In the Toronto Public Libraries some popular teen reads include Twilight Series, The Harry Potter Books and the Eragon Series.
To find popular books in London, I could not find a library online that had a list of popular books, so I went to www.amazon.co.uk and found a list of teen books that were bestsellers, I found the "Harry Potter series", "Noughts and Crosses", by Malorie Blackman, "Chicken Soup For The Teenage Soul", "Ella Enchanted", by Gail Carson Levine, "Where The Red Ferns Grow", by Wilson Rawls, and "Crown Duel", by Sherwood Smith.
From the New York Public Library they had a list of bestsellers for young adults some include "The Host", by Stephenie Meyer, "The Last Child", by John Hart, "Wicked Prey" by John Standford
In Sydney Australia I chose a library called The Surry Hills Library, popular books are "Hell has A Harbour Views", by Richard Beasely, "The Timeless Land", by Eleanor Dark, Puberty Blues, by Kathy Lette, "Poor Mans Orange", by Ruth Park
Vancouver Public Library some popular teen titles include "Artemis Fowl" by Eoin Colfer, "Alice, I Think" by Susan Juby, "The Princess Diaries" by Meg Cabot, and "Saffy's Angel" by Hilary Mckay.
These teen reads some are familiar to me and others are not. It is quite interesting what is popular in different places.

Ipperwash and Caledonia Compared To Oka -- 05-04-09

There have been land disputes over the years in Canadian history, between the aboriginals and the settlers. There are three in particular to compare, Ipperwash, Caledonia and the Oka crisis. These crisis's have happened not so long ago. This shows that nothing has really changed. Has anything been resolved in any of these situations?

Ipperwash was a land dispute which happened on September 4, 1995, at Ontario's Provincial Park called Ipperwash. Stoney Point Ojibway band was a group of natives who basically took control of the park in order to claim their land. Their reserve was taken by Ottawa in the year 1942 for military training. 53 years later the group of Stoney Point natives took over the park. The natives wanted to protest peacefully to get their land claim. But the police just started firing at the unarmed natives and running into the park. An OPP sniper, Kenneth Deane, took down one native named Dudley George. The government takes full responsibility for his death. Dudley George's family put a law suit against Mike Harris the former Ontario Premier The 56 hectares of land got returned to the Stoney Point First Nations in 2007. The Caledonia crisis took place in Caledonia, Ontario in the year of 2006. The residents of the Six Nations reserve protested and took over a construction site. The Caledonia crisis is being called one of the longest land disputes. The dispute is still continuing now.

The Oka crisis was a land dispute between the Canadian government and the Mohawk natives. This dispute took place in Oka, Quebec on July 11 1990 and ended September 26, 1990. The dispute was about the Oka golf course wanted to expand it's 9 hole course to an 18 hole. The Mohawk natives protested setting up barricades around their reserve, the army got called in by the mayor, the army set up barb wire around the perimeter. The Mohawk women have a rule do not fire until fired upon. Somehow guns got fired but it was unclear who shot first. There were three deaths. 1 direct and 2 indirect. One of the deaths was officer Marcel Lemay. The Mohawks got food delivered but it came damaged, most likely from the army. The army also cut their phone lines so that they could only call the army for negotiations. A women who was a Mohawk native who worked in the Canadian government got fired. The people of Oka were tired of their protest and were burning effigees. This crisis lasted 78 days, until the Mohawks came out from the perimeter, they were beaten and most were arrested. But the golf course did not get built.

Ipperwash is different to Oka because in Oka the people were going to build something on their land, where as i n Ipperwash they were taking a park back. Caledonia is similar to Oka because in both of the disputes the people were developing on their land. In Oka and Ipperwash people have died but in Caledonia there are no deaths. Caledonia dispute is still happening but Ipperwash and Oka have already ended. All three disputes have been over land.

These land disputes are very similar with minor differences. Will these disputes ever really end? If they're so similar, nothing has really changed. In a way history keeps on repeating itself. One land dispute is still happening. In the end will the natives ever have their own land? Or will they have to blend with the rest of society? These land disputes nothing has been resolved. Will there ever be a solution?

Oka In Perspective -- 04-24-09

I were a Mohawk native in the Oka crisis, I completely agree with the Mohawk nation that they should have their land. But no one has shown what it was like in the army, or officers perspective. What would it have been like for them during this situation?

Today is September 26 1990, we are back by the barricades by the Oka golf course. Perhaps today the Mohawks will finally give in. Do they think we will give in after they killed our fellow officer, Marcel Lemay? I don't think so. There is so much pressure from the Mayor of Quebec and the citizens of Oka. The citizens are all furious about this crisis. Everyone has lost their patience, today is the 78th day since they made the barricades. There always seems something strange going on, on the other side of the barb wire. Sometimes a goof also known as Lasagna yells and curses at us. Other Mohawks come to the front of the wire to recieve their food and money. One of the officers usually damages the food. It serves them right too. Why should they get free food and money? The don't do anything on their reserve. I, I risk my life everyday to make money. This needs to end, we need that land.

Later that night...

The Mohawk flag has been taken down, every officer watches in awe. Were they surrendering? We see the line of Mohawks coming over the hill from the forest. The were coming closer and closer. They reached the barb wire. We stared. They did not stop, they axed the wire and stepped over. This was no surrender.
"Capture them!" an officer yelled. Every officer rushed at them, arresting them. Some women fell on the barb wire. This crisis was going to end...now.

Diamonds Should Not Be A Girls Best Friend -- 04-20-09

Diamonds are known to be a girls best friend, but I think that if everyone knew about conflict diamonds, they would not buy them. I never really liked diamonds, they seemed really boring and plain. Now I have learned about conflict diamonds and how they get into jeweler stores. I realized that there are more reasons to not buy diamonds besides that they're plain.

