August Already???

Article posted August 9, 2012 at 02:12 PM GMT0 • comment (8) • Reads 220074

Hello students!!!

Is it August already? It must be a mistake! No matter how I change the calendar date on the computer, it seems that the sunset of the summer is fast approaching. That is not to say that there isn't a lot of time left, so if there is some way that you wanted to spend your summer, something that you wanted to accomplish, or someplace that you wanted to visit, get to it!

I miss you all, and I am looking forward to seeing you in about a month!

DUMP THE TEA!

Article posted May 30, 2012 at 05:24 PM GMT0 • comment (3) • Reads 51631

On the evening of December 16, 1773, the patriot Samuel Adams led three groups of fifty men disguised as Mohawk Indians. They went aboard the three ships, broke open the tea chests, and tossed them into the harbor. This became known as the “Boston Tea Party”.

Using your blog, make believe it is 1773. Write a journal entry as if you were a patriot who took part in the Boston Tea Party. Tell why you did it and how you feel about what you did. Make sure that your writing is correct for that time period, and make sure that is appropriate for fourth grade.

Make sure that you triple-check your blog and your comments for proper capitalization, grammar, punctuation and spelling!

Childhood obesity is a major concern for our nation. We have been learning what foods are better for us than others and ways to make sure that we have the nutrients that we need to grow strong.

Is there anything available in our school that you would like to see eliminated because it isn’t healthy? Is there anything that would like to see available to us in our school that you don’t see now? If you could make one day of the week “Our Healthy Day”, what would the menu look like? Name 3-5 items that you think the students in our school would enjoy and would also keep us healthy.

Make sure that you triple-check your blog and your comments for proper capitalization, grammar, punctuation and spelling!

The past few weeks our class, along with fourth grade students all over New York State, took the English Language Arts and Math Assessments.

What advice do you have for next year’s fourth grade students? Please do not be specific about what was on the test itself, but think about what strategies and skills you had to use. Do you think that you were ready? Was there anything about them that surprised you? Do you think that tests like this are useful? Why or why not?

Collaboration is a fancy word for to working together with one another; to cooperate. Our class will be collaborating this week with Ms. Marvullo’s fourth grade class at Center Street School. Earlier this year, they came to visit us to see our “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” music video. They have invited us to make our own shirts for Earth Day, and it will no doubt be awesome.

This got me thinking about collaborating with other students in other schools. Center Street is pretty close to us which makes it pretty easy to get there. Imagine that if distance was not an issue. What part of the world would you like to collaborate with? Is there a particular country, state, or city that you would like to connect with? What kind of project would you like to do? Try to tie it into something that we study in fourth grade.

Never “Too Tired” To Recycle!

Article posted March 26, 2012 at 03:25 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 3393

Our class was so lucky to have Mrs. Dewalters here showing us how to recycle old bicycle tires into belts and leashes! We had such a great time! Thank you again, Mrs. Dewalters! We now know that too many tires end up in landfills taking up space, and we were to actually make a difference. What was your favorite part of the day?

Not only was making those belts fun, it wasn’t that difficult as we created them step by step. The most challenging thing was coming up with the idea to do it.

Think about the things that we use and throw away in our lives. Can you think of something that we would somehow be able to reuse in a different way? Maybe it could be clothing, or a tool, or a decoration… but I want you to really think about it. Do you have any ideas?

Make sure that you triple-check your blog and your comments for proper capitalization, grammar, punctuation and spelling!

Hey Birds! Take Me South!

Article posted March 5, 2012 at 05:27 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 7841

How incredible was our visit from a real “Indian”, or first American named Uaian! We learned a lot about Native American culture, we watched movies showing how they were treated, their dances, music, stories and even their games. My favorite was the story about how the turtle got the cracks in its shell.

What do you think was the most important of what we learned? What would you want to tell the world to educate them most about what we learned? Would you recommend this experience be brought back next year to Searingtown? Why or why not? Be specific and support your choice with details.

Challenge from Mr. D – If it were possible, what other culture would you most like to learn about from a guest speaker? For example, if you wanted to learn Eskimo culture from a real person speaking to us of Eskimo origin.

BYOD Yay or Nay?

Article posted February 13, 2012 at 08:06 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 8502

Many members of our class own personal electronic devices, and we have been talking about the idea of schools embracing “BYOD” to help students learn the skills that they need for the 21st century. First, look over the “BYOD & Education” article that we read together in school. It should be in your homework folder. Write a blog article persuading your reader to agree with your opinion on the following question:

Should students be allowed to bring their own personal technology devices to school for use in learning? Why or why not? Support your claim with details from your research (the article).

Article posted February 8, 2012 at 07:00 PM GMT0 • comment (2) • Reads 3220

This blog assignment is a fun one. It comes from two students in our class; Mia and Shivani.
They want to know:
If you were a super hero, what power would you want?
Why would you want that power?
Would you be good or evil?
What would your name be?
What color would your suit be, and what would it say on it?
Where would your secret hideout be?

I want to know:
What does this super hero character that I have created say about me? About what kind of person that you are or that you want to be?

Thanks for the idea girls!

Take a look at http://www.history.com/shows/the-universe/interactives/interactive-universe and http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/astronomy/. Griffin wants to know what your favorite planet is. He also wants you to write 4 or 5 facts that helped you decide on that particular planet. This week’s blog comes from one of our own students – Brandon M. We have learned about many of New York’s official things. Like the official muffin. This week’s blog is about picking your favorite thing about our state. Take a look at http://www.enchantedlearning.com/usa/states/newyork/. There is a list of fun facts about New York. Choose one that is your favorite or most interesting to you. You also have to write why that’s your favorite thing. If you have more than one, go ahead and write it. Then write what would you change and why. If you think there are should be no changes then write why. Then as a challenge you can change the name of any of the 5 boroughs.

