Budget Priorities

Between national debt and an ever rising unemployment rate, I think it's time for the U.S. government to reconsider their budget plans. With healthcare, education, and the previously mentioned unemployment issues, they wouldn't be left grabbing at nothing. People over 60 are the people who truly need the healthcare benefits, and yet they are the ones who are sorely lacking it! It's almost infuriating knowing that they are in higher risk of sickness and death, but they have no security of the subject. Along with this, public education systems are also suffering. People from lower income families are left to grasp whatever they can that is, like many other families, within their very limited budget. In my personal opinion, all schools public, private, and charter should offer more help to lower income families. Maybe some schools would, if they hadn't such a limited school budget. My final word on the subject of goverment alloted budgets would, of course, be on the subject of our forever growing unemployment rate. Maybe if we weren't spending millions of billions of dollars on risky, unsupported space expeditions, would could actually afford to create more jobs for the people who need them! It is NOT okay to finally have money to spend, and than blow it on some unresearched, unintelligent projects like we do. People are in desperate need of jobs, and right now, we can't seem to be able to provide these things.

Are Pro Athletes Paid Too Much?

When Peyton Manning was drafted to the Denver Broncos, he signed a 5 year/ 96 million dollar contract. Some people work every day of their lives and they still aren't rich. But, othere don't work a day and everything is handed to them on a silver platter.
I don't want to sound as though I disrespect that sport, because I know it takes hard work and dedication in order to truly play the sport. All that I'm saying is 96 million dollars to play football is a bit extreme. People work day in and day out to get paid minimum and just above minimum wage for doing things that aren't necassarily for other people's entertainment. From a certain persepective, I can see why people think thay NFl players are payed what they're worth, but sometimes, not all the time, players are drafted and basically bribed to 'enhance' the teams' performance, when really they are simply publicizing the team. So, in my personal opinion, players are paid much more than they're worth, especially if they are good players. But, if the player is good at what they do, they should definitley get paid what they are worth, and truly, I don't see that happening.

Option A

I chose the option A on this prompt because I figured it would be fun to write. It would be different, because based on the writer's opinion of the whole thing, their response would change.
Nationalism: a much stronger version of loyalty. Nationalism sort of had a tipping point, and according to the article it was a major factor in the war. It was said that because of nationalism, a single insult could be the first shot in a war.
Tolkien has many characters in his book, all 16 travelers, along with many contributing characters. But, in my opinion, Thorin really represents nationalism. It seems that his greed had given him some sort of motivation and fear factor to want to fight anyone who wanted even a mere twelvth of his great treasure, though he did stay for loyal to his fellow dwarves. He was prepared to complete any and every task he had, even if it conflicted with other nations and their goals.

If I could change the world,
I would end suffering,
and bring world peace,
everyone helping eachother out,
instead of fighting shouts.
I would end bias thoughts,
I would make friends
instead of getting shot.
I would end hunger,
I would end getting sick,
I would end greed,
And end the power trip,
I would make everyone speak.
Instead of getting shut out,
The world happy and
no one doubts,
That they ain't worth anything.
No more problems for anyone
to be something,
No more depression,
No one would be second
guessing.
Everyone would have
confidence,
And no more empires,
no more fighting,
everyone happily
uniting.
If I could change the world, Everyone would have confidence for themselves, and know they have the power to overcome anything.
-Matthew Pertonovich
This poem directly relates with me because I don't believe in the wars that drag our country and world down with them, or the empty threats that would tear alliances in the world apart. This poem represents all of the bad things about our country and others, and names all of the pointless things we do on a power trip. The poem claims that if he could change the world, he would let everyone speak, that he would give the unspoken a chance to voice their opnion. He says that he wouldn't let anyone feel worthless or unwanted. If anything, this poem is exactly what runs through my mind at any sight of rural treatment, so to speak. The fact that people can be judged by something as slight as skin color, or ethnicity, makes my blood boil. This poem captures all of things I want to change, and it really caught my eye because I don't think that anybody really shared my opinion of the poem.

