Awesome Cispus

We have three 6th grade Science classes and two 8th grade Science classes blogging here from the Pacific Northwest in Chimacum, WA! Sixth graders are learning a bit about Mt Saint Helens, environmental science through fresh water ecology, and physical science this year. Eighth graders are learning about life science this year. Please join us as we learn Science by exploring our world.

This week I experimented on how will cockroaches react in different environments. The first one is sand, second is salt, and third is metal. The conclusion was that it tried to escape the box no matter the environment it was in. Later I found out that it likes dark concealed space where it can not be found by predators.

Odyssey is a school field trip that is at Lake Cresent Washington for 5 days. I thought it was very enjoyable especially going to the Sol Duc spring. Another part that was cool was going to the Hoh Rainforest because it was never influenced by humans. Over all I think Odyssey was pretty fun.

Why do people come out different? Well it' because of meiosis. Meiosis is when a cell makes an exact copy of it self. When the cell is at about the 3 stage of meiosis the chromosome shuffles it's DNA resulting in different looks personality and traits. Meiosis is an important part in life because it creates diversity.

Splitting Up

Article posted February 9, 2012 at 08:05 PM GMT • comment • Reads 781

During the last few weeks my fellow classmates and I have been learning about cells. One of the thing we learned is mitosis. Mitosis is when a cell splits into two. When the eukaryotic cell split it's chromosomes in its neucleus into two identical sets into separate neuclei. The next stage is called
cytokinesis it's when the components of the cell split into two cells containing nearly the same amount of cell components, then eventually those two diploid cells will mature into cells.Mitosis is a process which ocurrs very quickly. If there is any error during mitosis the cell my die or mutate into a type of cancer.

Bacteria Every Where!!!

Article posted February 6, 2012 at 08:27 PM GMT • comment (3) • Reads 822

My classmate and I did an experiment on bacteria. Our question was which sample had the most bacteria? Our sample with the most bacteria was the soil. My evedence was that there was some slimy liquid and it looked like it originated from the bacteria zone. We actualy collected samples from the lunch room, bath room, key board and playground soil and soil came out on top. After we collected the sample we then put it in the incubator and grew the bacteria. After we grew the bacteria we then do not open it because the bacteria could contaminate the room. So in our experiment the soil was has the most bacteria I think it has the most most bacteria because people walk over the soil and their shoe carries bacteria.

Mini pond of Science

Article posted January 26, 2012 at 07:36 PM GMT • comment • Reads 3662

In our exploration of the microscopic world I found some living organism in mini pond. There where only two organisms that appeared in in my microscope frequently those two organism were paramecium and amoeba. Paramecium and ameoba are single celled organism that means it can survive on its own with out the help of other cells. Multicellular organisms can't survive on it's own it needs other cells to support it. For example an elodia leaf is comprised of multiple cells and those cells depend on one another to survive.