New Year and Better Me!

Article posted January 3, 2012 at 06:37 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 34253

Happy New Year to our class and families! Many people make “resolutions” for the New Year to identify ways that they can improve something about themselves over the coming year. I want you to think about your “Searingtown Resolution.”

What way or ways would you like to improve as a fourth grade student this year? This can be academic (like study habits) or social (what kind of person that you are). How will you go about achieving this? Do you think that you can do it? How will you check to see if you have?

Is there another way that you could let students know how they are doing?

Article posted December 12, 2011 at 05:12 PM GMT0 • comment (2) • Reads 14327

This week we took a field trip to the Garvies Point Museum and Preserve. We have been exploring the landform and geography of New York, and through this experience we were shown how the land affected their lives.
Let’s think about what we experienced there and answer some questions in your article. What was your favorite part of Garvies Point? Why did you choose that? Was there anything that surprised you about Native Americans? Would you recommend that next year’s fourth graders go on this trip as well? Why or why not? Support your opinion with details from the trip.
I would also ask that you look at some of the WONDERFUL past blog entries of our class and make some comments to your classmates. We have done a very good job of expressing ourselves through our blog articles, and it is always great to get some feedback from your friends.

Article posted December 5, 2011 at 12:29 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 1773

I cannot believe that the first marking period is over already!!! Can you believe it is now December??? As you know, last week our class received their report cards.

How do you think your year is going? If you were the teacher, how would you grade yourself? What areas do you feel that you became stronger in? What areas would you like to most improve in over the next marking period?

Here are the most difficult parts of this blog. What can you do to make these improvements? I want you to really think about yourself as a fourth grade student, and try your best. If you could add an area on the report card that you think that you are especially good at, what are would that be?

Hey! That's My Chair!

Article posted November 28, 2011 at 07:08 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 13174

Our class is now in the middle of writing our realistic fiction stories, using Peter’s Chair by Ezra Jack Keats as the mentor text. In this book, Peter's Chair is the story of a boy named Peter whose parents have just had a new baby. Peter walks around the house and notices that his parents are fussing with the new baby and painting his baby furniture pink! Peter's jealousy caused him to make a serious decision. He packs some things, including his little chair which he is determined his parents will not paint pink, and decides to run away.
Think of times in your life that you have been jealous of someone because of something they had. What were you jealous of? How were you able to control your feelings?

Imagine you were Peter. What would you have done if you had to share your belongings to your new little sister? Has something similar happened to you?

I am thankful that you have all been working so hard this school year. I am thankful that you had the creative energy and excitement to help me to create such an incredible music video. I want to wish you and your families and restful Thanksgiving weekend! If you are bored or you just feel like blogging, please feel free to leave a comment to this article. You can talk about what you are thankful for (in school or outside of school), any thoughts about this school year.. whatever you want. Of course, no personal information.

Comment Lean Too

Article posted November 15, 2011 at 06:26 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 5072

Our class is now enjoying the book Jelly Belly, by one of our favorite authors, Mr. Robert Kimmel Smith. In this book, a young boy named Ned is sent to a diet camp by his family to help him lose weight. Ned admits to the readers that while he does want to lose weight, he does not want it enough. Wanting it enough means not snacking in the middle of the night, exercising and dieting responsibly.

Think of ways that you would like to make some improvement in yourself. This can be a physical or a character trait. Now think of what you would have to do to prove that you want it enough. What would you have to do or not do?

Imagine that you were one of the bunkmates at Camp Lean-Too. What advice would you have for Ned to help him?

Please also comment on two or three blogs of other students in our class. Make sure that your comments are appropriate and respectful. Make sure you leave your “return address”. Follow the direction sheet if you have any questions.

Make sure that you TRIPLE check your blog and your comments for proper capitalization, grammar, punctuation and spelling!

What's Next For Room 25?

Article posted November 7, 2011 at 03:47 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 14715

Our music video is coming out so incredible, and we can’t wait for its big premier next week. This week’s blog article has me thinking out loud about some special projects that we can explore together. There are so many areas of study in fourth grade that we can have a lot of fun with. Off the top of my head, there is recycling, the Native Americans of New York State, the solar system, division, electricity, and (my favorite) the American Revolution.

We have a great deal of creativity and energy in our classroom, and I really hope that we will be able to use those as tools for our learning. Remember that with great projects comes great responsibility (Spiderman's uncle said something like that). Along with the responsibility, maturity also goes hand in hand. I can't wait to start working on them! My head is already full of some really cool ideas!

What other kind of projects should we undertake this year? It can be anything! We’re looking for ideas!

You may also add any other information that you would like.

Gimme a Word Besides Mature!

We have had a great start to the school year, and we have been exploring a lot of new vocabulary. Think about how the two months of school has been for you:

Welcome to Our New Bloggers!

Article posted October 18, 2011 at 04:46 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 2228

Greetings and salutations to our new fourth grade class of 1112. Welcome to our class blog. What is a blog? A blog is short for "web" and "log". It is our place on the Internet where we can communicate with others and express ourselves safely and have some fun too!

So far, we have customized our blog pages and added avatars that are our digital selves. We really did a GREAT job with them!

Here are the questions I want you to think about for this first blog:

1) What do you think will be the biggest challenges for you this year in fourth grade?

2) If you could anything (within reason!) that you want in fourth grade using technology (besides making our music video), what would you want to do?

Make sure that you double check your blog for proper capitalization, grammar, punctuation and spelling!

