Rabies And Road Kill -- 05-26-09

Since 1994 we have been recording the Rye and New Castle, New Hampshire Road kill. This year I chose to figure out if rabies had an effect on road kill specifically on fox and raccoons To figure this out I had to make a graph on the data we have collected in the past 16 years on raccoons and fox. Then I had to look for significant drops in the amount of road kill. You would think you would look for significant high amounts of road kill in that species but if there infected with rabies they will more likely die in the woods.

The results I found where shocking. In 1994 until 1997 the fox and squirrel road kill amounts where 0 and that means that both of them had rabies until raccoon had a sudden boom in road kill in 1998 and fox went up one and then fell right bock down just as the raccoon did in 2000. Then in 2003 the raccoon went all the way back up and to fall again in 2005.

In this project I expected more fox to die then raccoons. There could have been some errors like the identification of the animal or why the animal crossed the street. Maybe we didn’t check every single street in Rye and New Castle.

Next year maybe we should assign streets to students to check every two days or shifts with other students every day to check for road kill and examine it. And they should be a little more specific on the location and the surroundings on the wear about of the remains of the road kill.

In the data I collected about fox and raccoon road kill I put it into a graph. What I am trying to do is figure out what species and what year animals where effected with Rabies. In this case fox Raccoon. I needed to use a line graph instead of a stacked line graph because the stacked line graph put the same data as the raccoon as the fox. I chose a line graph over a bar graph because the line graph is made to show something over time and the bar graph is for collecting data not over time but one day or moment and same category.

MY seed packet -- 04-23-09

Our class read Seed Folks in our English class by Paul Fleischman. This book is about a community garden in Cleveland, Ohio and everyone is drawn together by friendship. After we read this book we had to take a character from the book and someone from our life and design and make a seed packet and it had to include a picture, title, a quote from that person, and directions based on their life for planting. For example: I did my dad and Sae Young for my seed packets. For both of them I did hot peppers. For my dad’s quote I said “Have you ever been to the zoo?” and for Sae Young I did “afraid of everything, all the time.”

In class we are learning about acid rain. We made place mats about the causes, the pollutants, process, effects, and the solutions. I know it’s a little messy but I did it in a rush. Pollutants come from our power plants and exhaust from our cars. The Pollutants then rise up into our atmosphere and mix with moister and clouds. Some pollutants can travel up to 1500 miles. Others can only go up to 300 miles. When it rains acid rains kills plants and animals and eats away at our cars.

We where told to take the ten thousand dollars and invest in three shares. I picked three different shares. The first one I picked was Pain therapeutics. I picked this one because I thought the research in America was making more meds to fight off pains. The other share was SMF Energy corp. SMF is a green energy product producer. The third one was called nutrition21. I thought this investment would be good because the history behind this stock was a high daily value average.

Inner Planets -- 09-29-08

Mercury is the first planet from the sun which is 36 million miles. It is .39 astronomical units from the sun. A one astronomical unit is the distance between the Sun and Earth. Mercury is 3031 miles in diameter. It is named after the god of travel. Mercury is all rock and was known about first in 3000 BC. One day on mercury is 59 days on earth and one year is 88 days on earth. In the day it gets to 800 degrees Fahrenheit, and at night it gets to negative 350 degrees Fahrenheit. This is because Mercury has no atmosphere. Venus is the second planet from the Sun. it is 67 million miles from the sun or .72 A.U. (astronomical unit). It is 7521 miles in diameter. One day on Venus is 243 earth days and its year is 224 earth days so Venus’s day is longer than its year so it rotates very slowly. It has one moon; the average high is 891 degrees Fahrenheit and the low 837 degrees Fahrenheit. Venus is considered Earths twin.