Some diamonds come from countries in Africa like Sierra Leone. Rebel groups such as the R.U.F which stands for Revolutionary United Front, invade villages making the people fear them by taking young men or boys to become child soldiers. They also kill or cause a lot of harm to the other people in the village. The R.U.F kidnaps not only the young men but the older strong ones. They take the older men to rivers to find diamonds, they use alluvial mining which is also known as panning. The R.U.F use the child soldiers to force more people to mine in the rivers. Most diamonds go through the Kimberley process but some get smuggled out and mixed with the conflict free ones making it impossible to trace back to where the diamonds came from. The diamond companies such as DeBeers buy all the diamonds they can find in order to stabilize the market. Stabilizing the market means they keep all the diamonds in storage so that they can put out the illusion that diamonds are rare. If diamonds are rare they can make the prices much higher. So diamonds are actually pretty common in Africa, it is just the illusion that the companies put out in the world. DeBeers goals are to convince people that diamonds are rare, they mean so much when you give it to someone, and a man must spend at least a months salary on an engagement ring with a diamond. DeBeers also got celebrities to wear their diamonds, this shows people that if you wear diamonds it shows you are wealthy and famous. The slogan for the DeBeers company is "A Diamond is Forever".

Why do women want diamonds? The diamond companies feed people with propaganda, making them think that a diamond is important. People still buy diamonds with certificates saying they're conflict free. Unfortunately there is no way to tell because some certificates have been forged, so there is no way to tell if your diamond is 100% conflict free. Diamonds are just a shiny rock, it is not worth a lot of money, but it could be worth someones life. This is why I think a diamond should not be a girls best friend.

Comparing Chanda's Secrets to Blood Diamond -- 04-13-09

In comparing Chanda's Secrets to Blood Diamond, there are some obvious differences and similarities. But when you look deep into the story you notice a few things that have similarities. Chanda's Secrets is a book by Allan Stratton and Blood Diamond is a movie with actors such as Leonardo Dicaprio. You can see there is one obvious difference Chanda's Secrets is a book not a movie. Besides this difference there are many things that are the same.

Blood Diamond is a movie which was released in the year 2006. Blood Diamond stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Danny Archer a diamond smuggler. Archer knows everything about conflict diamonds and how they get put into the market. Jennifer Connolly plays Maddy Bowen an American reporter in Africa who wants to write a story about conflict diamonds. Djimon Hounsou acts as Solomen Vandy a man whose family has been raided by a rebel group called the RUF. They destroyed his village and took his son. Solomen gets captured by the RUF and gets taken away to mine for diamonds in a river. Solomen finds a huge diamond and as the river is getting attacked by the military Solomen runs away with the diamond still buried by the river. Solomen goes to jail because they think he is a RUF, Archer was in the same jail for smuggling diamonds. Archer over hears a leader of the RUF ranting out Solomen saying that he found a huge diamond. Archer gets released and arranges for Solomens release. Archer and Solomen are partnered up but Solomen wants his soon back who is now a RUF child soldier. While Archer just wants the diamond. Archer and Solomen find their way to reporter Maddy Bowen who goes along with them to help them and she wants to take the story to the US to let everyone know about conflict diamonds. Archer is an anti-hero says he will help Solomen but he really just wants the diamond. Solomen just wants to reunite his family.

Chanda's Secrets is a book by Allan Stratton. The book is about a girl named Chanda living in Bonang a town in Africa. She lives with her mother Lillian and her step-brother Soly and step sister Iris. Her father and older brother died in a mining accident. Her mother has been with many men. First with her real father then with Isaac Pheto, Mr. Dube a nice man but he suddenly died, and Jonah her current boyfriend. Chanda questions whether or not Jonah is a good boyfriend. In her neighborhood there is a lot of gossip about one particular thing. AIDS. Chanda's neighbor Mrs. Tafa is someone who receives or tells gossip a lot. Chanda dislikes her but in the end Mrs. Tafa becomes a hero. Esther Chanda's best friend becomes a prostitute to make money so that she can get her family back together again.

Chanda's Secrets and Blood Diamond have smiliarities if you look at it closely. Danny Archer is basically a bad guy in the beginning of the movie only wants the diamond. You can say he is a little greedy. Mrs. Tafa the richest one in the village is the enemy at first to Chanda but in the end she helps Chanda with her struggle. I find that Mrs. Tafa and Danny Archer are similar anti-heroes. Solomen is similar to Esther because they both do whatever they can to get their families back together. Chanda's father and brother died mining for diamonds, in the movie the whole story is about how people die mining for diamonds. So that people in the western world can have them for weddings. Also in the movie there are a bunch of prostitutes who are similar to Esther because that is the only thing they can do to make money so they can survive.

Chanda's Secrets is very similar to Blood Diamond they are both great stories and they are very important to know about these things that are going on in Africa. Though the diamond trading is not all over Africa only in places with a lot of diamonds though the AIDS problem is all over Africa. They are both great and it is good to compare them to learn more about the struggle.

Symbolism in Chanda's Secrets -- 03-29-09

In the book Chanda's Secrets the author, Allan Stratton, uses symbolism in many different ways. It is hard to catch when you first read it, but when you think about it, you realize that in fact, it is symbolism. Symbolism is defined as representing things by symbols, or things with a symbolic meaning. A symbol is an object, picture or a particular mark which represents something by association or resemblance. For example the symbol for the disease AIDS is a red ribbon.

