Roadkill Analysis -- 05-29-09

For my roadkill project I studied speed limit within New Castle and Rye. I predicted that in New Castle Wild Rose Lane would have the most roadkill. The reason why is because a lot of people go to Fort Stark, an old fort located off of Wild Rose Lane. The main reason is because a lot of drinking goes on in there so a lot of crazy driving takes place. In Rye, I thought that the street with the most roadkill would be Washington Road. The reason why is because the school is on that road. If people are late to school, their parents will probably go a little over the speed limit. It’s also a route to the beach so people in the summer want to rush to the beach.

I was actually wrong about one of my predictions. On my New Castle graph, the street with the most roadkill was Portsmouth Av. On the Rye graph the street with the most roadkill was Sagamore and Wallis. One of the reasons I think why Sagamore had the most roadkill is because there is a vet on it and maybe sometimes some of the animals get loose and run out into the road. Sagamore is also one of the ways to the junior high school. I think the reason why Wallis had the most roadkill is because there is a beach located on it.

When I looked at the information I did not expect Sagamore to have the most roadkill for Rye. Washington would be the most obvious street with the most roadkill because that street leads to the Junior High school. I also did not expect Portsmouth Av. to have the most roadkill in New Castle. Wild Rose Lane I think would because of all the drivers that go down there to see the fort.

What I would predict for next year for what streets have the most roadkill is Wild Rose Lane for New Castle and Washington Road in Rye. I would pick the same ones I predicted in my hypothesis. I don’t think that I would pick Washington Road for rye or Portsmouth Av. for New Castle.

Roadkill -- 05-08-09

What I noticed on the graph is that the highest roadkill is gray squirrels. The number of gray squirrels killed was 21. That is probably because they always run out on roads and cars never see them because they are so small. The lowest roadkill with 1 as the number is the mink, red squirrel, mouse, and deer.

Earth Day -- 05-07-09

Earth day took place at the Rye Jr High School on Wednesday, April 22, 2009. Me and two other people did a power point together and it was about the different types of pollution. My focus was world pollution prevention, bhsa's topic was water pollution, and mhry's topic was pollution in your own backyard. I thought are presention was pretty good and I hope it encouraged other people not to pollut. Earth Day should be every day!

In my class, all of the students read the book Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman. It was a great book about how different people of very different backgrounds can work together to make a vacant lot a beautiful garden filled with fruits, vegetables, and plants. The book took us about three days to read and when we were done reading it we did a very fun project.

The project was to create two seed packets. One of the seed packets we made had to tie a person in are life to a plant. I compared my mother to a moon flower because a moon flower is the brightest of all the flowers and my mom’s personality is happy and bright. In the other seed packet we had to tie a person in our book Seedfolks to a plant. The character I choose was Curtis and I compared him to a tomato. The reason why is because he planted tomatoes in the public garden because he knew his ex girlfriend loved them and he wanted to try to win back her heart

Antarctica Flag -- 03-04-09

The flag I did for Antarctica mainly focuses on what Global Warming can do. I drew Antarctica cracking because if Global Warming get’s very bad, Antarctica could start to melt. I drew a penguin because that is an animal that lives in Antarctica. I only drew one penguin because penguins could start to become extinct with Global Warming. He is saying “Not my fault it’s melting,” meaning that Global Warming is doing the job and not one penguin. The last thing I drew was the sun. The reason why is because with Global Warming, a lot of different places will get a lot hotter. That is the flag I made for Antarctica and I hope you learn from it and like it!

What to Do With $10,000 -- 03-03-09

What do you do when you get handed 10,000 dollars? You invest in the stock market! All of the 7th grade students in math were given a pretend 10,000 dollars. Then they got to pick three stocks to invest in on yahoofinance.com. The three stocks I invested in were Starbucks, Walt Disney, and Nike. The reason I invested in Starbucks was because I love going to Starbucks and getting a chai tea soy latte. I thought it would interesting to know how well they are doing in the stock market because I know a lot of people love to go to Starbucks. I choose to invest in Walt Disney because I love all of the Walt Disney movies and Disney World is one of my favorite places to go to. The reason I invested in Nike was because Nike has Nike Dunks which are sneakers and those are my favorite sneakers. I also love Nike swim caps and goggles. When I invested in these I thought they were going to be really good stocks and keep going up and not go down. But, I was wrong.
If I could change things about what I did when I picked my companies to invest in, I would definitely change some things. The first thing I would change is I would pick something different then Walt Disney because Walt Disney didn’t do that well. I would pick Google instead because Google did really well. Another change I would make would be I would only want to invest in two stocks. The reason why is because you could focus better on just two and take more time on each of them. Those are two things that I would change about my stock companies.
If people wanted to invest in the stock market I would give them some advice that would help them. The first thing I would tell them would to make good choices of who you invest in. That way they make money and not lose a lot. Another thing is to always look at the historical prices. That way you can see if your company has lost or gained money in the past I would also tell people to invest in large companies. The reason why is because if you invest in really small companies you could easily lose money. 10,000 dollars, investing in stocks… could math class get any better!

This picture is a still life of objects placed on a table. This was a very fun art project I did because we got to use glue to make it really pop out and look creative. The poka dots on the drawing also have glue with pastel over it. I hope you enjoy looking at my still life!

Joe Flood -- 12-05-08

Joe Flood is a man that came into are school and talked about drugs. The reason why he did this was because when he was younger he made some bad choices. He smoked, drank, and did drugs. But, the great thing about Joe is that he knows the mistakes he has made and he has changed his ways.

My first impression of Joe was that he was a very confident man. He was able to stand in front of are class and talk about the choices he made when he was younger. That takes a lot of courage. My second impression of him was that he was a very smart man. He talked a lot about choices all of us are soon going to make that will or will not change are lives. Joe also talked about what to say if someone offers you a drug. I have learned a lot about making choices with Joe Flood here at my school.

I am so glad that Joe came to my school and shared what he knows about drugs and how to prevent them from ruining your life. He is a wonderful and very nice man to talk to if you are having problems with drugs. I really hope he comes in again and talks with us! Thanks Joe!

Antarctica Penguins -- 11-21-08

I think that the most interesting journal entry that Ms. Elwood wrote was November 13, 2008. It was about her going to Cape Royds Adelie penguin colony. When she went there she saw penguins building nests, (which they make out of pebbles), mating, sitting on eggs, flapping their wings to mark their territory, and the last thing she saw that they were doing that she thought was funny was yacking up a storm! The other thing that she wrote about on November 13, 2008 was that before she saw the penguins she saw where Earnest Shackleton departed from in order for him to explore the inner reaches of Antarctica. Shackleton was also the first to climb Mt. Erebus. She thought that it was very interesting to see all that. The reason I wrote about those two events is because it sounded like she had a lot of fun doing those two things. They were also very interesting. I think that one thing that I would like to ask Ms. Elwood is that why she doesn’t get a permit. I know that if she got a permit, then she could touch the animals or help guide them if they were lost somewhere. I also think that would be a really cool thing for her to write about in her journals.

Picture taken by Ms. Ellwood from her online journal

Dr. David Ainley makes some careful notes about his precious colony!
