MissGauleysclass's Class Trip Part 2 album on Photobucket

Our second project at the 4Cats Art Studio was spin art. As you can see, it was always a surprise to see what the picture would look like, because on the spinner it looked like a target or a lollipop!

Thank you Wivi for driving our bus, and Sheila for being a chaperone!

MissGauleysclass's Class Trip Part 1 album on Photobucket

Today was our class trip to Regina. As part of our Social Studies course, we went to the RCMP Heritage Centre. The history of the RCMP is tightly linked to the history of Canada. After lunch, we went to the 4Cats Art Studio. Our first project was in the style of Jackson Pollock. As you can see, we had a lot of fun!

MissGauleysclass's Weather Instruments album on Photobucket

One of our projects in our Science unit was to make a weather instrument. We made anemometers to measure wind speed, rain gauges, and barometers.

Today was Awards Day. Congratulations to everyone who received a school pin for collecting enough participation points! Thank you to the Borderland Music Festival Committee for giving up participation medallions too!

MissGauleysclass's May and June album on Photobucket

Things have been busy, so I am a bit behind updating our blog! Here are some of the things we've been doing. In Science, we've worked on a unit about forces and simple machines. We made different kinds of levers and pulley systems. In Art, we made sculptures and pictures in the style of Barbara Reid. We've had Skittles dress-up day (pink for us), Jersey Day, and red to honour fallen RCMP officers. Only a few more days to go until summer holidays!

Our school was very lucky to have Eric Wilson come to visit today. He told us about his life, how he started writing, his research, and his successes in writing 22 mysteries (so far). Many years ago, he spent a lot of time trying to write stories that were rejected, but he never gave up and tried to learn how to improve. We were able to ask him many questions, and he answered them very well and with patience. We could tell that he used to be a teacher because he presented his information so well and dealt with the audience with ease. We were able to answer questions about his life and his work to receive prizes. We found it interesting to see the covers of his books from different countries. We were honoured to meet him.

We just finished our wonderful spring break, and now we are back for our last few weeks of school. Spring is probably here, as the robins, doves, and meadowlarks are back, gophers are running around, and crocuses have bloomed.

We have made spring break riddle poems to let you know what we did during our break. Please check out our blogs to see what we were up to.

I am like a leathered pumpkin

that is taken to court

where professional giants dribble.

I am bounced

and shot

but I make two points with a key.

What am I?

My riddle poem is about a basketball. During my spring break, my niece and I went to see the Harlem Globetrotters while they were in Regina. They have some pretty fancy passing moves, and can shoot baskets from just about anywhere on the court and just about any WAY you can think of.

What did you do on your spring break?

At last the weather is warming up! Besides having projects due and tests to write, we had some fun activities at school. We had a mini-Olympics for K-6. We had two dress up days - PJ Day, and Dress as a Favourite Story Character Day. Jump Rope for Heart saw K-12 in the gym for an hour of heart-pumping activities. Thank you everyone who donated to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Our class raised $586.50.

Our 100th Day of School happened on the same day as an early dismissal. So, along with having Keyboarding, Phys. Ed., and a quiz, we fit in a few activities for our 100th Day.

We played a Lotto game. In a grid, we listed nine numbers from 2-100. There were requirements for the numbers chosen. If the numbers were multiples of a drawn card (2-13), then we could cross it off. The winners had to have a row of 3.

We had a couple 100 second snack breaks. We did 100 exercises. We raced to do multiplication facts for 100 seconds.

Lastly, we played "Yoink". This is a race to write all the numbers to 100, but, unfortunately, people keep "yoinking" the pencil away from you.

Tomorrow, we begin counting down the days of school on a new grid.

Another busy month! We had a cupcake sale to help raise money for our class trip to the RCMP Heritage Centre. Today was Family Literacy Day, so we had a school wide activity in the gym. We were partnered with a younger student. We read a story about Rainbow Fish, and made a rainbow fish for a mural.

We went searching for some other classes to exchange comments with. We happened upon Mrs. Clay's class in El Paso, Texas. The students had written Bio Poems. We read a few, and then sent comments to the students with which we connected (hopefully they will comment back to us). We thought the Bio Poems were a good idea, so we made our own poems. Please check them out, and feel free to comment on our writing.

We performed "The Christmas Guest" for our Christmas Concert and sang "Angels Among Us". And on our last day, we opened up our Christmas presents and played games! Have a wonderful holiday season and Merry Christmas!!!

