aren’t, that means trouble for your fifth grade life. My class’s main goal is respect, so, show some respect and watch the “just kidding” jokes and insults. It’s also a very good thing to be respectful. That means a better social life and fewer tribulations. Lack of respect can also mean no kickball game, or no track meet or special events like that.
I hope all of you future fifth graders enjoyed my tips!

Fifth grade social life is very complicated, but still fun. So here are some of my stories about it.
Socializing with your fellow fifth graders is very hard to do sometimes. One issue in my class this year was respect. Some kids think they can be flat out rude to each other for no apparent reason. So my advice to you is not to be like that to your friends, classmates or anyone. No one likes it, and there is no reason to disrespect each other like that.
Another issue for my class was the sarcasm. Sometimes, if it is a light joke, people will let it slide, but other times it can be WAY overboard. Try to remember that sarcasm isn’t always funny. There are plenty of other ways to have fun with your friends than to be sarcastic.
The last issue I am going to talk about is recess. Recess is a fun time for you to relax and get your energy out. Just don’t get carried away. We had a lot of weird and COMPLETELY uncalled for issues on the playground. From people being downright snobs to each other to being given the wrong orders, things got a little out of hand. Respect is still required wherever you are.
I wish all soon – to – be fifth graders a good social experience in fifth grade!

Fifth grade is a very fun year. Here are some of my favorite moments from fifth grade:

One of my absolute favorite things we did this year was present our culture displays. The assignment was about ourselves and our heritages. It was fun to find out where everyone’s ancestors came from. Also, to tell everyone where you come from or what you like was really fun to do. I hope that next year’s fifth graders will enjoy the experience as much as I did.
Fort Snelling was my favorite field trip this year. Plus, it was very amusing to watch several people try to get trucks to honk their horns on the bus ride there. I also like visiting places that have history and that are also very old. It was a lot of fun to see what it was like there. The employees acted like they were from the time of the Fort’s use, which was in the 1800s (I don’t know for sure). I hope everyone else enjoyed that field trip as much as I did.
The greatest prank ever pulled by the fifth grade this year was during math class. About ten students in our class work out in the hall independently, and we formed a friendly rivalry with Mr.Kuehn. So, as a joke, Mr. McCartney, - after Mr.Kuehn had left his room (without his keys) – locked Mr. Kuehn’s classroom door. When his class came back, they were locked out. Eventually, we had to let them back in, though. That was the best prank (and only prank) we pulled all year!

In this essay I have told you about your classroom expectations for fifth grade. I have taken you through your classroom expectations for fifth grade. I have told you about some of the challenges. I gave you some survival tips and told you about fifth grade social life. I shared my favorite moments from fifth grade. But not everything about fifth grade is mentioned in this essay. So, I wish all future fifth graders a fun and exciting year. Good luck!
Sincerely,
J M
Swimming inside me,
Is the Obsession.
The Obsession is that fluttery feeling,
Hanging in my stomach.

This certain Obsession makes,
The hammering of my heart.
It makes the screaming adrenaline,
In my veins.

The Obsession is constant,
Non – stop moving of my feet.
The thundering of the speakers.
This music to my ears,

Poem - The Uncontrolled -- 03-16-10

I sat in a meadow to talk to a tree.
The tree was talking to me,
About what it had seen the night before.
The tree let go of a leaf,
And told me everything about what he'd seen.
"I saw the Uncontrolled.
They were wild, and they pranced about,
They were treating the meadow,
So unfair, that I finally shouted 'ENOUGH'.
Then Uncontrolled did not,
Did not pay, ANY attention to me what - so - ever,
And the meadow was so trashed that I was,
I was afraid I could no longer live there.
Suddenly I heard the Uncontrolled,
Scream in terror at something,
SOMEONE standing at the top of the hill."
The tree paused, staring at the meadow,
That he loved so much.
"It was Hope. Hope scared them away,
And she cleaned the meadow.
That's what we all need.
A little Hope."
2. Values
3. Strong Work Epic.
Why:
1. You need persistence to keep going, because you are always going to run into obstacles.
2. Successful people have values that they believe strongly in and they work hard for what they believe in.
3. Any successful person has to be willing to work hard in order to be successful.

My Top Three Characteristics of Successful People

1. Hard Working
2. They Don't Complain
3. They're Able to Make Compromises
Why:
1. What successful people AREN'T hard workers? You can't go too far if you don't work hard.
2. If a successful person complained, it won't help them any. People who make it far in the world cannot complain, or they won’t make it anywhere further.
3. Successful people make success by compromising. If you can't make a compromise in anything, then nothing will work out for you.

