Diary of Anne Frank and Animal Farm -- 05-06-09

We read the book Animal Farm and then we saw the play My Heart In A Suitcase that is about Diary of A Young Girl and I made some connections with the two of the things. I also made some connections with black people and the play. We also saw a play about Harriet Tubman and I made some connections with that play too. The regular animals in animal farm felt kinda felt kinda like how Anne and the other Jews felt. The Jews also felt like they had no power, rights, and were not treated the same as people who were not Jews. In animal farm the animals that were not pigs or dogs were treated the same way. The Jews were also treated like blacks were they had no rights, just like the blacks had no rights. Anne is like Harriet Tubman too, Harriet Tubman was trying to get to Canada so she could be safe and Anne was trying to get to England so she could be safe. Anne could not just go to any school, she had to go to a certain school because she was a Jew. Black people had to go to a certain school too, because they were not white. Anne was not allowed to sit on just any bench she had to sit on a bench only for Jews. Blacks had to sit on a certain bench too. Those are some connections that I have made with the play My Heart In A Suitcase.

They were there to debate about the Virginia and the New Jersey Plan they were going to try to come up with a compromise. Neither of them thought that it would be this hard.

Asked Edmond Randolph.

     "Even though that plan is okay, I still think that the Virginia Plan is better." said Edmond Randolph.

     "My plan makes just as much sense as yours does." In fact it makes more sense than yours does," replied William Paterson.

William Sherman, a patriot from Connecticut enters the room and immediately gets between the heated debate between William Patterson and Edmund Randolph. Things were getting very loud, and several delegates were looking on with dismay as it seemed the men would come to blows.

Hey guys, it seems like you both are getting a little hot under the collar. Take a minute to go for a walk and cool off, then we can talk about things.

Ok, are you guys ready to listen, because you've done enough talking. Here's what I've been thinking about. Both of you have some good ideas and some bad ones. I think that to make our new country strong, since the Articles of Confederation were so LAME, that we need to get this right. This is our second chance, and we can't mess it up.

William Patterson from New Jersey, I really like your idea of having each state with an equal number of representatives. That seems fair to everyone, and isn't our country founded on equality? If each state has the same number of votes then the smaller states will not feel slighted.

Oh, I know what you are going to say Edmund Randolph, "This isn't fair because we have more people." I hear you and also think that is the right thing to do by having population as the basis for representation. It would not be fair to have more people affected by laws without them having a fair share of "voice" in making the laws.

So, let's do this, create TWO PARTS for our legislature, one part called the Senate would give each state equal representation. This would make smaller states happy, while adding a House of Represntatives with it's membership based on population would be fair to the bigger states.

"What do you guys think?" "Well...." said Edmund Randolph. "I still think that..." interrupted William Patterson.

Nine days later after long debating it was put to a vote, and the good news spread as it passed five votes to four votes.

The bicameral (two parts) legislature was passed, and the basis for calculating population was decided that a census of the nation's population would be given every 10 years to account for changes. The last issue that was on the table as a sticking point was how to count enslaved African Americans as citizens. The South threatened to seced if they didn't get to count slaves as citizens. The Northern states knew this was a critical issue, but decided that creating a nation was more important than getting their way on the issue, and thus a compromise of counting each slave as 3/5 a person for population was struck. Slave trade would be ended by 1808, but many, many issues regarding slavery were not addressed at that time.

andnbsp;

Sure, I agree with that, says William Paterson. andnbsp;

William Sherman, a patriot from Connecticut enters the room and immediately gets between the heated debate between William Patterson and Edmund Randolph.andnbsp; Things were getting very loud, and several delegates were looking on with dismay as it seemed the men would come to blows.

Hey guys, it seems like you both are getting a little hot under the collar.andnbsp; Take a minute to go for a walk and cool off, then we can talk about things.

Ok,andnbsp; are you guys ready to listen, because you've done enough talking.andnbsp; Here's what I've been thinking about.andnbsp; Both of you have some good ideas and some bad ones.andnbsp; I think that to make our new country strong, since the Articles of Confederation were so LAME, that we need to get this right.andnbsp; This is our second chance, and we can't mess it up.

William Patterson from New Jersey, I really like your idea of having each state with an equal number of representatives.andnbsp; That seems fair to everyone, and isn't our country founded on equality?andnbsp; If each state has the same number of votes then the smaller states will not feel slighted.andnbsp;

Oh, I know what you are going to say Edmund Randolph, andquot;This isn't fair because we have more people.andquot;andnbsp; I hear you and also think that is the right thing to do by having population as the basis for representation.andnbsp; It would not be fair to have more people affected by laws without them having a fair share of andquot;voiceandquot; in making the laws.