At noon, the elementary students participated in several activities based on having fun with football. It was a fun day, but even better, the Riders won the Western Final and are off to the Grey Cup this weekend! Go Riders!!!

MissGauleysclass's Fly Away album on Photobucket

We are working on our last ELA/Science unit about Flight. These pictures show scenes from a couple of experiments. The first one involved different types of wings. We had long and wide, long and narrow, short and wide, and short and narrow wings to try. We ran around the gym with the various wing types to feel the force of drag and how easy it was to turn. The second involved trying to make a balloon fly off in a straight line when we let it go. The pictures show some of our creations. We went to the gym with great expectations the balloons would travel a great distance - but they didn't!

MissGauleysclass's Day of Pink album on Photobucket

April 10 is the Red Cross Day of Pink in Saskatchewan. Our school participated in this day of taking a stand against bullying. We got our pink shirts as soon as we got to school, and then we had a massive assembly in the gym. Some community members were there too, in their pink shirts as well. We had hotdogs (with pink buns!), pink lemonade, and pink desserts for lunch. Last class, we had another assembly in the gym where we found out the winners of the SCC's writing contest. In our classroom, we learned about empathy, and did an activity with the video Bully Dance. Everyone involved in a bullying situation is affected by bullying. Having empathy (understanding and thinking of other's feelings) is a big step to preventing bullying.

January is over already? We've had wacky weather this month - anywhere from -40 to 2 (and that could be in the same week!) We had three days when the buses didn't do their routes, and two of those days it was just a few of us at school. The dress up day this month was Comic Book Character. We have a new student in our class - welcome Brooke!

Their first activity day was "Wipeout", with different obstacle course activities for all the K-6 students. There are pictures of three dress up days - pajama day, extreme weather day, and superhero day. We have finished our math units on patterns. A pet hamster came to visit and fall arrived. The Crimson String Quartet is a band of four stringed instruments - a cello, a viola, and two violins. The cello (played by Alyssa) plays very low notes. The viola (played by Alvin)plays low notes too, but higher than the cello. The violins (played by Audrey and Etienne) play the higher notes. They played some classical songs by Papa Haydn, Beethoven, and some pop songs too like "Here Comes the Sun" by the Beatles and the "Orange Blossom Special". Thank you CSQ for coming to our school to teach us about string quartets.

We wrote our play for our school's Christmas Concert this year. We read The Christmas Genie by Dan Gutman, and used his idea to begin our play. But we chose our own wishes and wrote the discussions about the pros and cons of each wish. We wrote our own endings and chose the best parts to make the conclusion for our play. Terry Fox Run Day for schools was September 28. Our class raised $399, and our school raised over $2400. It was another beautiful day. One of our classmates was lucky to win his very own Terry Fox shirt to wear for MANY years!

Katie Letnes, our Student Support Consultant, gave us a presentation on different learning styles. Here the students are building a Lego structure with only visual clues. Some students preferred building with only auditory clues. Or would you prefer to build with your eyes closed and rely only on your sense of touch??

It's also SRC elections today. I am very proud that 9 students are running for the 4 positions. Thank you for wanting to be role models for our school! Good luck!

Have a good Labour Day weekend. See you Tuesday.

We went to Coronach for our class trip this year. As part of our Science class, we toured Poplar River Power Plant and Mine. Unfortunately, it was too muddy to get to see the coal being mined, but we got to go into the power plant. It was very loud in there, but we were able to see the generators and ovens. We even visited with Bryce Rood in the control room. Thank you Val Rousseau for being our tour guide.

After lunch, we toured the Big Muddy with Tillie Duncan from Coronach Tours. We went to the Sam Kelly Caves. The creek was very full, and we were able to catch some frogs and even a crayfish. We climbed Pike's Peak and some ducked into the United States to smuggle a rock! It was a looong climb! We also went to see the buffalo and turtle effigies and ceremonial circles.

Thank you Mrs. Kesslering for driving the bus for us. Thank you Garnet and Greg for coming along as chaperones too!

In Health, we have been looking at our eating habits and learning some ways to make better choices. We have learned about Canada's Food Guide and learned how to read Nutrition Facts Tables. Now, we have made a 5-day action plan to try to improve our eating habits.

I need to increase how many fruits and vegetables I eat every day. I am supposed to get 6 servings a day. Well, I don't - not even close. So my action plan was to try to get 3 servings a day. I plan on having one serving at lunch, one at supper, and one more as a snack sometime during the day.

