Title: Earth Day Reflections (04/23/09)
Description:
This past week we celebrated Earth Day. We were lucky enough to participate in a 24 hour Earthcast, working in groups to present information about various topics related to Earth Day. Think about your topic for the Earthcast. What information did you present? How do you think your presentation went? How would you change it to make your message more powerful? What would you like people to do now in order to help your cause?

While writing remember these items:

1. Be sure to write a cohesive blog and not just answers to questions.
2. Be sure to use language and voice to make your blog interesting to the reader.
3. Be sure to carefully explain your topic to your audience. You may need to do more research.
4. Cite sources properly.
5. Stay focused and organized. Use a graphic organizer if needed.
6. Edit, edit, edit.

This blog is due on Friday, May 1st. If you submit the blog by Wednesday, April 29th, we will give you suggestions for improvement.

Do you know one of the most important holidays in the U.S.A.? It is Earth Day. The reason why Earth Day is one of the most important holidays is that is how we can honor the Earth for what the Earth has given us.

My class did an Earthcast. If you don't know what an Earthcast is then read on... A cast is an online phone call. The word "Earth" was added to the word "cast" because my class did a cast about Earth Day. The Earthcast lasts for 24 hours, but our class signed up for 1 hour. We had help from another class that was next to ours, so we split our time in half. Our class did 30 minutes and the other class did 30 minutes.

Our class separated into 9 groups of different topics about what kinds of things are good and bad for the Earth. Some of the class topics were about recycling batteries, the three r's: reduce, reuse and recycle, hybrid cars, turning off lights, and my group's topic, Smoking.

Let me tell you about my group's topic, Smoking. I chose smoking as my topic because I care about Earth and the people on Earth. Smoking is harmful to the environment and you. It pollutes the air we breathe and causes deaths. Also Cigarette butts and packs cause litter to our streets. Smokers in England throw away about 20 million cigarette packs and about 300 million cigarette butts every day. Many of these end up adding as litter to the streets and polluting the soil. They also dirty floors and damage furniture. Did you also know that Cigarettes contain over 4,000 chemicals which are exhaled into the air causing pollution?

Smoking does not do anyone good. It's a waste of money and paper. We need to breathe, but no one needs to smoke. So if you see someone smoking a cigarette, remind them what they are doing to the environment.

Don't smoke and be safe!

2 Super Boy -- Our Earthcast

Article posted April 27, 2009 at 10:50 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 539

Hello! Our class did a webcast on earth day about different ways to help the environment. The web cast was twenty four hours long, but our class only did it from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm and a fourth grade class did it for half the time. The web cast started at eight o’ clock in April 21st to eight o’ clock in the twenty second.

Me and my partner, 24 Sports Fan talked about Hybrid cars and how they help the environment. I learned a lot of things about them. Something cool I learned was that every time you stop the car the engine shuts off so they don’t waste energy! The radio is still playing but only the engine shuts down! I also learned that you could get up to 500 miles per tank of gas so you don’t waste a lot of gas. My car only gets up to about three hundre miles in a tank of gas. I also learned that there are a lot of different kinds of hybrid cars so you have a lot of choices. I got my research information from http://www.care2.com/channels/ecoinfo/hybrid and from http://ezinearticles.com/?How-Do-Hybrid-Cars-Help-the-Environment&id=1336189.

The problem we had is that the script was not long enough but we only had one and a half days to work on it so I was pretty proud of ourselves. I also think we talked in a monotone voice so we sounded like robots. But I think we did pretty good. Next time I’m going to work harder on the research and make the script longer and only take a little bit of time making it. If you want to help me or tell me something I should do better, why don’t you leave comments to my blog and tell me what I should do better so I can fix what I did wrong the first time, this way I look like I know what I am doing.

I really liked this web cast. I hope I do something like this again so I could blog about it!

