Fourth grade -- 06-03-10

Fourth grade was probably one of my favorite years ever! We did lots of blogging, reading and writing. We did a lot with the idea of simple machines and we also watch a lot of short, fun videos called Tim and Moby!
When we do blogging on our classroom blog it's REALLY fun. Some of what we blog about are assignments, and sometimes we blog about something that we came up with. It's also exiting to leave comments on other people's work, and it's even MORE exiting to get a comment back!
In fourth grade, we also do a lot of reading and writing! Some of the things we read are, Time for kids or Scholastic magazines or books like Shiloh and The Witches. Or a lot of times, we read our own free reading books, (there are lots of choices in our small "Library" in our classroom)
But my favorite thing to do in fourth grade is, WRITE!!! And that's lucky for me because here in fourth grade we do an ENORMOUS amount or writing! We write about provided writing prompts, like what's your favorite season and who's your superhero? We also write our blank books at the end of the year and illustrate them, which I'm sure you know is LOTS of fun! But the thing we do most is free writing, writing about anything you want. You choose your won topic or story!
We also do a lot of fun projects and stuff with simple machines. We studied about the six different types of simple machines (Lever pulley, inclined plane, screw, wheel and axle and the wedge.) Then we make our own simple machines and did a presentation in front of the class.
O.K., now here's a REALLY fun thing about 4th grade: Tim and Moby! I'll bet that you don't know what Tim and Moby is, do you? Well let me explain. Tim and Moby are short little "Movies" about, well about everything! Science, social studies, math, reading all sorts of things! We watch them frequently about stuff we just learned or about things that we are ABOUT to lean!

That was fourth grade, and it really WAS one of my favorite years EVER!!!!!

picture number 3 -- 04-30-10

Picture number three showed people working with the lever. One person was standing on one end and the other person was pushing down, trying to lift the other person up. It was harder to lift the person when the fulcrum (the part in the middle) was closer to the person trying to lift the other picture. When the fulcrum was closer to the person being lifted, it was easier to lift them.

This simple machine is called a lever. A lever is a board with a fulcrum ( or point) in the middle. This machine works better when the fulcrum is closer to the object that is being lifted.

If I lived back in the 1900's I would rather be the upper-class girl. I would have a big two story house and I would have no chores to do! I would have a bike, roller skates and a tennis court! I wouldn't have to go to school either! I would be home-schooled by a tutor. Life would be mostly easy, and I wouldn't have many things to worry about in life that most people in the 1900's had to face in life! This is why I would like to be the upper-class girl!!!

vowels poem -- 04-09-10

A is blue, like the sky on a clear day, or a bluebird chirping in the tree by the forever rolling waves of the ocean. Maybe it is the glittering scales of a fish while it swims in the clear blue water. A could be the blue in the future, that we don't know that is yet to be discovered.

E is orange, orange like a juicy orange on a hot summer day. Or maybe orange is the fire that we set on the campfire to roast marshmallows. Orange could be an unfinished thought that is in the mind of a slow walking tiger.

I is yellow. Yellow like the sun on a spring day. yellow is happiness that only you can know. Yellow can be the color of the old torn pages of a book that is passed on for all generations. Yellow is the nice sand on a relaxing beach.

O is green. Green like the leaves of a tree of the color of an unfound planet. Green is the open freedom and happiness that you find in the open fields of grass.

U is rainbow. An opening array of possibilities, a nice colorful surprise after it rains. Rainbow is whatever YOU want it to be. Rainbow is your choice of open possibilities yet to be found.

My vocab poem -- 04-08-10

The Sluth and the Case of the Missing Tooth

This poem that is told,
is about a sleuth
who works on a case
of the missing tooth.
He has a hunch
that the bunch
of people
who work at the booth
had something to do
with the missing tooth.
They get into mischief
and so it seemed that
those meandering people
who worked at the steeple booth
had something to do with the missing tooth.
So this detective he did recruit
all his nonchalant friends
(who went around all the dangerous bends.)
And with much apprehension,
this group went to the crime,
half past three was the time.
Yes this undeterred group
with a leader of a sleuth
went to the crime,
and found that a dime
had been left for the tooth.
They then realized
that this was no crime,
but only a misunderstanding.
For what had happened was this:
A neighborhood child
(who was very wild)
had lost his tooth,
what a sight.
So then on that night
the tooth fairy came
and left the child a dime.
So the story is told
of this sleuth and his friends
with a problem that they didn't know,
wasn't a problem,
not at all,
but only a tooth losing child.

