Hello! My name is Francesca and this is my first blog! I am in Mr. Schwan's 5th grade class.  Some of the really neat things that we do are:  taking home our class mascot, Marley, we talk to ham radio operators, we keep track of weather data, we podcast, and we learn about many different things.  We really do fun things.  Please come back and visit my blog soon!  Bye for now- Francesca

5th grade

Article posted October 26, 2009 at 02:01 PM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 1

My name is Xavier. I am in Mrs. Rhinehart's class. We have a class mascot. It is a bunny. We named him Snickers. We sent him to another school so that they can take him home. The other 5th grade teacher Mr. Schwan, is our computer and science teacher. He lets us build websites and do blogs like this one. In computer we record weather records of places all around the world. My place is Antigo, Wisconson. It can be as cold as 28.8 degrees farenheit and 100% humidity. Speaking of climate, we had a science test on climate. It was mainly about the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is a blanket-like layer in the atmosphere made up of gases over the earth that acts like the glass in a greenhouse. The layer reflects about 30% of the sun's heat so the earth stays cooler. It also traps the heat that gets in but does not let it out. This is the end of my blog.

Bye!

Weather Reports From Around the World

By: G Wiz

On an early September morning, at Saint Michael Lutheran School, one of the fifth grade teachers, Mr. Schwan, told his class that they would be gathering weather data.

On the first day of the project, children were assigned their WX Ham partner. They were given a paper on which they were supposed to write the given weather information. It was the beginning of a six week project that would hopefully excite students about weather.

"I assigned the weather report project for educational purposes. I thought it would give the students an opportunity to understand and categorize different parts of everyday weather. It also gave them the chance to meet new people," stated Mr. Schwan.

During the last session of recording weather, the students asked non - weather related questions like, What is your favorite food? or What is it like in Israel? It was a lot of fun. The children had a blast, but none of this could have happened without Mr. Schwan, his "walkie - talkie", and the weather volunteers!

You Say Goodbye, I say Hello

Article posted May 29, 2008 at 02:36 PM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 217

This will be my last blog. I'm so sad yet excited to be going into 6th grade! Thanks for reading my blog! I really appreciate you for taking the time out to read it! Please keep reading the blogs that the next class creates. I'm sure they'll appreciate it! Thanks=http://!!!!

To the person who will be #5 next year, you'll have fun making blogs that other people can read. But first, you'll have to get through keywords. Good luck with that! You'll have a great time with Mr. Schwan!

With Care,
Zoe

Having A Substitute For A Week

Mr. Schwan, our teacher, was at a conference in Minneapolis for a week, and in the meantime we had a substitute for a week. Having a substitute for a week was a lot of fun. We had 2 substitutes- Mrs. S, and Mrs. W. Unfortunately, I wasn't here for the first substitute because I was sick, but I was here for the second one. Our substitute for most of the week was Mrs. W. She was a great teacher. She added a lot of fun to learning things. Mrs. W read a book to us everyday called "Flush". We finished by the end of the week. It was a great book. We got to play a game called "Silent Ball", too. Silent ball is where you toss a dodge ball around the room, but if you don't catch it then you're out. While playing this game, you have to be silent too. During this week, the air conditioning unit in part of the building broke down, so our substitute let us go outside when we had computer. We had a lot of fun during this week with our substitutes. She was a nice, caring teacher, and I hope she had fun with us too. Overall, we had a great week, and I hope she subs for Mr. Schwan again (if we need a substitute).

Including Alice

Including Alice is a great book. In this book Alice McKinley- a strawberry blonde 15-year-old girl- has a brother named Lester, and a dad named Ben. But, there is a new addition to the family. Alice gets a new step mom named Sylvia. She is a gorgeous lady and Alice thought no one would be a better step mom than her. Turns out, she was wrong. Now, she has to share a bathroom with someone else, share her secrets to somebody she doesn't know completely, and all kinds of things! Could she ever trust Sylvia as a real mom? What happens next, you'll have to find out by reading the book!

Including Alice is a marvelous book. I definitely recommend it. It is all about a girl making her way through school, and problems, and some things you could learn to ignore such as fighting, etc. It's an amazing series!

What I Like About Fifth Grade At St. Michaels

I like many things about fifth grade at St. Michael's. First, I like that I have a lot of friends in my class. Second, I loved going to space camp. Space camp was a very fascinating place. We learned a great amount about astronaunts and space shuttles there. Lastly, I like the classes we have at St. Michael's. My favorite class is art. Art lets you express yourself in many different ways. Everything in fifth grade at St. Michaels is amazing!
