Density Delemma

We did a lab where we had to find out which out of five crowns were real, so as we did our research we found out that the density of a solid gold crown is 19.3 g/cm3. For the first crown we got the density was10.7 g/cm3, the second was, 2.86g/cm3, the third was.77g/cm3, the fourth crown was 19.3 G/CM3, and the fifth was 13.7g/cm3. As you can see crown number 4 is the true gold crown. The other crowns included substances such as silver, aluminum, steel, gold, and mercury etc.

Temperature and density

We did a small lab on how temperature affects density and we came up with when hot water is on top and cold is on the bottom they stay the same but when they are reversed the two switch places.

Floating Crayons

We did a lab known as the Floating Crayons Lab. In this lab we took five crayons(white, black, blue, green, and red), then we took a 250 ml beaker and added salt untill we had a all five crayons afloat. Then we took our results and graphed them into a graph. Our highest data point was five tsp of salt and that was green and our lowest one was two tsp of salt and that was blue.

Wethering and erosion

Weathering is the process that grinds down the features of on object such as a rock.

There are two types of weathering. The first type is Mechanical Weathering and it causes the surface of a rock to be ground down by ABRASION, broken up by ICE WEDGING an EXFOLIATION.

Abrasion- causes the surface of a rock to be ground by other weathered materials.

Ice wedging- happens when permafrost or ice melts allowing it to seep into the rock and then freezing again, The rock breaks because as the water freezes it expands.

Exfoliation- is caused when different amounts of pressure and heat is applied to it.

A way to prevent weathering or slow it down is if you live in a cool climate it is better to use granite and if you leave in a hotter more humid climate use any thing other than granite.




Erosion is the movement of the weathered material such as sand.

Ways that erosion happens is due to farmers they will till their fields allowing water to run directly downwards in stead of going around their fields in a circular way. An other cause is if you make a trail and then it rains it erodes causing there to be less soil.

A way to prevent this from happening would be to plant crops in narrow strips to prevent wind erosion from happening or you could plant marram grass which is found on beaches to slow the erosion of sand.

Heat transfer

Heat is transfered by an object first becoming heated but in order for it to become heated the molecules in the object starts to heat up causing them to go into a spasm of moving a lot and that in returns causes more and more molecules to go into a spasm of movement. But when the object cools the molecules stop moving.

Heat can be transfered from one object to another by allowing the object to come into contact with the first but it only allows part of the heat to be transfered and not all of it. Also there are many more factors that involve heat transfer some that you yourself have to find because I have told you the basic part of heat transfer.

Biome Commercial

Our biome commercial was about the savanna. With Jacob as the spokesperson and Michael as the filmer I was left to do the research and make the cue cards. We had found out that the savanna biome is in danger of several animals going to go extinct because of pochers and wild fires. We also found out that the savanna biome is moderately hot and gets 20-50 in. of rain fall per year.

For our food chain we found out that the grass is at the bottom and then it is the giraffe, zebra, rhino,gazelle, and all the other plant animals. Then it was the cheetah, the lion, the heyena,and any other anmals that eat meat.

Vinegar Baking Soda Lab

In science so far we have done one lab and that is the vinegar and baking soda reaction lab.

Our problem was How does the amount of baking soda that we put in the the test tube affect the size of the Balloon?

Our hypothesis was: As the amount of baking soda increases the size of the balloon will decrease because as the amount of baking soda that goes into forcing the baking soda up and the gases to rise.

Materials:
Three test tubes
Test tube holder
Balloon
Baking Soda
Vinegar
50ml Beaker
250 ml Beaker
Funnel
Safety goggles
A wooden stick from a sweet treat

Steps:
1. Get materials
2. Set materials up
3. Fill test tube up with one more cm each time
5. put 5ml of vinegar in balloon
5. Put balloon and vinegar on test tube
6. Lift the balloon up straight with the test tube
7. Watch Expirement
8. Measure the circumfrence
9. Repeat steps 3-8 adding one cm of baking soda each time
10. Take data and graph
11. Write conclusion

Conclusion:
When I changed the amount of baking soda the size of the balloon barely increased because the the more there was baking soda the vinegar could barley react enough to get the balloon to increase in size a lot. My prediction was wrong because i said that the size of the balloon would decrease in size because there wasn't enough vinegar to cause a huge reaction. our highest data data point was 18 cm and our lowest was 15 cm. A problem that we had was that some teams got different data like it went up then suddenly dropped. Questions for further testing would be What would happen if we did the lab with baking soda, baking powder and vinegar.

Global warming

Our class watch a movie with Al Gore. In this movie Al Gore tells about the affects of Global Warming. Due to Global Warming our polar ice capes are melting or as Al gore calls them the canaries. What he means about canaries is that if you find them dead in a coal mine that you work at you want to get out of there fast or else you will die like those poor canaries. Al Gore also said that if the western part of Antartica were to melt the sea level would raise twenty feet.

Plant Update

We have just started our second lab. Our group is doing humidity. We put one plant in a room that has high humidity and the other plant is in the same room as that everyone has theirs in. Today one of or plants grew half of a centimeter and the other didn't grow at all. Also the room with the high humidity had at least a thirty percent more than yesterday.
