Postcard To My 12th Grade Self

[Editor's Note: My 2006-2007 students have just graduated 5th grade. They have been in school for about six years. In another six years they will be a senior in high school. Believe it or not, they are about half way through their public schooling life!
Below is a postcard they wrote to their "12th grade self." I will mail it to them in June 2013!]

Do you think families should be caring? I do. Last week we just had a family dinner. We ate and laughed and played games. Family’s should be caring to each other.
First of all, families should be caring to each other because what if you get in to a fight? One time my friend from Harrison called me. She started saying that she hates her life and she wants a new life. And, no, they do not argue anymore.
Secondly, families should be caring to each other because you could help each other and cheer each other up. When my sister had a miscarriage all of our family came to the hospital and cheered her up.
Lastly, you will speak to each other. My sister and cousins do not speak to each other because one cousin did not want the other cousin to hang out with my sister. My family is saying that they should speak to each other.
If you want to help your family, do not want to get in to fights, and you want to speak to each other, be caring now!

Floods and mudslides ravage China

There were heavy rains across China and that is what caused the flood. At least 66 people died there and 600,000 people were homeless. The worst part that got flooded was the farming area. They don’t have flood barriers and other emergency measures to protect the land from rising rivers. Every summer they get heavy rain and then it begins to be a flood.
I feel bad for them. In Mamaroneck we had two floods this year. I had to go to my sister's house. It was horrible. I was cracking up when we had to walk in the water to get changing clothes. My mom was like, “STOP LAUGHING!” It was like I was walking in a pool.

Paris jail sentence cut in half

Paris Hilton only has 23 days in jail for driving a car when she was not supposed to. She should really have 45 days but because of her good behavior she has 23. She has been released but she is not going to go into a normal cell. She is going into a cell that celebrities and police officers go to. The article says she has about an hour outside of her cell showering and watching T.V.
I think this story is okay but I cannot believe she got locked up. She is crazy! Can you believe her? And I do not think she should get out in 23 days. She should stay in there all her life. She is selfish.

The Year of the Pig

A lot of people were rushing to get on the trains, airplanes and buses to get to China. The year of the Pig began Sunday, February 18. More than one billion people from around the world came to celebrate the special holiday with each other. People in China are going from Beijing to Singapore. They are going to temples to pray for good fortunes in the future. Even business places are closed. The Chinese New Year is not just celebrated in China; it’s celebrated in many other places too. Did you know that the Chinese New Year is celebrated at the second new moon after the winter solstice?
You don’t have to be Chinese to celebrate the Chinese New Years. I celebrate it, and I am not Chinese. I was born the year of the pig. What year were you born?