Hoot -- 04-06-10

I just finished a really good book called Hoot, by Carl Hiaasen. Hoot is about this boy who's name is Roy. Roy moves around a lot, and has just moved from the highlands of Montana to the lowlands of Coconut Grove, Florida. There he is very unfortunately bullied by a large kid named Dana Matherson. Being bullied we all know is not fun, and has no up sides to it. But Roy would have never noticed the running boy if Dana hadn't been in the middle of squishing Roy's face up against the bus window. Therefore, since Roy's face was smashed on the window, he sees the running boy. This boy runs fast past the bus with no shoes, no backpack and no sign of stopping for the school bus. As soon as Dana releases Roy's face, he runs off the bus hoping to catch the running boy. In the middle of doing so, Roy bumps into a soccer girl named Beatrice who is trying to get on the bus as Roy tries to get off. She tells him to watch where he is going but he is running off the bus towards the running boy. He follows him through backyards and then to a golf corse. He attempts to follow the running boy all of the way but a golf ball unexpectedly hits him in the head.

Now, on the same day, there is construction site for a mother paula's pancake house. Curly, the bald construction foreman is angrily talking to a police man named officer Delinko. Curly is angry because someone has pulled his survey stakes out of the ground. He is mad and says that this is a crime of trespassing and vandalism. He yells at officer Delinko to file a report immediately. But Officer Delinko is curious. He asks Curly if maybe this is a comeback from a pancake rival. Or maybe a prank from some kids. Officer Delinko says that he isn't sure that pulling survey stakes out of the ground is a crime, but Curly is convinced.

Back to Roy. He is getting bullied by Dana Matherson more and more. But it hardly seems to bother him because he is so curious about the running boy. He wants to know what was going on and why Beatrice didn't want him to get off the bus. But he soon finds out. He is at lunch and bumps into Beatrice. Also known as Beatrice the bear. He makes an bad mistake and pulls Beatrice over to ask her if she knows the running boy. She tells him that it's not his beeswax and walks away. Roy has some suspicions about her and that she DOES know the running boy. But with Beatrice not telling him, he decides to go back to the golf corse and find out for himself. When he gets there he goes past the golf corse the the trees and finds a camp. But no boy. He stumbles upon a brown sack and when curiosity gets the best of him, he dumps the bag on the ground. He then finds that the sack holds cottonmouth moccasins, a very poisonous type of snake. These snakes are on the ground, slithering around and Roy is very afraid. Then, a voice behind him says: On the count of three, step back. Roy does not listen so the person (whoever they might be) pulls him back. This boy does not want his identity to be revealed, so he covers Roy's head with a jacket. Roy assumes that this is the running boy.

Curly is raging with fury. More pranks have been pulled and he is NOT happy about it. Crocodiles have been put in the toilets, more survey stakes have been pulled out of the ground, snakes have been put on theground and seats have been pulled off of the bulldozers. All of these odd pranks have been done for a very good reason that unfortunately, Curly does not know. They have been pulled because of owls. Tiny little owls that live in holes underground left behind from other animals. They live where the construction is about to happen. That means that the little baby owls will be buried if the construction goes as planned. And who do you think was doing all of these pranks? The running boy. Also known as Mullet Fingers, and get this, He is Beatrice the bear's STEP BROTHER!!! When Roy finds this out, he is determined to help. But how does all of this work out? Find out if you read Hoot.

I REALLY liked this book, and I REALLY recommend that you read it too!

The girl and the cat # 1

One day I was sitting in a chair waiting for my teacher after school. I decided to be a good student and do my homework while waiting. So I did. But when I got to my math I realized that I needed my scissors so I ran upstairs to my classroom to get them from my desk. I brought them back downstairs to the waiting room and started to cut. When I was done, I went back upstairs to put them away. Only to find a black cat at my desk! Now, I am very superstitious so, I couldn't cross paths with him but if I didn't, I wouldn't be able to get the scissors away in time! I started to talk to the cat. "Here kitty kitty." I began but the cat pounced on my face!
I, the Jabberwocky…wait, don’t run away! Everyone is afraid of me, I can’t stand it! It’s like I’m a big, scary monster or something. (o.k., I am!) But that’s me on the outside. On the inside I’m a friendly, caring person. Now, you might wonder if I’m so friendly and stuff, than how did all of those tales about me being the worst “thing” on the planet get around? I’ll tell you exactly how those came to be around here.