In Chanda's Secrets I found some symbolism. In the book when Esther is with men, Chanda or Esther don't mention exactly what she did with the tourists but the way they both act, you understand what happened. Another example would be the stork that Chanda sees when she's outside at night. This gives Chanda hope, that her Mama will be okay and return home. One more example would be when Jonah was found dead in the well, Chanda realizes that this may not be a suicide, but a murder.

Symbolism I find is a good thing to put in a book, because then when you read it it feels more meaningful. In the book I find that the symbolism made it easier to read.

In January, a photo of Michael Phelps was released in a British tabloid, the photo showed Michael Phelps smoking from a marijuana pipe. The newspapers around the world are saying he acknowledged 'regrettable behavior' and 'bad judgment'. I don't think that there was even real marijuana in the pipe, its a photo, how much evidence is in there?

After reading more into this it seems that Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott was going to investigate Michael Phelps. I think that this Sheriff just wanted his minutes of fame. Lott said that this was not the case and it didn't matter who it was, they were going to be punished anyway. I disagree because not everyone is followed by cameras, so really it is not the same. Finally, the Sheriff said that there was not enough evidence to file charges, so Michael Phelps was officially out of trouble.

Even though Michael Phelps was in that photo, I still like him as an athlete. I think that this whole thing should not have happpened. It was just because he is a celebrity and some people had taken advantage of that. I hope Michael Phelps is doing well and that he learns that the cameras are always watching.

Linda Barnard -- 02-13-09

I like reading the Entertainment section the best in newspapers. So I thought this was a great opportunity to examine a entertainment writer. I chose Linda Barnard, a writer for the Toronto Star. She writes movie reviews I find them very well written because she clearly states her opinion about a movie, and gives you many reasons why. Linda Barnard not only states what the movie is about but some facts about the movie and the actors too. I like her style of writing very effective to convince you that a movie is good or bad. She also writes headlines that get you interested in her article. What is also great about the headline is that it states her opinion as well. This is why I like reading Linda Barnard's articles they are very interesting to read, and her opinion is said clearly about movies.

I was reading some reviews for Coraline and they have different opinions one from USA today saying the animation is great but the story lacks a lot of focus. The other one comes from the Boston Globe saying it is not suitable for children even though it is rated PG, and if you go and see it with your child be prepared to hire a psychiatrist. The Boston Globe story by Ty Burr says that everything else is great and that he enjoyed it. USA today story by Claudia Puig says that the story falters in parts but the animation was great. Claudia Puig makes the movie seem that it's plot was completely rubbish while Ty Burr makes the movie seem extremely unsuitable for children. They both have different point of views but I'm sure the movie isn't as bad as they say.

Star Trek Insurrection Review -- 02-01-09

This weekend I watched the movie Star Trek Insurrection. It is not a new movie, but it was still really good. It is with the Next Generation Crew, and it's about The USS Enterprise E receiving communication saying that Data, when of the crew members, was working on observing the Ba'ku has gone crazy and was not obeying his orders. The Ba'ku are these peaceful people who choose not to use technology as part of their lives. Their culture has been secretly studied. Captain Luc Picard suspects something, so him and his crew go and investigate. With a discovery that could change the Ba'ku's life the crew must figure out a way to protect the peoples life and ways. I really liked this movie because it had a little bit of everything. Action, comedy, romance and drama. It was really good and I enjoyed it very much. I highly suggest it if you like Sci-Fi adventure movies.

Hockey Fighting Debate -- 01-25-09

This weekend I read an article about the hockey fighting debate continuing. There was a conference held concerning this topic during the all-star game and skills competition. One of the main topics of course was the death of the defenceman on the Whitby Dunlops, Don Sanderson. I don't know what I think about this topic. Because maybe everyone would be safer if the fighting would be stopped by the referees in hockey games. But would that mean that a lot of people would stop watching hockey because there is no more fighting. I guess this argument will never be settled, because if they decide to keep the fighting then someone gets injured, the argument is raised once again. If the sports viewings go down the argument is raised. So I think that this argument will always be around.
Hockey Players Death Prompts Police Probe

Police have launched the investigation about the death of Don Sanderson. Don died on a on-ice fight. The first death on-ice since 1972. Mr. Sanderson was 21 years old and played on the AAA Whitby Dunlops. During the fight his helmet fell off, then he fell and hit his head on the ice. He was knocked out for 30 seconds before remaining consciousness, then he stumbled up and got helped off the ice. Don went to the hospital and had brain surgery, and fell into a coma.

"I think the whole debate about fighting and safety equipment needs to happen down the road." Said the Dunlops President Steve Cardwell.

Ms. Palacious, Dons friend said "he loved to play hockey, he put his heart and soul in it."
Quebec police find man, 3 children dead in home

The new year started off bloody when in Chicoutimi, Quebec, police found 3 children and a man dead. Also a woman badly injured. Bruno Cormier, spokesmen for Saguenay police, said a 911 call was placed at 11:56 P.M, a woman was on a phone who was hysterical. They found the injured woman and also two boys aged 4 and 2 and also a 12 year-old girl. Their dad at age 46 also found dead. Nobody knows exactly what happened. The woman is in the hospital, she is important witness and will be questioned when her condition allows her to. The crime was so gruesome some police officers needed to see a psychologist. Police is having trouble locating family members. Neighbors did not know much about them since they recently moved to the neighborhood. The family was described as quiet. A neighbor said the deaths rattled the neighborhood. Yvon Riopel one of the neighbors said "Nothing ever happens. Its very quiet around here."
United Way warns program cuts if target not met

Students in the Regent Park area, have a walk to school program. The economic crunch sometimes settles on violent street corners. This is what the children are trying to avoid. The agency warned that if the United Way of Toronto fails to reach their fund raising target of 2008. This program could be one of the first to be cut. Other programs in risk are fresh food stalls for low income places, suppers on Sunday for the homeless in Kensington Market, and many more programs that receive funding grants. United way announced yesterday that it is so far short of 4 million to reach 110 million. With 2 weeks to go they've not passed the amount in 2006. Ms. Lankin and Bill Mackinon (volunteers) blame the economic turn down. With the Sunday suppers they need more money because more people are hungry with the economy. The programs are a thin slice of what is offered around the city.

