I taught my class a fun new math game. The kids roll one die, add one more to the number they rolled and cover that space. The goal is to try to get four in a row.

I can't begin to tell you how PROUD I am of all my little Kinder Bloggers! I usually start the process of getting kindergartners to blog sometime in January but decided to give it a try a month earlier this time. BOY OH BOY, am I delighted that I did!
We go to the computer lab every Wednesday morning for an hour. I thought I'd spend time Monday and Tuesday showing the kids the steps they need to take in order to log into their own blogs and write an article. I couldn't believe it when THREE kids went home and blogged on Monday after going over the steps ONCE. Yippee! The next day we had several repeat bloggers and a few more new ones. By Wednesday, just about everyone had successfully published their first article!!!
PLEASE share the link to this blog (here's the easy address: http://tiny.cc/kinderblog) with your family and friends and invite them to leave comments for the kids. Check back often to watch slideshows of what's been going on in Room 2.
Thanks for your continued support! Love, Mrs. O

Special thanks to Spencer and Logan's dads for being our Friday Motor Men! Click here to learn more about this Michigan based. motor skills, parent volunteer run program: http://www.motormomsanddads.com/about.html
We're VERY lucky to have this program at our school and parents that are willing to run it for us!
The kids take turns doing some balance and gross/visual motor skill activities.
When they're done, they pick a name stick then go and tell that classmate that it's their turn.

They brought and read their favorite children's book from when they were kindergartners and then helped their buddy roll out play dough snakes to make their names. There was even time for making whatever they wanted with the play dough. Looks like all of the buddies were not captured in pictures. We'll be sure to get the rest of them next Friday.

We learned two math games this week. One was "Race to Trace" where you roll the die, count the dots and trace the corresponding number on the sheet. The other one was "Race to the Top". The kids were each given 10 buttons and a game board with ten boxes. They rolled their die and filled in their game board with that many buttons. The first to roll the right number to completely fill in their board was the winner. GREAT opportunity to talk about winning and losing. I heard "great game!", "let's play it again", and "it's ok that I didn't win--it's only a game". Now that is some confident game-playing and amazing sportsmanship!

I asked the kids to think of hurtful words they've heard. Each time they shared their thoughts, I folded the red heart show in the picture. When it was folded so much that I couldn't put another fold in it, I tried to smooth the heart back to its original shape. Many small wrinkles remained. Hurtful words can wrinkle hearts and do lasting damage even if we say we are sorry.
We worked together to write these words (we did not compose the poem--author is unknown) and signed our names as a promise to think before we speak.

Today we started, you guessed it, The Name Game! Everyone in our class will have a turn. I always like to start with myself to show the kids the routine.
Here's what we did: We counted how many letters were in my name, found the one and only vowel, did a spelling cheer of my name and learned how to write it, forming the letters correctly (first letter capital, the rest lower case). Then everyone got a piece of paper, traced my name, wrote it by themselves and drew a picture of me. All of these pages were assembled into a book that I got to take home and show Mr. O!

The kindergartners were asked to bring in 100 pennies on the 100th day of school for some counting activities. Each year we find an organization to donate our pennies to. This year we found out that Henry Ford Hospital on Maple Road in West Bloomfield has a therapy dog named Henry. Henry and his handler came in and graciously accepted our donation of $60. We were told that our donation will go towards getting another therapy dog. The popularity of Henry at the hospital has grown so much that Henry can't handle the demand on his own. We hope to hear information soon about Henry's new co-worker.

Here's something new we tried...
Using a push pin, we poked lots of holes along the black lines close together through two pieces of paper. I removed the staples holding the papers together when the kids were done poking. According to Kindergarten Teacher Blogger Mrs. Miner, "The children find this activity very relaxing and enjoyable and find the end results magical." I must agree!

Mr. Newman came to our school this week to talk about his book and his concern for invasive species that are getting into our Great Lakes. His book's hero, "Billy Cooper" is not your typical crime fighter. He has no superpowers, just a desire to protect this unique, incredible and largest fresh water system on earth.

My brother ended up with a button collection after our Mom passed away. He had a shirt decorated for me with many of the buttons. It was so fun looking at them and remembering (very distantly!) that we had once spent hours sifting through those old buttons. GREAT memories!

I just figured something out. You can power through the slideshows if you're pressed for time! (I know some are quite long!)
Click "play" to get the slideshow running. The bottom frame of the show has several controls. "Pause" is on the far left. Next to it is the number of pictures in the show. Mouse over the number of pictures and two arrows will show up. You can then easily move forward or backward through the pictures as quickly or slowly as you'd like. Enjoy!