So, let's do this, create TWO PARTS for our legislature, one part called the Senate would give each state equal representation.andnbsp; This would make smaller states happy, while adding a House of Represntatives with it's membership based on population would be fair to the bigger states.

andquot;What do you guys think?andquot;andnbsp; andquot;Well....andquot; said Edmund Randolph.andnbsp; andquot;I still think that...andquot; interrupted William Patterson.

Nine days later after long debating it was put to a vote, and the good news spread as it passed five votes to four votes.

The bicameral (two parts) legislature was passed, and the basis for calculating population was decided that a census of the nation's population would be given every 10 years to account for changes.andnbsp; The last issue that was on the table as a sticking point was how to count enslaved African Americans as citizens.andnbsp; The South threatened to seced if they didn't get to count slaves as citizens.andnbsp; The Northern states knew this was a critical issue, but decided that creating a nation was more important than getting their way on the issue, and thus a compromise of counting each slave as 3/5 a person for population was struck.andnbsp; Slave trade would be ended by 1808, but many, many issues regarding slavery were not addressed at that time.

Dear Diary,

I was mad when the British government would not allow colonist to move onto land west of the Appalachian Mountains. But, now I am furious, now that the British government is deeply in debt and need to pay for royal governor’s and British troops they want to tax us! We told them that the Parliament had no right to tax us without the vote of the delegates in their own assemblies. Mainly that is the reason that led us to rebel against the British. Rebel means to refuse to obey those in charge because of different ideas of what is right. To colonist liberty came to them later. Liberty means freedom.
June 23, 1763

The French and Indian War came to an end today. The British won the French and Indian War. Most people described the French and Indian War as a conflict between Great Britain and France in North America from 1756 to 1763. I am very happy today because now the war is over and that means that less people will be dieing and because we won the war. It is also a lot of stress off the shoulders of the people who were fighting in the war wife’s. I am just happy to know that I helped out. I am glad that I am alive. I want to say thank you to everybody who served for the British in the war. If you are wondering how the French and Indian war got called the French and Indian war it got its name from the British colonist were fighting- the French and their Native American allies. I just want to say I could not have done it with out all of your support and help. I also want to give a special shout out to all of the people who made me a better person. I want to say to the French that they put up a great battle, but I guess in the end one of us had to win. In result of the French and Indian War the British gained almost all of France’s land in North America. Because Spain had been an ally of France in the war Britain also gained the Spanish colony of Florida. But, in 1762, as the war was ending, France gave Spain much of Louisiana to keep it out of Britain’s hands. This agreement also included the city of New Orleans, an important part in the French fur trading business.

The French and Indian War came to an end today. Britain and France signed the Treaty of Paris, which officially ended the French and Indian War. Most people described the French and Indian War as a conflict between Great Britain and France in North America from 1756 to 1763. A lot of people were very happy today because now the war is over and that means that less people will be dieing. It is also a lot of stress off the shoulders of the people who were fighting in the war wife’s. If I survived the war I would be happy to know that I helped out. I would also be glad that I was alive. I want to say thank you to everybody who served in the war and I am glad that you made a treaty. If you are wondering how the French and Indian war got called the French and Indian war it got its name from the British colonist were fighting- the French and their Native American allies. I know I wonder how long the French and Indian War would have lasted if they would not have done the Treaty of Paris I also wonder who would have won I bet a lot of other people are wondering the same thing as me.

Hi, I’m a cookie; do you want to hear the story of how I died? First, these big white things that were quit sharp bit me, I am pretty sure that they were teeth. While the teeth were biting me I was getting moved around by a tongue, but by that time this stuff that was slimy and wet got all over me, it tickled. I think it was saliva. After that I went down this long tube type thing with muscles in it, it is called an esophagus. Then, I went into the stomach, that was so boring just to sit there, I am one of those type of food that always has to be moving. During the whole process I kept getting hit by these liquid from the gallbladder, liver, and the pancreas. Then, I went into another tube, but this one was super fun it was like a roller coaster it really is a small intestine. After that I went into another intestine, but this one was wider and shorter, it is called the large intestine. The last part of my journey through the digestive system was like a holding tank it was called the anus. When I left the human body I went into this thing that was like a swimming pool, I was doing the butterfly, the backstroke, and the breaststroke, it was so much fun expect for that it smelt really bad in there. Then, all of a sudden I got sucked in to a hole in the swimming pool. Now that I think about it swimming pools do not have holes, I guess it was not a swimming pool after all.
T-What Was The Plantation System?/ Topic

Dear Diary,                                                                                             October  21, 1753

Today, I went to the Big House. The Big House is the center of the Plantation System. The Plantation System is like a village in which enslaved people did almost all of the work. I went to the Big House to work, I work as a house slave. I mostly dust around the house or make beds. Sometimes I even serve the food or wash dishes. I only go to the Big House once every week, because they have so many slaves that work at the Big House. Today was a different day, because I got to cook! I never get to cook. I was so happy, because I love to cook. But, today I was even more happy, because today was a cold day and the Big House is always some what warm, but the kitchen, where I cooked is the warmest room in the Big House. That is why I am so happy today.

