John From the Franklin Institute

Article posted May 9, 2009 at 04:36 AM GMT • comment • Reads 513

On May 8, 2009 we had the Franklin Institute employee John that came to Denton Ave. School to teach us about science and the topics that he chose to teach to us about was the three forms of matter solid, liquid, and gas. The Franklin Institute has a fun and interactive way to show students how science is fun to learn. They use experiments to show a hypothesis and how they can be wrong or right. Our experience was educational and fun to see.
The whole presentation was about the three forms of matter. The three forms of matter are solid, liquid, and gas. A solid is a hard object. A liquid is a substance that is like water and it forms the shape of what container it is in. And a gas is vapor and it changes into shape and sizes. The way that you can change the forms of matter from one to another is that a solid melts and it turns into a liquid and then the liquid evaporates and makes the liquid into a gas.
On one of the experiments that John showed us was when he put a balloon in liquid nitrogen. We were supposed to make a hypothesis about what will happen to the balloon when he put it in the liquid nitrogen. My hypothesis was that I thought that the balloon will shrink and all of the molecules will move closer together and the balloon will turn into paper. Molecules are the smallest things that can be matter. When he put his safety goggles and gloves on to put the balloon in and the balloon slowly shrunk because all of the molecules were closer together and that made the balloon too dense so the balloon could not squish. When a regular balloon that is inflated the molecules are farther apart that means the balloon could squish. After that we had to make a scientific observation about what happened to the balloon. My scientific observation is that I noticed the balloon’s molecules shrunk and the balloon turned into something like paper. After he took out the balloon John blew on the balloon and his heat from his mount heated up the balloon and that made the balloon to expand that means to inflate. The reason why that happened is because the balloon was cold because of the liquid nitrogen and when he blew on it made it hot and any thing that is hot expands. The molecules spread apart and that means that the balloon could squish.
Another experiment that John showed us was when he put the bimetallic strip in liquid nitrogen. He asked us to make a hypothesis about what will happen. I made the prediction that the strip will freeze and break. When he put the strip in and then he took it out and I had to make a scientific observation. I looked at the strip and it was bended so I thought since when you put something in a cold thing it shrinks so when he put the strip in the liquid nitrogen it froze and it started to shrink. And that was right. The cold liquid nitrogen did make the bimetallic strip shrink. And then he put his hand on the strip and it started to bend back straight to normal. The reason why the strip bended back to its normal shape is because Johns body heat from his hands made the strip bend back. Heat makes things expand.
When John came to Denton Ave. School it was a fun and educational experience. It was so cool to see how he could teach students about science with experiments. All of his experiments about the three states of matter were creative and it entertained all of the students.

My Earth Day Reflection

Article posted April 30, 2009 at 03:26 AM GMT • comment • Reads 228

On Earth Day we had a great opportunity to be in an Earth Day web cast which was called Earth cast 2009. It was such an honor to be in a web cast that was about saving the earth. It was so interesting to see what other people had to say about what we should do to save our earth. For this web cast we had to make a group. The group that I was in was going to talk about transportation and how driving particular transportation polluted the air. The group was George, Allen, and I. So then my group thought with this topic how could we save the earth? We researched and used some of our on background information to make our small presentation.

Our performance was broken up into three parts. And we each had a little part of the project to present. My presentation was a poem about how some transportation is better than others, George’s presentation was a paragraph about pollution, and Allen’s presentation was a quiz about pollution and gases we should use. We made a talk show presentation. We want people to react to the presentation by thinking that we should always help the environment and make sure that we make good choices about transportation.

My presentation was a poem about transportation. The goal of my topic was to show how bikes are better than cars. The reason why I chose this topic with my group is because bikes don’t run on gas that means that they do not not pollute the air. Bikes just pedal a chain that people pedal with their legs. But cars use gasoline that have really harsh chemicals. That is why we should not use them.

George’s presentation was about polluting the air and what we could do to help. George said that we should get hybrid cars instead of regular cars because hybrid cars do not use those harsh gases. The gas that we use in our cars can lead to health issues. Hybrid cars run on electricity that means that we are not polluting the air.

Allen also had a deed to do. He had to make up a quiz about pollution and what gases are better. He shared information about how LED light and UCLED light are better than Halergin light because they last longer. We also learned that an electric bike is better to use than a motor bike because a electric bike runs on electricity and motor bikes run on gas so we should pick the electric bike.

