[Editor's Note: The 2007-2008 students have just graduated 5th grade. They have been in school for about six years. In another six years they will be a senior in high school. Believe it or not, they are about half way through their public schooling life! Below is a postcard they wrote to their "12th grade self." It will be mailed it to them in June 2014!]

Do you like to play sports?
Do you like to play soccer?
Well, you should play soccer.
First of all, you should play soccer because you can get active by running around a lot on the field, back and fourth, back and fourth. In my game of rec soccer I played mid-field. I had to run up where forward played and back where defense played. I always got so tired by the end of the first half.
Another reason why you should play soccer is because you could have a future by playing a lot. If you practice a lot you can become a professional soccer player. Instead of you paying for yourself to play, they pay you for playing! Some professional soccer players get paid millions of dollars. At the end of the season (that’s about 3 or 4 months) C. Ronaldo, a pro, gets paid 10.2 million and Ronaldinho, another pro, gets paid 11.4 million.
The best reason why you should play soccer is because it is really fun. You get to show your skills and try to score and you get happy if you score. I remember once I was at my game and we played on a good field. That day was the best day because I made a record five goals and I made an assist because I crossed it to the goal box. It was going in but somebody on my team just hit it in. I didn’t really care because I scored five goals and we won.
So go make money, have fun, and get exercise by going to play soccer!

Have you ever tried to complete the Rubik Cube puzzle? Well, a boy completed it in just 13 seconds. Then he did in 13 seconds again, and he did it blind folded. He said he got his first Rubik Cube puzzle when he was twelve. Then he began to practice a lot.
Wow, he can already complete it. Once I tried to complete it. I couldn’t so I got so mad that I threw it at the wall. It broke into pieces. I fixed it, but I put it back together so it looked like I completed it. And once I took the stickers off and put them back in with the others that were the same color.

The Constitution Works: Oral Arguement for the Government (A)

[Editor's note: "The Constitution Works" is a role-playing exercise that gives students a chance to learn about the United States Constitution and government. The students role play a hypothetical court case, Denver Dispatch v. United States. Students take on roles as a lawyer or Supreme Court Justice. They think about what is more important: the freedom of the newspaper to print what it wants OR the government's duty to protect our nation's security. Read more about the Constitution Works program HERE.
May it please the court; we are the respondents, representing the United States government.
We appear before you today to ask the Supreme Court to uphold the court order that the lower court and the appeals court imposed on the Denver Dispatch newspaper.
This case is about the Denver Dispatch telling everyone and our enemies about our secret laboratory near Boulder, Colorado. They also show a picture of the secret lab. They tell about the biological weapons that we are developing. They also tell about the laboratories and our safety procedures. Anyone could go in and “accidentally” spill the Anthrax X or take it. If the Denver Dispatch publishes more articles on out secret laboratory, then they could tell our enemies about all of our past biological weapons testing and the future of biological weapons testing. That would be a safety violation against our nation!
We believe the Supreme Court should forbid the newspaper from publishing further articles about biological warfare research at the Boulder Research Laboratory.
The first reason we believe the Supreme Court should forbid the newspaper to publish further articles about biological warfare research at the Boulder Research Laboratory is because of the past Supreme Court decision in Schenck v. United States, in 1919.
This case was about whether it was constitutional for Charles Schenck to print anti-war and anti-draft leaflets and distribute them.
Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote as part of the majority, “What someone is constitutionally allowed to do depends upon the time and place in which it is done. . .Things which we allow in peacetime are sometimes too dangerous to allow in wartime.”
We believe this applies to the Denver Dispatch case because the Denver Dispatch is writing about our secret laboratory in wartime. Just like Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “. . .things which we allow in peacetime are sometimes to dangerous to allow in wartime.”
The second reason we believe the Supreme Court should forbid the newspaper to publish further articles about biological warfare research at the Boulder Research Laboratory is because of the past Supreme Court decision in Near v. Minnesota in 1931.
This case was about whether it is constitutional for Jay Near and Howard Guilford to publish a racist newspaper, The Saturday Press.
Justice Hughes wrote as part of the majority that “. . .there are times when the government should be able to stop someone from publishing information. These times when the government should be allowed to do this…are extremely rare.”
We believe this applies to the Denver Dispatch case because the Denver Dispatch is writing about something we are doing that is supposed to be secrets. This is just like how Mr. Near wrote about racism and the Supreme Court banned him from writing more articles.
The third reason we believe the Supreme Court should forbid the newspaper from publishing further articles about biological warfare research at the Boulder Research Laboratory is because of the past Supreme Court decision in New York Times v. United States in 1971.
This case was about whether it was constitutional for the New York Times to publish the “Pentagon Papers,” a series of articles regarding the government’s position on the Vietnam War.
Justice Blackmun issued a dissenting opinion. He wrote, “Each section of the Constitution is important and I do not believe that the First Amendment is so important that it stands above the other sections. The Supreme Court had never believed that First Amendment rights are always the most important values.”
We agree with Justice Blackmum and how the First Amendment does not stand above the rest of the Constitution. In the Preamble it is stated that the government’s responsibility is to protect the nation.
The last reason we believe the Supreme Court should remove the court order that forbids the Denver Dispatch to publish articles about biological warfare at the Boulder Research Laboratory is because of the what is written in the United States Constitution.
It is written that that the government “should insure domestic tranquility and provide for the common defense.”
We believe this applies to the Denver Dispatch case because, in plain language, it says, “defend the nation as a whole from foreign enemies.” If the Denver Dispatch keeps on publishing, our enemies will find out everything about our secret lab.
You have heard the arguments from the respondents, the United States government. We ask the Justices to uphold the constitutional right of the government to protect the national security by blocking the Denver Dispatch articles on biological warfare research.

Are you scared of big storms? Well, in the state of Alabama there was a tornado and a camera caught the whole thing on tape. The tornado hit a parking lot and cars where flung into the air. In North Carolina there where strong winds. They blew planes off the tarmac at the airport. Lots of homes were blown down (destroyed). One person was killed in the city of Greensboro and three people where injured in the storms.
Wow!! Cars where flung in the air?! I wonder how high and I wonder if a car hit anything else. I also have another question that I’m thinking, what is the top number of people that have been killed in a storm, or something similar to that?

Are you afraid of sharks? Well, in California a shark attacked a man named Dave Martin, aged 66, was killed by a rare great white shark while he was training for a triathlon. Eight miles of beaches were closed because they were going to hunt it down. Only one person was killed in a shark attack last year.
WOW=http://=http://!! Only one person was killed in a shark attack last year. I thought there would be more shark attacks in one year. And I never knew there were sharks in beaches.

Do you like accidents and when people die in them? Well, in Ecuador there was an accident. People think that the bus hit a truck and a dozen survivors were taken to the hospital. There were three women who died. The women who died were: Indira Swann, 18, of Berks, Lizzie Pincock, 19, of Somerset, Rebecca Logie, 19, of Lancs, Emily Sadler, 19, of Hertfordshire, and Sarah Howard, 26, from Cheshire.
Wow,five people died in a bus accident. There is usually only about three people that die. Another thing that is weird, only girls died no boys. There must be a reason.

Wild wind whips across Australia (N)

Has there ever been a big storm where you live? Well, in Australia there was a big storm. It blew a lot of things and it ripped off a lot of roofs from houses. Thousands of homes lost power. A lot of trees were blown down. A lot of people thought it was the worst weather ever.
I agree because what I think is a big storm is when houses and trees are blown down and there's a lot of garbage everywhere. One thing I always think is going to happen when there is a big storm here is that the tree from my backyard is going to fall down on the house.
What do you think should happen to make it a big storm?
