Roadkill Analysis -- 05-29-09

This graph is about how different roads have different numbers of road kill. This graphs shows that sagamore road has the most amount of road kill out of all of the listed roads. As you can see from the graph sagamore road has the highest kill count out of all of the roads. You can also see that a lot of roads only have a few deaths. This graph is based on 3 years including 2009, 2008, and 2007 as shown on the right of the graph. This graph is based on 2 towns; Rye and New Castle.

Sagamore road is one big road. It goes through half of rye and into some of portsmouth which is the next town over. Washington road is also a big road because it stretches through the other half of Rye. This road also reaches a small part of portsmouth . These roads also have a high kill count because on both sides of each of the roads has woods, which are clearly animal habitats. There are also many little water bodies through out Rye and New Castle considering New Castle and Rye are right next to the beach. This effects the kill count because animals need water to live, and sometime they need water considering its the animals habitat.

Roadkill is an unpredictable thing because you never know when an animal is going to cross a road. One thing to keep in mind is just to anticipate an animal crossing. Just keep those headlights on and try to swirve around them. Once you cause roadkill you can never change it back.

This is a graph about how the number or roadkill in Rye and New Castle varies from 13 a month to about 1 or 2. This is interesting data to look into because you can see how many animals are killed each month in your town.

We participate in this every year, and is always fun gettin ready. First we each get to pick a topic that envolves the environment. For example i did a short powerpoint on photosynthesis and how it works. It was quite basic but other people did reducing reusing and recycling, and other people did how acid rain effects a variety of different things. Sadly i had to leave early for vacation and i had to miss out on this fun experience. I was in a group of three and we asked a question, who invented earthday and why was it on that specific day; April 22. This was a very fun and enjoyable experience and i hope some of you people out there will participate in this activity next year.

Seedfolks

It was about how different people around the world plant different plants. It was very interesting because in the book the garden starts out as pretty much a junkyard. The people that lived in the town were inspired by one another to go to the garden, help clean up the place, and then they each got their own place in the garden.

The project we did was to make a seed packet on one of the characters in the book. I picked Sae Young because she seems very quiet, and was just the best part of the book to read. I though this because she talked in a different way. We were to come up with a plant that best describes the character we chose. I chose a hot chili pepper for Sae Young because whenever she was somewhere she was always moving. She was also very shy because she was of course foreign, and she didn’t know many of the people that lived around her. We were also supposed to make directions for the seed packet that show the characters qualities.

I made 2 seed packets, and one of them was for a character in the book, and the other was a choice (someone in your life, ect.) so I picked my puppy. He is a yellow/golden Labrador. I also chose a hot chili pepper to best describe him, because he is always moving, he is always jumping up and down, and he is very quick.

Stock Market -- 03-04-09

The Stock Market

The stock market is a very tricky set of numbers. It consists of prices from 100,000 dollars to penny stocks. It is very tricky because you never know if it will be a good day or a bad day for the DOW Jones industrial average. The prices depend on how the company is going. I happened to pick 4 companies to invest in and they were Chevron Corp (CVX), Exxon Mobile (XOM), McDonalds (MCD), and lastly Coca Cola (KO).

The stocks I did were very interesting because every time I went online to check them I noticed that almost the whole time the stocks were either up or down they never stayed the same. There were some things I wanted to change though. I would’ve liked to change maybe chevron corp.(CVX) to apple because apple actually went up instead of going down. I also would’ve liked to get rid of Exxon mobile (XOM) too because each stock lost about 8 dollars and I bought a lot of Exxon mobile stocks (XOM). Some advice I would like to give to some stock buyers is that you should aim for lower priced stocks because say if you bought a stock for about 1 cent and you bought 1000 of those stocks you would make a lot because usually if you buy a lower priced stock or even a penny stock you would be able to buy great quantities of that specific stock. Another piece of advice I would like to give is that it is very tricky to pick a good stock because you never know if the price of the stock is going to higher or lower.

The stock market is a great way to make money but the stock market is also a great way to lose money. So even though the price of a stock is very high, it doesn’t mean its doing well. Like I said the stock market is a very tricky set of numbers and wish everybody great luck in the stock market world.

Shells -- 02-02-09

In this picture we were demonstrationg how shells would like like if you threw it out into space like a boomerang. This was really fun because when we did this you really had to think about how the different angles of the shell would make it look like a boomerang. Mine does not really look like a boomerang because there were two choices, you would either make it look like you threw the shell like a boomerang or you could make it like the shells were floating in space. The part that made you think the most was that you could only make the shell at the same angle once. This was a very fun activity, and a recommend trying it.

Antarctica-penguins -- 11-21-08

Ms. Ellwood in Antarctica The journal that most interested me was when the adelie penguin was in their camp. They were doing oxygen tests in the dry valleys lakes. This interested me because penguins are not supposed to be in the dry valleys considering there is no food for them to east, or no fresh water to drink. There is no water to drink because all of the lakes in the dry valleys are rock solid ice up to 10 feet thick. They were quite surprised because this penguin was most likely to wander off from the original pack, and eventually was going to die. Penguins will usually eat minnows which are very very small, but the penguins can eat a lot more than just one. This was the most interesting journal entry to me because it talks about animal life, and teaches you a little about where they are supposed to be, where they are not supposed to be, what they eat, and finally what they drink. This journal entry also interested me because a lot of kids like me like penguins, and how they react to a human. For example, this penguin or any other penguin would not run away from a human or land animal because they know that all of their predators live in the water. This journal entry is the most interesting and enjoyable, and I hope you the viewers will read some of Ms. Ellwood’s journals straight from Antarctica! Thank you and I hope you visit her webpage at www.polartrec.org!

Inner Planets -- 09-26-08

Mercury is now the smallest planet. Pluto was considered to small to be a planet, so in this case is not a planet. Mercury is 36 million miles from the sun. The size of Mercury is a little over 3000 miles, specifically 3031 miles. It is a rock planet, and is made up of a solid iron core. Compared to our 364 days a year, Mercury is an amazing 88 days. The high and low temperatures vary from 891F to a low -350F.
Venus is the second planet from the sun, and is also called earths twin. It is called the earths twin because of its size, and circumference which are merely the same. Venus is 67 million miles away from the sun, and is an amazing 7521 miles in circumference. The length of day is about ½ of a year for us, and is 243 days. Venus’s revolution is actually faster than is rotation, at 224 days. Venus has deadly gases and compact its atmosphere to a thick wall of gas. If anyone tries to penetrate this wall, they would immediately get crushed from Venus’s High pressure. Venus is actually hotter than Mercury because its gassy atmosphere holds all of its heat in. Venus's high temperature is 891F and its low is 837.
