The bell that rings in the morning at the New York Stock Exchange signifies the beginning of trading every single day at the New York Stock Exchange. Meaning that you can now begin trading stocks.
Saint Philomena -- 12-13-12

I knew someone who led a very important role in my life and still does, though she is not here with me today. Her name was Philomena, Princess of Corfu, Greece. We met at Sunday session at Church when we were around the age of nine or ten. I remember her sad story in a very special way. It started in the year 304 in Corfu, Greece. Philomena and I were neighbors and best friends. One night when I was over at her house her father had received a note from the Emperor Diocletian, threatening to bring war on Corfu. The only way to stop his threats was to go to Rome, Italy and negotiate peace. The next morning was Sunday and we went to church. Philomena and her family were not there. When I got home I went to her house and knocked on the door. Their maid then told me that Philomena’s family was obligated to go to Rome, Italy to see the Emperor Diocletian.

I had been very frightened for my dear friend because I did not see the need for Philomena to go with her father and mother to Rome to see the Emperor Diocletian. When I returned home, I asked my parents if I would be able to write letters to Philomena. They said I could not write letters to Philomena because if the letters were discovered, Diocletian could have us or Philomena’s family killed. I never did write her a letter, but I missed her terribly. We found out later , Philomena and her family arrived in the capital and proceeded directly to Emperor Diocletian’s castle.

As soon as they walked into the castle Diocletian had his eyes fixed upon Philomena. He was enthralled by her beauty and wanted to marry her; she refused and told him and her parents that she had vowed her virginity to the Lord, Our God, when she was a young girl of 13 at the Greek Orthodox Church during Sunday session with the priest. After days of her refusal Diocletian threw a fit of fury and had her chained in the dungeon.

Philomena kept refusing all of Diocletian offers and so Diocletian ordered for Philomena to be thrown into a river with an anchor tied to her neck. Philomena was faithful to God and he sent two angles to save her; they cut the rope and brought her to shore. The next day Philomena refused his offer and he had ordered her to be killed by arrows, but she was saved by the two angels again. Finally, on the third day, Philomena refused his final offer, and he ordered her to be beheaded. Philomena died on August 10, 304 in Rome, Italy at the age of 13.

Philomena’s faith in God shows us that we should never give up on God and always have faith in him no matter how bad the situation. My family and I honor my friend, Philomena in a day of feasting on every August 11. Although I never got to see her again, I still remember her in this prayer as I may one day be crowned in heaven with thee someday as well.

“So, that wearing thy holy cord and imitating thee in this life,

I may one day be crowned with thee in heaven.

Amen.

SuperSize Me Documentary -- 06-01-12

In health class at my school we have been learning about nutrition and to kind of get a visual aid, we watched a video on Youtube called "SuperSize Me" which takes place in New York City, New York at his home, doctor’s offices and McDonald’s around the United States. The video was a documentary put together by a man named Morgan that decided to eat McDonald’s for 30 days straight for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Morgan who was running the documentary had a great, healthy diet to start and was about 150 pounds. On about the 20th day he had gone to see an Exercise Physiologist and had found out that he was now wagering about 200 pounds. Morgan is not used to all of this type of fast food because his girlfriend is a vegan chef so he is more used to eating things with low dairy counts and not a lot of meat.

Before Morgan could start this challenge of eating McDonald’s for 30 days straight. He visited 3 specialists to see if he was healthy enough to start. During the first 2-3 weeks of this diet Morgan was throwing up and having stomach pains etc., during the last couple weeks; he started feeling out of breath too. He learned that although McDonald’s may seem delicious and so much fun to go there to get the toys and to play in the jungle gym, the food is very bad for you with high sodium and sugar levels. The labels may say with real potatoes or with no sugar added or real fruit, people should ask for the nutrition table to see if those things are all true. "SuperSize Me" may seem like a gross and disgusting video about a person who has no life, but to most people who are watching it they are learning that products at the McDonald’s are not what they are cut out to be. The only exercise that Morgan is getting is walking to and from each McDonald’s and then walking up the steps to his apartment. Morgan may have seemed healthy, but when he went to the specialists, the numbers he received for his cholesterol and other things.