3 Cody -- Earth Day Reflections

How could you help save the earth?  In my school we recycle plastic and paper. On Earth Day we did an Earth Cast, it was just like a podcast, but different.  Everyone from around the world was at the Earth Cast, that is,only if you were invited.  All of the kids in my class were paired up in groups and had to write a short paragraph to recite during the Earth Cast. Our teachers only told us a day before that we had to recite a paragraph in front of the world.
The Earth Cast was a 24 hour event but we didn't stay for the whole thing.  We only had one hour that we split in half and shared it with another class. We all had to recite our paragraphs in under five minutes.  My group was Melina, Allen, and me. We recited our paragraph about transportation. We did a talk show and I was the host.I talked about pollution and how it damages the earth. Pollution hurts the earth, so lets set up fundraisers for people to trade in a that takes in so much fuel for a hybrid car. Did you know that a hybrid car runs on half gas and half battery?
Melina had a poem that was about using bikes instead of cars. So lets go buy a bike and pedal, pedal, pedal. With the bikes we can put an ad on the enternet for a no car day and ride our bikes to wear we have to go. Allen had some comedy questions about cars. Did you know that bio-diesel is fat from other animals?

So Let’s Stop Pollution! Let’s save the earth today=http://

4 Star15 -- Earth Day!

Earth Day

Hi everyone! Did you do anything exciting in your class for Earth Day? In our class, we honored Earth Day by participating in a 24 hour earth cast! We each were put into groups of 2 or more and then we presented a certain topic about Earth Day. Saikiran and I worked together and we wrote and rehearsed the script about Why We Plant Gardens? Gardens help us live and they also supply us with fresh and healthy food. There are many advantages to having a garden. First, we can save lots of money and fuel when you plant a garden. You are saving fuel because you drive to the store to buy the products you need. Driving puts waste into the air which pollutes the earth.  But if you have a garden you’re not wasting fuel because you only have to step outside your house! Second, you are wasting money by buying the fruits, vegetable and flowers when you can just grow them in your garden, for free! Gardens are very important for our earth. Planting flowers and trees are very helpful to the environment because we can’t survive without them. That’s because we breathe in oxygen to live. We breathe out Carbon Dioxide. But trees and flowers do the opposite. They breathe in the Carbon Dioxide and let out oxygen. We’re all connected, one way or another. They help us live and we help them live. These are some of the things we talked about in our audio! In my opinion, I think that our presentation went well. Saikiran and I spoke fluently, made it sound funny and interesting. Since we had only one day of researching and rehearsing, the teachers were amazed at how well we presented our information! One thing I’m unsure about is if we made our message powerful. If it wasn’t, what I would do is ask my grandmother questions and add the answers in my script. I would ask my grandmother’s advice because she is a Master Gardener and she studied the importance of gardens. She is knowledgeable about global warming and how we should be planting gardens to help our planet recover. Of course, she told me that there are many other way to heal the environment such as conserving light and water, buying hybrid cars(like my grandparents did) and most importantly, the 3 R’s. The 3 R’s are Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. You probably recycle and reuse in school/home. You might not be able to reduce at school but hopefully you are able to do it at home. Remember, if we each plant a garden we will be saving our peers and Mother Earth. Gather your family, friends and neighbors with you, so together we can stop global warming!

6 B-Ball Star -- Earth Day Reflections

Article posted May 1, 2009 at 02:25 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 588

GO GREEN! April 22, 2009 was Earth Day. Our class was asked to be on a 24 hour Earthcast. The Earthcast is a 24 hour show where classes get 30 minutes to present some ideas, changes, thoughts, suggestions and so on. Each student or group should get about 5 minutes to speak; at least that’s what my class did. We talked about how to save the earth and protect the environment. For example, turn off the lights when you’re not using them. Don’t leave all the lights on in your house; just turn them on when you need to. Lights use electricity, which burn off coal and pollute the air. Tell your friends and family not to waste electricity, it makes a difference!

My group talked about using alternative energy and fuels. Alternative fuels are fuels or substances that are used instead of harmful fossil fuels, like natural gas, coal, and oil. Instead of polluting the air, alternative fuels are used. For example, regular cars burn fossil fuels, and send harmful emissions into the air. However, hydrogen cars are cars that instead of burning fossil fuels, gives off water, which is not at all harmful to the environment. Wind power, solar power, and hydropower are alternative energy. Alternative energy is energy that replaces other energy that gives off harmful gasses. Wind power is when something is powered by wind. Solar power is when something is powered by the suns rays. Hydropower is when something is powered by water. If you buy solar panels and put them on your roof, your house will be powered by the suns rays!

My group wasn’t there to attend the live Earthcast in our class, so we recorded it before hand, and we played the recording at the Earthcast live. I think our presentation was good, but we needed to be more persuading, and why people really should use alternative energy and fuels.

