Environmental Systems -- 06-06-08

Here is what I know about systems.
A system is a group of small things that work together to get something big done.
An example of a system is the water on earth. It starts, things happen it make it start it again.
I know that if one species went extinct, then it could change anther speicies way of life. For example if a speacies of deer became extinct, then the animals living on that deer would become hungry. They would have to move to where there is more food or even hunt other animals. Other animals would have to adapt to each others habits so then the system starts over again.

All City Track Meet -- 05-30-08

My class got to go to an all city track meet!!!!
I did the 75 meter dash and I made the FINALS!!!
I ended up getting 4th out of 8!

Since i'm in fifth grade and you can't do many sports through school, this was my first ever track meet. It was one of the things that I will remember from fifth grade.
Waiting for my event was like torture but I guess Professor McG. would love that. (She's the master of torture:) I watched to of my guy friends get first places for the 50 meter in two different heats. Then I watched my friend Goldilocks do amazing in the shot put. Then another friend Violet went to do the 200 meter and got 2nd place. I waited until finally, it was time for my event, the 75 meter. I was running it with my friend Taryn adn my friend from another class, Mariah. I was in the very last heat and I got 2nd place with a time of 12.35. Just hearing my friends yell my name, telling me that I could win gave me confidence. I was in the first lane but it didn't matter cause it was in a strait line. Then I saw the starter of the race put his finger on the trigger and BOOM! I started running and adrenaline pumped through my body. All I concentrated on the finnish line. Everything else seemed of unimportance. Before I knew it, I ran through the finnish line and got 2nd.
I waited after the 400 meter and the 800 meter until finally, the speaker's voice boomed through the stadiom. It said "Here are the finalists for the 75 meter dash..." I couldn't belive it when they called my name. I couldn't even hear anything else but the chearing and yelling. I went down to the track and waited. Professor McG. would be proud fo me for being so tortured at the starting line cause I had to wait five minuets until I got to race. I couldn't hear anything but the boom from the starting line and finally I raced across the finnish line. I got 4th with a time of 12.12. I felt great when people kept coming up to congratulate me. Finally it was time for one of my favorite races even thought I wasn't racing. The Relay Race. The girls realy did amazing and got 3rd place. Then something else amazed me. I was the boys relay team come out and they got...1st!!!! I couldn't belive it! We were all disapointed when we had to leave, but hey we can do it again through school in 6th grade...

No Taxation without Representation -- 05-23-08

Here is essay that I wrote.

No Taxation Without Representation!
Colonists live under the rule of the King
By Sabrina

In the year 1667, King Charles granted a charter to the Connecticut colony allowing the colonists the right to make their own laws. (Speare 70). Assemblies elected by the colonists made laws, set taxes and raised companies of troops called militia to defend the colonies. (Charter, 8). In 1687, King James wanted the British Parliament to be able to make laws for the colonists, or in other words take away the charter. (Speare, 70).
In 1764, British Parliament could make laws for the colonists. The King needed money to pay for the militia that protected the colonies in the French and Indian war. He decided to make the colonies pay for some of the money needed. (Harcourt, 226).
The King started taxes with the Sugar Act in 1764. (Harcourt, 272). “This tariff angered the colonists but what bothered them most is that they had no part in making this new law”. The King and British Parliament all had a say in passing laws. “Unlike other British citizens, the colonists could not elect lawmakers… but parliament was quick to remind colonists they were still British subjects.” (Harcourt, 263).
The Stamp Act was another blow to the colonists’ democratic ideas. The colonists had been practicing self-government, separate from the king, for years. They collected their own taxes to pay for taxes to pay for services in the colonies. The Congress sent an appeal for peace and harmony to King George and suggested that parliament get rid of all the unconstitutional laws controlling America. (Schanzer, 27) The Stamp Act of 1765 was another attempt by the parliament to get the colonists for help pay the war dept. “The new tax law angered the people in the colonies”. (January, 6). The Stamp Act was made as a tax on everything that was paper that you could purchase. Things like newspapers had to have a special stamp on it so people know that a tax had been paid for it. Parliament added these new laws to show they could still make laws for the colonists. (Harcourt, 277). The Stamp Act congress met to discuss the new law. It was there Patriot James Otis recited the famous line “No Taxation Without Representation”. These British laws were directly against the democratic ideas the colonists had been practicing for 100 years.
The colonists did not get to elect representatives into British Parliament. They did not have any say in the laws they were being forced to live by. Parliament decided to make one last tax; the tax on tea in 1773. “Parliament canceled all the taxes except the tax on tea”. (Maestro, 7). The colonists were fed up with all the taxes and not being represented a British citizens. On one late night in December, Patriots called The Sons of Liberty dressed as Mohawk Indians and raided a ship that held British tea. They split all the tea boxes and threw them into the harbor. The event came to be known as the Boston Tea Party. The so-called Boston Tea Party infuriated King George and Parliament. He blockaded Boston Harbor not allowing any ships with merchandise to come in or out as a punishment. The colonists wanted to be free of King George’s rule.
The colonists were British citizens living in America. Their rights were being trampled by all the taxes and laws they had no say in. They protested and soon the cry of “No Taxation Without Representation” could be heard all around the colonies.
In 1776, in the Revolutionary War, the Continental Army or the colonists made history in the war against Britain. They were truly free.

