[Editor's Note: The 2007-2008 students have just graduated 5th grade. They have been in school for about six years. In another six years they will be a senior in high school. Believe it or not, they are about half way through their public schooling life! Below is a postcard they wrote to their "12th grade self." It will be mailed it to them in June 2014!]

Why you should babysit! (A)

Article posted June 5, 2008 at 03:22 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 521

Have you ever wanted to babysit? If you have, why? How many children? I think ALL (or most) kids and teens should babysit.

The first reason kids and teens should babysit is because it is fun. You get to play with whoever you are babysitting. Sometimes they want to show you their (something) and you start to smile and laugh. I remember when my sister told me that(whoever she was babysitting) showed her all of her dresses and they played dress up. In the end they were both laughing and smiling.

Another reason kids and teens should babysit is you get paid. If you go out somewhere or you want to get something expensive you get money from babysitting. One time I remember when I babysat my baby brother and I didn’t expect to get paid, but I did! And most of the time my baby brother was watching T.V.!

The biggest reason kids and teens should babysit is you earn people’s trust and get responsibility. If you do well the first time you get more responsibility and they will hire you again because you earned their trust. When you get more responsibility people think of you more maturely. Then more people will hire you to babysit.

As you can see, you must babysit because it is fun, you get to play, and you get more responsibility.

GO BABYSIT!

The Constitution Works: Oral Arguement for the Government (A)

Article posted May 29, 2008 at 02:31 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 431

[Editor's note: "The Constitution Works" is a role-playing exercise that gives students a chance to learn about the United States Constitution and government. The students role play a hypothetical court case, Denver Dispatch v. United States. Students take on roles as a lawyer or Supreme Court Justice. They think about what is more important: the freedom of the newspaper to print what it wants OR the government's duty to protect our nation's security. Read more about the Constitution Works program HERE.

May it please the court; we are the respondents, representing the United States government.

We appear before you today to ask the Supreme Court to uphold the court order that the lower court and the appeals court imposed on the Denver Dispatch newspaper.

This case is about the Denver Dispatch telling everyone and our enemies about our secret laboratory near Boulder, Colorado. They also show a picture of the secret lab. They tell about the biological weapons that we are developing. They also tell about the laboratories and our safety procedures. Anyone could go in and “accidentally” spill the Anthrax X or take it. If the Denver Dispatch publishes more articles on out secret laboratory, then they could tell our enemies about all of our past biological weapons testing and the future of biological weapons testing. That would be a safety violation against our nation!

We believe the Supreme Court should forbid the newspaper from publishing further articles about biological warfare research at the Boulder Research Laboratory.

The first reason we believe the Supreme Court should forbid the newspaper to publish further articles about biological warfare research at the Boulder Research Laboratory is because of the past Supreme Court decision in Schenck v. United States, in 1919.

This case was about whether it was constitutional for Charles Schenck to print anti-war and anti-draft leaflets and distribute them.

Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote as part of the majority, “What someone is constitutionally allowed to do depends upon the time and place in which it is done. . .Things which we allow in peacetime are sometimes too dangerous to allow in wartime.”

We believe this applies to the Denver Dispatch case because the Denver Dispatch is writing about our secret laboratory in wartime. Just like Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “. . .things which we allow in peacetime are sometimes to dangerous to allow in wartime.”

The second reason we believe the Supreme Court should forbid the newspaper to publish further articles about biological warfare research at the Boulder Research Laboratory is because of the past Supreme Court decision in Near v. Minnesota in 1931.

This case was about whether it is constitutional for Jay Near and Howard Guilford to publish a racist newspaper, The Saturday Press.

Justice Hughes wrote as part of the majority that “. . .there are times when the government should be able to stop someone from publishing information. These times when the government should be allowed to do this…are extremely rare.”

We believe this applies to the Denver Dispatch case because the Denver Dispatch is writing about something we are doing that is supposed to be secrets. This is just like how Mr. Near wrote about racism and the Supreme Court banned him from writing more articles.