The environment is crucially getting worse. It NEEDS help, and using alternative energy and fuel will make it better. Buying solar panels, using hydrogen cars (or hybrids) and turning off unused lights. What would you say/do if you had 5 minutes to talk about the earth or environment on the Earthcast?

7 Princess -- My Earth Day Reflection

Article posted April 30, 2009 at 03:26 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 536

On Earth Day we had a great opportunity to be in an Earth Day web cast which was called Earth cast 2009. It was such an honor to be in a web cast that was about saving the earth. It was so interesting to see what other people had to say about what we should do to save our earth. For this web cast we had to make a group. The group that I was in was going to talk about transportation and how driving particular transportation polluted the air. The group was George, Allen, and I. So then my group thought with this topic how could we save the earth? We researched and used some of our on background information to make our small presentation.

Our performance was broken up into three parts. And we each had a little part of the project to present. My presentation was a poem about how some transportation is better than others, George’s presentation was a paragraph about pollution, and Allen’s presentation was a quiz about pollution and gases we should use. We made a talk show presentation. We want people to react to the presentation by thinking that we should always help the environment and make sure that we make good choices about transportation.

My presentation was a poem about transportation. The goal of my topic was to show how bikes are better than cars. The reason why I chose this topic with my group is because bikes don’t run on gas that means that they do not not pollute the air. Bikes just pedal a chain that people pedal with their legs. But cars use gasoline that have really harsh chemicals. That is why we should not use them.

George’s presentation was about polluting the air and what we could do to help. George said that we should get hybrid cars instead of regular cars because hybrid cars do not use those harsh gases. The gas that we use in our cars can lead to health issues. Hybrid cars run on electricity that means that we are not polluting the air.

Allen also had a deed to do. He had to make up a quiz about pollution and what gases are better. He shared information about how LED light and UCLED light are better than Halergin light because they last longer. We also learned that an electric bike is better to use than a motor bike because a electric bike runs on electricity and motor bikes run on gas so we should pick the electric bike.

We wanted people to learn how use transportation that will not hurt the environment. We wanted to tell people what they were doing to the environment and what they can do to help and what we should use instead to not hurt the environment.

When we presented our talk show we had some bad glitches. I miss pronounced some words in my poem. Allen was not loud enough, some of his questions were mixed up the wrong way, and George was not loud or enthusiastic enough. I think our presentation had good parts and parts that ould be better. Some good parts were when the audience asked a question and we all answered great. Some things that I would change that would make our presentation more showcased was putting more information to show that we really wanted people to know that we need to use other transportation that will not hurt our environment. I would have liked to put more fun things to encourage kids to save the Earth.

In conclusion I thought that our presentation was interesting and very important for Earth Day. Transportation is used by everyone around the world. It is important for everyone to learn what kind of transportation is good for the Earth. I hope that our message will be heard and one day our planet will be saved.

The source that we used to complete our project was NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

8 The Art Guy -- Earth Day

Article posted April 28, 2009 at 07:15 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 521

Hello on 4,22,09 we had a earthcast. If you don't know what it is i will tell you. It is like a podcast but it is live with people. My topic was Recycle. It was fun to learn a lot of info on the earthcast. Our info was kind of short, but I think we covered most of it. Did you know that most of us don't recycle? That's a bad way to treat the earth .The earthcast was a great way to get our message through to everyone. Everyone should now listen and help the earth. If we don't recycle the earth will die and so will everyone on it! On Nick {Nickolodeon} it says "the big green, right?" That is also a way to get their message to us and by the earthcast was also a good way. If we recycle we can save a lot of paper and trees too. You can recycle other things besides paper. For example: plastic bottles, clothes etc. In the future, if we don't recycle we might not live. WE might not because we would use all of the resources and that wouldn't be good for the earth or even us. So you can do your part and recycle and even you can make a difference, to the going green world! So recycle and do your big part! You can make a difference!

