Week 7 in Allstars

Article posted September 3, 2010 at 01:32 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 47

This week we have been very busy. As part of our Inquiry we made apricot chutney with the help of Mrs. Palenski.
We used lots of ingredients which made the chutney delicious. It was scrumptious, yummy, tasty, sweet and sour and it smelled delicious as it cooked in the crock pot. We wrote about how we did this and have lots of photos which you can see in our classroom on Expo evening on Wednesday from 6pm-7pm
On Thursday Mrs. Reggers worked with us in our classroom and we made Father's day presents. These included a love stone with the word Dad or Daddy written on it. We made a card and a paper basket or bag to put the presents in.
This morning we went to a ballet production of Jack and the Beanstalk at the Globe Theatre. We are all going to look for different versions of the story to help us retell it next week for written language

Making Butter

Article posted August 13, 2010 at 01:32 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 230

On Thursday morning, we made some butter. We put some cream and a pinch of salt, along with a marble in a jar. We took turns shaking the jar and as we did so, we chanted a rhyme.
The jar was 500ml. size and we added 300ml. of cream.
We all chanted the rhyme. "Come butter come, come butter come.
Johnny's at the garden gate waiting for his butter cake. Come butter come, come butter come."
We made some toast this morning to spread our butter on. Some of us also had jam. It was great fun to eat.
Yesterday it was Winston's birthday and we had a piece of cake and a party bag each. Winston's mum was very generous.

Our Inquiry Trip

Article posted July 30, 2010 at 01:50 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 328

Yesterday we went on a trip to a farm to learn about gathering and storing food as part of our inquiry. We travelled by car with parents to get to the farm. Mrs. O'Connor met us and led us to the pumpkin yard. We saw the pumpkins getting washed by a machine.
They were put into different bins according to their size.
Next we drove to an onion farm. The onions were moved across some netting which allowed them to drop through depending on what size they were. Before we came back to school we were given a bag of onions and we already had a butternut pumpkin.
We had learned lots about gathering and storing food.

Allstars blog Week 6

Article posted May 28, 2010 at 01:24 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 407

Our inquiry unit has moved on from Finding Out to beginning to Sort out information. Mikyla's mum, who is in the army came to speak to us about her work as a peacekeeper. She showed us photos of the people in Afghanistan who they were helping. Some of the soldiers were real heroes as they put themselves in danger to find mines which had been planted and could not be seen under the snow. Lots of soldiers who also were doctors and nurses came from many countries to help others . They put others before themselves so we can call them heroes.
We wrote some fabulous stories about our own heroes and we would love you to come and read them in week 8 at our Expo.
Each morning we join with the rest of the school to walk as far as we can in twenty minutes, for our fitness. We wear our pedometers to count how many steps we have taken. We will be doing this for the rest of the term.

Allstars blog Week 4

Allstars have been practising being good Learning Buddies. We remember to talk purposefully to our buddy and ask good questions.
We have been discovering wonderful words about Superheroes and trying to use them in our writing. We wrote a super class story together which you can read on our display board.
We are interviewing Mr. Meyer this afternoon and asking him questions to see if we think he is an everyday hero. Ashton suggested that lots of groups of people could be heroes. They were nurses and policemen and army men and we thought of firemen and maybe people in our own families. We would like to talk to you about people you know who you think of as heroes or Heroines.
We want to say a special goodbye to Winston and hope he is happy in his new school. We will miss you.Look out for our activity work next week when we make a super hero cape for our own hero.

Allstars Blog week 3

Article posted May 7, 2010 at 02:00 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 186

We have started to think about heroes and heroines who are not real. They are fictional. We have listed Catwoman, Captain Underpants, Ben 10, Kevin 11, Batman, Spiderman, Ang, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, T- man, Timmy Turner and Superman to name a few. We have thought about words which describe how they move and how they are described. We are going to try to use them in our story writing about super heroes.
This week we have also been thinking and practising how to work well with our Learning Buddies so that we ask good questions which help each other to improve our speaking and our writing in all subjects.
Together we decided on questions we would like to find answers to about world of wonderful words and we will be doing lots of looking, listening and singing to help us answer these questions.
We have some exciting activities planned as part of our inquiry and we may be asking you for some assistance with them . We hope you will enjoy helping us if you are able.

Allstars First Blog 2010

Article posted April 30, 2010 at 03:03 AM GMT0 • comment (2) • Reads 128

We are inquiring into the World of Wonderful Words.
The teachers did a play about bullies trying to steal other peoples' lunches. One of the boys used wonderful words to change their minds. They did not want to eat cheese and SPIDER sandwiches or MUD and WORM JUICE cake. Wasn't he clever to use those wonderful words.
We all dressed up as a book character to parade around the hall on Friday afternoon and Mrs. Cousins was a pirate and Mrs. O"Connor was Mrs. Wishy Washy. She had something stuffed up her dress to make her bottom look fat.
We watched the video of Mary Poppins and heard the word
SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS! What a wonderful word. You can see the movie on youtube and hear lots of other wonderful words. We are going to be finding wonderful words about Heroes and Heroines. You can help us make a list of wonderful words which you think relate to our topic. Next week we will be asking questions and searching for words which we can use in our writing. We are also learning some great songs.
Look out for what we have learned next week.
