Food for snails -- 05-02-12

Do snails have a preference of foods?

If they do do they prefer lettuce cheese meat or candy.

We will measure how many times a snail goes for a specific food namely 4 trials for each snail.

Record which food the snail goes for.

Candy, hot dog, lettuce, cheese, cardboard .

Prediction: Snails will prefer lettuce.

Step 1: Set up Cardboard x-shape

Step 2: Get cardboard wet

Step 3: Place foods in 4 sections of x

Step 4: Make data table.

Step 5: Place first in center.

Step 6: Record results for trial 1

Step 7: Repeat for snail 1 three more times and then do 4 trials with second snail. Make sure to record data.

Step 8: Report findings on blog

The evidence for this is that the most colnies and the largest we located here. We had one area or fault in preparation and that was we cracked the augor which was a nuitriet derived from soy. We observed after preparation 24 hours later and 48hours. Only the toilet, water fountain and sink and colneis. The sink Had no evidence of bacteria. Bacteria is every where. I wonder if we had observed for a longer time if the bacteria would continue to grow.

Global Warming And Ocean acidification -- 09-28-11

Over the last 5 million years the average temperature has been gradually decreasing (fig 1). On a larger scale the earths temperature over the last 65 million years ago, rose, then decreased sharply very sharply.then stayed roughly constant. Then rose sharply and decreased again.(as shown in Fig 1 and 2) On a way larger scale of 540 million years has risen and fallen while going though Glacial Periods and high temperatures. Note: about 150 years ago there was a rise in temperature, although this about the first recorded controlled use of fire I do not believe these two events are connected. (I was joking there) My opinion is that rate of warmth may have been accelerated but i do not believe there is enough recent data to show so. What the Carbon dioxide is doing is causing Ocean Acidification. Ocean Acidification is the name given to the ongoing increase in the pH and increase in acidity of the earths oceans caused by the uptake of carbon dioxide is the atmosphere. Usually when the carbon molecules in the air in increase by 4 one will diffuse into the seawater. mean about one quarter of carbon dioxide in the Earths atmosphere ends up in the oceans. This increased amount of carbon messes up the chemistry of marine organisms. In shellfish this messes up the chemistry of their shells. The carbon bonds with the calcium and creates CaCo3 which when in highly acidic waters dissolves. This means do to carbon dioxide the water become more acidic. This carbon is adsorbed by the shellfish and there shells become weaker. Long story short that's very bad.

Water Pollution -- 10-27-09

Water Pollution

Why is water pollution so bad?

Water pollution is wear the bodies of water are polluted by bioaccumulated toxins from the environment over the life span that can no longer support full biological diversity, deforestation from acid rain, and many other effects. These effects are, of course, specific to the various contaminants

What are some sources of water pollution?

Some of the sources of water pollution are many causes for water pollution but two general categories exist: direct and indirect contaminant sources. Direct sources include effluent outfalls from factories, refineries, waste treatment plants…that emit fluids of varying quality directly into urban water supplies. In the United States and other countries, these practices are regulated, although this doesn’t mean that pollution can’t be found in these waters.

Consequence of water pollution

Some of the consequences of water pollution are once a bloom occurs; its negative effects can multiply rapidly. The green slime can foul up boat propellers and make swimming unpleasant. Nutrients can also cause weeds and other undesirable plants to flourish, increasing the problem. The algal bloom impairs water quality, and if the waterway is source for municipal water supplies, it can be expensive to removed impurities and odors. Masses of algae can wash up on shore, decaying and producing hydrogen sulfide gas, which smells like rotten eggs.

What can be improving the quality water pollution?

What can be done to improve the quality of water after it has become polluted is involve find sustainable ways for recycle or dispose of pollutants before they contaminate soil, water, or air. Preventing pollution in urban areas is often largely a public relations task. People need to be educated about proper ways to dispose of waste. Showing each other where waste goes and the problems it can create in our watersheds is an effective way to get the message across.

What are some actions to prevent pollution?

To prevent water from getting polluted are to be careful about what you throw down the sink or toilet. Don’t throw paints, oils, or other forms of litter down the drain. Use environmentally household products, such as washing power, household cleaning agents and toiletries. Take great care not to overuse pesticides and fertilizers. This will prevent runoff of the materials into nearby water sources. Don’t throw litter into rivers and lakes, make sure it is safe to collect the litter and put it in a nearby dustbin.

What are nitrates?

Nitrates are natural compound present in all ecosystems. It is one of the chemicals essential to plant life but too much can be a problem for plants and animals. It is also a component of chemical and manure based fertilizers. Nitrates get into water supply from sources such as areas of high fertilizer use, livestock feedlots and pastures, and sewage treatment areas. A nitrate is applied for plants but during rainstorms it can be washed directly into nearby ponds and streams via surface flow or though tile drainage systems.

What are some high effects on nitrate?

Effects do high nitrate level have on people are that the fish have toxins in them because the sea is filled with toxins and when us humans fish and caught a fish that is filled with toxins. We eat the fish and now we have toxins in us after we ate the fish, then we may die.

Is nitrates in are drinking water?

Considering being the safe level for nitrates in drinking are levels in water can cause methemoglobinemia or blue bay syndrome, a condition found especially in infants less than six months. The stomach acid of an infant is not as strong as in older children and adults. This cause an increase in bacteria that can readily convert nitrate to nitrate.

What should a person do if there are nitrates in water supply?

Should a person do if there are high levels in their water supply is if you receive municipal water, then your municipality is required by law to regularly test and keep nitrates levels below the MCL for the public water supply. Municipality’s choices to reduce nitrate levels usually include the first three actions discussed.

What can we do to prevent nitrates from entering our water supply?

To help prevent nitrates from entering our water supply by limiting fertilizers use and apply only at appropriate times. Nutrients in chemical fertilizers can runoff into local waterways, and could enter sources of drinking water. If you must fertilize, always follow the application instructions. Never over fertilize. Control runoffs and soil erosion. Reducing erosion and preventing runoffs will reduce the amount of sediments and nutrients entering the watershed. Start a compost pile and recycle yard waste.this both reduces waste and creates a natural fertilizer for your lawn. Plant trees and shrubs. Both filter and control polluted runoff, take up nutrients, and reduce soil erosion.

Ok here I go about Volcanoes. The first type of volcano is called acomposite volcano, these volcanoes are made up of a mixture of cinders and lava flows. These volcanoes are very explosive there lava is High sillica/High water. This lava is very slow moving and can clog easily to make the volcano eurupt explosivly. The second type of Volcano is the shield volcano. They have slanting sides and usally really tall they have aa and pahoehoe or low sillica/highwater and low sillica/low water lava. The last type of volcano is the cindr volcano. These volcanos are made of cinders(Duh :) and vertully no lava flows. They have tall sides and have high sillica/low water. Hope you liked my report. : ]