It all started one day when I, the Jabb (short for Jabberwocky) was unknown to the human species. I was sitting on a big tree log drinking berark drink (berries and bark) and gnawing on some tree leaves. I was reading my book that I found in the woods, I taught myself to read and I now enjoy the stuff a lot. Over the years I’ve found 11 books, I read them quite frequently. Anyways, just as I was sitting there minding my own business, feeling at peace with the world, when at once I heard a voice, it said “Ahh… so I have come upon a beast.” I look up, there stands a man with a sword. The sword is pointed strait at me. The man comes closer and then and there tries to take a swing at my arm. I purposely let him. I fall to the ground. Now wait, my friend, don’t feel sad, I am tricking this man, you see. I do not want to hurt a helpless human but to avoid being killed myself, I must do it and for all of my life I regret it.

I lay on the ground and pretend to be hurt. Just as I suspected he comes towards me and I quick as a flash grab him. He screams, “help, help!” because he has left his sword on the ground. Listen, I say to the man, remember I don’t want to hurt you, but it looks as though I must. I, being a 10 foot tall giant, powerfully throw the man to the ground with one swing of my arm. I am afraid to look. Will this man be dead? I look, he is. I took the man’s body back to the village and left a note saying:

“This was the doings of the regretful Jabb (Jabberwocky). I say this from my heart, I am truly sorry. I did not want it to come to this.”

Despite my note, I was hated from then on. No one even gave a thought to my note. I regret that day I killed that poor man (100 years ago) and I weep almost every day at the thought of it. If I could I would forgive and forget, I really would, but no one will forgive me. I can’t explain it to you it’s too hard. But I can tell you that once a month on the second Monday of the month a man comes into the forest and tries to kill me. I can’t live to kill another person, so I take them and drop them back in the village with one broken limb as a threat. No one has ever killed the mighty, kind, caring, loving Jabb and no one ever will. And no one as ever forgiven me yet, although they will come through for me one day. I know it in my heart.

Now you know that I am a loving caring person inside.
When Katie and her family move to Georgia they too live in a apartment. Where lynn and her mother can only dream of the house that they want. To keep the family up and running while saving for there dream house both parent's most work overtime.

Roller coasters -- 01-08-10

From the first roller coaster (the switchback) in 1884 to the latest thrill ride (the x2) today, a lot has changed! The switchback was only five cents to ride, think about how much that is compared to today! So much more has changed too! Think about how fast you go on a roller coster today, the switchback only goes 6 mph! Now here's something even more different! The switchback took FOUR YEARS to build, and the x2 only took SIX MONTHS to build! That's not even HALF of the time that it took to build the switchback! WOW!!! Haven't roller coasters REALLY changed!

School back in 1862 -- 12-02-09

What you ask, was it like to go to school in the year 1862? Come now, I will show you. Now, close your eyes, travel in time to about 150 years ago. You are waking up and walking about a MILE to school. Now, you are entering the building at 7:00 am and staying until 4:30 pm. You are now probebly sitting down in your two people wooden desk. Now... the teacher is asking a question, is she? Yes she is, she is asking what the sum of 70+30 is? You are raising your hand, she calls your name, now WAIT! What you would normally do is say 100. Right? Yes you would, but not in the year 1862 you wouldn't. You would stand up and say... the sum to the problem is 100 Miss Wilt (if that's your teacher's name) Now what you would normally do is sit down, but not in this time period, you would stay standing uo until the teacher tells you to sit down, after she tells you to sit down you curtsey as a girl of bow as a boy you then say thank you miss Wilt and sit down. Much different, isn't it?

The school house that you are in is VERY small. It is only one room. And that ONE ROOM holds grades first through eighth. On one side of the room would be the girls and on the other side would be the boys. They were on different sides of the room to be seperated. Why are they seperated you may ask, well, you have to remember that this was back in 1862 an that answer is beoyned my reach. Remember that you were sharing a desk with another student and if you didn't get along with your deskmate you would be moved next to a student of opposite gender.

Now, let's say that you are giggling and whispering to your deskmate. The teacher DOES NOT like that at all infact, you get punished for it. Your punishment would be to sniff the blackboard. What would happen is that the teacher would draw a circle on the blackboard. You would be told to come up to the front of the classroom and press your nose up agenst the blackboard until you have learned your lesson. There are a lot more punishments but right now I will only list one more. Pretend that you are talking when you arn't supossed to. The teacher could make you come up to the blackboard and write "I will not talk" 50-100 times.

Now, although you would probly like to learn more about what school was like in 1862, I am sad to tell you that we are out of time so...

BACK TO 2009!!!!!!!!!!

The witches: Book vs. Movie -- 11-20-09

The book is very different than the movie The Witches. In the book the witches would always wear pointy shoes to cover their square toes. In the movie the Witches would wear flat front shoes. Also in the Book the boy gets caught and something happens... in the book he tries to run away. One last thing that's different, in the book, the Grandma gets some sickness... BUT in the movie she got diabetes. Here are some things that are the same: In the movie the grandma has a missing thumb and also in the movie. In both (movie and book) a certain TYPE of witch is very ugly. There are lots of other differences an same things but you'll just have to read the book AND watch the movie to find out...