We wanted people to learn how use transportation that will not hurt the environment. We wanted to tell people what they were doing to the environment and what they can do to help and what we should use instead to not hurt the environment.

When we presented our talk show we had some bad glitches. I miss pronounced some words in my poem. Allen was not loud enough, some of his questions were mixed up the wrong way, and George was not loud or enthusiastic enough. I think our presentation had good parts and parts that ould be better. Some good parts were when the audience asked a question and we all answered great. Some things that I would change that would make our presentation more showcased was putting more information to show that we really wanted people to know that we need to use other transportation that will not hurt our environment. I would have liked to put more fun things to encourage kids to save the Earth.

In conclusion I thought that our presentation was interesting and very important for Earth Day. Transportation is used by everyone around the world. It is important for everyone to learn what kind of transportation is good for the Earth. I hope that our message will be heard and one day our planet will be saved.

The source that we used to complete our project was NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

Mikey from the Franklin Institute Travaling Prigram

Article posted April 1, 2009 at 12:29 AM GMT • comment • Reads 336

We had the opportunity to learn about energy from Mikey from the Franklin Institute traveling program. This program was being held at the gym in Denton Ave. School. It was exciting to see how many different ways that you can show different types of energy. Mikey made my learning experience exciting by using many toys and doing experiments to show us what energy can do. For example, Mikey used a golf ball on a ramp course and when the golf ball reached the end of the course it hit a button, and it made a spark. Mikey took an object and took the flame and put it next to a balloon and the spark caused the balloon to pop because of the fire. It put me in such an au that It made me think like anything could happen in the world if you experiment with different materials with a different accomplishment. Another example is that Mikey used a basketball to teach us about potential energy- when all of the energy is stored, and then once the basketball was dropped, all of the potential energy turned into kinetic energy- meaning that it was released. The most surprising part- when he took a piece of paper that was soaked it many chemicals and lit on fire, and it dissolved into the air, and no ashes when on the floor. It was like magic. That part of the presentation was the most spectacular. I did not know that chemicals could react with fire and disappear. And it was so cool those experiments made us learn about energy like; potential energy is when you hold in the energy. And kinetic energy is when you release the energy that you held in and it also is the motion of waves of energy. Energy can comes in many different forms that are potential and kinetic those are the main parts of energy and lots of all different categories go under kinetic and potential. That presentation was so inspiring maybe someday I will learn enough of energy that I could do those cool and interesting experiments that Mikey introduced us to. What is Happening in the World

Article posted March 13, 2009 at 11:05 PM GMT • comment • Reads 308

Today something tragic happened in Arkansas Little Rock Day Care Center. One of the staff people that work there were going to give some kool aid for the kids. So when the person went to grab the blue kool aid instead of grabbing the kool aid the nurse mistakenly took windshield wiper fluid and it looked the same it was blue so the staff person grabbed it grabbed it and gave it to the children. So March 14, 2009 10 children drank it and a couple of children thought it tasted funny. So then a pharmacologist and a toxicologist from Arkansas Childrens Hospital did a blood test on them and found out it was windshield wiper fluid. They also did a test on the windsheild wiper fluid to. And they said that there was toxic alcohol in there. And the sida facts were that the children could get blind or they could be in a coma. One child was hospitalized. Why do you think that windsheild wiper fluid was there to begin with? The people were involved in this horrible thing was the staff person who gave the windsheild wiper fluid to the children, and the people who tested the product. I hope that the Arkansas Little Rock Day Care is going to either label there fluids so this thing would not happen or they have to find out some other way to give the children the healthy foods and fluids. The cites that I used to give this report was http://www.abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory?id=7075213 and www.mercurynews.com/ci_11904864?source=most_viewed. And Newsday,Saturday,March 14, 2009

Technology

Article posted February 14, 2009 at 07:26 PM GMT • comment • Reads 351

I am standing at the black board showing what I did for this math problem. I am just pointing and explaining what I did. It was so boring. It is not exciting to stand in front of a board and point to my work. All of a sudden, I have a brilliant idea. I am going to tell my teacher about a fun way to jazz up school subjects. I am going to tell her to use interesting technology to make school even more fun. But first I had to research different kinds of technologies. I found three different ones: skpe, podcasting, and wiki's. And I had to tell my teacher what kinds of subjects to use and which technology should go with witch subject. Also I had to describe what each technology is and how to use it.
I got started on my script and I wrote about how we have a lot of subjects in school that are really boring. I also have found a way to make students be more excited to learn.