My Experience At North Toronto -- 01-20-09

On January 13 I went to the high school North Toronto for the tour. The tour was not very good because it was really short and we didn't get to see all the classes or facilities, even the whole school we did not get to see. But I still thought it was a good school. I want to go to North Toronto instead or Northern because North Toronto is more academic, there is less people, smaller in size, and the school is getting rebuilt. I also rather go to North Toronto because when the Universities, that I will apply to later on, add 5-7 percent to all the kids averages at North Toronto. This will give me an advantage of getting into Universities. This is why I'd rather go to North Toronto than Northern.

3. Describe a dream you had recently provide as much detail as possible.

Recently I started to wear a eye mask to cover my eyes when I'm sleeping. It prevents me from sleep walking and seeing light . When I started to wear this mask, I did not know that dreams came along with it, that would cause me distress.

I put my self to bed one night, turned of the lights and put this dark blue mask on my face. I guess I slept for a while until a noise woke me up. I opened my eyes and I realized that the mask wasn't on me anymore. I looked around on my bed, but I could not see it in the darkness. I was too tired to look for it anymore so I fell asleep. I went into a dream. I was lying in my bed and I found the mask under my pillow, I put on my bed side table. I awoke and looked at my table but a mask was not in sight. Then I remembered that I lost the mask already. I drifted back to sleep, and then into a dream. I was once again in my bed then my mom came in and put the mask on my bedside table. I awoke abruptly and slammed my hand on the table once again no mask.

To conclude of this night, the mask caused me to keep on waking up. Since I kept on waking up I got no sleep. The next morning I awoke and the mask was on the floor beside the night table. Now I do not wear the mask because if it's supposed to help me sleep, but I end up only getting some.

New Years Resolution -- 01-11-09

It is 2009 a brand new year to do different things. My new years resolution is to read more often and to improve my marks in school. I do read books but sometimes I don't have time with homework and sports. So my goal is to read a book whenever I have the spare time. I do get good marks in school but when I have a goal I feel like I have to complete it so then thats how I will improve my marks. In school I will also try harder and do extra credit. 2009, the new year is here and I have told you my resolutions. I plan to keep them, but it can be hard. If I fail or I forget theres always next year.

Christmas Break -- 12-14-08

This Friday, December 19 is the day I get off for Christmas Break. I am really excited for it because Christmas is my favorite holiday. Christmas is really festive, with all the lights outside, the Christmas tree all lit up, and Christmas carols on the radio. I can't wait to spend time with my family and friends. Especially excited that I won't have to go to school for another two weeks. During the Christmas holiday break a lot of people leave the country to go to somewhere warm. I never would leave my country Canada with all the snow this time of year. After Boxing Day my family and I are going to our cottage for skiing/snowboarding. There should be lots of snow like every year. Christmas is my favorite holiday and I can't wait for it to come. Hopefully you will have a happy holiday too.

School Projects -- 12-11-08

School projects are really annoying to me, because they can take a long period of time but they're due in a short period of time. It is also hard with all the different projects and homework you have to do as well. Group projects are fun, but only if you like the group your in. They're better than tests don't get me wrong, but what bugs me is that all the teachers try and make it fun. But then it ends up not being fun and it is harder. These group projects most of the time end up in arguing or the project not being as good. They might not even get handed in. When the teachers don't give you enough class time for your groups, they expect you to meet outside of school. Now you're probably thinking, 'how am I going to find the time?', or you might be thinking 'I don't want to go to that persons house.' This is why school projects are really annoying to me.

Propaganda Speech -- 11-23-08

My fellow students, I am speaking to you today about a subject very close to my heart. It has come to my attention that the tragic earthquake in Balochistan, Pakistan has left thousands of people including children, homeless and fending for their life. It is hard to think about children like us, and younger who have lost everything. Instead of being in school, they are struggling to find clean drinking water and are uncertain about their next meal.

UNICEF has been on the scene from almost the beginning setting up accommodation centres to house thousands. UNICEF workers are doing the best that they can but they are limited in terms of supplies and resources. The fear is that they will run out and will not be able to provide safe drinking water and nutritious food for thousands of children. We need all of your donations now. You can donate at www.unicef.org. Without clean drinking water and necessary medicines children will acquire infectious diseases that may otherwise be preventable. I'm sure you would not want these children to die when all it takes is a donation at www.unicef.org.

Celebrities like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have generously donated to UNICEF efforts not only in Balochistan but all over the world. So far we have received donations from over a million charitable people in response to this new crisis. But donations need to continue so that UNICEF can not only deal with this tragedy, but can be prepared to help out wherever it's needed in the future. Looking around at people you love and care for you understand the value of life and you would not let your loved one die of malnutrition or from contaminated drinking water. I urge you to go online to www.unicef.org.

Do all children deserve clean drinking water, nutritious food, clothing, and a warm safe bed to sleep in at night? The answer is yes and your donations can make this possible at www.unicef.org for the children of Balochistan Pakistan.