This is the final blog assignment of the school year!

In “Toliver’s Secret”, Ellen’s grandfather said “We get over fear by doing things we think we cannot do. These are trying times, Ellen. Many people are doing things they thought they never could do.”

Write about a time that you have taken grandfather’s advice and faced a fear. Use details, time-order words, dialogue and follow the rules of grammar to tell the story.

Make sure that you triple-check your blog and your comments for proper capitalization, grammar, punctuation and spelling!

Our Reflections

Can you believe it is June already? I don’t have to tell you all what a great class you have been. Throughout the school year, we have all faced challenges and grown as a result. We have worked together and made new friends. As you move to fifth grade, I hope that you will fondly remember your fourth grade experiences and have some wonderful memories. This is your opportunity to say farewell to fourth grade. Think about yourself as both a student and an individual. Think of those challenges that you have faced. How have you changed for the better? Think of a few. In what ways would you still want to improve? How can you accomplish this? What was your favorite memory of fourth grade? I want you to really think about this and reflect upon your year. You can reflect on anything that we did this year, or say whatever you want.

Make sure that you triple-check your blog and your comments for proper capitalization, grammar, punctuation and spelling!

The Declaration of Independence was one of our dearest and most famous documents in the history of our country. In it, the members of the Continental Congress declared the colonies free from Great Britain and stated many of the reasons that caused this separation.

Imagine that YOU are sitting alongside Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and the other members of the Congress, but YOU are the one that has been chosen to write it. Thinking about our activity with the jelly beans, what we have read and movies that we have watched, write your own Declaration to the king. Tell him what YOU want and the events that have happened or things that he has done that has caused you to feel this way. Try to be historically accurate, but you may add your own feelings and emotions.

Do you think that you would have been brave (or foolish!) enough to sign your full real name to the Declaration knowing that it would go to King George? Why or why not?

How Can We Have a Health-ateria?

Childhood obesity is a major concern for our nation. Our First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign addresses many aspects of getting us in better physical shape, and one area deal with improving the menu in our schools.

Hail to the King! Or maybe not...

Article posted May 9, 2011 at 11:55 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 4733

After the French and Indian War, Great Britain took on a lot of debt. Paying soldiers their wages and the cost of ammunition, food, and other supplies put a big dent in the King’s royal wallet. As a result, the King placed taxes on several items that the colonists either enjoyed or relied on. These taxes were monies that were paid to the King in addition to the cost. If you lived in colonial New York, would you have been a loyalist (loyal to Great Britain) or a patriot (against British rule)? Why? Be specific in your reasoning!

We have just returned from Spring Break! What a great time it was! Now we are back and ready to continue learning! I was able to read over 100 pages from Roald Dahl’s book “Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator”. I also went to the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn with my family. We saw some great art, and we created crafts for Earth Day. Finally, we went to see the movie “Rio” in 3-D. It was awesome! My favorite character was Luis the dog. I thought that the saliva that hung off his lips was gross, but silly. What did you do on your Spring Break? Be specific, but don’t give out personal information. What was your favorite thing that you did all week?
If you could have done anything that you could have thought of, what would you have chosen? Why did you choose this?

What's Our Mascot?

Article posted February 28, 2011 at 06:39 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 1424

In the book Report to the Principal’s Office, by Jerry Spinelli, Principal Brimlow asks the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades to come up with nominees for a school mascot. A mascot is defined as a person, animal, or object thought to bring luck or used to represent a group with a common public identity, such as a school or sports team.

If Ms. Thomas and I asked you to come up with a mascot for our class, who or what would you nominate? Keep in mind that it should represent who we are as a class and not representing just a few students. Use your imagination! Why did you choose this? How would you try to convince Ms. Thomas, myself, and the rest of the class to agree with you and vote for your suggestion?

My Name is Nick... Nick Name

Article posted February 7, 2011 at 06:38 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 1179

In the book Report to the Principal’s Office, by Jerry Spinelli, some of the characters have nicknames. Dennis Johnson is called “Pickles” both because he loves to wear the color green and from hanging pickles from his family’s Christmas tree when he was younger. Arnold Hummelsdorf is called “Lips” because his lower lip is so large from 40 years of teaching music. On the other hand, there are characters whose nicknames are the opposite of who they are. An example of this is sour faced Elizabeth “Sunny” Wyler.

If you were in the story, what would your nickname be? Why is this nickname perfect for you? Remember that it can be about you or even the exact opposite.

Our class is beginning a Science unit exploring electricity. As we explore this form of energy, please take a look at the world around us. By making observations about our classrooms and our homes, it is clear that electricity is a big part of our lives.

Think about the following questions:
• Do you think that we depend too much on electricity? Why or why not?
• What do you think life in your home would be like if we didn't have electricity?
• What do you think life in school would be like if we didn’t have electricity?
• If you were an inventor and were creating something new, what would you make it run on instead of electricity and why? Support your choice with juicy reasons! Think about what we learned about renewable vs. nonrenewable resources.

Middle School Bloggin

Article posted January 25, 2011 at 03:38 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 3489

We have just begun a new book called Report to the Principal’s Office by Jerry Spinelli. We enjoyed one of his other books earlier in the year. In this book, we have met Sunny Wyler, a girl that wants desperately to be moved to another school where her best friend Hillary goes. We also met Eddie Mott, a boy that wants to grow up and act more mature in middle school. Unfortunately, he has been tossed around the bus like a football. Finally, we met Salem Brownmiller, a girl that is excited about the world around her and wants to be a writer. She is always looking for a story.