Here's a couple of links to people's thoughts on the characteristics of successful people:

I love the first one the most! This person really understands the concept of success.

Final Copy- The Cannibal Dream -- 03-02-10

Not that long ago I had a cannibal dream.
I was at an unknown school, with some kids who didn’t exist,
We were playing against some odd kids, who were licking their chops,
Staring at us, soon glaring at us.
We started chucking balls over the net at them,
You’d never guess what the creeps on the other team did!
They drew forks and knives!
They said we were cannibals, freakish and tough.
And they glared again and said we looked
So we ran out of the school and ran and ran and ran.
We ran through parts of an unknown town,
Soon making it to a gas station.
The cannibals had now caught up to us,
Getting a hold on us and taking us captive.
They forced into a truck they’d hijacked and started to speed.
ZOOM! They went down the street, and
I swore they were going to take out their forks and knives and eat us alive!
And just when I was sure they were going to drive us to our death,
We crashed into a pile of rocks.
The cannibals did not survive the crash.
And after taking a moment of silence for our kidnappers,
The dream faded away, and made it all the way…
To my blog page.

Movie- The Lightning Thief -- 02-12-10

Okay, so I just saw the movie Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, and I'm a HUGE fan of the Percy Jackson book series, but this movie was a complete rip off. It was nowhere close to being like the book, and it was still good, just not REALLY good. I was pretty disappointed, and on the way home, my family and I started naming the things that were cut out of the movie. They left out EVERYTHING, and it was, like I said, NOWHERE CLOSE to being as good as the book.
I was VERY disappointed, and they could've made the movie REALLY good!

Snow Day Poem -- 02-10-10

                On My Snow Day

On my snow day I went outside,
To the cold, dark backyard.
I was nearly blind,
The full moon my only light.

I trudged around the snow,
My jeans now wet and cold.
Suddenly, I sunk, and I find snow,
All the way up to my thighs.

I tried to get out,to make a step forward,
And I did, but sunk again.
I made my way to the pond,
And never sunk again.

At the frozen pond I stood,
Memories flashing in my eyes,
I slid around on the pond for a while.
Then, I ran up the hill.

For the rest of the night I stood,
Reminiscing old memories.
Soon, the sun rose,
And I walked home to my warm home.

Kindness Retreat -- 02-03-10

Yesterday, our grade went to the small gym all day and had a kindness retreat. My favorite part was definately when we danced the Cupid Shuffle.
The teachers were also dancing and Mr.McCartney break danced to, and another teacher cartwheeled. WEIRD! But it was awesome at the same time. Our class has been trying to get Mr.McCartney to break dance again ever since.
The Youth Frontiers, the organization that did this, talked about treating one another with kindness. Which is something our school needs to do more often. We were put into small groups and had fun contests, discussed things that our students needed to work on not doing, and many other things. It was lots of fun!

No Regrets -- 02-03-10

                No Regrets
By JM

Victoria

There were several reasons why. Why? Why do I have bad impulse control? Why did I have to be such a good liar?
Of course, it was too hard to deal with my lack of impulse control and honesty at the moment. My head was too full of questions right now to answer them, and the rest of me was filled with pain.

As I sat in a hotel room in Vancouver, Canada, thinking about how I regretted my decisions the past few months, looking back at my incredibly impatient mind.
What started my regret was the Winter Olympics. I had been told I had talent for the past fourteen years I’d been in figure skating. I loved it, and I loved hearing I was good. I know, selfish, right?
Anyways, what happened was, my aunt and I live in Seattle, Washington, and we traveled to Canada a lot, and now I was headed to Vancouver, Canada, for callbacks for the 2010 Winter Olympics. I had first tried out on YouTube, and here I was, I had come this far, to lose so much.
“Victoria Adams, U.S.A., to the rink please!” announced one of the judges, “Alright, show us your routine,” He said, obviously bored.

So, I showed him my routine.

After, he asked me some questions. “Victoria, how old are you?”
I am seventeen.
“Eighteen.” I lied. That’s one of the things I hated most. What I regretted most.
“How long have you been skating?”
“Fourteen years.” I said. I was telling the truth. I have been skating since I was three.

Now, the only question was: am I in, or am I out?

I was in.

My best friend Alice and I, including my aunt, Addison, packed our bags seven weeks after my callbacks. One week before the Olympics.
Soon, day one came. I did very well for a few days on, and then, it all went downhill from the stalking of reporters. The reporters were snotty paparazzi life – ruiners.
I walked down the hall, - leading to another hallway with the woman's locker room - to talk to Alice, the only person I know that can eat an entire extra – large container of Flinstone Vitamins and NOT get sick.
Alice is weird. But, she considers me weird, too, and that is how our friendship works. We call each other stuff like that with no pun intended.
I needed to ask her something important, medal threatening. I couldn’t have anyone listening to me but her, or that would have a big consequence.