Animal Farm Critique -- 11-23-08

The Animal Farm movie was I thought not a very good representation of the book because they changed a lot of the little details that made the book. They also cut out a character. The character they cut out was Clover one of the horses that was always with Boxer another horse. What they did was they cut out Clover and extended Jessie, the dog's part. Some other details are; the makers changed the song Beasts of England to Beasts of The World. They also changed how Old Major died. In the movie he died because he got hit with a shot gun bullet. I also found that the scenes were too extended so it was a little different. The ending was different too its supposed to end when the animals are looking through the window of the house, but the makers extended this too. This is why I thought that the Animal Farm movie was not a good representation of the book.

Get Smart -- 11-16-08

This weekend I saw the movie Get Smart. With Steve Carrel, Anne Hathaway, Dwayne Johnson and Alan Arkin. The movie was very funny. There was an older version too. But it was a show and was very funny as well. At the end of the movie Get Smart they introduce a new character. Does that mean that they will make a series? I believe it does, I mean why not? The new movie was a hit and if you end off with a new character you have to start a new one off with the new character. The character they ended off with was Hymie. In the original series Hymie was a robot. Thats why at the end of the new movie his body sounded like metal. So thats why I think that they should make a new series out of the movie Get Smart.

Royal Winter Fair -- 11-16-08

On Saturday I went to the Royal Winter Fair and watched the horse show and the dog show. It was really fun. At the show we saw the dog who holds the world record for the highest jump by a dog. He showed us the jump but unfortunately could not break his standing record. After the show me and my friends wandered around. We saw sheep, cows and chickens. We also wandered around the stores and we found this Royale toilet paper station. So we looked and its a game. You have to complete this three question survey then you get to play a game to have a chance to win some prizes. The game was a computerized slot machine and you have to match all three. So I did the survey once and I didn't win. But after we explored the rest of the fair, we went back and I won! I won a stuffy of a Royale kitten. It is very cute! That is what I did at the Royal Winter Fair.

Go Leafs Go! -- 11-09-08

On Saturday I went to a leaf game, it was a huge game Montreal v.s Toronto. Half the stadium was filled with Montreal jerseys and the other half Toronto jerseys. I got amazing tickets for free, from my friend who hates hockey. They were platinum tickets! 8th row. Not only were the tickets great the game was great. The leafs won 6-3! Grabovski is a former player from the Canadiens he did not get a lot of playing time at all, when he was with the Canadiens. So in the showdown not only did his team win but he got two goals as well. This game was also very special because it was a hall of fame weekend and at the beginning of the game the had some veterans come in and read "Flanders Fields" it was very emotional. After the ceremony the veterans got a standing ovation. Gaye Stewart read the poem he was a former leaf player and a World War II veteran. This game was a great game to go and see I hope most of you watched it on T.V.

Migration -- 11-05-08

If I were to migrate for a vacation I would go to Orange County in California. (O.C.) I would go there because it is a change of scenery. Instead of looking outside to a busy Toronto street, I would see huge mansions and an ocean. The weather would also be very nice because it is hot and hardly ever cold. I would also want to migrate to California because it would be a big adventure, like the ones in The O.C show. But maybe a little less dramatic.

If I had to choose to live somewhere permanently I would live in New York. It has a lot of job opportunities, and it would be easy to transport around the city with all the taxis everywhere. They weather is hot or cold but that is normal. I think I do need snow at the end of my year. There are a lot of apartments I could move into. There is just so many different opportunities and adventures you could embark on in New York. This is why I would live in New York and take a trip to California.

Dear editor,
I am a citizen of Canada and I live in Canada West, Toronto and I am upset about your article about the United States taking over North America. You do not have any right to say that because nobody knows what will happen. You are just raising hopes for the citizens of the United States and making Canadian citizens concerned. Manifest destiny is what many people believe in, I respect that but to publish it in a newspaper saying it's going to happen is a little too much. If America invades Canada I guess you assume that are armies cannot pull it off, but we can. The United States may be surrounding our provinces but we can still defend our people. I am offended and I completely disagree with you. You should not have published that article.

AC/DC -- 11-02-08

This Friday I might be going to a AC/DC concert. They will probably play their whole new album and their classic old stuff. The thing that makes AC/DC unique is their ability to rock. Singer, Brian Johnson has a crisp scratchy voice which really makes the songs legendary. Angus Young the lead guitarist has great stage presence and his guitar solos make the crowd scream. Malcolm Young brother of Angus is the rhythmic guitarist and back-up singer. Angus and Malcolm are the founders of AC/DC. Other members are Phil Rudd the drummer, and Cliff Williams is the bass guitar. AC/DC stands for Alternate Current/Direct Current. They are an Australian rock band formed in Sydney in 1973 by the founders Angus and Malcolm. Their new album Black Ice including songs Black Ice and Rock 'N' Roll Train. This album is their first album in eight years. The concert is going to be awesome.

Prom Night -- 11-01-08

I saw the movie Prom Night on Halloween and I thought it was good. I was surprised to hear that it was a remake so I wanted to read about the old one and it was really different. It's not just the
names it's the whole entire plot that's different. In the old one there is not teacher who gets obsessed with a student at all. The old one is about this group of 12 year olds who were playing a game in an abandoned house and an accident led to a death. They decided to keep a secret forever. Little did they know there was someone watching. 6 years later it's prom night for the group of kids and the past is coming back to haunt them. The new Prom Night is about a teacher who gets obsessed with a student and murders her family, he escapes from prison and comes back on her prom night. He'll do anything to get to her.
The two videos below are the trailers for both movies.
Page #43
Melissa Moon was putting her books in her purse to head home. She was the most popular girl in Winston Prep School, but no one really did know her. Everybody thinks she's perfect but really she's not and that's what bugs her the most. Melissa walked out of her high school into the parking lot heading for her white Lexus convertible. She drove out of the parking lot and drove to her huge Beverly Hills mansion. Her house was so huge when she got her new pet dog it got lost so many times it took three months before it knew where it was going.