5 minute mystery -- 01-13-09

     One sunny day in the middle of July at Adrian, Georgia, Cozmo and Olive Veron were walking to their uncle’s sandwich shop called, “Sandwitch’s of Georgia”. It was the hottest day of the summer and they were sweating and they were not even half way there. It was only a quarter of a mile to, “Sandwitch’s of Georgia.” When they finally got there, their uncle Mort was making lunch for Mr. and Mrs. Birdict. Mr. Birdict was having a turkey sub with mayo, tomatoes, and pickles on white bread. He also had potato chips. Mrs. Birdict had a ham sandwich with mustard, mayo, lettuce, pickles, and wheat bread. She also had a side salad. Mr. and Mrs. Birdict were in their 60’s and were not very lazy. They were actually less lazy then some kids. They really liked the restaurant and they liked the kids too. They also liked Mort. Uncle Mort came out of his kitchen to talk to us. He needed us to go get some ham because his store was out of ham. By the time that we got to the store, all of the ham was gone. In fact, all of the stuff that you need to make sandwiches was gone. When we got back to “Sandwitch's of Georgia,” Uncle Mort looked really worried. He told us that while we were gone, he walked outside to take out the trash,. It only took a minute. When he walked back inside, he went in the kitchen and all of the sandwich condiments were gone. Even the chips and the pickles were gone. We also told Uncle Mort that all of the sandwich condiments and chips were gone at the store, too. I had a pretty good idea of who stole the food, but I still called Mr. and Mrs. Birdict, Maria, Rearden, and Cutter, because they were at the store before. I asked Mr. and Mrs. Birdict when they left. They told me that they left at the same time that we did. Uncle Mort said he had not yet left the kitchen until the Birdict’s were going to leave. Then he left the kitchen to talk to them. Five minutes after the Birdict’s left, Cutter and Rearden left. Two minutes after that Maria left. I asked Rearden and Cutter if they went to the bathroom or anything. They said they did not. Then, when I asked Marina if she went to the bathroon she said, "No" and that that she had not seen anybody go into the bathroom, but Mort. Who did the crime and how do Olive and Cozmo know who did it?
Answer: Marina did the crime. Olive and Cozmo knew that because when they called and told the people who were there to come, they did not mention why or that anything was stolen. Maria ended up going to jail and she admitted to the cops that she did it because she had a huge party, but had no money exept for the money used to pay for her meal at “Sandwitches of Georgia.” She was also the one who stole all of the sandwhich condiments at the store.

Snow Day -- 12-03-08

What I did on my snow day on Monday was I woke up found out that we had a snow day and I was so excited! My sisters and I were planing to go outside to build forts. So we did as planed, but it took a little longer than planed. It alway takes my little sister Curly cue so long because we have to help her a she is so picky. So since it takes her so long I got her dressed while my sister Dancer was having breakfast so we could get outside faster. So she was ready now my other sisters were getting all of their stuff around like hat, glove, snow pants, goat, and boots. My sister Dancer asked if I wanted to put on Curly cue’s or Brownies gloves? I said, “Curly cues.” After we got all of our clothes on we headed outside to have a snowball fight. It was me and Brownie vs. Dancer and Curly cue. We helped each other build forts and then make snowballs. Then it was war nobody really won but we did have a lot of fun. Then we went sledding in the backyard that was a lot of fun too. Then we went inside because we were all wet and cold we had hot chocolate and then had lunch. Then Dancer’s and my friend called she asked if we wanted to play we said sure we got dressed again and went in the backyard to sled we invited our sisters to come out so they did. Then we went over to our friends house she only lives three houses down. We tried to make walls in there tree fort but it did not work. We made a cave as well, but when we were digging we found $600 in the snow we each got $200. But we did not tell our parents because they would not let us keep it so then we went home. Later when we changed clothes she came over again and we played wii until she had to go home.

P.S. Our parents still do not know.