Mia

There was one particular figure skater who caught my eye. She was the redhead from Seattle.
For some reason I envied Victoria. She was a fantastic figure skater, with the triple jumps and figure eights. Maybe I envied her because she was a pretty redhead with sea green eyes. Maybe I was jealous of her for having a friend who was there for her twenty – four seven. But, for some reason I could not figure out why I wanted to make her suffer. I didn’t know myself well enough. I wanted to make her hurt.
I was passing through the hallway leading to the woman’s locker room at the Olympics stadium, when I heard her talking to her friend down the next hallway.
“Do you think anyone noticed that I was seventeen?” Victoria asked her long black haired friend.
“No, no, I mean that; no, no, no.” The blue eyed friend said.
Now I had something to use against Miss Adams. I had the truth. The truth would hurt her.
“Now go shower! You’re sweating like a pig!” The friend said.
“Alright, I will, Alice!” Victoria argued.
“Good.” Alice smiled, pleased with her control.
Me, Mia Turkie, (A.K.A ‘Poultry’) would be famous for my discovery. I would be a famous member of the paparazzi.

Victoria

I would’ve decked Mia right then and there if I knew she’d spied on my conversation with Alice. But, I hadn’t known, and I was SO angry with her.
Jade Young,a judge, entered the woman’s locker room to come announce to me that I was disqualified for lying about my age.
I was devastated. Looking back on it now, I think, yes. Yes, I was impatient, stupid, impulsive. Yes, I am the WORST decsision - maker in the world. But, I knew things would lighten up.
Fourteen Years Later

I stood on the winner’s platform, awaiting my gold medal at twenty – one years old. I was glowing with happiness. I was with no regrets.

Epilogue

Victoria went on to participating in Winter Olympics competitions for several years on, winning several gold, silver and bronze medals in figure skating.
As for Mia, she ended up in a padded cell wearing an orange jumpsuit for some odd reason that only her and the police know about.
Alice, our vitamin loving friend, married a director for a Flinstones Vitamin factory; and lived in vitamin heaven for the rest of her overly healthy life.
Isn’t that cliché, reader? A happy ending? But, I loved my characters so much that I let them live in happiness. Yes, I like the happy ending better, too.

True Ghost Stories/Peter Pan -- 11-17-09

I am currently reading two books: True Ghost Stories, and Peter Pan.
True Ghost Stories is a book that has several ghost stories in it, that the author claims to be true. There are several different settings and characters in this book, including a girl named Betty Reese and her family, and in the story she is mentioned in is taken place in a house where a murder was commited.
Peter Pan is about some kids named Wendy, John, and Micheal, and this boy named Peter Pan, who the kids claim to their mother that he comes at night. One example of that is that Wendy told her mother that Peter comes and plays his pipes for her while she is sleeping.
Their mother, Mrs.Darling, first heard of Peter Pan when she was (quoting the book) 'tidying up her children's minds.' At first the book is slow, but by the end of chapter one, it gets really interesting. Peter Pan takes place in I believe, England, in somewhere around the late 1800s to early or mid 1900s. They haven't exactly metioned where they are and the year yet.(I'm barely into the book yet.)
Happy Reading!

The Olympian Goddesses -- 11-04-09

The Olympian Goddesses
By JM
Dear Reader,
If you don’t care about the content of this short story, take precautions. Do NOT read further. On the bright side, if you have an interest in Greek mythology, I would be glad for you to read on.
Sincerely,
Jenna McMains
Okay, so a lot of people aren’t interested in Greek mythology, and that’s perfectly fine. Others haven’t learned about it in school yet. How would you like to learn about Greek mythology? In particular, do you want to learn about the five Olympian goddesses on the Olympian council? If so, keep reading.
First off, there are six major Olympian goddesses, and only five on the Olympian council. The Olympian council is how the gods and goddesses met up and discussed recent events or how to deal with a person or a thing, or a monster of some type. (If you’re wondering, Hades is a major Olympian, but he is not on the council. Neither is Hestia, another major goddess.)I will be informing you about the five major goddesses that were on the council.
Okay, on to the information business.
Athena
Athena is the goddess of battle, wisdom and useful arts. (I read that in Rick Riordan’s book, The Demigod Files). She was even born from Zeus’s head, particularly, his skull, in full battle armor! She was Greek battle armor, to be exact. Her symbol is the owl.
Artemis
Artemis is the sister of Apollo, another god. She is the goddess of hunting and maidens. She also rules the moon, while her brother (again, Apollo) rules the sun. Her symbol is the bear, female bear.
Demeter
Demeter is the mother of Persephone, who I think is the goddess of spring, but I’m not sure. I read in The Demigod Files that Demeter is the goddess of agriculture. (A demigod is the child of a god that is half – god and half – human.) Demeter’s symbols are barley and the red poppy.