* Roots were important to Melissa. Even though she lived in a Bel Air palace, she wasn't about to let the general public forget where she grew up: South Central, people. In a duplex. And then she'd put a hand on her hip, daring you to judge her. To her endless disappointment, no one ever did. But come on, they weren't crazy. Her dad had Melissa tattooed on his fist. We're not talking her name, either. We're talking her entire baby picture.

Up in Melissa's room she talked on the phone with her father Seedy. He was going to be late again. Now she was stuck with her dad's "bride to be" Vivian Ho. Her dad Seedy Moon was a famous rapper, her mother Brooke Moon, Melissa hadn't seen her since she was ten. The court granted her no visitation rights because she couldn't hold a job and stay sober. When her mom was in rehab she'd always send her letters and they would always end in "Misses and kisses for my baby Melisses!" Melissa missed her mom.

"Muh-liss-ahhh!" Vivian shrieked up the stairs.

"Whhhaaat?!" Melissa screamed back.

"I waant to tahhhhllk to SEEDY!" Vivian yelled so loud it was terrifying.

"Dad, Vivian wants to talk to you, that's why she was yelling." Melissa sounded innocent on the phone.

"Sure, put her on." Seedy replied with a sigh. Melissa figured he was stressed with the wedding plans Vivian was throwing at his face.

"Okay, hold on a sec." Melissa carried the phone downstairs where Vivian was looking through wedding magazines.

"Here." Melissa said she tossed the phone to Vivian who didn't even move or respond to the throw. So the phone dropped on the marble floor and broke into tiny little pieces.

"Oh ma goshh! It's all your fault!" Vivian screamed at Melissa furiously. They were going to get into one of these fights again, Melissa thought. But instead Melissa picked up the phone pieces placed them on the counter and slowly walked up the stairs. She did not want Vivian to ruin her day.

A phone call came at 11:00 on Melissa's phone. She turned down her T.V, looked at the caller display it read Unknown Caller. Melissa answered her phone.
"Hello?" Melissa said.
"Sweetie it's me Brooke, your mother."

"Mom? It's really you?" Melissa was excited.

"I'm outside in a cab they released me from rehab, I'm better!" Brooke you can tell was in tears while she spoke. Melissa ran outside passing Vivian in the hallway.

"Where are you...like going?" Vivian asked. But Melissa ignored her and opened her front door. There was her mom, she was healthy and smiling with tears running down her face. Behind her was Seedy, her father.

"Melissa sweetheart they gave me visitation rights after I checked out." Brooke said whiping her tears. Melissa ran and hugged her mom.

"I missed you so much." Melissa burst in to tears. Her father walked up to both of them.

"Melissa tomorrow you will go to your mom's house. Well it is her week." Seedy smiled.

"Okay, I would like that." Melissa spoke quietly.

"Melissa I have to go back to my house but I will see you tomorrow." Brooke explained. Brooke left in a cab. Melissa ran upstairs to her bed she was so excited. She curled up in her bed, she was truly happy.

It was a dark stormy day in October, the waves were rough and the air was cold. I could see the boat through the mad splashing waves. The boat was trying to get to the dock but the wind like a rope kept tugging it back. The boat rocking back and forth, trying to dock during this furious storm. A crash of thunder then a bolt of lightning. The boat finally made it back to land with a ripped white ghost sail and a broken deck filling with water so quickly, like a bath. You could smell the freshness of the mist. All night the storm was going, the whistling wind and the rattling trees. In the morning I awoke a bright colorful rainbow was in the sky. You could see all the trees along the shore in the lake which was acting as a mirror. Another fall day was beginning.

Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard, are the best books ever! I really recommend these books if you like The O.C and drama. It's about these five girls living in a town called Rosewood in Pennsylvania. Their names are Aria, Hanna, Emily, Spencer, and their leader Alison. In the last few weeks of 7th grade Alison went missing, the friends split and now have nothing in common. Except the text messages they are getting from someone anonymous called "A". A few years later her body was found but the texts keep on coming and they can't tell anyone. Because "A" knows the deep dark secrets about the stuff they did in seventh grade. But the secrets is what they only shared with Alison. Could the killer of Alison's body be led to this? Read the series and I promise you wont regret it! The first one is called Pretty Little Liars, second called Flawless, third called Perfect and the fourth called Unbelievable.

Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull -- 10-18-08

I wanted to see the new Indiana Jones movie for so long and I finally saw it. The beginning of the movie was a bit confusing for me, but then I remembered the first Indiana Jones and then it made sense to me. The story and the plot were pretty good but some of the fight scenes went on and on forever. But it did make the movie more intense and captivating. I didn't like the fact that they were extra terrestrials in the movie because it made the movie less about archeology fiction and more about science fiction. There were still a lot of good parts and the special effects were great too. I still recommend that you see it because it is a great movie. That is what I thought of the new Indiana Jones movie.

The Mist -- 10-10-08

Last weekend I saw the movie The Mist. My friends told me before that it was a bad movie, but I still wanted to see it anyway. It's about the military doing experiments and aliens are hidden in this mist that's expanding around this city. So the protagonist is trapped in a grocery store. No one can leave because the aliens will kill you. This women who goes to church a lot develops this group in the grocery store, saying "god is punishing us". The protagonist makes a group to escape the grocery store. As their about to leave, the woman wants his son for a sacrifice, they managed to escape by killing her. The movie was okay until the end. The protagonist, his son, and three friends, try and drive out of the mist. The car runs out of gas and they have a gun and are considering suicide. But there are 5 people but 4 bullets. So the protagonist says they can have the bullets. He kills his 8 year old son, and three friends in the car. He steps out of the car with blood on his hands waiting for an alien to come and kill him. He hears a rumbling noise, a tank with military people come driving out of the mist to come and rescue him, after the tank is a bunch of buses and cars following with people in them. He gets on his hands and knees, with the blood still on his hands. Watches the cars as the mist slowly fades away.

