Postcard To My 12th Grade Self

[Editor's Note: My 2006-2007 students have just graduated 5th grade. They have been in school for about six years. In another six years they will be a senior in high school. Believe it or not, they are about half way through their public schooling life!
Below is a postcard they wrote to their "12th grade self." I will mail it to them in June 2013!]

Multi-tasking Mom

Does your mom know how to multitask? Well she should! Moms should know how to multitask!
The first thing moms should know when multitasking is to cook! Whenever it is my birthday my mom makes me a cake and it tastes so good. My favorite kind of cake is vanilla cake with chocolate frosting or ice cream.
The second thing moms should know when multitasking is that they should be funny. My mom is really funny because she always sings, especially when my friends are in the car or a song comes on that she knows. Once when Margo was in the car a song came on that my mom knew so she just started to sing!
The last thing moms should know when multitasking is to be smart! My mom is really so smart because if she wasn’t then she would not be a teacher, and she would not be able to get dressed in the morning. My mom teaches at Edgewood and everyone loves her there because she is so funny and smart.
If you want to know why a mom should multitask, well, she is your mom and she will be your mom for life!

The PlayFair Alliance thinks that kids in China are being put to work in factories for selling stuff like hats, bags, and other goods for the 2008 Olympics. They have found information about the child labor being used. "Respect and dignity are part of the Olympic charter," said a spokesman. The PlayFair Alliance said that, in the future, it wants child labor controls to be part of the conditions for being allowed to host the sporting spectacular.
I feel so bad for those kids that had to make all that stuff without anyone knowing for a long time. I hope the person that made those kids make all that stuff goes to jail for a very long time!

26 years old Pairs Hilton was sentenced to jail for 45 days, but because of her "GOOD" behavior her sentence was cut down to 23! Instead of a normal jail cell she is being put in a police and celebrity jail cell. She will have an hour of cell phone and TV and be able to take a shower!
That is really not fair. The police found her driving without the lights on at night. Then she was released and told not to drive at all. But that was followed by a drink and driving charge in January. PAris will start prison in June. She will start on the 5th of June.
I think this is not fair at all because:
1. Just because she is a celebrity doesn’t mean that she should get special treatment. She broke the law just like everyone else.
2. Other criminals don’t get to watch TV everyday or talk on the phone or take a shower!
And, lastly, I think she should keep the 45 days of jail time because she still broke the law just like everyone else!

9 year old Jesse Courtney found out he had two spiders in his ears! One day he noticed a faint popping noise in his ear, and he told his mom. When it started to ache he wanted to visit a doctor. The doctor could spot something deep inside his ear. The doctor washed his ear out and found out that there were two spiders in his ear, one living and one dead. By everyone’s surprise, the dead spider popped out and then the live one. After all that Jesse said that they were walking on the eardrum. As a souvenir, he brought them to school (the spiders were both now dead) to show his friends!
How gross! I would flip if I found out I had two spiders in my ear (one alive and one dead)! Just the thought of it creeps me out! I hope Jesse is alright for the spider incident. Oh, yeah, and if my friend had two spiders in her ear I would feel really bad. I am so glad I don’t have spiders in my ears!