Mrs. Giroux's first graders have been busy making a Halloween book. They asked if they could come and read them to the Kinder Kiddos. We had something to share with them, too! We told them our "Pumpkin, Pumpkin" life cycle story.

Today we started "The Name Game". This is how it works:
Each day we'll learn how to spell and write someone's name! We chant the spelling of the name, talk about capitals and lower case letters, how words are made of letters, find and highlight the vowels, put together a name puzzle (the letters in the name are cut apart and reassembled in order), learn how to write each of the letters the correct way on our whiteboards,(Where do we start the letters? AT THE TOP!)and, finally, we each make a page for a Name Game book for the Name Game person.
We trace and write the name, write our own name and draw a picture of the Name Game person. We're learning to include details like hair, eyebrows, rectangular (not stick) arms and legs, necks and bodies and something for the person to walk on like grass. We don't want the person to be floating in space!
We're also learning how to use lots of color in our pictures. Since everyone is five years old, everyone needs to use AT LEAST five colors in their picture. Your child will bring a Name Game book home one day when it's their special day. We'll have to be patient. One a day for 29 kids means we'll be well into November or maybe December before we get through everyone!

Graphing is something we'll do all year long. Children learn how to organize and interpret data. After we graphed our apples, I asked, "What do you notice?". These are VERY good responses!
*Some apples have the same shape but different colors.
*There are five red/yellow apples all in a line in a box.
*There are ten red ones so there are ten red/green ones, too, because they are tied.
*The red and the red/green are the same. It's a tie.
*Only one green and one green/yellow. That's a tie!

I explain to the kids that the big blue bowl is like our classroom and that there are many important things that our room needs...especially good friends and happy days at school.
I added one can of fruit...."These are the kind kids in our room." Another can of fruit..."These are the hard workers in our room." Another can of fruit..."These are the kids who share." Some marshmallows..."These are the kind words being said in our room." Yogurt..."This is the happiness we feel when we are at school."
We talked about the yummy friendship salad, how good it will taste and then I pretended to peel a rotten banana. The kids yelled "Stop!!!" before I even got the banana peeled. I tell them that this is the Rotten Banana that could cause trouble in our happy classroom. This might be a banana that calls names, does not share, refuses to do school work, etc... We all decided NOT to put the rotten banana in our Friendship Salad.
What a GREAT lesson and a very DELICIOUS friendship salad!

Well, I think this is it! The last blog entry of the 2010-2011 School Year. It was one FANTASTIC year with so many wonderful memories. Thank you, families, for your generosity, your support and, most importantly, for allowing me the privilege of being your child's Kindergarten teacher. We had a BLAST and, while we were having so much fun, the kids learned a TON! I'm certain they are all ready for the challenges first grade has to offer. Please don't be a stranger. Be sure you stop in and say hello next year.
Hopefully your child received my letter with my address and phone number. Please allow your child to call me sometime this summer and drop a letter in the mail to let me know what they are up to. I miss all of them so much already!
Have an exciting and safe summer--loaded with FUN and ADVENTURE!
All my love, Mrs. O

By February I hope to have all of the Kinder Kiddos blogging along with me. If you look on the right hand column of this page you'll see our school year, "2010-2011". Click on that and you'll see each child's name appear. Click on their name and you'll go to their own blog. It will definitely be a work in progress....I'll keep you updated along the way.
Click on "Ozminwiki" and you'll find a document explaining how to help your child blog from home. Amazing, isn't it????

We had a great Valentine lunch in our classroom complete with pizza, brownies, cookies, rice krispy treats, frosting, sprinkles and juice! After that, we opened our Valentines! THANKS TO ALL WHO HELPED PROVIDE FOR THE PARTY!!!
You might notice, your child's Valentines have "stamps" that have been "cancelled". I'm kicking myself for not taking pictures...but this is what we did: The kids bought stamps for a penny a piece, stamped their valentines, placed them in the mailbox and put the flag up. Postal workers brought the mail to the post office. Inside the post office, workers cancelled the stamps. Postal delivery workers delivered the mail into the mailboxes. A lot of good name reading took place!

Every year around the 100th day of school, the kindergartners at our school run a community service project. This year we decided to raise money for Haiti. On the 100th day of school each kinder kid will bring in 100 pennies. We'll do some fun counting activities with those pennies then we will donate them to help the victims of the horrible earthquake in Haiti.
In these pictures you can see us delivering some donation cans to classrooms in the school. We're asking EVERYONE to help Haiti.