Aphrodite
Aphrodite is the goddess of love. Her symbol is the dove. In some myths, her son is Eros.

Hera
Hera’s symbols are the peacock, cow and lion. She is the wife of Zeus and goddess of marriage and
motherhood.

As you can see, Greek mythology has a lot of details to it. I’m just learning them all, too!
I hope you enjoyed this!

Fort Snelling was awesome!(Even though we had an odd conversation about chamber pots.)I liked learning about life in he 1800s and at the fort.
We also went to a blacksmith's shop, and we got a nail as a souvineir!
At the fort, they showed us how they treated people with certain diseases, and I found out that germs hadn't been discovred till the 1870's! (I think)
Fort Snelling was definately my favorite trip so far.

The Thirteen Colonies -- 10-24-09

The reason that occurred a lot when founding the Thirteen Colonies was that they wanted religious freedom. People from England wanted religious freedom and in order to get that freedom they went to America, and they would start colonies to have their freedom. One example of a state that was founded for religious freedom was Massachusetts.
What was a little different from Massachusetts was that Rhode Island was settled by people who were kicked OUT of Massachusetts for their beliefs. North Carolina was founded for WAY different reasons than religious persecution, though, it was founded by eight people who wanted land to grow tobacco and also trade it, along with indigo and cotton.
New Hampshire was founded because people wanted a fishing colony for people who didn’t like the Puritan rule. The Puritans also wanted religious freedom.
Wanting religious freedom back then helps the U.S. A. today, because now we have religious freedom because they got their freedom back then.

Vertebrates -- 10-24-09

There are seven groups of vertebrates, three are fish groups.
Fish are cold – blooded. There are three types of fish that are all vertebrates: Cartilage fish, jawless fish, and bony fish. Some bony fish are Ocean Sunfish, Beta fish and Clownfish. Did you know a shark is a cartilage fish? A shark’s not bony! Their skeleton’s made of cartilage! I did not know that. Some other cartilage fish are skates and rays. Then there are THE ONLY two jawless fish, lampreys and hagfish.
Next there are amphibians. Amphibians are cold – blooded. Their life starts out in water and is ended on land most of the time. Some amphibians are toads, frogs and salamanders. Toads have shorter legs than frogs, and amphibians have skin that is moist.
Next there are reptiles. Reptiles are cold – blooded and their heart has three chambers. Some reptiles are turtles, lizards and snakes. All reptiles have feet with claws. Reptiles also can sense sound with their eyes. Cool, right?
Next there are birds. Birds are warm – blooded, and they have bones covered with holes. Bones covered with holes! It must be weird to see their skeletons. Having holes in their bones makes it easier for them to fly though, so at least it’s natural. Some birds are hummingbirds, swans and penguins.
Mammals: People are mammals. Dogs and deer and wolves are mammals. Mammals are warm – blooded and they have hair, blood and blood vessels. Mammals have a heart with four chambers, and generally have four limbs.
I know a ton from this series of books called Percy Jackson and the Olympians. It's by Rick Riordan and the first book is called The Lightning Thief and there's five books total plus two other extra ones that are in the series but they aren't like... main books. Do you get that? Anyways, if you have any questions about Greek mythology or the series, go ahead and comment and ask me. Here's a URL to Rick Riordan's site.

At The Beach -- 09-23-09

I went to Florida over spring break this year and we went to Clearwater Beach. I was nearly swallowed by the Gulf of Mexico and I buried my brother alive. It was fun, and my brother dug a really deep hole and when he got to the bottom, all it was was mud. When we got back to the condo we were staying at we all were sunburned. My brother looked like Darth Maul, and I couldn’t slug anybody in the van or else it’d hurt their skin. I can’t exactly remember how bad my sunburn was, but my face and back got it bad. Sometimes when I bump a volleyball and I hit my bone multiple times, it reminds me of getting sun burnt.
The beach was pretty and it had white sand – loaded with buried cigarettes (EWW!) pens and other litter. People really shouldn’t be lazy and not pick up their junk!
