Our class has been learning about how the US is structured while also creating our own classroom government. As part of this discussion, our class discussed the new Student Reflection and Student Prayer Act (otherwise known as the Moment of Silence law) that took effect in Illinois in October. If you are unfamiliar with the law, the Chicago Tribune has a good article
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-legis12_weboct12,1,279509.story

to review. According to the law students are to be given a minimum of 10 seconds a day for quiet reflection and prayer. This article lead to wonderful conversations about lawmaking, vetoes and overrides, and the concept of Separation of Church and State.

I've asked students to "reflect on the time for reflection" in their blogs.

We've had Fowler Dollars taken from our room. It's time to reflect on this even. Tell me what you think about stealing? What is stealing, really? Why do people steal? How does if feel to have something taken. Are their any times when stealing is alright?

Blog Reflection

As one of their last projects, I've asked my 5th graders to reflect on their blogging experiences. The students are aware that this project is unique in District 54 and that blogging, as a classroom activity is under evaluation. While we brainstormed subtopics as a class, I have not guided their thoughts or ideas. I've asked them to tell me their true feelings about blogging.

Beautiful Words

For the past several weeks in Writer’s Workshop the kids have created and shared their original poetry. The students are so engaged in this writing unit, the energy is infectious. Students submitted their poems to the American Library of Poetry writing contest, Mrs. Buzek, our Library Resource Teacher, has asked that our class compile our poems so they can be published in our library, and several students have been asked to read their poetry to other classes. I’d like all the world to see their wonderful work as well! Take a look and listen to our best work!

The students in Mrs. Heap's class have been looking for a few good books to read during the last few weeks of school and over the summer. I thought a blog post might be a good way for Fowler's Fabulous Fifth to share some of their favorite reads!

My students have been working on Individual Research Topics (IRT). They read books, encyclopedias and Internet articles on their topics and took notes. They then used their notes to write a report. This project really shows their skills as writers. We’re working hard on leads, conclusions and transitions between paragraphs. Enjoy their work!

Our First Blog ... A Reflection About Writing

Article posted March 2, 2007 at 04:45 AM GMT0 • comment (3) • Reads 247

As we begin to blog together, it seems only appropriate that we begin by thinking about what kind of writers we are, and where we hope to go. Your first assignment is to write about yourself as a writer. What do you think you are doing particularly well? What areas are you working hard to improve? How have your skills changed so far this year?
