Have Biome, Will Travel

Article posted March 19, 2008 at 02:06 PM GMT • comment • Reads 3881

We have discussed a variety of biomes in class. We have talked about climate, we have looked at features of each. If you had a choice for a trip, which biome would you go to? Remember, you will be in the natural environment, not a human-settled area. Why do you want to go there?

Feeding at different trophic levels

Article posted March 4, 2008 at 03:01 PM GMT • comment • Reads 172

First, read the article under the related links, "Man Moves Down the Food Chain" (clicking on the link will take you to the article.)

Then, on your blog, evaluate the information presented in the article. Do you have enough information to trust that the scientists ran an unbiased study? Do you agree with statements made about human eating habits in the article? What benefits or disadvantages are there for eating at lower trophic levels? In what ways we could reverse the affect we are having, and what we might see happen to our ocean food webs if we were to change our behavior? How would you go about marketing this strategy to the general populace if it turns out to be a good investment in resources? If we were to adopt this 'feeding' habit, what longterm effects might this have on our ever-growing population? Which cultures might it affect? In addition, discuss possible effects this might have on local and global markets.

Biodomes

Article posted February 15, 2008 at 03:10 PM GMT • comment • Reads 192

We have now set up our biodomes in class to monitor some mini-ecosystems during our course. Discuss your design, the interactions you expect to see, any factors you expect to monitor, what changes you want to make over the course of the semester to your current biodome, what questions you would like to find answers to, and what your hypothesis would be for the changes you make. Be sure to give details so it is understood what you are talking about.

Ecology Matters

Article posted February 8, 2008 at 11:49 AM GMT • comment • Reads 182

We have discussed why ecological and environmental issues are important to society and individuals in general. We have also stated that each individual has different reasons for valuing the environment. Discuss how and in what ways the environment is important to you. Why does it matter that we have a natural environment? What do you value from the natural environment? Saying it is not important is not true. Remember to post to your own blog.