Math is so much fun when you can EAT when you're learning! We started out sorting our M & Ms by color then did some addition work. We know that addition uses a "plus" sign that looks like a "t". We know that when you add, you count to find out how many you have ALL TOGETHER. Learning to WRITE the addition sentences with the PLUS and EQUALS signs is a little tricky. So....we'll be doing this over and over again with different things to EAT!

I tried to rearrange the photos in better order but ran into trouble so, as I always tell the kids, TRY YOUR BEST. I did and this is what I got!) Enjoy!

Here is a Voicethread of the developing GB Man mystery! It's not as complete as I'd like it to be but...there just isn't enough time in the day! Regardless, we had SO MUCH FUN looking for clues and chasing down those sneaky GB men.

We have had so much fun with this book! Mrs. Wishy Washy's animals LOVE going in the mud. Mrs. Wishy Washy likes them to be clean. She scrubs them but when she returns to the house, guess what the animals do! "Oh! Lovely mud!"
We had a special snack of "mud" (chocolate pudding) and animal crackers. We also made our own Mrs. Wishy Washys.

It's hard to believe, but we've been in school for 50 days already! We made necklaces (and ate them) for snack in the morning with 50 pieces of Apple Jacks cereal. (Sorry--no pictures of that!) In the afternoon, we practiced making 50 tally marks on our white boards. I was SOOO impressed with their tally marks that I suggested a Tally Mark March! We marched and showed off our great work in all of the first grade, second grade and kindergarten classrooms. We even went to show the principal but he wasn't in. The secretaries were there, of course, and were VERY impressed!

Today I was in Clinton Township at the Macomb County ISD. I attended technology workshops and even presented one on blogging. Here I am with Mrs. Stoll and Miss Phillips, my co-presenters.

Wow! What a day! We had a special ghostly snack in the morning. This prompted us to sneak into several classrooms and the cafeteria making "ooooooooo" sounds; then we all yelled "BOO!" The fun continued with adding the final ingredients to our Witches Brew, some Halloween bingo and then COSTUMES, THE PARTY and THE PARADE! Happy Halloween everyone!

Here we are, working on writing the letter "E". We know you make a big line down, little line (across the top), little line (across the middle), little line (across the bottom). We're using a tiny wet sponge to trace over a chalk-written E, then we go over it again with a wet finger(WET), then we go over it again with a paper towel (DRY), then we write it ourselves (TRY) with chalk. Wet, dry, try!

Every Monday morning, we go to the computer lab for about an hour. We have worked with several different programs already. Did you see a colorful Elmer the Elephant come home as well as a beautiful pumpkin? That's from Kidpix. We've also gone on the internet to Starfall and we've worked on another program called Millie and Bailey. Ask your kindergartner what they like best about working in the lab.

"When do we get to go out, Mrs. O?" If I hear this once, I hear it 100 times a day! We ALL love it when we go out for fresh air, sunshine and lots of running around.

Did you know you can write most of the capital letters using only four different lines? There is Big Line, little line, Big Curve and little curve. We are getting familiar with wood pieces and even polishing them as we sing a wood piece polishing song. These wood pieces will help us learn how to write the letters. And....where do you start your letters? AT THE TOP!

The Word Wizard is one of our coveted classroom jobs. Each day the Wizard chooses five words for us to write on our white boards. The Wizard gets to write the words on Mrs. O's big easel. We are learning how to write words like "cat", "dog", "Mom", "Dad", "stop", "go", "book" and "pizza"! We make tally marks in the corner of our board to keep track of how many words we've written. (If Mrs. O forgets to have Word Wizard time one day, we'll write 10 words the next day!) Besides tally marks, we're doing a little addition and subtraction while we count the number of words we've written and figure out how many more we need to write.

Some of the best learning happens when food is involved! We made our own Chicka Chicka Boom Boom palm trees with celery, peanut butter or cream cheese, spinach, raisins and (since I couldn't find Alpha Bits) Apple Jacks. Yum!

"Elmer the elephant, a colorful character because of his patchwork hide and sense of humor, tries to blend in with the herd, but soon realizes that he's happiest just being himself." (from book description on Amazon.com)
We used watercolors to paint our own Elmers and thought about what makes each one of us unique, just like Elmer.

I read the story, "Swimmy" by Leo Lionni and taught the kids how to draw fish. We practiced drawing them on our white boards then drew one in our sketch books. We used regular orange goldfish crackers and one pretzel goldfish (for the eye, just like Swimmy) to cover the fish in our sketch books. They were just like the giant fish that Swimmy and his friends learned how to make together to keep them safe from big fish in the ocean.

Of course, sharing is something we talk about a LOT in school! This is a hilarious book about kindergarten kids sharing EVERYTHING! Ask your child if they can tell you what happens in the story.
