CHEESE! FOR EVERYONE!

6th Per 4
We have three 6th grade Science classes and two 8th grade Science classes blogging here from the Pacific Northwest in Chimacum, WA! Sixth graders are learning a bit about Mt Saint Helens, environmental science through fresh water ecology, and physical science this year. Eighth graders are learning about life science this year. Please join us as we learn Science by exploring our world.

water pollution PSA

Article posted March 20, 2013 at 06:15 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 220

PSA

Water pollution is VERY SERIOUS; water pollution is the cause of the huge amount of dead marine life in every type of body of water. Water pollution not only harms marine life but harms animals and humans. Water pollution is a very bad thing and I think everyone should know the full effects of it. I’m going to inform you about what water pollution is and the effects of it in the next paragraph.

Water pollution is when materials, or organisms get into bodies of water and harm or kill the wildlife in or around the water. Water pollution is broken up into seven types all being very harmful to wildlife, and the environment. The seven types being surface water pollution, ground water pollution, microbiological water pollution, chemical water pollution, oxygen depletion water pollution, nutrient water pollution, and suspended water pollution.

The effects of water pollution is most damaging to marine life, but it is also very damaging to animals, us humans, and even the environment. Water pollution also damages us economically. One way water pollution affects us is water pollution poisons fish. That poison goes to animals that eat the fish. Then we eat the animals, getting the poison inside our body harming us. Another way water pollution affects us is by being hard and expensive to clean. Businesses have to pay a lot of money cleaning and removing all of the pollutants out of water, which affect our economy.

You might be thinking already that “Oh no I don’t want those things to happen, is there any way to stop it.” Yes, there are ways to stop, and treat water pollution. To treat water pollution by industrial means, like using septic tanks, or using sewage tanks. There are also two other means of cleaning water pollution, one of which is denitrification, which is an ecological approach to water treatment. There is also ozone wastewater treatment, which oxidizes metals and kills bacteria in polluted water. And to prevent water pollution YOU, yes YOU can turn off faucets, and other things to conserve water, and not increase the amount of wastewater that needs treatment (a good website is 100 Ways to Conserve water). You cannot put garbage down things like toilets or other drains, doing that will help decrease clogs caused by the things thrown down a drain. Doing these things help treat and prevent water pollution, which is a good thing.

I have talked about the importance of stopping water pollution in a few paragraphs. Please help yourself and not do anything that pollutes water, we only have one planet to live on, you might as well help keep this planet livable.

6th EMM lesson 13

Article posted February 14, 2013 at 08:20 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 424

During energy, machines, and motion lesson 13 we got to find out how to lift a sled filled with washers with an old motor,a lever,a pegboard assembly, and some string.

Q1.What happened to the effort force, effort distance, and the amount of work you did to raise the sled .1m when you used a lever? (Explain what happened as you got farther from the fulcrum or pivot point.)

A1.The further away I got from the fulcrum the effort force decreased, the effort distance decreased and the work decreased.

Q2.What do simple machines do to make our lives easier and how do they do it?

A2.Simple machines reduce the amount of work we have to do to move an object by using techniques that less us move the distance we want to but with less work done.

Q3.Explain what happened when you used a lever to get your motor to lift the heavy sled.

A3.My group tried to move the lever by puting a string on the motor, putting the string through the pegboard and attaching it to the lever. The team that lifted the sled with the motor put the motor below the lever which worked.

6th EMM Lesson 10

Article posted January 22, 2013 at 07:53 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 498

1.The energy the falling washers produce go to the lightbulb and turn it on
2.The lightbulb will get brighter and brighter the more washers you add
3. 4 washers made a little light
5 washers made a little more light
6 washers made it bright
7 washers made it very bright

4.The more weight that falls, the more energy it produces.
5.The energy comes from the friction acting on the motor.
6.
Number of weight of distance work done
washers washers washers fell by gravity
4 1.2(n) 10(m) 12
5 1.5(n) 10(m) 15
6 1.8(n) 10(m) 18
7 2.1(n) 10(m) 21

7.I saw that the work increases by three joules every time a washer was added
8.I could change the distance the washers fall to affect the lightbulb
9.
A.collect how much work is being done
B.time how long it takes for the washers to hit the floor
C.divide the work you collected by the time it takes for the washers to hit the floor
D.repeat steps 1-3 for any different amount of washers
10.yes you can charge the battery with the motor and falling washers, because the battery stores the same energy the motor and falling washers produce.

1.A watt is basically power,to get power you divide work(N-M)by time.
2.It means it uses 100 joules of energy each second.
3.750 watts of power.
4.Yes it did matter because one battery only has 1.2 volts which is not enough power to lift 3 washers but three batteries have 4.25 volts which can 3 washers.
5.The amount of power going to the motor increased.
6.For me only three batteries lifted anything so i dont have a line graph.
7.I could add more batteries.
8.Yes the motor used all 4.25 volts from the batteries.

Scientific work=Force in newtons times distance in meters.while

Daily work=How much labor a person is doing.

Difference:There is a big difference between scientific work, and daily work

like how if you push a wall someone will think your doing daily work but you are doing no work at all.
