We are a fourth grade class on Long Island, New York. We are using this blog as a resource for online expression and communication of topics that we are exploring inside and outside of our classroom.

Can you believe it is February already? It is a month full of winter fun, Valentine’s Day wishes, and a week off!
Let’s think about Colonial America. Think about the jobs that we are learning about. Which trade would be best for you? Explain with details about yourself and the trade why this job is a perfect fit for you. Don’t just say “I would be a …..” That will not be enough!

Of course.. Make sure that you TRIPLE check your blog and your comments for proper capitalization, grammar, punctuation and spelling!

Our class is now enjoying the book Jelly Belly, by one of our favorite authors, Mr. Robert Kimmel Smith. In this book, a young boy named Ned is sent to a diet camp by his family to help him lose weight. Ned admits to the readers that while he does want to lose weight, he does not want it enough. Wanting it enough means not snacking in the middle of the night, exercising and dieting responsibly.
Think of ways that you would like to make some improvement in yourself. This can be a physical or a character trait. Now think of what you would have to do to prove that you want it enough. What would you have to do or not do?
Imagine that you were one of the bunkmates at Camp Lean-Too. What advice would you have for Ned to help him?

Our class has just completed our first big music video Empire State of Mind – A Study of New York State. The response from it has been overwhelmingly positive – it is a HUGE SUCCESS and I am so proud of you all. What was your favorite part of it? What should we do as our next big project? Should we do it soon or should we wait later in the year? What specifically do you recommend that we do?

This is not a blog assignment, but you are more than welcome to comment on it if you want. We have just finished our music video. It is based on Jay_Z's hit song "Empire State of Mind", but we used our knowledge of New York from our classroom explorations. We had a lot of fun creating the song and the video. We hope that Jay-Z and Alicia Keys somehow get the opportunity to see our work. They really inspired us to create it.
And without any further fanfare, we proudly present to you... our first music video!

Our class will soon be exploring our new science unit of electricity. Last week, a gentleman came from The Long Island Power Authority, and he spoke to us about electrical safety. What did we learn? What did you think of his presentation? How could we get the information that we learned out to other students that were not able to be there? Think about what ways you could do or accomplish this. Be creative, and remember that the message is very important.
You may also add any other information that you would like.

Last week we took a field trip to the Garvies Point Museum and Preserve. We are also learning a lot about the Native Americans that once lived in New York. Let’s think about what we experienced there and answer some questions in your article. What was your favorite part of Garvies Point? Why did you choose that? Was there anything that surprised you about Native Americans? Would you recommend that next year’s fourth graders go on this trip as well? Why or why not? Support your opinion with details from the trip.
You may also add any other information that you would like.
I would also ask that you look at some of the WONDERFUL past blog entries of our class and make some comments to your classmates. We have done a very good job of expressing ourselves through our blog articles, and it is always great to get some feedback from your friends.

This blog assignment was inspired by James, a student in our classroom. We have been studying ways that we can be more responsible citizens of planet Earth. We have explored how we can recycle, what we can recycle, and the affects of taking care of both our renewable and nonrenewable resources.
James wants to know if we can identify items in our home that we can make an effort to recycle. Does your family have a recycling plan of any type? He also wants to know if we know of ways that we can help to stop pollution of the Earth.
We surely face some steep challenges, but as we gain knowledge about the consequences of our actions we can make the best choices for a better tomorrow.

I cannot believe that the first marking period is over already!!! Can you believe it is now December??? As you know, this week our class will be receiving their report cards.
I am wondering how you think your year is going? If you were the teacher, how would you grade yourself in the subject areas like math, writing, reading, science, and social studies? What areas do you feel that you became stronger in? What areas would you like to most improve in over the next marking period?
Here is the most difficult part of this blog. What can you do to make these improvements? I want you to really think about yourself as a fourth grade student, and try your best.

For this week, I have assigned the blog as an optional homework. Many of you have really done a beautiful job with your blog entries, and your comments have been respectful and enthusiastic.
I guess my blog article this week will be me thinking out loud about some special projects that we can explore together. There are so many areas of study in fourth grade that we can have a lot of fun with. Off the top of my head, there is recycling, the native americans of New York State, electricity, of (my favorite) the American Revolution.
We have a great deal of creativity and energy in our classroom, and I really hope that we will be able to use those as tools for our learning. Remember that with great projects comes great responsibility (Spiderman's uncle said something like that). Along with the responsibility, maturity also goes hand in hand. I can't wait to start working on them! My head is already full of some really cool ideas!
What do you want to blog about? It can be anything!

Role models are people who have the qualities or characteristics that we would like to have.
Role models are people who have affected us in a way that makes us want to be better people, and we “look up” to them. Who do you consider to be your role model? You may list 1 or 2. Remember to look within your family for some great people as well!
Why did you choose this person? In what way or ways would you like to be like this person? What can you do to accomplish this?
You may also add any other information that you would like.
Also, you can comment on blog entries of other students in our classroom or in classrooms that we are sharing with.
Make sure that you TRIPLE check your blog and your comments for proper capitalization, grammar, punctuation and spelling!