A book where imagination comes to life -- 11-18-09

A suspected boy, A panther, A fire, An oil company, A missing teacher how do these connect, you say they don't, but do they? Let me half answer that question, I will tell you that they DO connect but however, I will only give you snippets of how. Let's start with the teacher, Mrs. Bunny Starch, she is the most hated teacher in the Trubman school. She teaches biology at the private school to in- eager students. There is one odd boy in Mrs. Starch's class. He is the suspected boy, Smoke. How is he suspected, that will come later. One day in Mrs. Starch's class a the boy named Smoke is not paying attention to Mrs. Starch's class. Mrs. Starch doesn't like that, so they get in a fight. Mrs. Starch is about to poke him with a pencil when Smoke eats it! There are two other students in Mrs. Starch's class, Nick and Marta. Their names will pop up later on. The day after the pencil eating situation there is a field trip to a place called Black Vine Swamp. The field trip DOES NOT go well. First of all, there is a fire (the fire I told you about earlier.) Well, at the field trip Mrs. Starch has to go back into the fire while the students are boarding back on the bus, to get a girl named Libby her asthma inhaler. The kids and teachers get worried when Mrs. Starch doesn't come back to the school after the field trip. She drove her own car out to Black Vine Swamp so when a fire started up, the bus drove out without Mrs. Starch onboard, everyone thought that she would drive herself out or there once she found Libby's asthma inhaler, they were wrong. Now, let's tell you about Nick and Marta. They are getting worried about Mrs. Starch themselves. They are going overboard! They sneak into Mrs. Starch's HOUSE! They look for any helpful signs that might lead to where Mrs. Starch is hiding. They don't find anything until a man named Twilly finds them he gives them some clues. Now the oil company, their name is the Red Diamond Oil Company. They are making slow progress. When they finally buy a section that they can drill in they find out that it has NO OIL! They are desperate so they drill in a section that belongs to the state of Florida so it is really illegal. All of this ties together, Somehow...

to the Castle -- 11-16-09

Grandmama, I said what if one of the witches was to not eat the formula, what if she were to hide? Nonsense! she exclaimed so loud that I almost fell right out of her hand. Never talk with such negative rubbish, This plan is sure to work! When My grandmother said this I half believed her, half didn't. Well I thought, I'll just have to wait until tonight to find out!
We spent the whole day making mouse maker from the ingredients that we had gathered the day before. We found out that we made too much and ended up with five thousand bottles, Four thousand more than our original plan! when we found this out we simply laughed and said that we would reuse our only one thousand bottles.
Tonight at five-o-clock on the nose we went into the cellar where we were keeping the cats, we took one cat out, that we named Mary and fed her a bottle of mouse maker. In twenty six seconds instead of a little cat , we had a mouse! When we were sure that the mouse maker worked, we set out for the grand high witches house, by the time that we reached her front door it was exactly six-o-clock. My grandmother knocked quite loudly on the door. A Very peculiar servant answered the door I sssupose ttthat yyyou arre hhhere ttto ssse MMMiss MMMary HHHallet (the grand high witch) Yes my grandmother stated, yes I am. During all of this I was safely tucked away in my Grandmother's handbag. RRRight ttthis wwwway mmmam he told my grand mother. We followeded him into the living room in where the fire was burning up quite a flame and the grand witch was writing something down that she said was very private so I assumed that it was another formula. Ahamm the servent grunted ttthe nnnight bbbrings yyyou aaanother vvvisiter. he moaned with great bordom. Henry, you may leave and thank you for the warning the grand high witch sweetly stated.

My grandmother looked her right in the eye and said, Miss Hallet, I assume that what I am about to tell you might be over whelming but let's try not to make a fuss. The Grand high witch was now most extremly interested and pushed my Grandmama to go on. I have reilized that everyone likes the taste of sweets much more than the taste of nutritinous foods but what I have conducked will allow you to get the taste of whatever you want but still have the nutrition of the food infront of you. What that is impossible, upsurd the grand high witch exclaimed. Allow me to explain my grandmother went on. If you have a plate of healthy broccoli infront off you but really what you want is a big cocolate chip cookie this stuff will just about do the trick. All you do is put this whole bottle in the food and you say what flavor you want out-loud and then you shall have that taste but still the nutrition of the food in front of you. Marvelous, the grand high witch whispered in awe. In fact, my grandmother stated, your whole castle can try it if you would like. Well that seemed to do the trick, in two minutes and six seconds she had gotten everyone in the castle to come down and for waiters put yucky spinach (that everyone in the castle hated) in front of them.

