[Editor's Note: The 2007-2008 students have just graduated 5th grade. They have been in school for about six years. In another six years they will be a senior in high school. Believe it or not, they are about half way through their public schooling life! Below is a postcard they wrote to their "12th grade self." It will be mailed it to them in June 2014!]

Score to the Future (A)

Article posted June 9, 2008 at 06:58 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 412

Are you always bored, have nothing to do, and always stuffing yourself with any food you find? Do you ever wonder if you’ll ever get fat with all that junk you eat? Do want to get to be something in life? Well, I could answer all that and the answer to all that is playing sports. You just sit down and listen how playing sports can answer all that.

First of all, playing sports is fun. It keeps your mind off anything. You can run, kick, jump, all day long and you’ll have fun. If you get on a team and play a game and you lose you’ll be thinking, “Wow that was fun even though I lost.” One day I was sitting on the couch watching T.V and I looked out on my street and there were people playing basketball. I thought, “That looks fun. If basketball is fun that probably means any sport is fun!”

In addition, playing sports keeps your body in shape. Play all day and keep in shape all day. You can work out without knowing you’re actually doing it! If you don’t keep your body in shape you won’t have a chance of out running a turtle. Any sport involves exercising any part of the body like running, throwing, catching, pulling, etc., etc.

Most importantly, you could get opportunities in life. If you try your best you get to be a professional. You never know! Mom told me that I should go play a sport because it could take me places I don’t even know of. You never know what you could get out of it. A sport is like a road to your future, if you play your best all the way through!

I hope that answers all of your questions. Playing sports gives you opportunities, keeps your body in shape, and lets you have fun! Go make a touchdown, score, and all that. So, what I’m trying to say is:
GO PLAY SPORTS!

California Sixth-Grader Aids Fellow Skateboarders (A)

Article posted June 3, 2008 at 02:45 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 450

Quentin Fava is an ordinary 12 year old, loves skateboarding, and lives in San Francisco, California. In his town a new skate park just opened. There are many kids who don’t have skateboards because they can’t afford it. Well, Quentin has about 5 skateboards and when he heard that kids can’t afford a skateboard he decided to donate all his skateboards. He put out fliers that said if anyone wants to donate their skateboards for other people. What he got for an answer was a big fat yes. He helped a lot of people to get skateboards. If you are interested call 707-938-5500. (It’s a real number.)

Wow, that's really nice of him.

The Constitution Works: Oral Arguement for the Denver Dispatch (A)

Article posted May 29, 2008 at 02:19 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 393

[Editor's note: "The Constitution Works" is a role-playing exercise that gives students a chance to learn about the United States Constitution and government. The students role play a hypothetical court case, Denver Dispatch v. United States. Students take on roles as a lawyer or Supreme Court Justice. They think about what is more important: the freedom of the newspaper to print what it wants OR the government's duty to protect our nation's security. Read more about the Constitution Works program HERE.

May it please the court; we are the petitioners, representing the Denver Dispatch newspaper.

We appear before you today to ask the Supreme Court to remove the court order that forbids the Denver Dispatch from publishing articles about biological warfare at the Boulder Research Laboratory.

This case is all about how the government is trying to prevent us from publishing the Denver Dispatch articles about the government’s biological lab. The government does not want the public to know about everything in the Denver Dispatch articles because it would give out to much information about the Biological Warfare Research Area. The government believes that it will cause more war than what is going on. We believe we are informing the public, and the government is not trying to protect the United States. It is trying to protect itself from being ashamed. We believe the Supreme Court should remove the court order that forbids the Denver Dispatch to publish articles about biological warfare at the Boulder Research Laboratory.

The first reason we believe the Supreme Court should remove the court order that forbids the Denver Dispatch to publish articles about biological warfare at the Boulder Research Laboratory is because of the past Supreme Court decision in Schenck v. United States, in 1919.

This case was about if it was Constitutional for Charles Shenck to print leaflets that encouraged people not to go to war or be drafted into it.

Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote as part of the majority, “Are the words that are said or written used in such a way that they cause a clear and present danger. . . ?”

We believe this applies to the Denver Dispatch case because the government is not sure if the publishing of the Denver Dispatch articles on biological warfare will cause a clear danger to the public. We are just informing them and trying to keep the public safe.

The second reason we believe the Supreme Court should remove the court order that forbids the Denver Dispatch to publish articles about biological warfare at the Boulder Research Laboratory is because of the past Supreme Court decision in Near v. Minnesota in 1931.

This case was about whether Near was allowed to publish a racist newspaper. The paper criticized many people.

Justice Hughes wrote as part of the majority that, “We have to let the press or anyone publish what they want, even if what they publish is bad. . . .it is up to the publisher of a paper and not the government to decide whether to publish something or not….”

We believe this applies to the Denver Dispatch case because we have the right to publish any thing we want. It was written in Amendment One of the Constitution.