First, I would like introduce a website called skpe. Skpe is a fun way to interact with people around the world. It is going to be really fun for the students to use Skype. The students just have to get to the skpe website and connect with a person and get a web camera and it is ready to go. You can see the person who you are talking to, and they can see you. You can also hear them. The subject that would be good for us to use this technology with is learning about a certain part the world and the different cultures and languages. In that case we would connect from someone from that part of the world that we are studying about.

The next technology we can you is podcasting. Podcasting is a fun way to be confident in what you are saying and a to be more fluent in speaking. All that we need for podcasting is a recorder and a script. The students should find a topic to write about then write a script for it. The subject that we can use it for is math or reading. You can podcast about a math problem answer or a reading vocabulary word. You can also make up a problem and record it. And when you are done you can put all the things that you have recorded online to share with everyone.

The last technology is wiki. A wiki is very helpful to all students and teachers. A wiki is a website that you make and it has a title or a subject. The subject can be math, social studies, or anything else you are learning in school. First, you gather data and do research on the subject or topic. Then, you make a website and put in all of the information about the subject. Then you just tell your students to watch the wiki grow with projects. The subject that we can use this for is social studies. We can make a wiki that relates to social studies and we can make a project about the Native Americans or about The War of 1812.
Now I have told you many ways that we can change how students think of school subjects with technology. It is going to be so much fun if I can see my idea in action. I know this will encourage students to look forward to school. Using technology will improve my skills because it will help me find information for my research in different subjects. Also, technology will connect me with other students so my presentation skills will improve.

I adore cake! It is one of my favorite desserts. My favorite part is the icing. It is so creamy and indulging. The flavor of cake I like the best is vinnila or strawberry. For my birthday cake 2 years ago I tried a different flavor it was choclate pudding and buttercream in the middle. And for my birthday this year I got rasberry. That was so good . I will never stop eating cake.

Winter Recess, Please

Article posted February 1, 2009 at 03:14 AM GMT • comment • Reads 216

Dear Principal Haley,
As a student in Denton Avenue for six years, I have never experienced going out in the snow when it is recess in winter. I think there are a lot of good reasons that the students should be allowed to go outside during recess when it snows. Letting the children go outside during recess will make Denton Avenue School a happier place to learn and play.
There are many reasons why you should allow the students of Denton Avenue to have recess when it snows. First, it is important to let kids go outside during recess so they can exercise. We are in our classrooms all day and we should have a chance to go outside to run, and jump and stretch our muscles. Just like we are allowed to go out during the fall, spring and the summer, we should go outside in the winter when it snows because there is nothing different, just snow that will not hurt anyone.
Second, staying inside in not a good idea. During the wintertime many children have colds that they can spread to each other if they stay inside. If we can go outside, it will stop the spread of germs from one person to another. If we sit in the classroom playing board games and cards like we do when it snows, we will spread cold germs that way. I remember seeing students sneeze when they are using the computer and they don’t go to the sink to was their hands or use a tissue. If we go outside, we will be in fresh air and these germs will not be left there for the next student to catch.

Also, if we stay indoors for recess, we will not be able to see our friends from other classes. We will have to be with our classmates for the whole day and can’t make friends with children from other classes. Next, if we don’t go outside for recess and we stay in our classrooms we will get bored quickly. Staying in one room for most of the day will make the children tired. Then, we it is time to learn we will not want to pay attention to the teacher. We need to go to different environments during the day to keep us motivated.

Going outdoors during recess is a great brain exercise. The students will be able to look at the pretty snow falling from the sky and make good memories from it. We will be able to write poems and stories about the pretty scenes we see and draw the scenes too.

Even though it is snowing, the weather will be nice. Winter recess is a very good idea. Going outside will let us do things that we can't do indoors. We should be let outside because to be a growing healthy child you need to be active and it is also good to be with all of your friends. Snow is special, and we should be allowed to play in it for recess.
I hope that I can experience being outside in the snow during recess as least one time before I graduate from Denton.
