[Editor's Note: My 2006-2007 students have just graduated 5th grade. They have been in school for about six years. In another six years they will be a senior in high school. Believe it or not, they are about half way through their public schooling life!
Below is a postcard they wrote to their "12th grade self." I will mail it to them in June 2013!]

The 5th Harry Potter is finally coming out. It is going to be filmed in Tokyo, the capital of Japan. I cant wait until it comes out. JK Rowling's seventh and final book in the Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, will hit shop shelves at one minute past midnight on 21st of July. It’s not yet known when the film version will be made.
I think this going to be a very interesting movie!

The Denver Dispatch v. the United States (2007)
Docket Number 93-8000
The Denver Dispatch wanted to publish these articles about biological weapons and anthrax and what the government in Boulder, Colorado is making. The government did not want them to publish these military secrets though the Denver Dispatch.
The government argued that the Denver Dispatch should not be able to publish military secrets in the Denver Dispatch, and they want to stop that.
The lawyers for the Denver Dispatch argued that they should be able to publish the article so people can be informed about the military. They have 1st Amendment rights.
Justice Bruno voted in favor of the government. He voted for the government because you should not be able to publish military secrets because it can lead to danger. It causes danger and if our enemies know we can lose the war we’re in.
[Editor's note: "The Constitution Works" is a role-playing exercise that gives students a chance to learn about the United States Constitution and government. The students role play a hypothetical court case called Denver Dispatch v. United States. Students take on roles as a lawyer or Supreme Court Justice. They think about what is more important: the freedom of the newspaper to print what it wants OR the government's duty to protect our nation's security.]

I should not take drugs smoke, drink, or get under peer pressure.
You should not take those things or get under peer pressure because it can damage your body. It can kill you. It is bad if you get under peer pressure because it can lead to smoking or drinking or something else like losing your friends or your self by dieing.
That is why I pledge never to do those things because it bad!
[Editor's note: This year millions of school children around the world will benefit from D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education), the highly acclaimed program that gives kids the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence. D.A.R.E. was founded in 1983 in Los Angeles and has proven so successful that it is now being implemented in 75 percent of our nation's school districts and in more than 43 countries around the world. D.A.R.E. is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children from kindergarten through 12th grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives. We thank Officer DiRuzza for leading us this year! To read more about DARE go HERE.]

James is a cute "top dog." Not only that, he is amazing! He is a therapy dog. That means he helps sick people in need. Isn't that amazing? I wish I had a dog like that. (I don't have a dog at all. . .I wish I did.
I think that dog is amazing. I don't think a human can do that?(Super dog?)

[Editor’s note: Our class had the privilege of working with the Lincoln Center Institute
for the Arts in Education Program here at MAS.
This year, our class worked with Teaching Artist Lynn Ligammari. We studied the work of Ecos del Sur by Camera Latina. Ecos del Sur is a program of classical Central and South American music that covers ten different composers from nine different countries played by an ensemble comprising six different instruments. Five musicians—piano, flute, guitar, cello, and voice—perform in various combinations and as a full ensemble.
We focused on how musical elements (such as rhythm, tempo, and ensemble interaction/balance) are used to convey multiple moods and musical landscapes in Camerata Latina’s Ecos Del Sur.
We reflected on and discussed what we noticed from the Ecos Del Sur performance and how music “tells a story.” We then focused on some of the musical patterns from the performance and how those musical patterns make us think of visual and verbal patterns and tell a “story.” We selected an instrument to “tell a story,” drew visual representations of that “story,” and worked with others (ensemble) to compose your own piecesong (composition).

When I had to leave Kevin, my little brother, I was upset. He was not my real brother but if he were my real brother he would be really special. I wish I could be with him forever. It’s like losing a real brother. He is a brother like no other from a different mother. I’m going to miss him!