I thought the movie was okay but I didn't understand why the Protagonist suffered, and the people in the grocery store he wanted his son dead got rescued. I thought that it was a bit unfair. But the movie is still okay.

Creative Story -- 10-10-08

Suerda Giorgio Eriksson left his house in a tiny village in Mexico, he wanted to play soccer. He looked out his bus window with his duffel bag on his lap. The coach of the Mexican soccer team drafted him. Suerda's mother Katalina, refused but it was his destiny. He felt so guilty the way he left his mother, now since he was gone she would have to do all the work. Then again he was doing this for her. The bus ride was full of people, different people. There were tourists, farmers, and of course Mexicans. But he was pretty sure that he was the only soccer player on the bus. He had too many thoughts in his head, too many worries, in a few minutes he drifted off into a dream.

Suddenly the bus came to a halt. The screech of the brakes woke Suerda. He was the only one left on the bus, he looked out his window they were right outside the soccer coliseum. Suerda stepped out of the bus and took a look at the soccer coliseum, this was his future. He walked in with his duffel bag for his first practice.

A few days later it was the first season game Suerda was so nervous he could hardly breathe. But he remembered why he was here, for his mother. The whistle blew and Suerda got the ball passed it to the captain who passed it back to him. He saw an open lane by the side line, he booked carrying the ball closer and closer to the other goalies teams net. He took a hard kick, it glided through the air past the goalies finger tips and in the top right corner of the net. The crowd roared with excitement. In the game the passes kept on coming to him and he kept on scoring. Suerda was amazing. At the end of the game the coach held his jersey with his to initials SG and his last name Eriksson. His mothers last name. Suerda smiled and wondered what his mother was doing right now.

Katalina was in the market walking along, she missed her darling child. As she reached to look at some jewelery her son was on the front page. She looked at it and read the article. She had tears in her eyes, but they weren't tears of sadness they were tears of joy.

Tom Petty and Bon Jovi -- 10-05-08

Tom Petty and Bon Jovi are famous American rock musicians with a huge fan following. They started out in small towns but ended up filling stadiums full of people anticipating their musical performance. They are of different ages and backgrounds different paths, and different styles in music. Both Tom and Jon have great talents, and ambitions. They continue to this day to create great music and wonderful songs that people enjoy.

Jon Bon Jovi born as John Francis Bongiovi, was born on March 2 1962, which makes him currently 46 years of age. John is an Italian-American, he was born in Sayreville, New Jersey. He has sold over 120 million albums with his band called Bon Jovi. As a solo artist he has sold 10 million albums. When he was 17 years old he had a job at his cousins recording studio. One day he was sweeping, and his cousin asked him if he could sing the "R2-D2 We Wish You A Merry Christmas" for the Star Wars Christmas album. That song was his first professional recording, later in 1983 he left the recording studio for a record deal. Mercury gave him that recording contract, John had to promote a song he wrote called Runaway. He called up Richie Sambora, David Bryan, Tico Torres, and Alec John Such to form a band. The group decided to call it Bon Jovi and the name stuck. That is also how he changed his name to suit the band. So in 1983 the band Bon Jovi was formed. The genre's of his music include; hard rock, glam metal, and AOR (Album Oriented Rock). Bon Jovi can play the harmonica, piano, guitar, and has great vocals too. To this day he is a great musician, songwriter and actor.

On October 20 1950 in Gainesville, Florida, Thomas Earl Petty was born. Tom Petty is at age 57 and still with the Heartbreakers a band that he formed in 1975 with Mike Campbell, and Benmont Tench. Tom Petty became a recording artist when he was 26 years old recording his debut album with the Heartbreakers. Tom Petty wanted to be in a band ever since he was 11 years old and saw The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show. Tom Petty is the lead frontman of the Heartbreakers, as well as a solo artist. The genres of his music include; rock, and heartland rock. Tom Petty can play the guitar, piano, harmonica, bass guitar, drums and has good vocals. He is a great musician with so many talents and is still continuing his dream with his band.

Both Jon Bon Jovi, and Tom Petty are famous American musicians, and are both songwriters, however they differ greatly in their background, and musical evolutions. Bon Jovi and Tom Petty were both born and raised in a small town in the US, but Tom was raised in the deep south while Jon grew up in colder New Jersey. This had an impact on their musical styles, and songwriting approaches. Tom Petty developed a unique southern sound while Jon Bon Jovi had a more hard rock sound. They both can play the guitar, harmonica and the piano. Tom Petty however can also play the bass guitar and the drums. Tom Petty is almost 12 years older than Jon Bon Jovi, and Jon began recording at the age of seventeen, Tom Petty began at a later age of 26. Bon Jovi changed his name to suit his band while Tom Petty kept his birth name. Tom Petty and Jon Bon Jovi are both talented, and successful musicians. They both continue to create different types of rock music, each appealing to millions of fans which sometimes also overlap.

Tom Petty and Bon Jovi came from humble beginnings and infamous places they were both guided by their love of music. Tom took the warm southern style which is evident in his singing and style of speech. Jon went towards the road of rock with a northern edge. Today they both continue to be common household names in North America whether from Superbowl half time show or performing at a presidential candidate rally. Both Tom Petty and Jon Bon Jovi have influenced peoples lives through their music.