MOUNTIAN SCHOOL! -- 03-20-08

BOOM-CHICKA-BOOM!
We just got back from MOUNTAIN SCHOOL! It was amazing. I thought that it would be sleeping out in tents but the LODGES had bunk beds and bathrooms. The lodges even had a place like a common room just for hanging out. The three lodge names were CEDAR, PINE AND FIR lodges. Cedar was the girls lodge, pine was for the teachers and other students and fir was the boys lodge. The dining hall was one of the best buildings there I thought. They had tables carved out of fallen trees, a buffet line and a great view of the lake. The dam, Diablo Dam had a sheer drop that was 386 feet tall! At night we would gather around a camp fire and sing songs like BOOM-CHICKA-BOOM and also do skits and tell legends.
Then we went on a night hike and we ate wintergreen lifesavors and our mouthes sparked. Then I thought I saw something moving behind us and Violet started crying and Goldilocks started screaming and Tayrn did something else that she didn't want people to know about. The adaults thought that it was just snow but when it started MOVING we knew it wasn't snow it was a white deer that wasn't albino.

We did a lot of other things that were really cool like learning to track animals, learning about skat or poop and looking at bugs under microscopes.( REALLY FREAKY!)

Idiarod Writing Assignment -- 03-14-08

Dear Mom and Dad,
For our trip we should go to Alaska. Why Alaska? There is cool scenery, interesting activities but most of all; I want to watch the Iditarod Race.

What is the Iditarod? The Eskimos and Inuit people were the first humans that traveled the course known as the Iditarod trail. It started back when gold was found in Nome Alaska. Later a terrible disease spread in Nome. This disease was known as Diphtheria. The only cure was a medicine known as Anit-Toxin. A team of sled dogs was sent to get the medicine from Anchorage and back to Nome. The trip was more than 1000 miles. In 1973, Joe Reddington thought that to honor the dogs that had saved Nome, there should be a race from Anchorage to Nome. The race is known as the Iditarod Race.

The weather in Alaska is really unpredictable. It could be freezing cold with blizzards or warm, which is dangerous because the ice could melt. Anything could happen on the trail.

Along the trail, mushers and dogs face many challenges together. They must work as a team. The Yukon River is one of many. On the trail there is a checkpoint on top of a mountain. That checkpoint is known as Rainy Pass. There are also many hills and rivers to complicate things. The mushers and dogs risk all to win the race.

Mushers and dogs work completely as a team. At the beginning, mushers must knit at least 1000 booties for the dogs. Booties are like shoes that dogs wear to protect their feet. A team is usually one musher and 17 to 18. Sometimes if a dog is sick of injured, then the musher leaves that dog at the next checkpoint. Over all there are usually about 70 racers. This year there were about 100. My musher is Lance Mackey. He won the 2007 Iditarod and this years Iditarod race.

