[Editor's Note: My 2006-2007 students have just graduated 5th grade. They have been in school for about six years. In another six years they will be a senior in high school. Believe it or not, they are about half way through their public schooling life!
Below is a postcard they wrote to their "12th grade self." I will mail it to them in June 2013!]

What did you do this spring? I can see people saying soccer. I like soccer, too, but I like baseball even more. Kids should play in little league.
First of all, it is fun. I’ve hit a few triples and it is really fun just making solid contact and running the bases. Fielding also gives you great joy.
Secondly, it gives you a workout. I know it gives you a workout because I’m defiantly in shape because of baseball. Plus it works your muscles so you can get buff.
Most importantly, you make new friends. When I was on my Little League team I made friends with 11 new people. The all have different names and go to different schools like Chatsworth, Belows, Central, and Murray.
If you want to have fun, get a workout, and make new friends then you should sign up for Little League. Go sign up for Little League today!

The fifth Harry Potter, "Order of the Phoenix," is finally coming out! It will premier in Japan on June 27th.
I hope Harry Potter will be a good movie. I am defiantly going to see it. I wonder if anybody important is going to die. I hope Serious Black doesn’t die. He is my favorite character. I hear that Harry Potter is going to die in the last movie. Also I read the 6th book and Dumbledore dies in that one.

Spiders were found in BOY'S EAR!

Spiders were found in a boy’s ear. At first he heard tapping in his ear than it started to bother him so he went to the doctor. The doctor washed the boy’s ear and two spiders came out of his ear. One was dead and one was alive. He got to keep both of them, and when the live one died he brought the spiders to school.
I think this is crazy. I can't believe the kid lived. I either would have died from fright or if they bit me. I wonder why the spiders chose the boys ear out of all places to live. I wonder if the boy got any brain damage. How did the spiders fit in his ear?

The Denver Dispatch v. the United States (2007)
Docket Number 93-8000
The story: The Denver Dispatch published one of five articles about secret biological warfare information. The government stopped the articles the day it was published. On that same day the Denver Dispatch went to court to argue that it was unconstitutional to stop the articles. They appealed to the Supreme Court.
Denver Dispatch Arguments: The Denver Dispatch said this is ripping apart the 1st Amendment and that the 1st Amendment was more important than national security. Also it has been 2 months and no terrorists have attacked. The information was already public, according to the Denver Dispatch.
Government’s Arguments: The government said that terrorists might attack and that national security is more important than the 1st Amendment. Also the government says that they were using the weapons for defensive reasons. The Government also quotes from Oliver Wendell Holmes, “that no matter how much you believe in the 1st Amendment you would not scream fire in a crowded movie theater.” Oliver Wendell Holmes means that it all depends on the time and place you say something. The government believes that the Denver Dispatch published the article at the wrong time and place.
Justice Noah voted in favor of the Denver Dispatch. He felt the Denver Dispatch had a stronger argument. The government only said possibilities like this could or might happen but nothing official like saying this will happen. In the same way, the Denver Dispatch said it is ripping up the 1st Amendment but it did not say it might be ripping up the 1st Amendment. Therefore, he ruled against the government and allowed the Denver Dispatch to publish the rest of their articles.
[Editor's note: "The Constitution Works" is a role-playing exercise that gives students a chance to learn about the United States Constitution and government. The students role play a hypothetical court case called Denver Dispatch v. United States. Students take on roles as a lawyer or Supreme Court Justice. They think about what is more important: the freedom of the newspaper to print what it wants OR the government's duty to protect our nation's security.]

Thousands of people live near a volcano in Ecuador are in danger of dieing or losing their houses. In the schools kids are getting taught to protect themselves from a volcano. People aren’t moving because they say they have no where to move. Also, one of their villagers said that he wasn’t scared because they knew the volcano would tell them before it erupts so they could run and be prepared.
I think that those villagers are crazy. They are actually staying, and I’m pretty sure they could move in with their relatives. I hope they live to tell the tale.

I’ve learned tons of facts about alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana. I’m going to make healthy choices by not taking drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes.
I have learned that drugs give you diseases, addict you, give you cancer, and can kill you. I have also learned that cigarettes can give you diseases, cancer, yellow teeth, addict you, and kill you. I learned that beer is bad for you because it goes directly in your blood stream so it isn’t safe to take pills with it. And if you drink too much you can puke and possibly die. It is very important to know this because it will help me make healthy decisions.
I have learned that taking drugs, cigarettes and alcohol is unhealthy and could damage you. Therefore, I will never take them.
I pledge that I will never take cigarettes, drugs, and beer.
[Editor's note: This year millions of school children around the world will benefit from D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education), the highly acclaimed program that gives kids the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence. D.A.R.E. was founded in 1983 in Los Angeles and has proven so successful that it is now being implemented in 75 percent of our nation's school districts and in more than 43 countries around the world. D.A.R.E. is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children from kindergarten through 12th grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives. We thank Officer DiRuzza for leading us this year! To read more about DARE go HERE.]