9 Japanese Girl -- How We Can Help the Earth

Article posted April 29, 2009 at 01:51 AM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 527

On Earth day, we celebrate for the earth, but what gifts are we giving to earth? Nothing. All we’re doing is polluting the earth and doing nothing to help. How are we polluting the earth? Well, very simple. We make cars that run on gas which goes into the air and pollute the air, we have smoke coming out of factories that pollute the earth, and there’s one thing that EVERYBODY’s doing; turning the light on. Many of you might think that it’s no problem turning on light, because it’s just electricity, right? But the thing that you don’t know is that to make electricity, you have to burn coal, which ends up polluting the air (and using a lot of non-reusable resource). Back then, we didn’t have cars and lots of factories yet so we didn’t pollute as much. But we did start using oil lamps, which is a little different from polluting the earth, but it’s nothing good. Oil is a non-renewable resource (which means once you use every bit of it on earth, it’s gone, forever) and increases the amount of Carbon Dioxide in the earth.
The group I was in when we did projects on earth day researched about alternative energy. We learned how to produce electricity without burning coal and polluting the air.
So, how can we help? Well, there are different ways of producing electricity. There is solar power, wind power, and hydro power.
To use solar power, you need solar panels. Solar panels are boards that get energy form the sun, so if you want to light up your house by using solar power, you can just put solar panels on the roof tops. The solar panels will not run out so that means you don’t have to keep on buying and buying again and again. The sun won’t run out either, so you’re not using any non-renewable resources.
The definition of wind power is the word itself, getting power from the wind. You need tools that will move or spin when the wind is blowing and that movement will cause electricity. One tool is a wind mill. Not many countries use wind power, and probably solar power and hydro power is used more. Maybe the country side is a good place to have wind mills.
Hydro means “water” so hydro power is actually water power. Hydro power is really the speed of the water current. If the current is fast and wild, that causes a lot of electricity. If the current is low and calm, it won’t produce much electricity as when the current is wild. To use hydro power, you must be near water or a river so you can actually send all the electricity produced into your house.
On earth day, we learned more things about recycling, reducing, reusing, and saving the earth. I hope that by reading the articles of mine and other classmates, you might think a little bit more about being kind to the earth than you have been before.

10 Doggie Gal -- Earth Day Reflections

Article posted April 29, 2009 at 12:33 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 487

We were lucky to participate for the 2009 earth cast. Many people had different topics. They each explained very clearly what their topic was. Ever heard of the three R’s? Well, I am going to tell you what I did on the day of the earth cast.

The three R’s are very important topics. Recycling, reusing, and reducing are the three R’s. Recycling is things that already have been used such as paper, bottles, and plastic. Reuse means to use something again. Reducing means to decrease what you use. Have you ever noticed that each of the words have RE in it? Well, re means to do something again. Doesn’t each of the words now make sense?

The three R’s can be very powerful. It can save the earth. You can save the earth by doing almost everything. Do you know what the three R's can do? It might not be a good thing but you can help by trying your best. It can also be a good thing too! It is better if we not go to the dark path. Try making sure to do a better job of keeping the earth. The three R’s are a job you can do and everyone can do it.

What my opinion of the earth cast went pretty well. We only have a day and a half to do our research. We got down all of the information. I think that we could have used some more excitement. But other than that it went great. Hopefully I can do that again. I had really fun. I hope that we have taught a lot of people on what we did and how to save the earth.

Here are some ways you can help the earth. If you want to recycle, make sure to recycle the right items. If you don’t know what they are well you better keep on reading on. Make sure to recycle paper, bottles, cans, and plastic. Those items will be crushed and be made into something new. You can reduce what you use by using both sides of the paper. Also you can reduce on what you buy. Make sure to buy the amount of supplies that you are going to use. And you can reuse by give your old clothes to younger people, your relatives, and especially to charity.

If all this happens that the earth will be a better place to live on. I am so lucky that we did this earth cast. It will encourage everyone to recycle and do the same. It will encourage everyone to recycle and do the same.

11 Salamander -- Earth Day

Article posted May 1, 2009 at 02:42 AM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 631

Earth Day is a very special day to help the environment, But how do we help the environment on Earth Day when we are polluting the Earth by using cars and electricity because we use non-reusable resources (resources that we can run out off) when you use these devices. There are also different ways we are polluting the Earth by littering and by not trying to walk to an easy destination instead of using a car. Well on Earth Day my class did a Radiocast. My group covered the topic of alternative energy. We learned that there were many ways we could help the earth. We could use hydrogen cars, solar power, wind power and Hydropower.

Hydrogen cars run on hydropower, they do not run on gas. This way there aren’t letting out emissions. Instead they let out water vapor which is not an emission.

Solar Panels are things you can install on your own house if you wanted to so there is one way that you can help the Earth. Anyway to use Solar Power you need Panels which go on your roof top which convert heat energy to electrical energy. When you use solar power this helps the Earth because you are not burning coal to power a turbine which lets off smoke.

