[Editor's Note: My 2006-2007 students have just graduated 5th grade. They have been in school for about six years. In another six years they will be a senior in high school. Believe it or not, they are about half way through their public schooling life!
Below is a postcard they wrote to their "12th grade self." I will mail it to them in June 2013!]

Hey! Want to find a way to have fun? If you do then you should go on vacations!
Friends and families should go on vacations because, first of all, you can learn something new about a new place! Secondly, you can also explorer and have fun in a place you’ve never been to! In addition, you can meet new people, too.
Just like me! I’ve never been to New Jersey, but I really wanted to go to my cousin’s house, so I went! And it was a blast! I had an awesome time! I also learned many things about New Jersey. I learned that New Jersey can be really quiet! But it’s so much fun when it’s party time! You can also have many fairs on the streets because cars are mostly away from the streets!
The most important part of going on vacations is that you get to spend plenty of time with family! You can also learn more about your family. For example, when I first met my cousin Johanna, I had no clue that she had a dog! And now I love going to her house to play with her dog!
It’s really cool and fun to go on vacations! So, are you going on vacation?

Lip Gloss
Original lyrics by Lil Mama
Crew:
Lil Mama: Sydney
Mom: Destiny
Singers: Stephanie, Sydney, Destiny, Solange, Jaileen, Jackie, Margo, Amanda
Everyone:
What’s wrong?
Lil Mama:
Pffts!
I just want to be apart of the cool crowd
I just feel like I don’t have what it takes
Everyone:
We have something here for you.
This lip gloss worked for us!
Lil' Mama (Spoken):
I gotta ask em'-
cause if I don't
Its poppin’ (4x)
I don't know
Let’s go
What u know bout me,
what u,
what u know bout me
What u know bout me,
what u know.
They say my lip gloss is cool,
my lip gloss be poppin
I’m standing at my locker,
and all the boys keep stoppin
what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know bout me
what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know
They say my lip gloss be poppin,
my lip gloss is cool
all the boys keep jockin,
they chase me after school
after skoool
mac-mac, loreal,
yep cuz I’m worth it
love the way I puts it on
so perfect
wipe the corners of my mouth
so I work it
when I walk down the hallway
they can’t say nuthin
oh, oh, oh,
my lips so lucious
the way I spice it up
with the mac-mac brushes
loreal got them
want watermelon crushes
that's probably the reason
all these boys got crushes
what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know bout me
what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know
They say my lip gloss is cool,
my lip gloss be poppin
I'm standin at my locker,
and all the boys keep stoppin
what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know bout me
what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know
They say my lip gloss is poppin,
my lip gloss is cool
all the boys keep jockin,
they chase me after school
when it’s time for lunch,
my lips still rock
Lil Mama melon with the hot pink top
cherry, vanilla,
flavors is a virtual thing
they lovin,
lip gloss universal
the boys really like it,
the girls don’t speak,
they rollin' they eyes,
they lip gloss cheap
it ain’t my fault,
but I can upgrade you
show you how to use nice things
with nice flavors
what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know bout me
what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know
They say my lip gloss is cool
my lip gloss be poppin
I’m standing at my locker
and all the boys keep stoppin
what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know bout me
what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know
They say my lip gloss is poppin, my lip gloss is cool
all the boys keep jockin,
they chase me after school
cuz my lip gloss is poppin
(it`s poppin 4x)
cuz my lip gloss is poppin
(it`s poppin 4x)
sittin in 8th period,
thought I was in trouble
Dean called me on the loud speaker,
on the double I stepped in the office
like,
Yes Ms. McClarkson?
she's like,
Girl ran out of my lip gloss.
Write down where you get yours from
cuz I must admit that bubble gum,
is poppin (3x)
she ain’t frontin'
and uh ...
I be lovin' it,
I be,
I be lovin' it
uh ...
I be usin' it,
I be,
I be usin' it
I ...
I be rubbin' it,
I be,
I be rubbin' it
on my lips, my lips
uh...
my lip gloss
what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know bout me
what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know
They say my lip gloss is cool,
my lip gloss be poppin'
I’m standing at my locker,
and all the boys keep stoppin'
what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know bout me
what u know bout me,
what u,
what u know
They say my lip gloss is poppin,
my lip gloss is cool
all the boys keep jockin,
they chase me after school

One Big Squid!