Choose one of those characters. Write a blogging journal entry as if you were them and write about your experiences on the first day of school. Use what you remember from the story. In the next paragraph, write a letter back from Principal Brimlow giving them advice. Remember how much of an ‘optimist’ he is!

Out Of This World!

Article posted January 11, 2011 at 08:43 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 6208

Our class has been exploring the solar system and the constellations of the universe. I thought it would be fun for us to use our knowledge of space and our own creativity to design our own place in space.

If you could make your own planet or constellation (or both if you really want to challenge yourself), what would it be like? If it were a planet, how large would it be? Where would you want it to be in our solar system (between which planets)? Why did you choose that spot? What could you tell us about the planet? What would you name it, and why did you choose that name?

If you choose to create a constellation, what would you name it? What would it be in the shape of? Would it use any of the ‘famous’ stars that we have learned about? Why did you choose this name and shape?

If I could, I would create a constellation Mustangor. It would be in the shape of a running horse, with the Betelgeuse star as the tip of the tail. My planet would be multiplicoria, but I’ll let you guess where I would put it and how it would look!
Here is a fun video that talks about stars and constellations.

Hello students and class families!

I just came across a really cool lookup for literature from Scholastic called the Teacher Book Wizard. If you enter a keyword from either the title of a book or the name of author, it will show you information. This information will give you the title, author, the interest level, other books that might be in the series, and grade level equivalent. While I would not tell you to base all of your choices by using it, it is another great tool that our families and we can use to find that perfect "Just Right" book!

Thank you Carly for helping me to brainstorm the next assignment.

This week, we were visited by a real life author. Even cooler than being writer, she is a graduate of our very own Searingtown School! How awesome! She even showed us a picture of her wearing a Searingtown shirt.

This got me thinking about our class as writers and the challenges that we have faced in creating both narrative and non-narrative writing. If you had to write a book (narrative), what genre of literature would you choose? Would it be a picture book or a chapter book? What would your book be about? You can be as specific as you want, but make sure that it is appropriate for your elementary school audience.

Who Do We Look Up To?

Article posted November 8, 2010 at 06:53 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 890

Role models are people who have the qualities or characteristics that we would like to have. Role models are people who have affected us in a way that makes us want to be better people, and we “look up” to them. Who do you consider to be your role model? You may list 1 or 2.
Why did you choose this person? In what way or ways would you like to be like this person? What can you do to accomplish this?

You may also add any other information that you would like, and you can comment on blog entries of other students in our classroom.

Of course… Make sure that you TRIPLE check your blog and your comments for proper capitalization, grammar, punctuation and spelling!

So What? I am a FOURTH GRADE ROCK STAR!

Article posted November 1, 2010 at 12:39 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 4519

A few of you have asked if we will be doing a music video, as the 3 past classes have done. I have been honest with you when I have replied “I don’t know.” Whether we do one or not will be mostly up to you.
What kind of music do you think we should use? Do you have any songs in mind? What about the fourth grade curriculum? What part of what we are exploring in fourth grade do you think would work really well for a song and music video?

I would also ask that you look at some of the WONDERFUL blog entries (both past and also this week's assignment) of our class and make some comments to your classmates. We have done a very good job of expressing ourselves through our blog articles, and it is always great to get some feedback from your friends.

We have had a great start to the school year, and we have been exploring a lot of new vocabulary. Think about how the first month of school has been for you:

1) If you had to choose ONE word to describe fourth grade so far this year, what word would you choose?
2) Why did you choose this word? Use details to support your choice.

Make sure that you double check your blog for proper capitalization, grammar, punctuation and spelling!

We Are Off and Running in Fourth Grade!

Article posted October 21, 2010 at 05:08 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 1517

Greetings and salutations to our new fourth grade class of 1011. Welcome to our class blog. What is a blog? A blog is short for "web" and "log". It is our place on the Internet where we can communicate with others and express ourselves safely and have some fun too!

This week, we customized our blog pages and added avatars that are our digital selves. We really did a GREAT job with them!

Here are the questions I want you to think about for this first blog:

1) What do you think will be your biggest challenge this year in fourth grade?

2) If you could anything you want in fourth grade using technology, what would you want to do?

Make sure that you double check your blog for proper capitalization, grammar, punctuation and spelling!

I would like to welcome our new class for the 2010-2011 school year! I hope that you will enjoy blogging this year. You will be able to customize your blog page and establish a 'digital home' for your words and thoughts. For now, your blog pages are very plain, blank, and ordinary, but soon they will be reflections of your creativity and who you are as individuals.

I am so excited to welcome you!

I hope that you are all having a great start to the school year. I am also so excited to say that our class's video projects over the past few years have a new home on the Internet. I have created a new youtube account called "mrdugger25". Many of our videos including such great projects as "DMSB", "Empire State of Mind", our trips to Garvies Point and the Long Island Philharmonic, and even our Public Service Announcement projects from last year are all up for your viewing pleasure. Taking a look at them really gives me a great deal of pride for the work that our classes have done. I wonder what the class of 2010/2011 will achieve!

Here is one of my favorites... Empire State of Mind...

The school year is SO CLOSE! Can you believe it? I refuse to admit that summer is almost over.

Anyway... I'm wondering what book or books you are reading or have read this summer. I chose the book "Brian's Hunt" by adventure author Gary Paulsen.

I have always wanted to read a Gary Paulsen book, and my classroom library has quite a few of them including Hatchet (A Newberry Honor Book), The River, and the book that I have chosen.

I am only a few chapters in, but it is about a boy that survived a plane crash and life in the wilderness. He is saved and returns to civilization, but he chooses to go back to the wild and live there. So far, it is very exciting. There is danger everywhere, and all that he has learned helps him to survive.