Wind Power is made by a windmill which is something you will see in many cartoons when they show farms or a house in the middle of nowhere. Wind power is fairly simple the wind pushes a turbine which creates power which is then used to power the house. This helps the earth because like I said before it does not require the burning of coal.

Hydropower is like Wind Power and is used to power cars that run on Hydrogen. The concept is just like wind power except that this time the water pushes the current. So the same as wind power the turbine is pushed which creates power to power the house.

I am very happy that my group said this on the 24 hr. radiocast that we did because I feel it is important for people to know this!!

12 Yankee Fan -- Earth Day Reflections

Article posted April 30, 2009 at 02:12 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 545

On Earth Day, my class and I participated in a 24 hour Earthcast. The class was split up in groups to talk about the different ways to help conserve the Earth.
My group and I talked about the 3 R’s. They are Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. In our presentation we included facts about how each of the 3 R’s can help the Earth and we also gave examples of how you can reduce, reuse and recycle.
By reducing, you reduce or conserve the energy and resources. We can reduce the use of energy by turning off the lights when you are not in the room. Instead of driving, you can walk or use your bicycle since the exercise is beneficial to you too. You can also carpool or take public transportation like the buses or trains. If you must drive, use a hybrid car. Another way of reducing is turning the water off when you are brushing your teeth and take shorter showers.
By reusing, you are actually saving money and resources from the Earth. Instead of throwing something out and filling up the landfills, you can sell your things on eBay or have a garage sale or even donate it to a charity. Reusing plastic bags or bringing your own bags when you go shopping and reusing water bottles have become very popular now.
By recycling, you are actually reprocessing the material to produce something to reuse again. Recycling also reduces the waste that is sent to the landfills. The most important thing that people recycle are cans and glass products. There are also many other things that are important to recycle. Some are paper and batteries. By recycling paper, we do not need to kill so many trees. Batteries contain a lot of chemicals that are hazardous to the environment. Therefore, by recycling batteries instead of throwing them out in the trash can, it prevents the hazardous chemicals such as lead and mercury ending up in the landfills that can contaminate the environment.
I know that everyone has a fear of presenting in front of people, especially when everyone in the world can watch you. I think my presentation went well but I can always do better. If we practice more and had more time, I’m sure the presentation could have gone more fluently and would have been clearer to understand, but because we only had a day and a half to prepare for this, I think we did an excellent job. If I could make a change to the presentation, I would probably emphasize all the bad things more. Now that everyone knows what we can do to make the Earth greener, we should also let everyone know what is ruining the environment. For example, I would stress on the pollution and what causes it, water contamination and the chemicals that cause the bad air quality.
Everyone knows that on Earth Day, we should all do at least 1 good deed for the Earth even if it is just something small like turning off the lights for a minute. Well, my message to everyone is, the Earth is ours and it is up to us to make a difference. “Everyone can make a difference because in a hundred years our Earth can be Green and Happy or Ruined and Sad, so it’s time to make a Change Now.”
There are many ways you can help make the Earth go green. Here are examples of reducing, reusing and recycling. Everyone should be mindful of the following examples at all times. You can reduce when you go to the grocery store by not buying more products that you need. Only buy what you will use and eat. SAVE, SAVE and SAVE. In this economy reducing and reusing are a good way to SAVE your money. You can reuse by writing on both sides of the paper instead of writing only on the front of the paper. You can recycle by recycling paper, cans, plastic bottles and batteries. But it would be better if you reduce so there is nothing that goes to waste.
So help change the Earth. You can listen to the Earthcast at our class website, http://www.herricks.org/webpages/spcollaborative/technology.cfm.

