Cactus Blog -- 05-02-12

Our experiment involved cacti. We wanted to know what environment would be best for cactus growth. We had a cactus in the incubator about 93 degrees F with paper over the incubator door window we also put one in a mini fridge 45 F no light either then we had a cactus in the closet for room temperature 76F. Our controlled variables were light exposure and the amount of water we gave the cactus which was two squirts from a spray bottle every three days. Inaccuracies the cactus in the closet was exposed to more sunlight because other teams had their experiment in the closet so it was opened often. The fridge was opened for food often as well. Another problem was that the temperature in the incubator was too hot for the cactus at 93f when a cactus is better in 85f degrees. Our cactus was a Cardon or false saguaro is native to Mexico and Baja California. It grows to 30 feet in height and 3 feet in diameter. Also its lifespan is 100+ years. Here is a movie made by my teammate of my cactus being cut open.

the organisms appeared non living because the enviroment was not sutible for the type of organisms in the lab test we did but that depends on the type of a liquid. The test we did was we took three different liquid sugar water, salt water, and regular water. My team used salt water and we put brine shrimp in the salt water and they didn't hatch then we put polyacrylate crystals they are exorbitant they hardly did any thing they expanded a little but not much. Then we put radish seeds an a cotton ball with some salt water in it but it didn't grow. Next yeast was put in the salt water and it hardly did anything it sank and thats it.
volcanoes -- 11-15-09

There are five different types of volcanoes. Composite, cindercone, shield, caldera, and fissure volcanoes.

Lets start with composite volcanoes. A composite volcano is made up of solid lava in layers like a cake. It becomes taller with every layer. Some composite volcanoes include Vesuvius, Krackatoa, Fujiyama, and Mount st. Helens. They have fairly steep sides and they are ten thousand feet tall or more.

Next are the cinder cone volcanoes. A cinder cone volcanoes are almost entirely made of loose grains of cinders. They are small for a volcano but I'm not saying that they are small compared to us. Cinder cone volcanoes only get up to one tousand feet tall.

Now we are going to talk about shield volcanoes. Shield volcanoes can be hundreds of miles across. Shield volcanoes are made from frozen lava. Most of the time they have large craters at the top. Another type of volcano is "Giant" or caldera. The caldera volcano is a huge crater it can be many tens of miles across. These craters are on other volcanoes. They form by collapse.

The last type of volcanoes. Fissure volcanoes are cracks in the earth that spew out lava. The lava then pools and becomes solid and most of the time covers the crack.