What are you reading? Comment back if you want. It would be great to hear from you.

Wow. I can’t believe that it is June already. Sometimes it feels as if the school year just started. Our class has explored so much together and worked so hard. We have collaborated together on many projects, and we have done it respectfully and with great excitement. I am so proud of the work that you have done and how you have each grown over the past 10 months.

I hope that as you move on up to fifth grade, you carry the same excitement and thirst for learning that you have demonstrated in our classroom. This is your opportunity to say farewell to fourth grade. You can reflect on anything that we did this year, or say whatever you want. I will miss you all, and I look forward to seeing you again in September. Have a great summer!

Declaration of Blogdependence!

Article posted May 10, 2010 at 09:32 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 17163

The Declaration of Independence was one of our dearest and most famous documents in the history of our country. In it, the members of the Continental Congress declared the colonies free from Great Britain and stated many of the reasons that caused this separation.

Imagine that YOU are sitting alongside Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and the other members of the Congress, but YOU are the one that has been chosen to write it. Thinking about our activity with the Skittles, what we have read and movies that we have watched, write your own Declaration to the king.

Character Connections

Our class has been enjoying the book “Report to the Principal’s Office” by Jerry Spinelli. We have met some very interesting characters such as Eddie Mott, Sunny Wyler, Principal Brimlow, Pickles Johnson, Salem Brownmiller, and “Lips” Hummelsdorf.

Using what you know about these characters, which character or characters are you most like? Why? Support your choice with details both from the text and your own life.

I think that I am most like Principal Brimlow and Eddie Mott. I am like Principal Brimlow because he really tries to always be cheerful and look at the brighter side of things, but at the same time he sees how things really are. I am also like Eddie Mott because I try to make plan things out to make them the way that I want them to be, but sometimes things don’t go exactly as planned despite my best efforts.

Wikisaurus Rex!

Our class has been introduced to our new technology resource – our wikispace. A wiki is a special place on the Internet that allows us all to share “one big writing notebook”. Unlike regular web sites, it allows us to both get and give information on the World Wide Web. We will be using it to research and collect information on electrical safety. We will also be creating scripts, assigning roles, and sharing our ideas. How do you feel about using this new resource?

When we are finished with our Public Service Announcements, what should we do with them? I want you to really think about this, and be as specific as you can.

The last thing I want you to think about is how you feel about this project. This is a project that will allow us to put together our creativity, our technology skills, our research skills, and our organization skills. What do you hope to do or accomplish through this project? Is there anything specific that you would like to learn to do? I truly hope that you will enjoy it.

A Whirlwind Week!

Article posted March 8, 2010 at 10:24 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 5587

Wow! What a great few days!

Monday Night:
First, our class got to meet our native American friend. We learned a lot about Native Americans culture, we watched movies showing how they were treated, their dances, music, stories and even their games.

What do you think was the most important of what we learned? What would you want to tell the world to educate them most about what we learned? Would you recommend this experience be brought back next year? Why or why not? Be specific and support your choice with details.

Tuesday Night
Next, one of our favorite authors came to visit Searingtown – Mr. Robert Kimmel Smith!!! Oh, how we have laughed and cried at the craziness that his characters go through! Even though we learned about him as a writer and where he gets his ideas from, I’m sure we will learn even more!

Is there anything that stands out in your mind from his visit? What was your favorite part? Is there anything that you would have liked to say or ask him if you had another chance to see him?

Wednesday Night
Finally, we attended a concert at the Tilles Center for Performing Arts. We were treated to the Long Island Philharmonic and their wonderful music. It was so exciting to be in such a great big place with an incredible orchestra playing.

What did you think of them? What was your favorite part? If you were asked to say one sentence to describe your experience that day, what would you say? Really think about this, and support your choice with reasons and details!

All due by Friday!

Do I even have to write this anymore??? :)

Our class is now involved in a Science unit exploring electricity. As we construct different types of circuits safely and carefully, we are taking a look at the world around us. By taking a look at our classrooms and our homes, it is clear that electricity is a big part of our lives.

Think about the following questions:
• Do you think that we depend too much on electricity? Why or why not?
• What do you think life would be like if we didn't have electricity?
• If you were an inventor and created something new, what would you rather see it run on instead of electricity and why? Support your choice with juicy reasons!

This is a great public service announcement with some electrical safety tips.

James' Renewable Hope

This blog assignment was inspired by James, a student in our classroom. We have been studying ways that we can be more responsible citizens of planet Earth. We have explored how we can recycle, what we can recycle, and the affects of taking care of both our renewable and nonrenewable resources.

James wants to know if we can identify items in our home that we can make an effort to recycle. Does your family have a recycling plan of any type? He also wants to know if we know of ways that we can help to stop pollution of the Earth.

We surely face some steep challenges, but as we gain knowledge about the consequences of our actions we can make the best choices for a better tomorrow.

For this week, I have assigned the blog as an optional homework. Many of you have really done a beautiful job with your blog entries, and your comments have been respectful and enthusiastic.

I guess my blog article this week will be me thinking out loud about some special projects that we can explore together. There are so many areas of study in fourth grade that we can have a lot of fun with. Off the top of my head, there is recycling, the native americans of New York State, electricity, of (my favorite) the American Revolution.

Who Do You Look Up To?

Where In The World Does Irene Want To Go?

Article posted November 9, 2009 at 10:41 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 1684

The idea for this week’s blog assignment comes from another student in our class. We have been exploring the world through maps and globes, and now we are concentrating our focus on our great state of New York.