14 Jets N Mets -- Earth Day Reflections

Article posted April 28, 2009 at 12:40 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 554

This Earth day my class got to contribute in a very special twenty four hour earth cast. We had the roles of filling in the one to two o’clock times with things that we can do to help this world become a better place. The information I presented was that more people need to start recycling batteries because if we just throw them in the garbage the chemicals will eventually get into the ground and poison the earth. They can also injure people too. If the chemicals leak out of the battery and onto someone’s body the chemicals and poison in it will make the person sick.
Different batteries use different chemicals. The normal batteries you see in the store use alkaline mangnese dioxide. (1)
The widespread use of batteries has created environmental concerns since these toxic chemicals cause pollution and electronic waste and are harmful or fatal if the batteries or chemicals are swallowed. Recycling or proper disposal of these batteries prevents these dangerous chemicals from entering the environment. (2)
When I was done with the presentation I thought it went great but I kept thinking in my head that I wish I spoke clearer so that people would understand me more and might understand the concept better. I also was thinking that I wish I made my message more powerful by getting more detailed information on what could happen to people and the environment if we don’t recycle batteries. I would like people to start recycling batteries to help our cause so they can help this world become a better place and make themselves a better person=http:// There are many places you can recycle batteries. I would recommend a Staples or Whole Foods in your area.
My class talked about a bunch of different topics and I hope that anyone who heard what we said will pass on the message and help the environment.

16 Star -- Earth Day Reflections

Article posted April 30, 2009 at 12:26 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 577

On earth day we honor the earth. But we are not doing that. We are hurting the earth. We are polluting the earth in a way you could not imagine. We are putting pollution in the air by burning tons and tons of fossil fuels. Also factories are dumping their trash into the oceans, rivers, and lakes. Every body is doing a lot of things that affect the earth or damaging the earth in some way. One day the earth is going to be so polluted or so, so dirty that nobody is going to be able to live on earth. If the earth get so polluted that you can not live on it, were are you going to live?

The whole class was split into groups to do a project. My group’s topic was recycling. We learned that the meaning of recycling means to treat or process (used or waste materials) to re- new so as suitable to use. When we were researching we learned a lot of information about recycling. One thing that we learned about recycling is what people can recycle. Some objects that you can recycle are all types of plastics, paper, batteries, glass, soda cans, and a lot more objects. You would put the objects in the blue trash can that has the recycling sign on it. In school we have a recycling program and we are saving so many trees by recycling.

Everybody can help out in so many ways. Some ways that you all can help out is by asking your principle to start a recycling program in school. Another thing that you can do is just recycling at home. Plus you can tell your friends to recycle. Those things will make a big change and will help the earth a lot.

The way I could change my message to make it more powerful I would add some more very important information. Also, I would add what would happen if you did not recycle. I would add the benefits of recycling. I think that would make my message more powerful because it would make the listeners more interested. What I want people to do know is to recycle a little more than they do now so they can help the earth.

On earth day you learn a lot of way to help the earth. You should use the suggestion you get to save the earth and so you have a place to live later on in your live. Also you should think a little more about the earth and think a lot more about saving the earth. That is what me and my classmates learned when we presented our projects.

17 Stargirl -- Earth Day Reflections

Article posted April 30, 2009 at 01:20 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 432

Our Earth is a beautiful place, and we should be treating it with kindness. But what are we doing for this beautiful planet? We’re polluting it, that’s what we are doing! One way we are polluting it is by burning coal for our source of energy, for electricity, and anything else we might need. But isn’t there a way for us to get energy without creating pollution for our home planet. The answer to that question is alternative energy. Alternative energy is different ways that you could create energy with. On Earth Day, my class participated in a global Earth cast. We had formed groups and chose topics, and my group’s topic was alternative energy. I think alternative energy is a great way to use energy in a different way and to it by not polluting the Earth. The three different kinds of alternative energy are solar power, wind power, and hydropower. These three types of alternative energy sources do not pollute the Earth at all. Well, by now you must be wondering what these words mean. Well, I’ll tell you.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              You ought to know by now that solar means sun. And to use the sun’s energy you must use a solar panel. The way it works is you put the solar panels on top of your house. When the solar panels are in place it will start consuming the sun’s energy, and bringing the energy into your house for your needs. Another great thing about solar power is that it never runs out because the sun is always there and that is you source of energy and you don’t have to buy light bulbs. By now you must know that solar power is when you absorb energy from the sun’s energy. Wind power is another kind of alternative energy. Wind power is obviously, the energy is made from wind. How you get energy from the wind power is by using special tools like wind turbines. In New York, we usually don’t use wind power, but wind power is often used on farms. This is another way to make electricity. Hydropower sounds pretty complicated right? Well, hydropower really only means water, and you can use water to make electricity too. The water, which the water flows in, determines how much energy you really get. See, if the current is going at a rapid speed, then it will carry a lot of energy with it. And if it is going slow then you won’t have as much energy. So hydropower is another way to use alternative energy! Earth Day is a day to celebrate our wonderful world and it truly is wonderful, but do we see that? I think this world is filled with pollution and a way you can stop this is by using alternative energy. If you want more tips about how to help our world then check out another one of my blog articles called “Tips to Save the Earth”.

