[Editor's Note: My 2006-2007 students have just graduated 5th grade. They have been in school for about six years. In another six years they will be a senior in high school. Believe it or not, they are about half way through their public schooling life!
Below is a postcard they wrote to their "12th grade self." I will mail it to them in June 2013!]

Do you play a sport? If so, you already know how great they can be! If not, you really should find out. Every one should sign up for sports!
First of all, it’s fun and healthy. Everyone has fun and they get a work out while they do it. I always have fun at my games, even if we loose! After my games I’m always tired and my muscles are sore.
Secondly, you can meet new friends. When you play most sports you’re on a team. When you’re on a team you meet lots of new people. Having to work together really pushes every one together. I always make new friends with people on my team.
Lastly, it gives kids a chance to get involved in something. Some kids can really get involved in sports, especially kids who don’t really get involved in school. I know a lot of kids who do much better in sports than in school.
So if you want to have fun, get involved, and develop a healthy body you should play a sport. They’re great! So sign up for a sport and have an awesome time now!

RUSSIAN SPY MURDER SUSPECT NAMED

Police Chiefs have named a Mr. Andrei Lugovoi as the man who poisoned ex-spy, Mr. Litvinenko with the chemical Polonium 210 last November. Andrei Lugovoi used to work for Russia’s Spy agency the KGB. The bad news is that Mr. Lugovoi lives in Russia, and can not be tried until he returns to the UK.
It is really good that they found Mr. Litvinenko’s killer, but it stinks that he can’t be charged until he returns to the UK. It makes me mad that he can just escape.

9 year-old Jesse Courtney complained about a faint popping in his ear. When it started to hurt, he decided to go to a doctor. He thought he could see something so he washed out his ear. To their surprise, two spiders, one dead and one alive popped out! Then, he brought them to school to show all his friends!
That is disgusting!!! How’d spiders get into someone’s ear anyway? And why would you want to show your friends?

Denver Dispatch v. United States 2007
Docket Number 93-8000
The Story:
At a lab near Boulder Colorado the government was producing top secret, dangerous biological weapons. A local news paper, the Denver Dispatch, found out what was happening. It was planned to be a five part story but as soon as the first was published, they were pulled into court.
The lawyers for the government argued:
The lawyers for the government argued that they can not allow this secret information to be published. They said that “National Security” is more important than freedom of the press since we are at war. “The less the public knows, the less our enemies know.”
The lawyers for the Denver Dispatch argued:
The lawyers for the Denver Dispatch argued that they had First Amendment rights. They said they weren’t trying to hurt the nation, just inform and prepare the public.
Justice Velleu voted in favor of the Denver Dispatch.
He wrote:
The Denver Dispatch should be allowed to publish and the government has no right to stop it. The First Amendment clearly states that “Congress shall make no law… abridging freedom… of the press…” It is true that in the past there have been exceptions in times of war, but there is no declared war so there should be no exceptions. There is no clear and present danger. As Justice Black stated “The “National Security” is broad and unclear. It is wrong to put “National Security” over the First Amendment. Also Justice Brennan said “… Under the First Amendment there can be no blocking freedom of the press based on educated guesses that some danger might come about.” There for, the Denver Dispatch should be allowed to publish.

MAN DODGES CROCS TO SWIM TO AMAZON

Martin Strel from Slovenia swam the whole 3,272 miles of the Amazon River in 66 days, making him the first man to swim the Amazon! It was a dangerous trip. He battled piranhas, crocodiles, Bull sharks, Anaconda snakes and exhaustion just to make it. Strel has also swum the Mississippi, the Danube, and the Yangtze.
I think Martin Strel must have been really determined to swim all those rivers. It also must have been scary to fight all those creatures. He must have been really tired after that swim!

The DARE program was great! I’ve learned all about tobacco, drugs, and alcohol and how to avoid it. I’ve learned all about the types of peer pressure.
I’ve learned a lot of things from DARE. I wouldn’t take cigarettes because there are 200 known poisons in it and over 40,000 people die from it a year. Also, I could get health problems. Marijuana is worse! I could get health problems that affect my body and mind. It’s even illegal in the U.S. I could get addicted to both of them! I wouldn’t drink alcohol untill I’m 21, and then I wouldn’t drink too much because it could kill me. I’ve also learned about making good friends and decisions.
In conclusion, I’ve learned how to make good decisions and friends. Also why to avoid tobacco and other drugs and not to drink alcohol until I’m 21.
So I pledge to not take tobacco and other drugs. I will not drink alcohol until I’m 21, and then I will drink responsibly.
[Editor's note: This year millions of school children around the world will benefit from D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education), the highly acclaimed program that gives kids the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence. D.A.R.E. was founded in 1983 in Los Angeles and has proven so successful that it is now being implemented in 75 percent of our nation's school districts and in more than 43 countries around the world. D.A.R.E. is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children from kindergarten through 12th grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives. We thank Officer DiRuzza for leading us this year! To read more about DARE go HERE.]