Once again the reason I want to go to Alaska is to watch the Iditarod race. I would learn about sled dog racing, history and have FUN!!!!!!

Division Problem -- 02-26-08

Professor McGonagall is really getting annoying with the division we are doing:)
Today she started us off with 38028/4(She said that the / means divided by so)

To make up a really good BIG division problem you have to think of the multiplues of the number that you are dividing by. In this case it's 4 so now you think of the basic facts of 4

The only pairs that I split the number into are
36000/4
2000/4
28/4=7
I got those because 38 can be split into 36 with 2 left over.
I got the 20 from the left over 2 from the 38 and the 0 in 38028.
Lastly I got the 28 from the last two numbers in 38028.

To figure out 36000 I started with 36 and built up.
36/4=9
360/4=90
3600/4=900
36000/4=9000
So to start out with a 9000. Now I do the same with the 2000 and 28.

I start with 20 and...
20/4=5
200/4=50
2000/4=500
...you have a 500 and a 9000=9500

Then you do the same with the 28...
28/4=7
and you have a 9000, 500 and a 7. Add them all up and you get 9507. Do you get it?
That is a really long way to division even though long division is doing all that in only a little work.

Field Trip to BHS -- 02-06-08

My class went on a feild trip to BHS! We are in fifth grade so going to BHS was a big treat! There we saw the school's band, orchestra, and choir. It gave us an oppertunity to wisit a school and motivate us to take up one of these. They all motivated me to start them, but I think I will start BAND. We got to see the JAZZ band and the BHS drum line. The instrument I want to take most is the set of drum set in jazz band. In the orchastra they played a lot of songs but my favoriate was the soundtrack to the Priates of the Caribbean.
In choir, they sang alot of songs in different languages. It was really cool to hear.
In band, they played all sorts of different instruments. Together, it sounded AWESOME!
That field trip was one the most funnest one i've ever had!

A conflict is when each person in the problem has a dirrerent side of the stort. Like if one person thinks that they should do one thing and the other person thinks another. Theat's a CONFLICT.

Bullying is always onesided. So if someone corners you and makes mean gestures and says mean things to you.

Hey All,
My class is learning about the Revolutionary War, or the American Revolution. Either of those names are correct. Anyway here are two questions my teacher wanted me to answer.
Q1. Why did British Parliament decide to tax the colonists living in America?
Q2. Why did the colonists decide not to pay the taxes?
A1 The British taxed the colonies so that they would have to help pay for the war that protected them.
A1 The colonists responded by not paying the taxes because they thatouh it was unfair that they didn't have a say in this new tax law.

Other questions that YOU can answer.
Q1 Why did the colonists call the event that had happened in 1770 "The Boston Massacre"?
Q2 What kind of indians did the patriots dress up as on the night os the "Boston Tea Party"?
Just comment back.
A webkin is like an online pet. You play games to earn money to feed them, buy clothes for them and take care of them.
Our webkinz names are DragonDog and LilyLeopard. You build and create your webkinz names and rooms on the internet. It's really cool. To get there you have to first buy one(my teacher got them for a christmas present)then you just google "webkinz".

Hey People!
Over the Martain L. King holiday weekend, I went to my grandparents house where it had snowed like three feet! The best thing that happened was that the town that they live in, you could walk around it in 15 minuets. They dont need one of the roads that leads to the store and theater so they plow the streets and shove all the snow onto one unused street so there is alwyas a HUGE pile of snow there. Me and my family were there the whole weedend and it was awesome!