For this assignment, I chose my "Holes in my Sidewalk" plan. I chose this because, in this plan, you were forced to consider your weaknesses. You had toreally thing about what your flaws were. then, you had to write them down, and describe how they affect you. I think that this plan was really helpful because some people had to dig deeper in themselves to find mistakes that they are constantly making, or "holes in their sidewalk."

What Can You Live Without?

Two words. My family. My friends. These people are the ones who keep from going nuclear and crazy.I can't live without the people who keep me grounded. Some of my best friends I've known forever, and others I've just met. But, without building strong relationships through out your life, and especially now, you won't survive. Middle school is one of the toughest times of our lives. But with my family, it's a different. Just this past year, we've gone through so much. If I had to live without, there would be no point in it. They are my rock. The ones that I depened on when things are tough, and through thick or thin.

Mystery Setting

An eerie silence hung over the small room. The windows covered with thick fog. The darkness so complete, you can't see your own hand infront of your face.
This would be a perfect mystery setting for me because you would be suspecting the worst to happen, and it would keep you on the edge of your seat. A good author can keep you guessing with every page.
But, I think that an eerie setting is better for mysteries because, if the author is good at what they do, you will be able to feel the fear, feel the tension, and everything else the characters are feeling

The Fallout of Fear

Whether it's the monster iunder your bed when you were six, or facing your parents when you go against their demands and defy them, fear will always play a signifigant part in life.
Sometimes, petty fears get in our way. The fear of heights, the fear of the dark, or any other fear can prevent us from doing what we truly want to do. It could keep you from riding that roller coaster with your friends, it can keep you from going to the haunted house. But, either way fear can hold you back. IF you let it.
Some people can go their whole life without riding a water slide, without seeing a horror flick. For some people, fear runs their life. They have no power over their own life because of their 'paralyzing' fear. To those on the outside, this fear could seem ridiculous. But to those experiencing it, this fear could be crippling.
I have a personal experience for this topic. Once, a couple of weeks ago, my family was at the mall. We had taken my parents, my 15 year old sister, my 17 year old brother, my 11 year old brother, my 4 year old sister, and my 1 year old little brother. We had reached the escalator,we being older brother, my younger brother, and both of my sisters, and the boys had already gone done, leaving my older sister and I to deal with my little sisters fear of the escalator.
"It's scary!" She had cried, glancing at the machine.
"Cayla, I'll hold your hand." I told her gently.
"No! I am scared!" She ran into the store behind us.
The point is that regardless of unintimidating a thing may be, do not underestimate fears. But, sometimes a fear may help us progress in life. A fear could help us reach heights we had thought impossible. But, only if you're ready to take a risk and jump.

Favorite Story

Out of all the stories we've read this year, my favorite would have to be 'War of the Wall'. I like this story because of it's story line, and it's characters. The kids of Taliferro Street have become so familiar with the wall, have another person, let alone an adult, interact with it, was strange and not welcomed. Another reason I like this story so much is the background. The kids explain that the painter lady is from Northern New York, they explain that they had lost people in the war, and I think that this really adds dimension. But, my top reason why this is my favorite short story is the symbolism behind the Wall. The wall stands for more than just a painted brick barrier. it stands for those who have loved, and those who wouldn't be coming back to see the way they were honored.

My Performance Rating

My performance rating would be very easy to decide. At this point in time, I'm doing very well in school. With straight A's, I think any employer would hire me. I don't mean to sound cocky, but in a certain aspect, some people hire based on how high your self esteem is.
So, some of my best traits are that I'm focused, and a hard-working kind of person. But some of my worst traits are that I'm disorganized and at times, I'm a bit frazzled. So, if I were an employer, I'd have to dig deeper to find to find personal traits that I may have not mentioned. I would try to find traits and specialities that relate to the job I was applying for.
My perfomance so far has been moderate. I know that there are people who are more considerate, and more compatible. But, on other levels, this year, I've been more confident and focused then I have been in a long time.
So, as a conclusion, I would hire myself because of some of my best qualities. But, I would want to work on my worst qualities.
