August Already???

Article posted August 9, 2012 at 02:12 PM GMT0 • comment (8) • Reads 220230

Hello students!!!

Is it August already? It must be a mistake! No matter how I change the calendar date on the computer, it seems that the sunset of the summer is fast approaching. That is not to say that there isn't a lot of time left, so if there is some way that you wanted to spend your summer, something that you wanted to accomplish, or someplace that you wanted to visit, get to it!

I miss you all, and I am looking forward to seeing you in about a month!

Mr. D

DUMP THE TEA!

Article posted May 30, 2012 at 05:24 PM GMT0 • comment (3) • Reads 51631

On the evening of December 16, 1773, the patriot Samuel Adams led three groups of fifty men disguised as Mohawk Indians. They went aboard the three ships, broke open the tea chests, and tossed them into the harbor. This became known as the “Boston Tea Party”.

Using your blog, make believe it is 1773. Write a journal entry as if you were a patriot who took part in the Boston Tea Party. Tell why you did it and how you feel about what you did. Make sure that your writing is correct for that time period, and make sure that is appropriate for fourth grade.

Make sure that you triple-check your blog and your comments for proper capitalization, grammar, punctuation and spelling!

***Remember that a blog is NOT a journal. What you write can and will be viewed by other people, so DO NOT put any sensitive or personal information!***

Childhood obesity is a major concern for our nation. We have been learning what foods are better for us than others and ways to make sure that we have the nutrients that we need to grow strong.

Is there anything available in our school that you would like to see eliminated because it isn’t healthy? Is there anything that would like to see available to us in our school that you don’t see now? If you could make one day of the week “Our Healthy Day”, what would the menu look like? Name 3-5 items that you think the students in our school would enjoy and would also keep us healthy.

Make sure that you triple-check your blog and your comments for proper capitalization, grammar, punctuation and spelling!

Na-Na-Na-Na Hey Hey Hey Goodbye!

Article posted May 1, 2012 at 05:40 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 1366

The past few weeks our class, along with fourth grade students all over New York State, took the English Language Arts and Math Assessments.

What advice do you have for next year’s fourth grade students? Please do not be specific about what was on the test itself, but think about what strategies and skills you had to use. Do you think that you were ready? Was there anything about them that surprised you? Do you think that tests like this are useful? Why or why not?

Make sure that you triple-check your blog and your comments for proper capitalization, grammar, punctuation and spelling!

Collaboration is a fancy word for to working together with one another; to cooperate. Our class will be collaborating this week with Ms. Marvullo’s fourth grade class at Center Street School. Earlier this year, they came to visit us to see our “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” music video. They have invited us to make our own shirts for Earth Day, and it will no doubt be awesome.

This got me thinking about collaborating with other students in other schools. Center Street is pretty close to us which makes it pretty easy to get there. Imagine that if distance was not an issue. What part of the world would you like to collaborate with? Is there a particular country, state, or city that you would like to connect with? What kind of project would you like to do? Try to tie it into something that we study in fourth grade.

Never “Too Tired” To Recycle!

Article posted March 26, 2012 at 03:25 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 3393

Our class was so lucky to have Mrs. Dewalters here showing us how to recycle old bicycle tires into belts and leashes! We had such a great time! Thank you again, Mrs. Dewalters! We now know that too many tires end up in landfills taking up space, and we were to actually make a difference. What was your favorite part of the day?

Not only was making those belts fun, it wasn’t that difficult as we created them step by step. The most challenging thing was coming up with the idea to do it.

Think about the things that we use and throw away in our lives. Can you think of something that we would somehow be able to reuse in a different way? Maybe it could be clothing, or a tool, or a decoration… but I want you to really think about it. Do you have any ideas?

Make sure that you triple-check your blog and your comments for proper capitalization, grammar, punctuation and spelling!

Hey Birds! Take Me South!

Article posted March 5, 2012 at 05:27 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 7841

How incredible was our visit from a real “Indian”, or first American named Uaian! We learned a lot about Native American culture, we watched movies showing how they were treated, their dances, music, stories and even their games. My favorite was the story about how the turtle got the cracks in its shell.

What do you think was the most important of what we learned? What would you want to tell the world to educate them most about what we learned? Would you recommend this experience be brought back next year to Searingtown? Why or why not? Be specific and support your choice with details.

Challenge from Mr. D – If it were possible, what other culture would you most like to learn about from a guest speaker? For example, if you wanted to learn Eskimo culture from a real person speaking to us of Eskimo origin.

Make sure that you triple-check your blog and your comments for proper capitalization, grammar, punctuation and spelling!

Free Blog For March!

Article posted March 1, 2012 at 11:26 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 1747

Today we learned more about the culture of Native Americans. This is an optional blog assignment, but it was due to popular demand by our class. If you were asked to present your culture to your classmates (or other people), what would you most want them to know about it?

BYOD Yay or Nay?

Article posted February 13, 2012 at 08:06 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 8502

Many members of our class own personal electronic devices, and we have been talking about the idea of schools embracing “BYOD” to help students learn the skills that they need for the 21st century. First, look over the “BYOD & Education” article that we read together in school. It should be in your homework folder. Write a blog article persuading your reader to agree with your opinion on the following question:

Should students be allowed to bring their own personal technology devices to school for use in learning? Why or why not? Support your claim with details from your research (the article).