Irene wants to know where in the world our class would like to visit if given the chance. How long have you wanted to go to this place? Tell us what makes it so very special or interesting to you that you would choose it over every other place in the world. Irene thinks that our class would enjoy it because we could see all of the places that our class wants to go. Does the geography of that place or its location in the world have a part in what kind of place it is? Do its waterways or landforms help it or hurt it for you to visit? Is there one geographic feature that you would really like to see there in person?

I like it too, and I thank Irene for the idea!

You may also add any other information that you would like.

The idea for this week’s blog assignment comes from a student in our class. We are reading The War With Grandpa by Robert Kimmel Smith. We are also reading another of his books Bobby Baseball together as a fun read.

In this book the main character, Peter, has had to give up one of the most precious things; his room. He decides to go to “war” to get it back. Think how you would handle Peter’s situation in your own life. The student that created this blog assignment thinks that this will help us relate the book to our own life and give us a chance to act like the character.

Also, which of his two books have you enjoyed the most so far? After reading these books and learning about him as a writer, would you like to read another one of his books? Why or why not? What have you learned from Robert Kimmel Smith about being a writer?

You may also add any other information that you would like.

Make sure that you TRIPLE check your blog and your comments for proper capitalization, grammar, punctuation and spelling!

I am so glad that our class is using technology is such a great way. We have been able to discuss with each other our hopes, our feelings and literature that we are exploring.

1) If you could create a blog assignment for the class to do, what would you assign? Be specific!

2) Why did you choose this assignment? Why do you think that the class would enjoy it?

I am so proud of the great job that our class is doing with our blogs. The articles and comments are so awesome! This week’s blog is about literature. A big part of fourth grade is getting to know ourselves as readers and exploring the things that good readers do.

Here are the questions I want you to think about this week:

1) What has been your favorite book to read so far this year? This can be one that we have explored as a class or you have read by yourself.

2) What makes that book so much better than all the rest?

3) In what way or ways would you like to grow as a reader this year?

Welcome Class of 0910!!!

Article posted October 6, 2009 at 10:47 PM GMT0 • comment (3) • Reads 3413

Greetings and salutations to my new fourth grade class of 0910.

3) Why is it so important to not be a troll? What can we do to prevent Internet trolls?
Make sure that you double check your blog for proper capitalization, grammar, punctuation and spelling!

To last year's class: I don't know how many of you still check in on our class blog, but a few of you have blogged or commented over this summer.
To my new class coming in: Welcome! I am looking forward to meeting you.

I thought it would be fun to see what we have been up to this summer. I went to Florida to visit Mickey and Goofy. I explored taking photographs of nature. I rode my motorcycle and bicycle around seeing the island through new perspective. All in all, I am having a great summer spending time with family and friends.
What did YOU do? What was your favorite summer moment? Is there anything that you would like to do or experience before school starts again?

Remember that it is NOT over yet! :)

Poetic June

Poetry is a creative and rhythmic way of expressing one’s self. We are exploring various types of poetry, enjoying it as a reader and we will be creating our own!

Choose a form of poetry that we are exploring and think of the following question. It was suggested by one of our students!
Think about the end of the school year and how you are going to feel on the last day of school. What do you want to do before then? How do you feel about soon being a fifth grader? You can use poetic elements like similes, metaphor, alliteration, personification, onomatopoeia, etc. Have fun!

Our “My History Space” has been a huge success! We are creating a wonderful social network full of historical figures. We have blogged as them, created talking avatars, researched information on our wiki and created autobiographies. We have befriended each other and we have created a community dedicated to the age of exploration. We are now creating, scripting, and filming commercials using multimedia applications.

What’s next? Is there anything else that you would like to accomplish? What should we do with this project after it is done? What was your favorite part of the project? What was the most challenging part of the project? Is there any other information that you would like to add?

I Declare This, King George!

Article posted May 19, 2009 at 12:57 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 2150

The Declaration of Independence was one of our dearest and most famous documents in the history of our country. In it, the members of the Continental Congress declared themselves free from Great Britain and stated many of the reasons that caused this separation.

Tell him what YOU want and the events that have happened or things that he has done that has caused you to feel this way.

Challenge! Do you think that you would have been courageous enough to sign your full real name to the Declaration knowing that it would go to to King George? Why or why not?

We have just explored the French and Indian War, and we are now learning about the birth of our nation. Think about how the Native Americans were treated by the French and the British. Think about their values and cultures. Think about how they might have felt about all that was going on over land that was being argued and fought over.

If you were an Iroquois Native American man or woman living in New York State or an Algonquian Native American man or woman living on Long Island, how would you feel? Whose side would you choose and why? What would be your feelings and why? BE SPECIFIC and base your decision on what you have learned.

How incredible was our visit from a real “Indian”, or first American!

Challenge from Mr. D – If it were possible, what other culture would you most like to learn about from a guest speaker? For example, if you wanted to learn Eskimo culture from a real person speaking to us of Eskimo origin.

Our class was fortunate enough to have attended a concert at the Tilles Center for Performing Arts. We were treated to the Long Island Philharmonic and their wonderful music. It was so exciting to be in such a great big place with an incredible orchestra playing. What did you think of them? What was your favorite part? I also took video of our experiences that day. What should we do with it? If you were asked to say one sentence on the video to describe your experience that day, what would you say? Really think about this, and support your choice with reasons and details!

Do You Promise, Mr. President?

Article posted January 20, 2009 at 11:19 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 1281

This week, our great nation is celebrating the inauguration of President Barack Obama. Ever since George Washington in the year 1789, every president has taken an oath of office. It is like a promise that he or she will do their job according to the rules. He or she will say this promise:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Now it is your turn. Think about what the President should promise. Think about his or her responsibilities as our leader. Think about the challenges that face us as a country. If you could write the promise that the President of the United States should say, what would you write? Be specific.