Soccer Ball Crash Creative Story -- 10-02-08

The soccer season is starting and Nike wanted to make a huge, outrageous soccer monument. It had to be better than all of the other soccer advertisements, it had to be the best. The president of the company was walking through the soccer isle of one of his stores. He was thinking, pacing back and forth across the isle. Then all of the sudden it was right in front of him, the gorgeous gleaming red and white it was. The president quickly ran up to his office to make his plans. His idea was so crazy that it just might work.

Nike had an outrageous idea for publicity that went wrong, it might not have been the smartest idea to put a giant ball on their roof of their store. But it did cause a lot of attention when they were putting it up. After all the presidents slogan is "To win big you have to dream big." The ball rolling off the roof could have killed many people, but the president of the company Adidas stopped it from rolling down the street. Nike got their publicity but Adidas had to pay the price.

The Nano Chromatic -- 09-28-08

A couple days ago I saw the commercial for the Nano Chromatic, I thought it was just the same thing as the other Nano's just different shape and color but it turns out that there are more new features. For example you can turn it on it's side and have cover flow (where you view the album covers). They also have a new feature called the "genius feature", when your listening to a song you click on genius and it finds other songs that go great with it. It's like having your own little personalized DJ. My favorite feature though is when your listening to a song and you want to change it at random, you shake it and it shuffles the song. The nano can also play video, play games, and view your pictures. I think these new ipods are the going to be very popular.

One of my favorite shows is the O.C my friend got me to watch it last year and so far I have been obsessed! It is a very dramatic soap opera and kind of funny too. But the show stopped at just 4 seasons which made me very upset. I think they stopped making it because they killed off one of the main characters and everyone stopped watching it after. I guess the writers thought that no one would care about her characters death. I think the season after was actually much better than the ones they made with the character, Marissa played by Mischa Barton. Before I never watched the show and people think it is really stupid but I don't think they even watch it. You have to get really into it and start at the very beginning of the season or else your completely lost. That is why I like the O.C

9/11 -- 09-20-08

There are a lot of opinions to what had happened on that dreadful day. But really nobody knows for sure, I just have an opinion of what happened to the World Trade Center, Pentagon and Flight 93 crashing into a field. I do not think the US did it, but I don't know who I think did it. You can say there are an awkward amount of coincidences, and automatically think that the United States planned this whole entire thing. What if these coincidences were all planned?

My opinion of 9/11 is that when the government was doing those terrorist attack practices, on The Pentagon, and the Twin Towers. I think somebody stole those plans and tried to frame everything on the US government. For example, the plane that hit The Pentagon I think that somebody sent a missile and planted a bit of evidence but not enough and hid the plane somewhere else. The US government cannot release anything to the public because they are still trying to find the people who did this. If they released what information they had it would jeopardize their investigations. The plane that hit the field I think it was another missile and the plane was hid with the other one. For the Twin Towers the two planes hit but there was explosions in the lobby I think the hijackers planted the bombs in the lobbies before. So a few moments after the planes hit the lobbies exploded and the impact of the planes made the towers collapse. The leader in the Pentagon did not react when he was told that a plane was coming because maybe he thought it was a drill. Because if he was told that the Twin Towers was hit he thought it was all part of the plan because of the terrorist practices.

That is my opinion of what happened. You can say that my whole idea is too much too crazy. But some people think it is not crazy that the government did it. We will never know for sure what will happen unless more evidence comes along or the US finds the people and releases video and their plans. That might be a while away, but I'm sure it will happen.
I found that the new Journey singer, (Arnel Pineda) that we saw, had quite an interesting story to it. As the blog describes "Arnel Pineda's story is truly one for the internet age."

When Journey's lead singer Jeff Scott Soto left, Journey needed a new singer. Journey's guitarist Neal Schon was looking at videos on Youtube to try and find a new singer. He came across this band called "The Zoo", the singer of the band was Arnel Pineda. Neal gave them a message, and tried his best to convince the band that he was actually Neal Schon.

Arnel's friend in The Zoo, Noel received the message on Youtube. Arnel thought it was just some scam and ignored it. Noel said "What if it really was Neal and he wanted to offer you a chance of a lifetime?"
So they emailed Neal and soon he was the lead singer of Journey. That's when Arnel began his amazing journey with one of the best bands in the world.

Who Am I?

My name is Emese, and I'm going to tell you a bit about myself, and also my likes, and dislikes.
I love to play different sports, and to run, but my favorite sport to play is soccer. I also like to watch football, soccer and hockey. I like to try almost anything new that comes upon me. I have a lot of pets, and I love animals. I hope to be a veterinarian when I grow up. I like going to concerts, and listening to music. I don't like negativity, rap music, sad movies, and things that are cheesy. I try to be organized but it never works for me I'm just naturally messy. I have an older brother, but no other siblings. My favorite subjects in school are Gym and Math. I don't have a favorite food, because I like trying different foods. I care for the environment, and I love to be out side with nature. I hope you learned a bit about me, and I would like to learn about you too.

Puppy Torture -- 09-06-08

One of my friends told me about this video of a US marine throwing a puppy over a cliff. I looked more into it, this incident happened in March, when the video was posted.

YouTube took the video off due to a terms of use violation.

"We will investigate this and take appropriate actions." Marine corps spokesman Chris Perrine said.

"Later in June 2008 the two marines Lance Cpl. David Motari and Sgt. Crismarvin Banez Encarnicion had both been punished for their actions. Motari has been kicked out of the corps and received a non lawful punishment, but the marine corps would not specify because of privacy regulations. Encarnicion who was filming the video received a non lawful punishment as well. A statement made by the US marines said they conducted an investigation as soon as the video came to their attention. In a statement The US Humane Society applauded the marine corps decisions."

I think even though the marines were frustrated I do not think they should take their anger out on a puppy.
