betty on the high wire reflexion

Article posted June 9, 2012 at 05:18 PM GMT • comment • Reads 32

For my reflection on the book betti on the high wire I chose Betti. At the beginning of the book Babo was very independent and didn't care about getting into trouble. She also was hostile to anything new and didn't want to have anything to do with America or melons. She was very stubborn. She didn't understand America so she made up explanations for all the strange things she heard about. When she arrived at the Buckwoerths her personality changed a bit because she was afraid they were going to do something horrible to her if she got in trouble so she tried to be good. when she was at day camp she realized that because the melon kids had toyes and their own games they didn't want her circus stories that she told the leftover kids. She was planning to run away but then she met Meata and Meta taught her that if she ran away the buckworths would be sad. She also accepted that her parents were dead. This was a turning point in Babo's life in America.

After her play date with Meatahe started accepting parts of American life like T.V. and day camp. She stopped being resentful of George and stood up to bullies like Bobby Ray. Betty still hung on to her circus life but she also accepted things like her new name. At the fireworks though she had a flashback to the war in her country and started panicking. Her time in America still affected what she did in the situation. At the beginning of the book she would have not tried to go back for the Buckworths. I think this symbolized that she had started to consider the Buckworths as her family. At the end of the book Betty came to sort of a compromise between America and the circus. She chose a birthday, and American custom but she choose to celebrate it like a circus. The End.