I learned that each person that goes to McDonald’s should only be going there about once or twice a year and exercising afterwards and they should keep exercising daily if they want to be physically fit. Below are the equations that we talked about during our health class, they tell you how much weight is lost or gained and the calories burned. <span style="font-size:9.0pt;
font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"">I was personally affected by this documentary because I don’t normally go to McDonald’s and it was interesting to see that by this video all of the things that I learned from this video I didn’t realize that McDonald’s could be that bad for you. I rarely go to McDonald’s and I now don’t really want to go after seeing that documentary in health class.

<span style="font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"">*Maintain weight: calories eaten = calories burned

This project was assigned by our social studies teacher and was a great learning experience for all of the students. I especially liked doing this project because I got to discover things about Poland that I never knew. This project took a lot of work but in the long run of things I think the whole class enjoyed working on a country that they knew little about. It taught all of us a bit of creativity, to learn things our way, and mostly how to research things and how to write. I hope our teacher does another project like this again sometime soon!

The Millennium Development Goals -- 10-19-11

The Millennium Development Goals were started in 2000. 189 Nations made a promise to free people from extreme poverty, hunger and diseases. This pledge became known as the 8 Millennium Development Goals. These Goals are to be achieved by 2015. If every country joins in we can all make a difference. If you want more information about these goals click here! Please take the time to read this and the articles attached. People need to know about these things, and you can help by reading this blog and telling other people to read it too.

Here are the8 Millennium Development Goals:

Water: To create sanitary water to the countries needed.

Hunger: To make sure that all children and adults get food. To make sure that people are not malnourished in any country.

Child Survival: To make sure that all children will survive. Did you know that 153 million children are below their ideal weight?

Child Labor: Annually 500 thousand women die when giving birth or during their pregnancy. In Africa's Sub-Saharan region 1 in 6 women die in these conditions.

Education: 115 million children are NOT enrolled in school.

Women's Rights: 64% of the Wolrd's illiterate population is women. 60% of children NOT enrolled in primary school are girls/women.

Displacement: 80% of the world's refugee population is women.

HIV and AIDS/Diseases: Every year 10 million children die of preventable diseases. In the year 2000, 22 million people died of AIDS.

There was progress in Malawi! Malawi achieved a 53% food surplus in 2007. Going from a 43% food surplus in 2005. That is a 10% difference to the people living in Malawi! The people in Malawi really appreciate all of the people that helped them to get food. I hope you will take the time to help people, not only in Malawi but the people in many other countries. People can say that they "helped" but in reality... The question is will you take the time to read this blog, read the articles that are attached, and help someone who is willing to help you if it were you in this type of situation?

Will You?

Waiting to go to Cheering -- 09-29-10

Hello it is me again, I am waiting for my friend to come pick me up. We just got our team shirts and my name is on the back of it. The shirt is blue and red and white. I, don't think those colors look good together do you...? The colors on our uniform are blue, silver, and white. My parents are outside because my dad's car battery I think died... I think? Anyway, beside the commotion I was going to tell you that our school colors are blue and white so easy to remember. I was on a website to practice your mathematic skills. You earn $ at school because we have a fake checkbook project... sounds fun right! Well I have to go... BLOG YOU LATER!!!

My Sixth Grade Goals -- 09-21-10

My goals for sixth grade are... I endeavor to get straight A's all year. My first test scores were really bad. I am trying to improve on a lot this year... like do well on my Iowa tests. I also would like to get good grades in my weakest subjects. I am also going to work on being a better blogger. I would like to become a better student by getting to know some of the new kids and become a better listener in class. I want to accomplish the mile run because I am not a good runner at all. I plan on doing well in the Blogger's Challenge.