So far, I've been somewhat successful. I had three servings on Monday, but yesterday I only had two. One of the reasons is because I got home very late and didn't really have a supper. I've got some other obstacles ahead of me for the rest of the week because I am not going to be home very much and I will be having a few meals in restaurants. Unfortunately, the food I like to order doesn't usually include fruits or vegetables. Wish me luck!

We participated in World Math Day. We had 60 seconds to play each game. There were 20 games at each level, which means 100 games altogether. We didn't finish at school, so if you have time at home, log in and finish up.

If you notice on the screen, there are other students from all around the world playing against us. We had many different flags today, ranging from the U.S., Mexico, to the United Arab Emigrates. And, sometimes, we even managed to end up playing against someone in our own class!

It was the 100th Day of School for 2010-2011! We celebrated by doing a few activities. We had our traditional 100 second snack break throughout the day. Miss Gauley dug out some of the old 100 piece puzzles from when we were in Grades 1 and 2 and we raced to complete them. We had "$100" to spend on groceries, so we went through some flyers to add up what we would like to buy. Some of us got very close to $100 in the time given! We also played a dice game, where you try to write the numbers to 100 before someone steals the pencil away. Have a good rest of the school year everyone!

We sold it in the high school break , at recess, and at noon hour. Altogether we raised $156.52. We have decided to get a goat, 2 hens, a rooster, and antibiotics for 10 children.

We would like to thank Mrs. Fieger for organizing this day for us. We liked the freezies, hot dogs, and milk too! Welcome back to school! We have 4 new students in our class and are now up to 19 kids in our 5/6 split class. It is nice to have some new people to get to know, but I am excited to teach this class because they were my Grade 1/2 class when I first moved to Bengough! We just listened to the riddles that the Grade 5's did waaayyy back in Grade 2. They giggled at how they spoke so differently "when they were little".

We have so many new things to learn this year. Keep checking back to see what we are up to!

Bengough and surrounding areas lost power during the afternoon of January 23. During that week, we had such nice weather and there was frost on everything. It made all the trees look beautiful, but the power lines were getting very heavy. Unfortuately, the sun didn't melt all the frost away before the winds came. Many lines and poles snapped under the weight, and our area went black. To make things more scary, we also lost phone and cell service.

Our phones were back by Monday afternoon, and most of us had power late Monday night. Thankfully, we all made it through, without any emergencies. Please check out our blog articles to find out what we all did when the power was out.

Some of the places we had to go to were the museum, the Coal Mine park, the campground, the swimming pool park, the rodeo grounds, the Car Wash, and the Last Chance Shoppe. We went shopping at the Last Chance Shoppe too and found many things to buy. The Brown team came in first and got to pick the coldest juice boxes!!

We also found different ways to make 100. We played a lotto game, worked on some puzzles, and played with cards with $100 on them. We also had snacks of 100 things that we got to eat during our "100 second snack breaks".

Then, we finally got to open our gifts and play with our new toys.

We would like to wish everyone a "Merry Christmas"! We hope you have a safe and relaxing holiday! See you in 2009!

We went on our class trip today to the museum in Ogema. We got to see inside an old country school, an old church, a doctor and dentist office, a house, a store, a cafe, a blacksmith's shop, a telephone exchange, a beauty parlour and barber shop, and a cookshack. We got to climb and play on some old tractors and cars. We saw a movie about Ogema and went for a ride to the park with the train station. We were given a ride sitting in some bathtubs. And we got to see how rope was made!

We would really like to thank the volunteers of the Museum board for all their hard work at the Museum and for their time showing us around. We really liked touching all the items and learning about everything. We would also like to thank Darryl Kesslering for driving the bus for us.

The Deep South Pioneer Museum Day will be July 13. As well, it is open on Sundays during the summer. If you are interested, please check out their website at

On our 100th Day of School we played some games.

We had to bring 100 snacks for 100 second snack breaks. We brought 100 pennies to school to sort by the year. We made some 100 piece puzzles. We got a 100th day sticker to take home, to wear, or to do anything with. We played some 100 games in the gym. We read a story about a wolf and 100 chickens. Then we had to find all the 100 chickens that were hidden in the room.

We sorted 50 Alphabets, made a 50 fruit loop necklace, and finished 50 piece puzzles. We had to find 50 hearts hidden in the classroom and put them in order. We even made 50 tracks in deep snow! Dear Grade One and Two,

We have found out about all five senses now. I would like to know which activity you liked the best. Was it ...

1. when we played some tricks on our eyes?

2. when we tried to guess what was making some sounds and when we watched the salt bounce up and down when we played the guitar?

3. when we tried to guess how many points of the fork were touching us?