Home Town Tales: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow -- 11-25-08

     Most people think that Sleepy Hollow park is just the name of the park but those people would be wrong. Me and only me knows the real story. It was one dark, windy, cold, fall day at Sleepy Hollow Park, I was al by myself for only one hour. Now, most people think one hour is a short amount of time but when you are by yourself for an hour even at home it gets a little creepy. Not to mention that I was at Sleepy Hollow Park it was as scary as being in a haunted house at night and loosing your parents. I was freaked out not to mention scared. I saw something I had no clue what it was but I was sure that i had never seen it before. It was so dark that I did not even know where I was in the park after i saw it I had no clue were it went after that. All of a sudden I heard the most scary screech that scared me half to death. I thought that I was going to die because I had no clue where the thing went. All of the sudden I heard a lot of noise coming from behind me I was thinking please do not be the thing please do not be the thing. Then I questioned myself why am I doing this and not running maybe just maybe I should walk away slowly without making any noise or maybe the thing has really good hearing. You know what if it has heard me already it would be probably eating me not just watching that was when I saw it it had long sharp teeth, a pointy tail, very thick fur, the sharpest claws I have ever seen, had sorta like bad wings, and it looked like a combination of a dog, a wolf and a bat all mixed together. I was the weirdest animal or thing that I had ever seen. But after that I made it home safe and sound no harm done it must have been not very hungry, I did not look delicious, or it was not a carnivore. But after that day I have never seen the animal or “thing” since. But that does not mean it has not returned.

A Time I Got Hurt -- 11-19-08

One time I got hurt was when my teeth went up into my gums. I had friends over and we had cracks in our drive way. Everybody else was riding a scooter, skates, or a bike. I was going to turn but my wheel on my scooter got caught in the cracks of my drive way. I turned but my scooter did not so I fell and hit my two front teeth on the metal bars of my scooter and my teeth went up into my gums. By the time I got into my house which was not far away the blood was already all the way down my arm and dripping off. My mom told me to hold a wash clothe to my gums so I did. At first my mom and me thought that i knocked my teeth out. Then when I got the blood to stop we figured out that my teeth were up in my gums. She called our friend that is a dentist. He said to go to the oral sergeant tomoro . For the rest of the night I held a wash clothe on my gums. The next day I went to the oral sergeant. He said to just let my teeth come back in. If he would pull them down they would fall out. After my teeth came down he told me to go to the ortho dontist. The ortha dontist gave me a retainer and braces. Now you can not even tell it happened. But we sold the scooter There is still a blood stain in our garage from where the blood was dripping off my arm and i was walking inside my house to tell my mom.

Finding Out What Lions Eat -- 11-13-08

One day our class was at the zoo I went to my animal which was the lions. The one inside was eating and so was the one outside I spent a lot of time with both of them. First I went inside the zookeeper told me to stay away from the glass because she is really protective of her food and if you get close enough she will jump on the glass. The zookeeper walked by the glass and was not that close to her and she jumped on the glass to protect her food. The zookeeper said that is what she will do if you get to close to the glass. After that I went outside and the lion outside was eating meat with a bone in it. Mr. Meyer my teacher came up to me and asked if I knew what animal the lion was eating. I said no he said I know but I will not tell you right now. So me and four of my other friends that were doing the lion asked the zookeeper and she said it was horse or sometimes deer she thought. Mr. Meyer said that was what he thought they were eating too. That is how I figured out what lions eat at the zoo.

Big Zoo Lesson  -- 11-06-08

    My favorite moment at Potter Park Zoo was when the outside lion named Mashavuu started to get angry and would pace around. I was nervous but excited at the same time the lion would charge us and jump on the fence but I was excited because the days before that she would just sleep or lay down because lions sleep or rest 16-20 hours a day. I think she was getting angry because she wanted to go inside because she was cold, wanted a friend to play with because the tigers were playing and she was watching them but she had no one to play with, or maybe she was hungry and knew it was feeding time but didn't have food yet. I was kind of curios why she was doing that because like I said before she was not doing anything or being at active all. I could smell fresh air because the exhibit is outside. You could hear laughter, talking, an occasional silence, and animals vocalizing. I felt the bench because I was sitting on the bench. Mashavuu could feel could feel the grass and the dirt because she was walking on the ground. She also could feel the fence because she would jump on the fence. I could see kids, people, animals, and animal habitats. That is my favorite moment of going to Potter Park Zoo for a week. That is also how I felt at that moment.

A Walk In The Woods -- 10-21-08

I would feel very scared if I saw people. I would run as fast as I could and as far as I could then I would keep looking back to see if they were following me where ever I went or just following me a little. Or maybe just stay there. I would be thinking what are they doing, ohhh my gosh they have a gun! Okay, just stay just stay clam and don't let them point the gun at me. HIDE! Just find a big fat tree and hide behind it, wait for them to walk away, and then go the other way. Or maybe just walk away and while your walking make scary noises and hide behind trees. You know what just run! WAIT, then he might shoot me becase he thinks i'm going to attack him. Few, he can't see me any more but maybe I still might want get out of here fast without getting seen he could still shoot me. I'm not sure if I'm the only big foot alive and there are still alot of people I want to scare so I better not get killed. Just walk away slowly. AHHHHHHHHHHH! He saw me again wait a minute, that's not a gun it's a stick. What was I worried about? Maybe, I should get my eyes checked.
