The Horrible Terrible Substitute Teacher

Mrs. B was a horrible teacher because she would do the wrong things that Miss Noshie assigned, and laugh about it. And one day, she made us play games for a whole hour, like charades, and wink murder, and we would always go on the ipad. Every day she would come and tell us that she forgot steps, or gave us the wrong thing. One day, instead of working, she let us come down to the computer lab, and play mathletics. And she also let some kids stay in recess and play mathletics. One time, we were about to write a personal narrative, and then she was actually planning a trick with the other class, and then we got scared and had to write about it instead of the personal narrative. A few days ago, miss noshie assigned a experiment in science, and she went looking for pebbles on the beach, and miss B asked her if she could get pebbles, and she said no, but she went and did it anyway.

Phones to School

Don’t you ever wonder why you aloud to bring phones to school? It’s so annoying! Maybe you would hide it in your bag. But teachers may find it and take it away! What if you’re mum finds out, and takes it away! What if you could take it to school? Wouldn’t that be just amazing!

What if you needed to call your mum at exactly 2:05 and it was something very important, so you put a timer. If you didn’t have one, you might lose track of time! But on your phone, you will get the exact time to call.

Maybe one day you are walking home from school, and you forget where to go! There are no phone booths anyone with you and you don’t know anyone! You can’t talk to anybody... But if you had your phone with you, you could call somebody, or use your compass.

Now, what if there’s a big emergency, and your mum doesn’t know the schools number. But she has yours, and if you had your phone she would have been able to call you, and you would have left school early!

So, without a phone at school, there could have been an emergency, getting lost, and missing something important. So you should really convince your school to let you get your phones to school!

Students have been writing expository text since September. The focus has been on the characteristics of the genre, and a number of different styles within the genre. In Writers Workshop, the focus has been on Ideas and Organization, and a beginning has been made into Sentence Fluency. This particular writing piece was an assessment to see to what extend students can plan and execute a text independently, including the formatting (which was up to their choice, for a change). Written on December 17, 2012, this was a timed assignment. This is the result.

The Cat

Layana© January 2013

When I came home with a new cat in my arms..

“Oh my God,” mother said, why do you have a cat?”

I replied, “Well, I found it on the streets, and it was raining, so I picked it up and got it!”

“Wash it immedietly! You can keep it, but just wash it,” she answered

“Okay,” I said “ill show you that I can take very good care of it!”

My mother said,”What will you name it?”

“Sparkie,” I said, “isn’t it cute?”

“Actually, it is,”  mother told me.

                            The Roll-up

Layana© January 2013

“Hi Leen,” said Ona, “what do you have for snack?”

“Oh nothing, just a fruit rollup,” replied Leen.

“A fruit rollup! Lucky, all I have is boring old bread,” said Ona.

“Um, I don’t know what I should do about it,” answered Leen.

“And Im so hungry!” whined Ona, “ I don’t know what I should do either!”

“Well, I could give you a piece of my roll-up?” said Leen.

“Sure!” said Layana.

A Persuasive Letter

December 7, 2012

To whom it may concern,

I personally love Nabil net, but if I were to change something, everything would be fine, except one thing. A bunch of other people and I had a little talk and we came up with, you not having a shop could cause problems.

Well, you want many people to know your company, so I think that they should know that you have a shop first. If you don’t have one, not a lot of people will know about it because they can’t walk by and wonder what it is so they won’t walk inside.

Since people know that you just have a website, they might think that its bad quality if they don’t look it up, so they won’t buy from you. They might think that it’s just a group of friends doing this.

Now, you might have had a good think about this but I have another reason to add. In some schools, kids talk about shops and the more kids hear it, the more they go to the shops the more customers the shop would have, and it will be more popular. If you don’t have a shop, no kids will admire you.

I hope you had a good think reading this, how people can’t stop by, kids can’t admire it and people won’t take it seriously. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

LE

How to Tie Your Shoes

Article posted December 19, 2012 at 08:36 AM GMT+2 • comment (1) • Reads 159

This Expository Text was written by Layana © October 2012

You know what? I bet you don’t know how to tie your shoes, and you are way too embarrassed to say so. I think you need some help, don’t be so sad. This story will help you with your problem. So, no worries!

