[Editor's Note: My 2006-2007 students have just graduated 5th grade. They have been in school for about six years. In another six years they will be a senior in high school. Believe it or not, they are about half way through their public schooling life!

Below is a postcard they wrote to their "12th grade self." I will mail it to them in June 2013!]

Lip Gloss
Original lyrics by Lil Mama

Crew:
Lil Mama: Sydney
Mom: Destiny
Singers: Stephanie, Sydney, Destiny, Solange, Jaileen, Jackie, Margo, Amanda

Everyone:
What’s wrong?

Lil Mama:
Pffts!
I just want to be apart of the cool crowd
I just feel like I don’t have what it takes

Everyone:
We have something here for you.
This lip gloss worked for us!

Lil' Mama (Spoken):
I gotta ask em'-
cause if I don't
Its poppin’ (4x)
I don't know
Let’s go
What u know bout me,
what u,
what u know bout me
What u know bout me,
what u know.

They say my lip gloss is cool,
my lip gloss be poppin
I’m standing at my locker,
and all the boys keep stoppin

what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know bout me
what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know

They say my lip gloss be poppin,
my lip gloss is cool
all the boys keep jockin,
they chase me after school
after skoool

mac-mac, loreal,
yep cuz I’m worth it
love the way I puts it on
so perfect
wipe the corners of my mouth
so I work it
when I walk down the hallway
they can’t say nuthin

oh, oh, oh,
my lips so lucious
the way I spice it up
with the mac-mac brushes
loreal got them
want watermelon crushes
that's probably the reason
all these boys got crushes

what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know bout me
what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know

They say my lip gloss is cool,
my lip gloss be poppin
I'm standin at my locker,
and all the boys keep stoppin

what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know bout me
what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know

They say my lip gloss is poppin,
my lip gloss is cool
all the boys keep jockin,
they chase me after school

when it’s time for lunch,
my lips still rock
Lil Mama melon with the hot pink top
cherry, vanilla,
flavors is a virtual thing
they lovin,
lip gloss universal

the boys really like it,
the girls don’t speak,
they rollin' they eyes,
they lip gloss cheap

it ain’t my fault,
but I can upgrade you
show you how to use nice things
with nice flavors

what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know bout me
what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know

They say my lip gloss is cool
my lip gloss be poppin
I’m standing at my locker
and all the boys keep stoppin

what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know bout me
what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know

They say my lip gloss is poppin, my lip gloss is cool
all the boys keep jockin,
they chase me after school

cuz my lip gloss is poppin
(it`s poppin 4x)

cuz my lip gloss is poppin
(it`s poppin 4x)

sittin in 8th period,
thought I was in trouble
Dean called me on the loud speaker,
on the double I stepped in the office
like,
Yes Ms. McClarkson?
she's like,
Girl ran out of my lip gloss.
Write down where you get yours from
cuz I must admit that bubble gum,
is poppin (3x)
she ain’t frontin'

and uh ...
I be lovin' it,
I be,
I be lovin' it
uh ...
I be usin' it,
I be,
I be usin' it
I ...
I be rubbin' it,
I be,
I be rubbin' it
on my lips, my lips
uh...
my lip gloss

what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know bout me
what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know

They say my lip gloss is cool,
my lip gloss be poppin'
I’m standing at my locker,
and all the boys keep stoppin'

what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know bout me
what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know

They say my lip gloss is poppin,
my lip gloss is cool
all the boys keep jockin,
they chase me after school

Paris' jail sentence cut in half

Article posted May 22, 2007 at 05:19 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 481

Paris Hilton will now spend only 23 days in prison after driving a car when she wasn't supposed to.
She was originally sentenced to 45 days in jail but it's been cut because of her "good behavior."
She was not even supposed to be on the road because early in January she was drunk driving. This time, since she disobeyed the sentence, she is going to jail. They say that Paris is not going to be in a regular prison cell.

Paris should not be let out of jail. She is irresponsible, self-centered, selfish, and careless for people in need. The only reason how she stared her career is because her father owns a multi-million dollar hotel business.

The Constitution Works! Brief and Oral Arguement for the Denver Dispatch

Article posted May 11, 2007 at 07:19 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 417

May it please the court: My name is Amanda. As a lawyer for the Denver Dispatch, I appear before you today to argue that the Denver Dispatch has the right to publish things that the public should know about. I believe that the public should know about any possible dangers, about what is happening to the environment, and if the chemical has caused any sicknesses or deaths to anyone in the lab.

The facts of the case are there is an article about a lab in Boulder, Colorado that is making biological weapons which is the same as Anthrax X. The government has stopped the Denver Dispatch from publishing their articles on the secret lab. But the Denver Dispatch has not broken the law in how they got their information. All the information they have is already public. It may just be a misunderstanding if there was something secret in our article.

The Justices are being asked to decide if the Denver Dispatch should be allowed to continue their series of articles on the government’s secret lab in Boulder, Colorado. Think of what could happen if we start the first part of the newspaper and do not publish the others?! People will want to know about the lab! It may cause the public to panic if they do not know what is going on.