My grandmother passed out a bottle out to everyone in the castle sitting down and eagerly waiting for the moment for them to be able to try this marvoulous mixture. when everyone had a bottle, my grandmother instructed them to pour it in and say out loud what the flavor is that they want. They did so. In twenty-six seconds we had a bunch of mice in front of us. We went out the door and let the cats that we had thrown along side the house in cages inside the house. one by one we let them out of their cages and waited for them to smell the mice and wander in greedily. When all of the cats were inside the house, we skipped happily home, and celebrated. That's what I and my Grandmama did for the rest of our lives, concurring witches, and celebrating, all day every day, forever.

                          The Diamond of Darkhold
(The fourth book in The City Of Ember)

The people of Ember have emerged from their underground home of dark and gloominess. They now live in Sparks. But, what happens when Doon gets an idea so crazy, so unreal, so daring, a bit heroic and even to help his own village, Sparks. His village, Sparks, is running out of food and supplies for the hard winter, so Doon's idea to go back to Ember to collect food and leftover supplies, might just come in handy. But when Lina and Doon get to the mountainside in which Ember is under and climb down there, they find out that another family went dow the mountainside and into Ember. What a shock! What's more, they capture Doon and put him in chains! While Doon is there, they show him a diamond and he is sure that it was meant for the people of Ember. Now, if only he could unlatch the chains, get the diamond and go back freely to Sparks, he could make a difference ...

On October 15th my clone went to the Graue Mill with my class but she told me everything so here it goes.

inside the Graue Mill is the basement. The basement is old and noisy. It is noisy because the gears in the basement are turning round and round. In the basement there are three benches in a row. There is some history behind the Graue Mill basement that my clone has informed me of so here it goes. Many years ago during the time when the slaves where running away for freedom, the Graue Mill basement was a place that the runaway slaves could stop, sleep and eat.

That is basically all that my clone told me about Graue mill so I Guess we're done here!

A city that was underground... -- 10-02-09

The City Of Ember, that was probably the best book I've ever read!

The book is about a city that is underground. The people who live in this city don't even know of the outside world, all they know of is the dying city of Ember. All people who live there believe that that Ember is the only city, nowhere else. Except Lina and Doon they are getting suspicious of an outside world, besides Ember. They are even more suspicious when Lina finds some sort of instructions the problem is that Lina's sister, Poppy, chewed them up! Now it's up to Lina and Doon to put the pieces together and save Ember, Or fail and their city will be dead for good.

I loved this book and it was so good I couldn't put it down until the last word!

Unscramble your eggs... -- 10-02-09

My favorite quote from this week was...

"You can't unscramble eggs."

This was my favorite quote because the eggs are sort of like your mess. You can't unscramble your eggs or your mess. Although you can't unscramble your mess (eggs) you can still try to fix it.

make friends... -- 09-25-09

My favorite quote from this week was...
"Make friends before you need them." By Unknown

This was my favorite quote because it was true to life. Because if you have been mean to other people when they have needed a friend and then one day you need a friend then you cant expect them to be a friend to you. Because when they were in their time of need you didn't help them so they shouldn't be a friend to you.

And that's why I liked this quote the best!

what I think of the book Honus and me -- 09-25-09

Honus and me is about a boy who likes baseball an plays baseball too. He also collects baseball cards. Then one day he is cleaning out an attic and comes upon a baseball card that is worth a half a million dollars. THat baseball card is not only worth a half a million dollars but also brings an unforgettable experience to his life... But, you'll just have to read the book yourself to find out.
I would definitely recommend this book to baseball lovers. But even if you aren't a baseball lover I would still probably still recommend this book to you. I liked this book to you because it's mostly about the adventure that this baseball card brings him. I am not a baseball lover but I still liked this book and I think you will to!

hello to quote lovers! -- 09-11-09

Hi,

If you are reading this then that means that you want to know what my favorite quote and it is...

"If you have much give your wealth. If you have little give your heart." --Arab Proverb
This was my favorite quote because it was talking about something that is true : You should share what you have even if it's not money or something valuable. If kindness and friendship is all you have, share that with the rich. If you have money and wealth share that with the poor.
Bye for now!

quote 9/4 -- 09-04-09

My favorite quote was:
"Like a ten-speed bike most of us have gears we do not use."

I think by this he means that we have moods that we do not use or sometimes do not even know the feeling of them and sometimes we do not even know we have them.
Like if you are a happy person and one day you are exposed to the feeling of anger you won't know what it feels like. (you don't know the feeling of the speed.)