Free Snowy Blog

As our winter break heads closer and closer towards us, I think about what we have accomplished as a class. We have a really great blog and class wikispace. We have created a great Crayfish research project and presented it to our families. We are reading exciting literature and having a lot of fun exploring the world around us and people in history. I am enjoying the enthusiasm and energy that our class brings into our classroom each and every day, and I am thankful to be part of it.

Since we only have a few days in school this week, I made this assignment optional, but I am hoping to read some great entries. I asked you to think about the snow and your memories or thoughts, so here is mine. Last week my family and I went sledding in the snow. It was very cold, but it was a blast. I love the way the wind whips at you so strong it feels like it might even lift you high in the air. The best thing about sledding was the hot chocolate afterwards.

I wish you all a happy, restful and fun winter break, and I hope that you return to school ready to rock and roll because the new year will no doubt be full of more excitement and challenges. Happy New Year!

We used literature, the Internet, our class wiki, Microsoft Photo Story, and Windows Movie Maker as tools and resources.

This week we took a field trip to the Garvies Point Museum and Preserve. We are learning a lot about the Native Americans that once lived in New York.

In a few weeks, our country will elect, or choose, a new president. All citizens of the United States of America have a right and responsibility to be part of it and give their vote. We have been studying character traits of ourselves and characters in literature. Think about the following questions:

1) What character traits are most important to you in the next president? Why?

2) If we to have a government in our classroom, what do you think would be a good job for you to be responsible for? What character trait do you have that would help you to perform this job?

Greetings and salutations to my new fourth grade class of 0809. This is our class blog.

A blog is short for "web" and "log". It is our place on the Internet where we can communicate with others and express ourselves safely and have some fun too!

Here are the questions I want you to think about for this first blog:

1) What do you think will be your biggest challenge this year in fourth grade?

2) If you could anything you want in fourth grade using technology, what would you want to do?

Wow! Is it August already??? I have had a GREAT summer so far. I have spent time with my family, I have done some work on our house, I walked over the Brooklyn Bridge, I am enjoying my new bicycle, I worked on my car, and I have read some great books.

As we enjoy the last few weeks of summer, I can’t help but think about the excitement that September brings. What are your thoughts for the new school year? What are you hoping to achieve? What do you expect from fifth grade?
To any of my soon to be fourth grade students… I say “Get Ready!”

Oh.. and Mr. Edward.. you still owe me a blog.. I don’t forget. Cya in a month!

How is Your Summer Going?

Article posted July 8, 2008 at 02:17 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 6279

Our class voted to keep the blogs open this summer, so we did. Some of us have been blogging, so I decided to ask those of you (who are out there) what is going on?

I just finished my first book for the summer "The Squeaky Wheel" by one of our favorite authors Mr. Robert Kimmel Smith. I really enjoyed it, and to be honest there was one time where I simply couldn't put it down. I actually read about 140 pages in one day! That's what I call a book that sucks you in!

The next book that I am planning on reading is "There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom" by Louis Sachar. It looks very interesting too. I plan on reading maybe another 2 books this summer. What are you doing? Have you read any good books?

Cya in September.

A Fond and Tearful Farewell

Article posted June 27, 2008 at 02:43 AM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 3461

As thoughts of sun and sand start to fill our minds, we suddenly remember that our fourth grade school year has come to an end. Fortunately, fourth grade is a lot like writing, and I hope that you remember what I said about that.

Together, we have explored various concepts, literature and historical events. While it was certainly challenging, I hope that it was as fun for you as it was for me.

When I think about how much our class has used technology, I am incredibly proud. We have done things and tackled projects together that many classes do not get to do. Let’s see… We have blogged a great deal, we have wiki’d in research and in sharing knowledge. We have created vodcasts and a few movies. We have used the Internet as a resource for learning to compliment literature and other print media. We have created avatars to represent our virtual selves. We have used Skype! to communicate with digital dialogues with other classes around the country. Wow… wow indeed.

I hope that you take the lessons learned in our classroom and use them to help you succeed in whatever you do. You have my most sincere thanks for allowing me to be your teacher for this school year, and I look forward to seeing you all in September as fifth graders.

Have a great summer!!!

A Special Visitor to Our Class!

We had a very special guest visit our class today – Mr. Robert Kimmel Smith! I was SOOOO excited, and I know that you all were as well. Mr. Smith told us much about his own life, where he gets the ideas for his stories, and some strategies for writing. One thing that he told us that stands out in my mind was “Write like you talk.” To me, this means that you must be yourself and tell your own story. Boy, it sure did go by fast!

Is there anything that stands out in your mind from his visit? What was your favorite part? Is there anything that you would have liked to say or ask him if you had another chance to see him?

To Blog or Not To Blog? That is the Question!

Article posted June 16, 2008 at 09:33 PM GMT0 • comment (2) • Reads 2853

This very well might be the last blog of the year. Think about all that we have accomplished in fourth grade. Think of the “Fourth Grade Inc” and “Multiply” videos that we created. Think about “The Craycast” research project and how we have used the Internet as a resource for other projects, such as our Revolutionary War biography research reports. Think about the literature that we have explored and the American history that we have experienced through plays and simulations. We sure have done a lot.

Here is another look at the "Multiply!" video:

Now think about how we have used our blogs, what we have blogged about and how we have been able to reach out to classes across the country and around the world.

Have you enjoyed blogging this year? Why or why not? Would you recommend that next year’s class blog also? Would you change anything about it? What your favorite part about blogging?