18 Animal Lover -- Earth Cast

Article posted May 1, 2009 at 01:35 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 538

On Earth Day, we were suppose to help the earth, but all we did to it was pollution. How do we pollute the earth? Easy, when we smoke, the smoke from the cigarette goes into the air, thus polluting it. A cigarette has over 4,000 chemicals, which are exhale and release into the air. Millions of cigarette butts gets throw on to the ground everyday, and after 25 years it goes into the ground and pollutes the soil. Some cigars have things that are made from trees in them, like tobacco. Some smokers tend to throw their cigars into the water. When the chemicals in the cigars gets into the water, it pollutes it. You may ask why would you care if smoking is bad for the environment, well it pollutes the air, which we breathe, the ground which we use to plan our vegetable, the trees which products the air that we breathe, and the water which we drink. Smoking does bad things to every part of earth.
On Earth Day my class had an earth-cast, where we talked about the earth, and how we’re destroying it. My group worked on smoking, a subject that everyone should care about. Smoking CAN harm the earth. We tried to convince people that smoking is bad for the environment, and that the future depends on them! You too can help, tell your mom, your dad, your sister, your brother, people you like, people you dislike, and even people you see everyday, that SMOKING IS BAD FOR THE ENVIROMENT! Whose knows, your advice might help.

19 B-Ball Guy -- Earth Day

Last week it was earth day, earth day is a day to help the earth all day and it's like a holiday for us and it is for the earth. What about the rest of the days? We are not doing anything to help Mother Nature. We are only polluting the earth and wasting lots of electricity like keeping the lights on. You think its okay but it is not. If you want electricity you would have to burn up coal and coal is one of the things that pollute the earth. That’s why we should try to save the earth.
We did many things on earth day, one of the big things we did is participated in a 24 hour long live webcast. It was so fun we had to decide what topic we were going to choose. My group topic was planting and I will tell why planting fruits and vegetables are better than buying them. Most fruits and vegetables come from different countries and it takes a lot a fuel to get here to America. If you plant fruits and vegetables in your garden you would not be wasting any fuel and you wouldn’t be wasting any money either.
My presentation was wonderful. I didn’t mess up in the middle of the script and I didn’t feel scared. My message was powerful and I hope that student from around the world will start to plant more fruits and vegetables in their backyards instead of wasting gas. I hope students will pass this message on to other people and adults.

20 Giant Fan -- Earth Day Reflections

Article posted April 28, 2009 at 09:12 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 636

Wow! Earth Day this year was the best one ever! Our class participated in a 24 hour Earthcast. An Earthcast is a podcast about what can we do to the earth. My class probably had so much fun and also the teachers had fun, too. There was even a live blog. That is where you leave comments and conversations about what is going on.

Me and my friend 14 Jets N Mets worked on recycling non-reachable batteries. We used a lot of info and we answered someone’s question from a different class, (Where can you recycle batteries?) People don’t think it is serious, but it is very serious. From my prospective, I think our podcast went fantastic. We had a lot of information and we knew the answer to and unexpected question. We once had a different project and our teacher ask us a question and we worked on this project for a week and we couldn’t answer the question. We worked on this for a day and a half and we knew so much about this topic and so did everyone else.

I and 14 Jets N Mets must likely feel the same way about this that people don’t care about recycling batteries, but they are all over recycling paper and plastic. Isn’t that odd? It is not bad to recycle paper and plastic, but you can also care as much as that about recycling batteries. Recycling batteries are just as important as recycling paper and plastic! I think I and some other people should talk to our school and friends about recycling batteries and as I know of, it is very simple. You just need to take your batteries that ran out of oil and bring them to a near by Staples store or a near by recycling plant, that recycles batteries. That is pretty easy on my point of view. I would like people to start recycling non-rechargeable batteries! It is important to save batteries because what happens if the world runs out of batteries and if you need to use batteries to make something work and there is no more batteries?

