How Weather Effects Roadkill -- 06-01-09

I chose to study how the weather affects roadkill. I think that warm weather will make more roadkill and that cooler weather will make less roadkill. Also warm weather can make more roadkill because it could make berries and nuts fall in the road, which would attract animals. More people would be out driving on a warm day, they could be on their way to a beach or a park. The more people on the road means more roadkill.

My prediction was right. On warm days there were 18 animals killed and on cooler days there was 16 animals killed. Also on cooler days there was 11 animals not killed and on the warmer days there was 5 animals not killed. It show that on the cooler days there was a lot less roadkill than on the warm days.

There were probably other things other than warm weather that affected the roadkill. The warm weather could have caused berries and nuts to fall in the road. I wish there was a way for me to record the animals that died because of eating something in the road.

Next year I would want to predict the weather again. That way I could come back to this year’s data and compare them. I would like to find out if anyone recorded how weather affected roadkill in the previous years.

Roadkill 09 -- 05-08-09

Our school is learning about the roadkill in Rye and Newcastle! For the last 8 weeks we have been recording the roadkill that we found. As you can see on the graph below the Gray Squirrels have been hit alot more than any of the other animals. Deers, raccoons, red squirrels, minks and mice have only been found once as roadkill. I think that Gray Squirrels have been hit the most because they can live very close to the road and if their is a tree dropping nuts or berries in the road the squirrels will want to get them.

In class we read the book Seedfolks, it is written by Paul Fleischman. It is about a vacant lot that is filled with trash and old furniture that later on turns into a beautiful community garden filled with fruits, vegetables and flowers. The book contains thirteen different and interesting characters that become the closest friends. After we read the book we made projects. We had to pick a character from the book and relate them to a certain plant, then we made seed packets of that person as a plant. Also we had to choose someone from our life and connect them to a plant.

Tio Juan is who I chose as a character from the book. He speaks an Indian language and no one can understand him. He finds himself drawn to the garden and decides to plant Sweet Peppers. My second seed packet is Picasso, my cat. I related him to a Venus fly trap because he loves hunting and catching bugs and other animals. This was a fun project that I would love to do again!

Antarctica Flag -- 03-03-09

<span style="font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"">I would want this to be the Antarctica flag because it represents Antarctica’s figure, the animals that live there and it shows the different countries that share the continent. In the top right is a killer whale which represents the many of the whales that live there in the cold icy waters. In the bottom right there is a weddel seal to represent many of them that live there. In the top left there is a penguin representing the six different types of penguins that live in Antarctica. And lastly in the bottom left is a fish to show the catch and release study program with the many fish. I think that this drawing shows a lot of information about Antarctica just by looking at it and I think it would be make a good flag.

Stock Market Report -- 03-03-09

             Ellie’s Stock Market

What would you do if someone handed you 10,000 dollars? Well if you were a 7th grade student in Mrs. Hearte’s math class you would buy stocks! I chose to invest Walt Disney because I love Disney World and their movies. I also chose to invest in McDonald’s because if the economy isn’t doing so great people would want to spend the smallest amount of money as possible and McDonalds is cheap. The last stock I chose to do is Verizon Communications because my cell phone is Verizon. Verizon is popular so a lot of people would have it.
If I could change or pick a new stock to invest in I probably would. I wouldn’t have chosen to invest in Walt Disney or Verizon because I didn’t make any money I actually lost some. I lost 510.51 dollars from Walt Disney and I lost 115.90 dollars from Verizon. If I could pick another stock I would have invested in Google because it made 750.00 dollars with only 16 shares! I should have taken more time to choose my stocks.
Some advice to people who are interested in investing in the stock market is that don’t choose a risky stock. If it’s a company you really like but seems to have its ups and downs don’t invest in it! Investing in a steady stock is a better idea. If you invest in a stock that is good and doesn’t seem to be going down then that’s probably a good choice. Some other advice is to not choose a low stock. Even if you think it will come back up that could be a very risky move. Spending 10000 dollars in the stock market was a lot of fun!!

Snow Day -- 02-03-09

I chose to do snow for my weather because I wanted to do splatter paint and also it's winter! Snow is light and happy and I thought it would be easy to express. I thought a clear blue backround and white fluffy snow ould look great and give off a snow day feeling.

The white splatter paint gives the affect of snow falling from the sky. I cut out paper snowflakes and printed out snow landscapes. Also tissue paper looks like snow. I used silver glitter also to make the poster brighter.

Joe Flood -- 12-08-08

Joe Flood came to our school to talk to us about what alcohol and drugs can do to you. He said that if you try or do alcohol and drugs your brain will crave it and want more. Joe gave us homework where we have to take our favorite thing to eat or drink, take a bite or sip of it then put it down, and try to go over an hour with out having anymore.
I used iced tea because it is my favorite thing to drink. I took one sip while watching Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and it was so hard to not have another sip. My brain was craving it so badly. I think I went about ten minuets before having more. It didn’t help with the movie I was watching because the chocolate waterfall looked like iced tea. After I finished off the glass I went to get more. It was so hard for the ten minute that I went. My brain wouldn’t let me go a minute more.
It was fun listening to Joe and I learned a lot. My favorite thing that Joe talked about was the six lights that control your brain when you drink alcohol. The first light is thinking. The second light is motor skills. The third light is safety nerd. The fourth light is pass out. The fifth light is over dose. And finally the sixth light is dead. Joe Flood knows a lot on how to keep yourself safe and I am glad I got to listen to him speak!

Ms. Ellwood -- 12-08-08

Ms. Ellwood has been in Antarctica since October, but on November 13 she got to see an Adelie penguin colony! She went with her friend Jean Pennycook (who works with the Adelie Penguin Project) to Cape Royds Penguin Colony. Ms. Ellwood got to watch the Adelie penguins make nests out of pebbles, flapping their wings to mark territory and sitting on eggs. She says that it was very fascinating and could have watched for days. Before she went to the colony Ms. Ellwood visited the cape Royds Hut. That was where Earnest Shackleton left from in order to be the first to climb Mt. Erebus. Ms. Ellwood thought that the day couldn’t get any better but on the way back to McMurdo they stopped at an ice cave! Ms. Ellwood sure had a fun day. When Ms. Ellwood returns I would love to find out if she ever would want to study penguins instead of ice. After seeing the penguin colony it would be inspiring to research them. If Ms. Ellwood did want to study penguins which type would she study and why?

The closest planet to the sun is Mercury and the second one is Venus, they are the inner planets. Mercury is the second smallest planet with cliffs as high as 3km. Mercury has no atmosphere. With Mercury’s lack of atmosphere and having it be so close to the sun, the planet’s surface temperature can be as high as 800 Degrees f and as low as -350 Degrees f. Venus is known as Earths Twin because they are very close in size. The high temperature of Venus is 891 degrees f. and the low temperature is 837 degrees f. Venus is 67 million miles from the sun when Mercury is only 36 million miles.
