Awesome Test Blog

We have three 6th grade Science classes and two 8th grade Science classes blogging here from the Pacific Northwest in Chimacum, WA! Sixth graders are learning a bit about Mt Saint Helens, environmental science through fresh water ecology, and physical science this year. Eighth graders are learning about life science this year. Please join us as we learn Science by exploring our world.

Mitosis and Meiosis

I wrote the following compare and contrast analysis using Up-Goer 5, which only lets you write using the 1,000 most used words. It was very challenging! Normally I wouldn't be this brief and I try not to use the word "stuff" in Science explanations.

Here it is:
Cells become two cells by making another set that is just like the first cell. In five steps all cells in our body will make more of themselves. After the cell has made two sets of everything it needs the cell will turn into two cells. One cell will become two cells at the end of step five.

There are different cells that make new people. Those cells only have half of the stuff that normal cells do. The cells with half the stuff of normal cells do become two cells like normal cells in the second part. In the first part the cells with half the stuff get half of the stuff normal cells get. This allows for babies that are not like their parents. Because of those cells with half the stuff people don't come out like their parents.

Mitosis

Article posted February 23, 2013 at 03:50 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 58

Prophase

In prophase, the chromatin condenses into discrete chromosomes. The nuclear envelope breaks down and spindles form at opposite "poles" of the cell.

Metaphase

In metaphase, the chromosomes are aligned at the metaphase plate (a plane that is equally distant from the two spindle poles).

Anaphase

In anaphase, the paired chromosomes (sister chromatids) move to opposite ends of the cell.

Telophase

In this last stage, the chromosomes are cordoned off in distinct new nuclei in the emerging daughter cells. Cytokinesis is also occurring at this time.

At the end of mitosis, two distinct cells with identical genetic material are produced.

My Passions

My passion is education. I love learning and I think Science is the coolest subject to learn and teach. I also think we can do school a lot better than we do right now. It takes a few dedicated teachers and students and parents and administrators to change education. Let's do it!