Photostyory Projects -- 01-15-08

Hey world,
Me and my class started a photostory project. We are using photostory to record our voices and turn them into where we read aloud from a picture book and add your voice to make it sound and look PROFESSIONAL.
First, we took the pictures of all the pages of the book.
Second, we cropped them and addded them to photostory.
Third, we custimized the motion the way we wanted. What I mean by that is we made it zoom in or out of a part of the picture of made it move across the picture like in movies.
Fourth, we recorded our voice and spoke the story into a microphone. It would imediatley add the voice to the story.
Last, we chose the music that you wanted for your story.
The book I read is Oh the Places You'll Go, by Dr. Seuss.

Subtraction Stratagies -- 12-03-07

Hey All,
Sabrina here.
I'm here to tell you about an easy subtraction stratagie. It's called the Beastley/Easy stratagie. Don't ask me why, ask Smeagol. I DO know how to use it.
First, in a subtraction problem like 785-497 you want to break it up. The BEASTLEY number is the number that you keep the same.In this problem, the beastley number is 797. We call it the stratagie beastley/easy because you leave one number beastley and it's an easy way to slove subtraction problems. I would split 492 up as a 400. I would split the 90 up as an 80 and a 10. I would split the 7 up as a 5 and a 2.
Then I would take the 400 away from the 785 and it equals 385. Then 385-80=305, 305-5=300,
300-10=290, 290-2=288. Do you see how that works?
If so, it will make tough problems like that a lot easier.

Bats -- 11-09-07

Hey World
Me and my class just had a lesson on bats.We learned a lot, but we mostly learned about ECOLOCATION. I learned that the bats make clicking sounds to high pitched for human ears to hear. They make clicking sounds so that if the sounds bounce back to the bat, there is an object in front of them and they know to avoid it.
The lesson was an amazing way to learn and have fun.

Catapults -- 11-08-07

Hi Everyone,
It's me Sabrina!
Me and my class just finnished an experiment with catapults.
We wanted to do a controlled experiment so first we changed the size of the thing we are flinging. First we started out with a big foil ball and we saw how HIGH it would go. We did the same with the medium, small and tiny balls. We recorded the results to see it there was a pattern in the answers. We did the same with all of the balls but, to see how FAR we could fling them.
The variable that made the most difference for HEIGHT, was the tension on the catapult.
The vairable that made the most difference for LENGHT, was how far the catapult was sticking out of the launcher.
A controlled experiment is an experiment that is controlled. You would test your experiment, and to try to make a difference, change a variable on the next time you do the experiment. Then, you would do the next test but, change a diffenert variable and so on.

Hey it's me again! My class is learning about METACOGNITION. Metacognition is when you think about our thinking. One question is how do we learn now things. One answer to this question is school. We learn from adults who already know this stuff. We can also learn from our mistakes. If you do something wrong, then you will know what not to do or what made an expermint wrong. you can also learn by seeing what other people are doing. you could copy a grown up. Those are some ways to learn new things.

Prime and Composite -- 09-20-07

Hey World
I used to think that a prime number is an even number and a composite number is an odd number. As you probably guessed, I'm talking about Prime and Composite numbers. A prime number is a number that only has 2 factors. Or in other words, a number that only has one factor pair. A composite number is a number that can be split up evenly more that once. An example of a prime number is 13 because the only factor pair is 1 times 13. An example of a composite number is 20 because it can be 2 times 10 equals 20 and 4 times 5 equals 20.
Thats what I know about prime and composite numbers.

Pendulumes -- 09-20-07

Hi world
My class is learning about pendulumes. At first I didn't even know that the word existed. Now I know that they can be used in a grandfather clock to measure the number of seconds. After we did the experiment, I changed my opinion on alot of things. First we agreeded that in a controled expermint that we would first change the lengh of the string. First we made it long. We wanted to see if the length of the string affected how many times the pendulume would swing back and forth in 15 seconds. We found out it did. We decided that the longer the string, the fewer the swings, and the shorter the string, the greater the swings. Then we changed the number of washers attached to the string. We started with only one washer then added on more after we had tested it three times. we found out that the number of washers didn't matter at all. It still swung back and forth the same amount of times in 15 econds. That's all I know about pendulumes.
Sincerely, Sabrina