First of all, you need to know the basics. Don’t let go in the middle of tying your shoes, don’t get mad when you make a mistake, and so on. Right, so you start by picking up both of your laces from the aglets and tie a knot. If you don’t know what I am talking about, I will show you what to do; first of all you put one on top of the other and lift them. You will see a little hole, now you just pull. That’s the first step. You’re doing well if you managed to do that.

After that, take both of your laces like bunny ears, (loops) and put them on top of each other. That is the second step. If you managed to do all that, you will be able to do the other steps.

Okay, so you covered the hard part. All you need to do is put one lace in the little hole, and pull. are you clear with the steps? You have tied your shoes! I think you are pretty proud of yourself, huh?

When you started this text, I bet you didn’t even know how to tie your shoes. And you were way too shy to ask. But, thanks to this text, you know how to tie your shoes! Now, why don’t you go get shoes with laces!

In this third expository text, the focus is on the writing traits Ideas and Organization. The students have to explain in 3 steps how to do something. The language has to be clear and functional. The concept of sentence fluency was introduced (but not practiced yet), and students are encouraged to work with different sentence length while using conjunctions, which they have been practicing with in their grammar log. The presentation is slowly becoming second nature, indicating that certain formatting skills are mastered.

Deir Al Qammar

This Expository Text was written by LE © October 2012

Every year in ACS we go on fieldtrips. This year we went to Deir Al Qmmar to camp there. Deir Al Qammar is in Beirut in the Mountains. Deir Al Qammar was pretty fun. You play loads of games, listen to nature, and eat great food. And it is really pretty. But there is something terrible about it. Read to find out.

Usually, the people put terrible music when you are about to sleep. They play it so the thieves don’t come. It is so annoying that you can’t sleep until you get WAY too tired. You will wake up early, and you do not have enough energy to do all the activities that is very bad for you!

Sometimes, you’re almost asleep even if you’re dead tired you can’t sleep because there are a million rocks under you. A student had a really big rock under him. His back was really hurting him the next day because the rock was under him all night. How terrible.

And when you are just about to fall sleep, you look up and see shadows. You get very scared and you think it’s a person, but it’s actually the trees. It scares you a lot because you think that he has a knife or something, Because of its branches. You won’t be able to sleep after that!

So, you have the terrible music, shadows at night, and a back ache! What a great trip I really think you would love it there. If you have to go next time, I advise you to pass.

This second expository text is the product of a number of mini-lessons. The focus was again on traits (Organization, Ideas and Presentation). The topic was given (their last field trip at ACS) , and the students had to form their opinion (stated in the introduction), supported by ideas (one for each of the body paragraphs). The details had to be relevant, focused and I was especially looking for clarity in language. The presentation was the same as their First Expository text, with the added difficulty that they had to find (shared folders) and insert a picture related to their topic.

Erasers

School projects can be really fun some times. But other times, you have to start the whole thing over and over, and over again because teachers don’t like messy papers. Not so fun anymore. But there’s a creation that will stop you from having to start all over. Do you know what it is?

Now, you always want your project to be perfect when you hand it in to your teacher, because some teachers HATE messy papers. They make you restart all over again when it is messy, erasers can erase it for you. So, you don’t have a messy cardboard. You will surprise your friends AND your teacher if you get an eraser. Plus, you might get extra credit for neatness!

Also, if you have your own eraser, you don’t have to reach forward, and kill your arms, or keep asking your friends for their eraser. Some erasers come at the end of your pencil! You just flip your pencil over and erase. Besides, if your eraser gets too short, and you cannot erase, you just sharpen it! Trust me, I do it all the time.

OK, now your arms don’t kill you, and your paper is not messy. How great is that?! But, last but not least, the best part is, you don’t need to start over! That’s why I really love erasers! Also it’s pretty cheap. You might even go home with a super happy mum! Maybe she’ll even get you a present! All because of that eraser you got.

Now, you have a clean cardboard, your arms don’t kill, and you don’t need to start over. That’s why erasers are very handy for school work. Next time you have an assignment coming up, I advise you to go get an eraser.
