I chose to do a stacked column graph to show my data on the amount of carnivore and herbivore roadkill in Rye from the years of 2006-2009. I chose a stacked column graph because it shows the number of carnivores and herbivores killed over a 4 year period from 2006-2009. The red bars show the amount of Herbivores killed in each year and the blue bars show how many carnivores are killed each year. This data was taken from students in Rye and Newcastle New Hampshire. As you can there are way more herbivores killed than carnivores in each of the years.

Roadkill Carnivores and Herbivores Analysis

I chose to study my roadkill project on if carnivores or herbivores get killed the most for roadkill. My hypothesis states that herbivores get killed the most. I got this because usually herbivores are smaller and harder to see when driving on the road. They are constantly moving to escape carnivores which make them have to cross streets. From just looking at the amount of squirrels killed in 2009 I could see that I was right. Squirrels are by far the most killed roadkill in Rye and Newcastle New Hampshire. They are herbivores and are constantly running across the road. Just from living in Rye, I know that Carnivores wouldn’t get killed as much as herbivores because there are not as much animals that eat other animals in Rye.
The results were that herbivores did get killed the most. The squirrels really helped boost the herbivores up with 68 deaths over 4 years! The squirrels really affected the roads especially this year. Everywhere you go you see at least one dead squirrel on the road. The data might not even have counted all of the squirrels that were killed in Rye and Newcastle. Every year the squirrels were the highest amount of roadkill for each of the 4 years.
I was expecting the herbivores to be the most roadkill especially from the effect of the squirrels. A big variable that really affected the data was the amount of squirrels that were killed. Some years were down with the roadkill maybe resulting from the weather. If it is bad weather the roadkill is down because most animals are hibernating or in their nests. The amount of carnivores over the 4 years was really low. The average of carnivores over the 4 years was only 6. The average of herbivores over the 4 years was 28 animals! This was a huge effect on the results. This really affected the results for our data over the 4 years. When I first did this project I was trying to compare the amount of predators and prey. I realized that all animals can be predator and prey no matter what type of animal. I then decided to change my project to comparing carnivores and herbivores.
The amount of squirrels will rise next year. This will make the amount of herbivores that are roadkill go up even more. I think the population of squirrels will go up because I believe the weather next year will be warmer from global warming in the spring. When the weather is warmer more animals are out. This makes more animals run across the road. If I could do this project over again I would find more information on the weather and other variables that might affect the amount of roadkill. I believe the amount of roadkill will increase over the years with the population and the warmer climate.

I chose to create this advertisement for my shoe because I was thinking about my lake house and the wilderness. This shoe goes out to people who love the outdoors and the wilderness. This is good for hiking, fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities.

Our class did a project on Roadkill on the roads in New Castle and Rye, NH. We kept track of how much roadkill was on the roads and we wrote down the animals for 7 weeks. This graph shows the amount of different animals that were roadkill during the 7 week period. I noticed that the gray squirrels had by far the highest number of roadkill. I believe they are the highest because Rye and New Castle have more gray squirrels than any other animal.

I prepared for The Earthday Earthcast by creating a slide show about the 3 r's. My group researched and put together a slide show about what the 3 r's do, what's the most important and why they are important. This helped to prepare and to make it so it is not less nervous.

Have you ever wanted to plant garden and be able to eat the things that you grew? Have you ever just wanted to get connected with your neighborhood and make some best friends? Seed Folks is a book about some people just getting together to make a big community garden. They have to make the garden in a courtyard that lies in the shadows of Cleveland, Ohio. All of these people have connections to how they live which makes the community feel more connected with each other. It takes some time for the garden to start but it gets going after a while. Seed Folks is a heartwarming book that will lift up your spirits and let them soar to new heights of compassion.
Ms. O’Connell’s Language Art class did a project on Seed Folks. We had to make 2 seed packets. One seed packet was a plant that connected with the Seed Folks book. The other seed packet had a plant that had some connection to someone in your family. My first seed packet was a connection with Kim, a character in the book. Kim is a little girl who starts the garden. She is shy and sensitive. She misses her father because of his death so she decides to start a small garden. Soon people start to notice her little garden and want to join in. The garden becomes a big success. I named my seed packet, Little Lima’s Lima Beans. They are little black beans that are small which compare with Kim. They don’t grow in the sun all day but need to be moved into the shade. This compares with Kim’s sensitivity. They grow up your family alter that has a picture of your dad on it. This compares to Kim’s feelings for missing her dad. The beans may be small but never underestimate them. They taste really good.
My second seed packet was a connection with my dog Baxter, a wild-crazy puppy that never wants to stop playing. The name of my seed packet is Wild, Wild Wheat, the Wheat that’s Wild. This wheat grows up 20-50 feet high. It sprouts in 30 min and won’t stop eating when they first sprout. This compares to Baxter’s craziness. This wheat his fury ends which compares to Baxter’s furry tail. When growing the wheat you need to plant at least 2 seeds so it can have a companion. This compares to Baxter’s need to play. Baxter is a crazy dog that is easily connected to the wildness of the wheat.

Acid Rain

Acid rain is caused by pollution from cars, power plants, homes, planes, etc. There are 2 types of gases that are put into the air by pollution, Nitrogen Oxide and the Sulfur Dioxide. The Nitrogen Dioxide travels 50-300 miles from the pollutant source, and then forms into a nitric acid. The Sulfur Dioxide travels 500-1500 from the pollutant source, and then forms into a sulfuric acid. The sulfuric and nitric acids form into clouds caused by the moisture in the air and the heat from the sun. The acidic clouds rain down rain which contains some acid.
Acid rain can do a lot of damage. It can eat away at limestone, kill animals and destroy metal. The acid rain can affect lakes and water sources which affects the animals living in and around the water. It can affect our water sources and add chemicals to the soil. It can even eat away at some cars. Acid rain can be a big problem to society but we the power to stop it. We can help stop it by preventing the pollution that goes in the air. We can do this by carpooling, turning off our lights and saving power. Acid rain is a problem that we can control.