If you were me or Mrs. Troy, how would you grade yourself as a fourth grade student? What area or areas do you feel that you have shown the most growth in? FREE BREAK BLOG!!!!

Article posted February 15, 2008 at 11:26 PM GMT0 • comment (4) • Reads 734

Our class has been working very hard this year, and we will be enjoying a well deserved President’s day break:

We have all grown as “bloggers.” This is your opportunity to “free blog.” You could write about your proudest moments of fourth grade. You could write about what have been your most challenging moments. You could write about what you are doing over the vacation and what makes it special. Please just be sure that it is an appropriate subject for your blog.

One of you asked me if I would blog my thoughts. Over the break, I plan on spending as much time as I can with family. I hope that the weather will cooperate, as it is fun to take walks on a cozy (not too cold) winter afternoon. I am always looking for new things to use in my writer's notebook.

Also, a student in our class lent me a very good book that I have been meaning to read, so I hope to be able to jump into the work of Andrew Clements - one of my favorite authors. Aside from that, I will get some things done that I have not had the time to devote to, and I will be sure to bring a smile and energy for our return in just over a week.

Happy blogging, and I will see you all very soon!

I hope that this Thanksgiving 'mini-break' was happy, healthy and safe for all of us. After all of that turkey, I sat and made up this funny poem:

Thanksgiving is a 'filling' day,
But what about for the turkey?
He is the one with the big red sign
that says "Why not eat beef jerky???"

Okay, well... it made me chuckle...

Without any further fanfare, I present to you the completed 5 mini movies that, along with our Crustacean News Network anchor people that delivered them each with a creative and fun point of view, made up our class CrayCast!
I am very proud of the work that you all did, and I hope that you enjoy watching them! They are Windows Media Player files (.wmv)

Article posted November 13, 2007 at 10:43 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 532

This week we had a field trip to the Garvies Point Museum and Preserve. We learned a lot about the Native Americans that once lived in New York. Let’s think about what we experienced today and answer some questions in your article! What was your favorite part of Garvies Point? Why did you choose that? Was there anything that surprised you about Native Americans? Would you recommend that next year’s fourth graders go on this trip as well? Why or why not? Support your opinion with details from today.

Article posted November 5, 2007 at 10:34 PM GMT0 • comment (5) • Reads 774

The idea for this week's blog assignment comes from a student in our class. We are reading our third book by Robert Kimmel Smith. We have read The War With Grandpa, Bobby Baseball, and we are now reading Jelly Belly. Use some or all of the following questions in your blog article. How do you feel about Robert Kimmel Smith as an author? Which of his books have you enjoyed the most so far? After reading some of his books and learning about him as a writer, would you like to read Mostly Michael? Why or why not? What have you learned from Robert Kimmel Smith about being a writer?

What has been your favorite costume that you have been able to wear so far? What would you like to dress up as if you could be anything? Why did you choose that? As you may know, our class is working on an exciting vodcast project. For a brief introduction and explanation of what we are doing, I put together this little movie. I certainly am not a movie star, but I hope that you enjoy it nonetheless.

In your article, be sure to answer the following questions:
1) Is technology important to you? Why or why not? Use specific details to prove your opinion.
2) Do you consider yourself very good or close to an expert at one piece of technology? What is it?

4) Is there any part of technology that you would like to see used in schools someday?

You may also add any other information that you would like.

Also, please read and comment on 1 or 2 blog entries of other students in our classroom.

Our Class's Crusty CrayCast!

Article posted October 12, 2007 at 06:32 PM GMT0 • comment (4) • Reads 498

This week we are starting a new class crayfish research project. Each borough has been given a specific category to research. We will be using pictures, video and audio narration to create our very own class vodcast based on crayfish research. We have named it “CrayCast”. Begin your blog with the sentence “This week we are working on a new research project.”
In your article, be sure to answer the following questions:
1) Describe the project as if the reader was not in our classroom.
2) What category is your borough responsible for?
3) What resources are you using for your research?
4) How do you feel about this project?

You may also add any other information that you would like.

Also, please read and comment on 1 or 2 blog entries of other students in our classroom.

Make sure that you double check your blog and your comments for proper capitalization, grammar, punctuation and spelling!

Pinch Me I'm Dreaming!

Article posted October 3, 2007 at 04:44 PM GMT0 • comment (3) • Reads 548

The title that I chose for this article is most likely what one crayfish would say to another crayfish if they couldn't believe whate they were seeing!

Not only is our class now learning about crayfish - we have live crayfish in our classroom! We are exploring their anatomy, what they eat, how they move and many other things about them.

Here is your next blog assignment:

This week we have started learning about crayfish, so your blog this week will be about them! Begin your blog with the sentence “This week we started studying crayfish.”

In your article, be sure to answer the following questions:
1) What are some things that you learned about crayfish? (2 is plenty)
2) What do you think is the most interesting thing about them so far?
3) What is something that you still hope to learn about?
4) How do you feel about having them in our classroom?

You may also add any other information that you would like.

***Remember that a blog is NOT a journal. What you write can and will be viewed by other people, so DO NOT put any sensitive or personal information!***

Enjoy, and blog away!

Our class has just started reading our second book. It is The War With Grandpa by Robert Kimmel Smith. We are blogging our initial feelings about the after reading the blurb and then chapters 1-3, and then thinking about what we would do if we were Peter - the main character.

Welcome Class of 2007-2008! I hope that you will all enjoy using our blog page!

A blog (web log) is a way that you can share your thoughts and ideas with people in our classroom and other classrooms near and far!

You can blog about things that we are exploring in our classroom, our school or just about anything!
I am looking forward to a great year.
