The Snake

Article posted November 14, 2012 at 05:50 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 90

One brisk November night, I was walking up my driveway to get to my house. My dad was ahead of me, and I was almost there. I saw a curvy thing in the middle of the path. I thought it was a stick, so I kept walking. Then my dad stepped back and yelled “STOP!”. I backed up and I saw that the curvy thing in the path was not a stick; it was a baby diamondback rattlesnake!
I was really scared, and so was the rest of my family. If we had gotten any closer, it might have struck! Rattlesnakes can strike from up to 5 feet, so I made sure to step really far back so it would not hurt my or my brother and mom. I also checked that I was not on the gravel, in case there were any more lurking nearby or that one would feel my vibrations. I was terrified!
My dad went inside and got his camera, a flashlight, and a black light just in case there were any scorpions nearby. None of us wanted to kill the innocent snake since it was only looking for food. We also did not want to wait too long out side (we could not go in since the snake was on the path) for animal control to come to pick it up and take the snake away. We finally had to go to the last resort. My dad guided the snake off the path with a stick so then it would move away. The snake slithered off the concrete and went onto the road. We went into the house and closed the door.

My First Day At Brichta

Article posted October 29, 2012 at 06:49 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 96

I walked into the school with my mom. I was nervous. We found my class quickly. When I walked in everyone stared at me. It was so bad I wanted to hide under my desk. I wanted to run away, but I knew I would get in trouble. I knew already that I was going to have a bad day. It was awful!

The first day of school is boring. Its because on the first day, the teachers go over the rules and procedures. The worst part is when the teachers make new kids talk about themselves. I was nervous and shy.

Lunch was bad too. Kids were giving out Takis, Hot Cheetos, and any other thing that people liked. The boys were popping bags, just like they did at my old school. I sat with Anaiya, and then I left. Then someone told me that you were supposed to tell the monitors before you left. I was so embarrassed. I ran away so no one would see me.

At recess, I had no friends, so I just wandered around. After recess, it was silent reading, just like I used to have. It was the worst day ever!

How to Properly Put Out a Campfire

Article posted September 12, 2012 at 04:57 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 195

Campfires are one of the main causes of forest fires. Today I will tell you how to properly put out a campfire so it will stay extinguished.

When you make your fire, only get as much wood as you can use. If you can, let the wood burn into ash, because it makes it easier to put it out later. Keep your fire just the right size, so it will not spread to nearby trees or tinder, such as branches. Big fires are also harder to put out.

When you put out your campfire, pour lots of water on your campfire. Put the blazes out, and cover the embers with water too. Even the embers that are not glowing can start a fire very easily. Use a shovel to bury the embers and stir them up. Make sure that there are not embers under the fire pit stones. If you cannot find a water source, and you not want to waste your drinking water, use dirt to put it out. Do not bury the fire, or else it will just burn through the dirt and maybe spread. Sir up the dirt with the embers and it will put out the remainder of the fire.

Campfires are fun and easy to put out. I hope you remember how to put out a campfire!

How to Grow Cacti

Article posted August 28, 2012 at 04:55 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 272

Cacti are fun to grow because they have a long lifespan, some bloom in the spring or summer, and are easy to take care of. I will tell you how to grow your own cactus.

Most cacti require direct sunlight all day. Only a few can survive in the shade. They need 70® weather almost all year for them to grow. Almost all parts of the USA have the right growing conditions for them. Their primary growing season is in the summer.

Cacti need special soil for them to grow. Special cactus soil is available at nurseries, but you can make your own by using sand and potting soil in a 1:4 ratio. Potting soil does not work, because it does not drain fast enough.

Planting cactus is a little different from planting regular plants, such as house plants. You need special soil, which was mentioned in the previous paragraph, and you need to wait 2-3 weeks until you water it so you can let the roots get set in the soil. When you are buying a pot for a cactus, get one that only fits the cactus, not any bigger, since cacti grow so slowly. Getting a bigger pot and transplanting every 3-4 years will be fine.

Taking care of cactus can be very easy if you give it just the right amount of water, sunlight, and space. In the spring and summer, the cactus does most of its growing, so you should keep the soil damp under the surface. Outdoor cacti need to be watered 2-3 times a week, while indoor cacti need to be watered 2 times a week. In late summer, winter, or fall, cacti do not need any water since they are not growing, but indoor cacti still require 1 watering a week because of the warmth from the heater.
Cacti can get diseases from overwatering in fall and winter. They have been known to rot from it. In some areas there are mealy bugs, aphids, and mites, but you can get pesticides to take care of them.

So now you know how to grow your own cactus.

Roberto Clemente

Article posted August 16, 2012 at 04:29 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 524

Do you know why Roberto Clemente was such a respected ballplayer? I will tell you why.
One of the reasons that people loved Roberto was that he was a good player. He was the first Latin American baseball player to be voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, because he was one of the very few players to get 3,000 hits! His team appreciated him because he helped them get good scores. He was a very talented player, and he was valuable to his team.

Roberto Clemente also helped the people in Nicaragua when there was a giant earthquake. He helped people by delivering food, water, and medicine. He helped a boy that lost his legs get artificial ones. He thought that helping people was a good way to support the people of his country.

Roberto Clemente was a good role model to Latinos because he helped both kids and adults believe that they could do whatever that want, and not have to put up with racial insults. He is seen as a role model all over the country. He helped lots of people believe in themselves. Roberto himself also had to learn not to listen to mean comments from other people that did not believe he could play baseball just because he was a different ethnicity.

Roberto wanted to build a place that anybody could go to to learn to play sports. He called it Sports City. After Roberto passed away, his family and friends built it for him. Now lots of athletes have gotten their start at sports at Sports City.

I hope you learned a lot about Roberto Clemente form this essay. Roberto Clemente is loved and respected because he was a great player, and he dedicated a lot of his time to helping people.
