How my opinions have changed

Article posted November 17, 2008 at 03:50 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 1856

After researching the questions a.) to e.), I have decided to create a new post which will show how my opinions have changed (if they have) and what my opinions are now.

a.)A researcher is someone who accurately investigates a topic/ subject area etc. They study a subject to create a theory or revise a topic for their own reports.

b.)We use the internet because it is what other media and sources tell us to do. Sometimes it may be more convenient but sometimes it takes up more time trying to get around error messages, than it would to pick up a book and get our information.

The internet has changed a lot over the last 15 years when the first web page was first written on the13th November. Then, it wasn’t possible to do much via the internet, but the internet has become a lot more advanced. We can shop online, do online banking and a lot more.

In another 5 or 10 years, I think that the internet will look different to what it does now. With the rate that it is developing and expanding anything is possible. I think that a lot more technology and time consuming methods of doing tasks will be eliminated by the internet and it will become even more of a convenience.

c.)I still strongly believe that the internet has changed the way that we learn. There are many online tutorials which people use in their own time. Sometimes these are easier to understand than an actual person trying to teach you themselves. There are a range of programs and instructions online which assists us in trouble shooting etc. The internet gives us the impression that we are learning from technology.
As an example, I came across a document which displayed the effectiveness of online learning and the change in which we communicate and learn in our own time. Cisco, has developed an online video collaboration tool which allows its employees to contact and communicate each other. They have included online training programs and employees can ask live questions. These programs have been described as ‘like a real classroom’, but yet they are changing how we think and learn in our own time.

The internet allows us to learn from others from around the world and to post our own ideas and thoughts so that we can learn from others from all around the world.

Web 2 is a whole new concept for me. After extensive research to find a decipherable definition/ explanation, I finally have a grasp on what it is. Web 2.0 is basically an updated modification of the World Wide Web today. It is a term describing the changes to the internet and the ways in which it is becoming enhanced in areas such as communication, functionality, creativity etc. The term ‘modification’ is used instead of ‘version’, because Web 2.0 is not changing any technical aspects of the World Wide Web; it is merely changing the way that software developers are utilizing it.

Like Web 2, Web 3 is another new concept to me. Again, I had to research extensively to find an appropriate definition. Web 3.0 is a term used to describe the next modification of the World Wide Web, after Web 2.0. Although the ideas and propositions are not yet feasible, they are potentially possible in the future when it has been developed further in the future.

d.)The internet is dangerous and distracting with its many scams and hoaxes. However, there are appropriate precautions that can be taken to prevent the affects that it can have.

Firewalls, anti spyware and ignoring flashing banners can all help to prevent danger and to keep you safe and undistracted.

If precautions are taken, these dangers and distractions can be eliminated/ reduced effectively.

e.)There are many online learning practices that students can learn from. These include mathletics, tutorials etc. These allow students to make sense of online programs and other software effectively in ways that they understand.

Students make sense of online social networks through tutorials and experience. Classes such as IT assist students in making sense of online networks and learning how to use them safely.

There are many sources available to students where they can learn about the internet. These include friends, teachers, school, online tutorials and their own experience. Practice makes perfect.

Questions from a.) to e.

Article posted November 12, 2008 at 11:06 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 628

a.)The definition of a researcher is someone who specialises or who investigates to find information about a certain topic, question or problem. They may research information to write a report or essay on the topic, or they might do it for their own interest.

b.)We use the internet and the ICT as a main research source. It is easy to use and is a convenient way to find what you are searching for.

It has changed quite a lot over the last 15 years. The internet was new and scary for people back then, but now it has become an important part of day-to-day life; especially for teenagers. The internet was mainly used for simple emails, but now you can talk to friends, post videos and buy things without leaving the house.

In the next 5 or 10 years, I think that the internet will be even more advanced. There will be more programs and new tasks that we will be able to perform. I can only imagine the possibilities. I bet that people 15 years ago, never imagined that the things that we can do now, were even possible; I believe that this principle still applies now, for the future.

c.)The internet has definitely changed the way that we learn. Instead of relying heavily upon books, we rely on the internet. A lot more research from around the world is available at our fingertips, and therefore, we can get a lot more information more quickly.

I’m not sure what web 2 is; I haven’t even heard of it. But I am definitely interested to find out.

Again, I’m not sure what web 3 is and again, I haven’t heard of it.

d.)The internet can be a very dangerous place with flashing ads that coax you into clicking onto something and trapping you into their scam, and people pretending to be someone else. If you’re not careful, others can obtain personal information about you and send viruses to your computer.

As for its distraction level, the internet seems to be what most teenagers these days, are spending their time on. It distracts them from reality and they can become sort of detached from reality; living in a virtual world of their own.

e.)The kinds of literacy and learning practices that students are involved in as they interact in online social networks include online help programs and math competitions where they compete against others from around the world.

Students make sense of these online social networks through experience and practice. It is easier to relate and communicate with others their own age, because they use similar language. I think that students are affected by these networks negatively, though not always. I believe that it is a good way to communicate with friends, but if they don’t know who they are talking to, it is then that it becomes dangerous.

Students learn about the internet through using it themselves (experience), television, friends and school.
