Exciting Flight

Article posted December 24, 2007 at 08:14 PM GMT • comment • Reads 13658

To see comments I made after being on a flight from Shanghai to Chicago that was evacuated, check out the following link:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-plane_bothdec15,0,3926516.story?coll=chi-navrailbusiness-nav

The folks at United and the flight crew were well prepared for how to handle an emergency. I continue to rate travel on United as an excellent experience.

Have a happy Christmas!

How is your summer?

Article posted July 16, 2007 at 04:41 PM GMT • comment (1) • Reads 218

My summer has been going well. I have spent a lot of time with my family. I have seen Barak Obama and talked with Senator and Former President Clinton. You may stop by the classroom in August to see my latest photos with politicians.

Former 5SH students don't forget to write 25 blog or journal entries in order to be invited to the pizza party in August.

Enjoy the rest of the summer.

Transition Ceremony

Article posted June 10, 2007 at 09:21 PM GMT • comment • Reads 215

Thursday, June 7th was a day with many mixed feelings. The fifth grade class became sixth graders during the Transition Ceremony. I am proud of the class for what they have accomplished this year. I don't want to lose them as students, however it is time for them to leave fifth grade. The good news is that most the class will be attending Shanghai American Middle School. I will be able to visit those students. However two students will be leaving Shanghai to return to the USA. One is going to Vermont and the other will be moving to Hawaii. I wish all of the class a wonderful summer and a smooth transition into their new schools.

Million Dollar Project

Article posted May 11, 2007 at 08:37 AM GMT • comment • Reads 222

The class has started to research for their Million Dollar Project. In this project the students need to develop a plan for spending one million dollars in grant money on a project to make the world a better place. Some of the students have designed projects that will fund orphanages in Africa, save the white rhino, and provide for a better habitat for pandas.

The students use computers and on-line sources for their information on this project. The end product is presentation showing justification of every dollar spent.

This week the students finished the first part of the Fifth Grade Invention Convention. Each student researched and wrote a five-paragraph essay on their inventor, created a model of one of the inventor's inventions, designed a poster using Microsoft Publisher and then acted as the inventor in a presentation to the class. Here are a few of the students in their costumes showing their posters and models.

Yesterday, Santa Claus visited the fifth grade Beyonda Box Assembly. He viewed the winning entries for the toys designed by the students and listened to the advertisements and jingles prepared to go with the products.

Earlier, Santa had visited the primary grades assembly and chatted with Mr. Broekman.

There are rumors that he may be at the Elementary Assembly on Wednesday morning.