In Near vs. Minnesota in the year of 1931, Justice Hughes wrote as part of the majority opinion, “The great English scholar Blackstone wrote that freedom of the press is necessary if we want free people. This means that we have to let the people or any one publish what they want when they want.”

In this case the court decided in the majority for Near, letting him print his newspaper called “The Saturday Press” because stopping his newspaper before it was even published would be prior restraint and that would be against the law.

I believe this applies to the Denver Dispatch case because we have freedom of speech. We have the right to publish what we want when we want. The government feels that publishing these newspapers is wrong. Many people felt that way about Near’s paper but he had the right to publish and we don’t. If the court rules against us that, too, would be prior restraint and would be unfair. It is wrong to put national security above the 1st Amendment, which is what the government has done.

In the 1st Amendment it says, “Congress is not allowed to make laws that stop people from speaking, writing, printing or broadcasting.”

I feel this applies to the Denver Dispatch case because the Congress has made a law that stops the Denver Dispatch from writing and printing their newspaper.

The Justices should rule in favor of the Denver Dispatch because we got all of our information legally. So if there was something secret in our article then the person where we got our information from should be in trouble, not us. Thank you.

[Editor's note: "The Constitution Works" is a role-playing exercise that gives students a chance to learn about the United States Constitution and government. The students role-play a hypothetical court case called Denver Dispatch v. United States. Students take on roles as a lawyer or Supreme Court Justice. They think about what is more important: the freedom of the newspaper to print what it wants OR the government's duty to protect our nation's security.]

Good guys keep running after bad guys. Bad guy reaches car and Dumb looks back and bangs into car and falls.)

Dumb: “OW! I think that hurts.”

(Dumb falls.)

(People run over him and get in car. Girl opens the door and bangs his head as he looks up.)

The-Girl-Who-Was-Too-Ugly-To-Have-A-Name (robot): Get in the car Dumb. . .NOW!

(Opens window.)

The-Girl-Who-Was-Too-Ugly-To-Have-A-Name (robot): Mu, ha, ha, ha, mu, ha, ha, ha! I beat you this time, and I got away with the Big Red Button to destroy the world! Mu, ha, ha, ha, mu, ha, ha!

Frank: It's OK. No, it’s not. . . .Whatever! We need that button! The button can only be pushed by Stupid Impulse. That’s why she has Dumb and Dumber. Get them and that button and bring it to me. Are you up for it?

Alanna: Yeah! Let’s go!

Rachel: Let’s get that button!

Lexi: What are we waiting for?!

Frank: OK, girls, but be careful. There’s some dumb people out there like Dumb and Dumber who will do dumb things. Now let’s see who’s in this crime: Dumb and Dumber and The-Girl-Who-Was-Too-Ugly-To-Have-A-Name. . . .What good timing!

Alanna: That was really good timing.

Rachel: Let’s go, I’m board.

Lexi- Me, too.

(Running in slow motion.)

Person: Why are you running in slow motion?

All: For dramatic effect.

(In The-Girl-Who-Was-Too-Ugly-To-Have-A-Name (robot) lair. The-Girl-Who-Was-Too-Ugly-To-Have-A-Name (robot) comes out of shadow.)

The-Girl-Who-Was-Too-Ugly-To-Have-A-Name (robot): Hello girls, I was expecting you. Nice job, Lexi.

Lexi: Thanks, I brought them here.

Rachel: What?! You're working for her!?

Alanna: You trader!

(Evil laugh. Fight. Alonna & Rachel put The-Girl-Who-Was-Too-Ugly-To-Have-A-Name (robot) & Lexi against wall.)

The-Girl-Who-Was-Too-Ugly-To-Have-A-Name (robot): I guess you might as well see me because your going to steal The Red Button.

(The-Girl-Who-Was-Too-Ugly-To-Have-A-Name walks out.)

The-Girl-Who-Was-Too-Ugly-To-Have-A-Name: I am The-Girl-Who-Was-Too-Ugly-To-Have-A-Name.

Alanna: Wow.

The-Girl-Who-Was-Too-Ugly-To-Have-A-Name: Dumb, Dumber.

(Pause)

The-Girl-Who-Was-Too-Ugly-To-Have-A-Name: Don’t press the red button!

Dumber: Must resist stupidity impulse.

(Alanna lets go of The-Girl-Who-Was-Too-Ugly-To-Have-A-Name and grabs button.)

(The-Girl-Who-Was-Too-Ugly-To-Have-A-Name, Dumb, Lexi and Dumber go away.)

Rachel: At least we got The Red Button.

The-Girl-Who-Was-Too-Ugly-To-Have-A-Name: I may not have destroyed the world this time but I will next time!

(The-Girl-Who-Was-Too-Ugly-To-Have-A-Name (robot) sings Mr. Robotic and does "The Robot.” Camera goes on everyone and says their name and character. Everybody is dancing.)
