Here is a writing sample of where we stand now. Our main focus this week has been adding sensory details to help our readers paint a picture of what we are talking about. Students have learned how to blog their Personal Response Writings today. They started by posting their first writing sample that they they did at the beginning of the year, and then their most recent writing sample. After various mini-lessons on sentence fragments, run-on sentences, interjection hooks (i.e. Wow! We have to write about more idioms!), and the much needed review of upper-cases to start sentences and punctuation to end them, we hope you see the incremental improvements beginning to take shape.
Personal Response Writing is reactionary responses to 'idioms'. It's risk free writing where students practice expressing feelings, making connections, and incorporating writing traits taught through mini-lessons.

The L.E.R. school community teamed up once again with the ERB First Nation community to provide another great learning adventure for the students. Being one of the first groups to tour the Heritage Garden with its beautiful 8 million dollar lodge, students were taught about various plants and were told traditional native stories. The day concluded with snacks and ice-cold juice!

Recently, I visited with all the classes at our school to share my book titled: "Bully Free Zone". In the story, the main character actively helps a student who is being bullied. However, the characters does so in a manner as not to have the bully come after her. One picture is the cover page of the book, and the other is one of me reading it. I may place the entire book on youtube along with a narration if teachers show interest.

Three of my technology students took a proactive approach to helping others learn ways to deal with bullying. They wrote, filmed, and edited a short video to educate other students on what to do if they are being bullied. Furthermore, they submitted their video to Betty Hoeffner, co-founder & president of HEY U.G.L.Y., INC. This is a non-profit, anti-bullying advocacy group. The submitted video won HEY U.G.L.Y's eight annual video contest. The students will receive cash and clothing prizes but, more importantly, they have learned to take an active role in putting an end to bullying in District 15. The contest was judged by award-winning documentary filmmaker, Rick Erwin.

We are inextricably linking our reading to our social studies to our writing to our technology etc...you get the picture; My class loves practicing reading comprehension strategies while listening to Greek myths during our read alouds. We wanted to learn even more about Greece after reading the myth of Artemis. We now have a whole class of students to write to, video conference with, and share ideas with from Greece. And, purely coincidental of course (wink), the Greek students' teacher's name happens to be Artemis:)

To help make geography more authentic, my students have been following the adventures of Alex Bowling. Mr. Bowling is touring Canada and the United Stated by bike. He has a fantastic blogging site where he graciously updates a list of places he has visited, and my students post questions and keep track of his journey on their electronic maps. Alex emails my students answers to their questions, and students email him follow up questions too. Authentic writing and geography in one lesson.