The third reason we believe the Supreme Court should forbid the newspaper from publishing further articles about biological warfare research at the Boulder Research Laboratory is because of the past Supreme Court decision in New York Times v. United States in 1971.

This case was about whether it was constitutional for the New York Times to publish the “Pentagon Papers,” a series of articles regarding the government’s position on the Vietnam War.

Justice Blackmun issued a dissenting opinion. He wrote, “Each section of the Constitution is important and I do not believe that the First Amendment is so important that it stands above the other sections. The Supreme Court had never believed that First Amendment rights are always the most important values.”

We agree with Justice Blackmum and how the First Amendment does not stand above the rest of the Constitution. In the Preamble it is stated that the government’s responsibility is to protect the nation.

The last reason we believe the Supreme Court should remove the court order that forbids the Denver Dispatch to publish articles about biological warfare at the Boulder Research Laboratory is because of the what is written in the United States Constitution.

It is written that that the government “should insure domestic tranquility and provide for the common defense.”

We believe this applies to the Denver Dispatch case because, in plain language, it says, “defend the nation as a whole from foreign enemies.” If the Denver Dispatch keeps on publishing, our enemies will find out everything about our secret lab.

You have heard the arguments from the respondents, the United States government. We ask the Justices to uphold the constitutional right of the government to protect the national security by blocking the Denver Dispatch articles on biological warfare research.

Robotic Arm Performs Brain Surgery (N)

Article posted May 28, 2008 at 04:14 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 315

Have you ever had a brain surgery done on you? Well, in Canada they made a robotic arm that does it for them and it is better. While the arm performs the surgery the doctors can watch and see all the affected areas! It must be a lot easier to find out where the affected areas are. The robot uses real surgery tools so it’s like it is a real doctor doing the surgery. The robot does not only do brain surgery it does most surgeries. The robot has already taken out an egg-shaped tumor out of patient 21-year old Paige Nickason.

This is really cool. It wouldn’t be cool if the robot messed up or something. Then the patient would die!

Hmmm - Nice Car! (N)

Article posted May 16, 2008 at 04:11 PM GMT0 • comment (3) • Reads 600

Have you ever been to South Africa? Well, if you have have you wanted to take pictures of exotic animals? Swiss tourists Rico Beltrame and his sister Angela did and they went to the Hluhluwe Umfolozi Nature Reserve trying to look for wild animals. What they saw was a little too close for comfort! While they were looking, they saw a heard of elephants and decided to take some pictures of them. Turns out one of them just happened to walk right over to them and lie it’s big trunk on the roof of the car. From a warning from a park ranger, they turned off their engine. After about 5 minutes the elephant walked away.

That must have been really scary and cool at the same time. I would be pretty scared but be really amazed at the same time? What would you be?

Have you ever seen a unicycle? A motorcycle? Well, 18-year old Ben Gulak made a bike that is like a unicycle but it’s a motorcycle! Since it is a “green” mobile it runs on a battery powered motor. It takes 2 and a half hour to charge its battery using a home outlet!

I would like to have one of those because it is easy to charge and It looks cool. I wonder how much money it would be. . . ? I bet it would be a LOT because there isn’t a lot of them. It must be pretty cool to ride one of those. If there was a lot of them would you want to have one and show it off?

Global warming causes lakes to disappear in Chile (N)

Article posted April 18, 2008 at 03:32 PM GMT0 • comment (2) • Reads 429

Have you ever seen a pool with all the water leaking out? Well, that’s what happened at a lake in Chili. Scientists think that it was caused by a glacier that made a 5-mile long tunnel that let all the water out overnight. All the river that was let out of that river was dumped into another one very close by. This isn’t the only time this happened. Not even a year ago this happened to a glacier lake near the Andes Mountains. Both Lakes have regained some of there water but not all of it.

I think that’s pretty weird but cool…. How does a glacier make a 5-mile long tunnel? The weirdest part is that they got some of their water back! I wonder how that happened….