4. when we tasted some secret foods?

5. when we tried to guess some secret smells?

In your blog today, tell me about your favourite activity and what you have found out about your five senses.

We went on our class trip to Moose Jaw. After a long and bumpy bus ride, we went to the park to have a picnic and to feed the ducks. We saw male mallard ducks getting a bit cranky with each other. We saw a few female mallard ducks. But we were very happy to finally see some ducklings! They were very tiny! We saw two swans, and we wonder if the swan on the nest has some eggs under her?

We had our picture taken in front of Mac the Moose before we went to the Burrowing Owl Centre.

At the Centre, we learned about raptors. Do you remember the 5 things that birds of prey have to help them hunt their food?

The Great Horned Owl really stared at us. We liked how he could almost turn his head all the way around.

We got to pet Trooper, the Centre's burrowing owl who gets to visit schools in the winter. His feathers felt very soft.

Outside, there were burrowing owls in cages. If you look very closely at the pictures, you may see a couple of burrowing owls just peeking out of their burrows. We were excited to see Huckleberry and Sherman outside their burrows (since we've been watching them on the webcam inside their burrow).

To celebrate Mattesyn and Dawson's birthdays in June, we went to Dairy Queen for ice cream cake. We had huge pieces, but some had room for the few extra pieces that were left!

We would like to thank Alex's dad for driving our bus on the bumpy road. We would also like to thank Mrs. Kemp and Kaeden's mom for being our chaperones.

We have been watching our plants grow. Please click on the Primary Plant Project link in the top left hand corner (under our class picture) to see our plants and what we have been learning about them.

We went on a trip to England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland today. After the airplane ride, we had tea and scones, kissed the Blarney Stone, had our picture taken in front of Big Ben, made bobbies and palace guards, had a medieval feast, and tested our strength at the Highland Games. It was so much fun!

We wrote our own blogs today about planting our seeds. We even got to put a picture into our articles. That took a long time, so we had to save our articles to finish later. But, today we learned that you have to have a title for an article to be saved!!! So, stay tuned ... Robyn was able to finish her article and it is posted under her name!

We learned to do the bunny hop. Mrs. Kemp took a video of us as we were hopping about the room. Unfortunately, Miss Gauley can't figure out how to upload the video to our blog. If you have some advice, please let her know by clicking on the comment button below. Thank you!

Today we performed at the Borderland Music Festival. The Kindergarten's performed two poems - Bug by Lois Simmie and Learning by Judith Viorst. The Grade 1 and 2 class performed two poems as well - The Naughty Word by Bill Dodds and Sweet Dreams by Joyce Armour. Both classes performed very well! People liked our voices and the actions we did with the poems. The Kindergartens got first place with a score of 171 and the 1/2's got second place with a score of 171. Thank you for learning your poems so well!

Today Wide Open Theatrical Escapades came to perform their puppet show based on the story The Wizard of Oz. The puppets made us laugh and we liked making the sound effect noises. We were wondering how they were going to make the tornado in the story! It was cool!

If you would like more information about Wide Open and their schedule, please go to their website at www.wideopen.ca.

The Grades 1/2 class and the Grades 3/4 class have been working on improving their problem solving skills in math. Today, they had a problem solving party. They worked on different problems at 5 stations. To end the day, we had ice cream sundaes (but they had to figure out all the possible combinations first!)

Today was Valentine's Day and "Can't Say Day". If someone caught you saying "like" or "love", then you had to give them your paper heart. The winner was the one with the most hearts. We tasted some red food (strawberry was the favourite red flavour). And we finally got to open our valentines!

We have been in school for 100 days. We brought collections of 100 things. We also brought a snack of 100 munchies. We played a fun game of writing the numbers and rolling the dice. We read 100 words. We finished some 100 piece puzzles. And in all the Lotto games we played, only Roberta, Keith, and Dawson could get three out of six numbers to match!

Today was the 50th Day of School for the Kindergarten class! We counted and counted and counted to 50! We had to look for 50 hearts, print the numbers to 50, finish a dot-to-dot to 50, do a 50 piece puzzle, make a necklace with 50 fruit loops, and share 50 snacks. Our favourite activity was looking for the 50 hearts!

Miss Gauley sprinkled some iron filings over some magnets that were covered with a piece of paper. Suddenly, we could see the magnets and the lines that show the magnets' "fields". You can see the two magnets are attracting each other because the lines look like they are holding hands. You can also see the two magnets that are repeling each other because the lines are being pushed away from the magnets.

Can you tell which magnet this is?