You should bother to recycle batteries because if you recycle you are not releasing heavy metals into the landfill and in the air that we breathe in. Don’t you want to live in a cleaner planet, don’t you? Another reason you should recycle batteries is that if you don’t recycle batteries, you are pretty much taking all of this metal and mercury in these batteries and throwing them all of the air and the land that people use. You can die if you breathe in to much metal and get heart and lung cancer. You don’t want to die, do you? My last reason that you should recycle is because if you don’t, every year we are going to have to make up all the resources for 3 billion batteries a year because that is how much America makes a year. We can possibly run out of all of this stuff and not have it.

Well, I hope you can put what I have told you and that you will put some of my tips in action.

21 Y2K -- RRR-Reduce Reuse-Recycle

A week ago our class celebrated the most beneficial holiday of the year. I think you know what that is!! Why it is Earth Day, the Earth most favorite holiday.

Our class participated in something called an Earthcast. The Earthcast is a podcast. A podcast is something that people speak into that goes on the internet for everyone to hear.

What me and my group did was talk about transportation and how we can get around without causing too much pollution. We presented a talk show and a quiz at the end starring me. Have you ever heard of biodizzel? Well, if you have not, it’s fat from animals. There is a bike that can go 20mph and it’s fully electronic. It’s called the electric bike.

Personally I think my podcast went pretty well. I still think it needs some work to get the message through. I thought of a program to help clean up garbage but we did not put it in our show.

Try using public transportation such as buses, subway or maybe just carpool.

That’s all the time I have. B Y E!!

Global Warming is getting worse and worse everyday. If we don't do anything about it, the world is going to sink. People are making  the world worse by not saving the energy, wasting the non-renewable sources. For example, oil is a non-renewable source. We use it to run a car, make plastic, and etc. Non-renewable source is a something that can't be reused again. So, if we use every single drop of it on or in the earth, there is not going to be any oil left. No car can run, and no plastics can be made. We have to stop this. There are many ways you can make a difference for the Earth. One way you can help is by following the 3 R’s. They are recycling, reduce, and reuse.

Reducing is one of the 3RS. It means to save, using less amount, or decrease what you use. If you live near someone or near the school you shouldn’t ask your parents to drive you to school by a car. It pollutes the earth. And we need a daily exercise in your life. If you live close to someone, why don’t you carpool with them?  If you leave a room, you have to turn off the lights. These are some ideas you should try to make the difference.

Recycling is another one of the 3Rs. It means to process them so that they can be used again. You can recycle items like bottles, sheets of paper, cans, and candy wrappers, too. There are many recycling box in the school. If you want to throw out something that can be recycled, you have to throw out in a recycle box.Reusing is the last one of the 3Rs. It means to use it more than once. It helps the earth because you don’t waste any resource from the earth. Reusing items can save money, energy, and resources. Reusing resources is also a big use to the economy, by not using money to buy something that you already have and can be used. You can also participate in reusing plastic grocery bags for garbage bags instead of throwing them out.  Clothes are another object you can reuse. There are many household items you can reuse for arts and crafts projects.

These are some ideas you should try to save the earth. Remember, we can all make difference.

24 Sports Fan -- EarthCast

Earth Day was April 25, 2009. On that day, all the students in my class did a live radio podcast. It was on Earthbridges.com. Before we did the podcast, we were given a topic and did research on that topic. The information I was researching was about the hybrid car and how it helps the environment. My partner’s name was Asif, and we worked together on the podcast. We found out some interesting things about hybrid cars.
Hybrid cars have two or more sources of power which make them a hybrid. They combine gas with electricity to power the engine. The engine is smaller to help control pollution which helps the environment.
The electrical part is a motor and a generator. When the car goes faster the batteries help, and when the car slows down the generator gives back the electricity to the batteries. The batteries are where the electric motor stores energy. When you are at a red light and push the brakes, the engine switches to electrical power, saving gas. Things still works in the car though, like the radio.
In a regular car, the engine is big and uses more energy to run because it is heavy. In the hybrid cars, the engines are smaller and don’t need as much energy to run. The car can drive more miles with less gas because it has two sources of power.
After we researched the hybrid cars, Asif and I had to write a script to read for the podcast. Then we had to practice our scripts before we said them on the podcast. When we weren’t talking about our podcast we were Skyp-ing on Earthbridges about how to help the environment.
Asif and I talked about the hybrid cars on the podcast after researching them. I think the podcast went well because we gave a lot of good information about how the cars can help save the environment. If I had to do it again, I would research more about how the cars could help more.