This is so cool! You guys have to read this! In the Chilean Sea off the coast of New Zealand, people found a creature with eight arms, two super long tentacles, and huge big eyes! Guess what that was? It was a squid! People say that the big squid was as big as a school bus! The fishermen were working so hard and breaking their backs and every part of their body to get the creature into a cargo net and haul it aboard their ship. Scientists guessed that the animal weighs about a half-ton and is about 40 feet long!
I think that people should take good care of this big gigantic squid because the squid might die or get sick! People should also keep the squid in a safe and quiet place. I also think that it would be a great idea to put the squid in an Aquarium so that other people can explorer the squid, take pictures, or maybe just visit for fun!

Man Creates Fuel Out of Coconuts

Do you like coconuts? They are really good and very tasty! In this article a man invents fuel out of coconuts! His name is John Wolrath and he is from Soloman Island. He made a fuel out of coconut oil, called coco bio-diesel that's environmentally friendly and cheaper than petrol or diesel. He came up with this idea to use coconuts from trees and not waste them. He also hopes that people will start using the fuel for homes and cars, so that we can not waste useful oil.
I think that this is really cool! This man must be a genius. What a great invention he came up with. He must be a really caring person. People will not waste that much oil anymore, even though we are running out of oil. If we have enough coconuts we have much more oil for our environment. I really liked reading and writing about this article.

Spiders Found Living in Boy's Ear

This is so disgusting and cool you have to read this! In this article a spider goes inside a boy’s ear. A boy was so scared when he found out that two spiders had moved into his ear and had made a home. The boy Jesse Courtney is only 9-years old from Oregon. Jesse had heard a popping noise in his ear hand had told his mom about it. He began to have an ache so they took Jesse to a doctor. Then they killed the two spiders and Jesse kept them as a souvenir, and had brought the spiders to school to show his classmates.
I think that this is so disgusting and unbelievable! How could two humongous spiders fit and go in his ear?! Was he sleeping? Did he want the spiders to go in his ear? I also think that this could have been really dangerous because the two spiders could have laid eggs and no one even knows about it! But I really enjoyed writing this it was so interesting!

Confused Penguin Miles from Home

Hey everybody! You guys have to read this! In this article they talk about a penguin that gets a bit confused and gets lost, after straying a whopping 3,000 miles (5,000 km) from his home near Antarctica. The penguin arrived at Peru's Paracas National Reserve after swimming all the way from the Strait of Magellan near southern Chile.
I think that they should keep him in a safe place until they can bring him back to his home. Penguins need to be in cold places so they shouldn’t keep him in a warm place. I think that it is really strange for a penguin to get lost. Was anyone watching him?

The Constitution Works! Brief and oral Arguement for the Denver Dispatch

May it please the court? My name is Stephanie Magana, as a lawyer for the Denver Dispatch. I appear before you today to argue that the Denver Dispatch should be published. The Denver Dispatch should publish things that the public should know about. People should know more information about the lab.
The facts of the case are that the series of articles the “The Denver Dispatch” wants to publish is telling information to the public about the military. In the “The Denver Dispatch” article they inform the public about the military’s new chemical Anthrax X. Anthrax X is a chemical made to be used in war. Anthrax X is like a sickness in a powder and poisonous. Anthrax X is used in war to win in war.
The Justices are being asked to decide if the Denver Dispatch should be allowed to continue their series of articles on the government secret lab.
In New York Times vs. United States in the year 1971, Justice Black wrote as part of the majority opinion, “It is wrong to put National security above the First Amendment.”
In this case the court decided to agree with New York Times that it is Constitutional that the newspaper has a right to print the Pentagon Papers and that the government had no right to stop it.
I believe this applies to the Denver Dispatch case because this is also an argument about the First Amendment. Freedom of speech and of the press is being questioned. Nothing and no one will endanger us if nothing has happened in the two months after the article “The Denver Dispatch” came out. Why would something bad happen now?
In the First and Second Amendment of the Constitution it says we have freedom of speech and freedom of the press. The Constitution was made to make sure that people remain free, forever.
I feel this applies to the Denver Dispatch case because everyone should have freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Without freedom we are not free. The government cannot stop someone from publishing to the public because of freedom of speech. Under the First Amendment of the Constitution, Congress is not allowed to make laws that stop people from speaking, writing, and printing or broadcasting on television or radio what they want to say. The Denver Dispatch newspaper is only giving information to the public. It does not harm anyone, and people should know information.
The Justices should rule in favor of the Denver Dispatch because we have the right to publish the Denver Dispatch to the public. People should know more information about the lab. It won’t lead us to danger.
[Editor's note: "The Constitution Works" is a role-playing exercise that gives students a chance to learn about the United States Constitution and government. The students role-play a hypothetical court case called Denver Dispatch v. United States. Students take on roles as a lawyer or Supreme Court Justice. They think about what is more important: the freedom of the newspaper to print what it wants OR the government's duty to protect our nation's security.]