The third reason we believe the Supreme Court should remove the court order that forbids the Denver Dispatch to publish articles about biological warfare at the Boulder Research Laboratory is because of the past Supreme Court decision in New York Times v. United States in 1971.

This case was about the government wanting to stop the New York Times from publishing because they said that the New York Times is giving out personal information (the Pentagon Papers) about wartime. But the New York Times argued the First Amendment says we can publish what we want.

Justice Black wrote as part of the majority, “The injunction to stop publication of the Pentagon Papers is wrong, and violates the First Amendment. ‘National Security’ is a broad and unclear phrase.”

Justice Brennan agreed: “Under the First Amendment there can be no blocking of freedom of the press based on educated guesses that some danger might come about.”

We believe this applies to the Denver Dispatch case because the government might think that the articles will cause a type of danger, but it is not clear or present.

The last reason we believe the Supreme Court should remove the court order that forbids the Denver Dispatch to publish articles about biological warfare at the Boulder Research Laboratory is because of the what is written in the United States Constitution.

It is written that in the Constitution that “Congress is not allowed to make any laws that stop people from speaking, printing, writing, or broadcasting on television or radio what they want to say. . . .”

We believe that this applies to the Denver Dispatch because the government is trying to stop us from printing our articles about biological warfare. We believe that is taking away our freedom of the press. What the government is trying to do is unconstitutional.

You have heard the arguments from the petitioner, the Denver Dispatch. We ask the Justices to uphold the freedom of the press granted in the First Amendment and to allow the newspaper to continue to publish the articles about biological warfare research.

Dormant volcano Erupts in Chile (N)

Article posted May 19, 2008 at 02:17 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 465

Just in! A volcano just erupted in Chile! A dormat volcano just erupted and its shooting smoke everywere! The volcano hasn't erupted since 9,000 years ago and it just came alive. Nobody knows when the volcano is suppossed to stop but they're predicting its not going to be anytime soon! Even if the volcano dies down it will leave severe damages and can leave some areas with toxic waste or fumes that are dangerous. The people who lived near the volcano were evacuated and they're wondering when they can go home!

I feel so sorry for the people who lost their homes. That is really sad for the people of Chile. Wow, I cant belive that a volcano hasn't erupted in about 9,000 years ago. I wonder if the volcano will ever stop soon.

Beautiful Bull Dog (N)

Article posted May 2, 2008 at 03:39 PM GMT0 • comment (2) • Reads 702

People with their dogs rushed to Des Moines, Iowa to compete in Iowa’s Famous Dog Show. Buddy the Bulldog, along with his owner Drake, won 1st prize as the most beautiful dog in the show. Out of 18,000 other dogs, he won as the most beautiful bulldog. Drake did everything to get him into shape for this event. Buddy’s mom and his owner were soooo proud of Buddy.

I think that some dog shows are very cruel. They make them dress up in uncomfortable clothes and make them do horrible tricks. I would never do that to any of my dogs. Some owners just buy pets because they think they could make money out of them. But the only good thing about dog shows is that the dogs sort of get appreciated.

Robot restaurant (N)

Article posted April 18, 2008 at 03:33 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 426

You are usually used to having to ask a waitress/waiter bring you what you want to eat, right? In Germany they put away all the waitresses/waiters and replaced all of them with robots. Now all the people that went to this restaurant in Germany ordered any food they wanted just by programming the robot to bring them the food. The restaurant still has chefs. So the robots bring the order as fast as they can.

That’s really cool to order food by a touch of a button. The good thing is that the restaurant doesn’t have to pay the robots, just buy them.

These Old People Sure can Rock!! (N)

Article posted April 11, 2008 at 03:32 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 349

These senior citizens in London go to this theater to dance to the latest rock music and dance till they break their backs, and they add their touch to the music. Instead of taking care of their grandsons, they're dancing till they break all their bones.

Wow, I never knew old people can rock. I thought they dance to old fashion music. But they don’t, they can actually rock. Now I know why my grandparents want to listen to my ipod. ROCK ON!!!!

Rescued Deer (N)

Article posted April 4, 2008 at 03:57 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 346

A poor baby deer was lost from his family and lost his way home. The deer got stuck between two beach huts. It couldn’t get any worse, the poor deer was chased by wild dogs and went racing near the beach. Luckily, two fishermen saw the deer and took it to the vet.

Wow, I would be frightened if I was that deer, being lost from my family, being chased, and being picked up by two strangers. I know that deer will remember that day as a nightmare.

A poem (A)

Article posted March 27, 2008 at 02:33 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 362

Forget it
you must be kidding
I can’t write
I’m cold
I have no ideas
I’m too lazy
I got something to do
I'm too tired
poetry is lame
I just don’t feel like it
Time's up? Uh oh!
All I have is a dumb list of excuses.
You like it? Really? No kidding.
Thanks a lot. Would you like to see another one?
