We have three 6th grade Science classes and two 8th grade Science classes blogging here from the Pacific Northwest in Chimacum, WA! Sixth graders are learning a bit about Mt Saint Helens, environmental science through fresh water ecology, and physical science this year. Eighth graders are learning about life science this year. Please join us as we learn Science by exploring our world.

.

This section is mainly about what is fresh water pollution and what we can do to help. We got most of our information from the water web quest site.

WHAT IS FRESH WATER

             POLLUTION?

Water pollution is when you dump waste, garbage, radioactive waste, and sewer sludge in the water and that can really harm the animals and even us.

Some sources of water pollution are from oil spills and drainage pipes and even people in our community dropping pollutants in to our water supply.

There are some consequences of water pollution such as hurting animals, getting in our water supply, and blue baby syndrome.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP IMPROVE

     THE WATER QUALITY WHEN IT’S

              POLLUTED?

We can tell people in the community to recycle and properly dispose of their garbage. By doing that they will not dump it in the water.

We can take actions to help clean up our planet. Such as picking up waste, pick up your own litter, and recycle. Things like that can help with a lot of the fresh water pollution.

                 NITRATE INFO

High nitrate levels can result in a reaction of oxygen transport in the blood stream. Infants of the age of 4 months and under lack the enzyme to correct this condition. Fatalities from methemoglobinema (blue baby syndrome) occur infrequently and are most common in rural areas.

A considerable level of nitrates in drinking water is a maximum contaminated level (MCL) of 10 mg/L (as nitrogen) for nitrate in drinking water.

        WHAT CAN BE DONE TO

       PREVENT NITRATES FROM

     ENTERING OUR WATER SUPPL?

Tile drainage systems could be placed deeper into the soil thereby reducing the chance that nitrate will be carried into them.

WHAT ARE POINT AND NONPOINT

    SOURSES AND WHAT ARE THE

  DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE 2?

Point is when you can see the source of the pollution. Non-point is when you can’t see the sources of the pollution. Point is easier to

my awesome adventure at cispus

Article posted October 1, 2009 at 04:41 AM GMT • comment (7) • Reads 2013

I liked cispus because I think it gives spirit because everybody thought it was going to be bad because of all of the homework I thought it was still going to be good because of all the friends you didn't have you could get some new ones.

My most favorite activitie at cispus was the ponds hike. I loved the food there.
